Three Bearcats earn All-America honors

Junior offensive lineman Rod Williams highlighted three Northwest Missouri State players that earned All-America honors released Wednesday afternoon by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America.

Williams earned First-Team All-America accolades, while he was joined on the Second-Team by senior offensive lineman Cody Johnson, and linebacker Chad Kilgore. Williams and Johnson helped a Bearcat offense that led the nation in scoring with 48 points per game and was ranked fourth in total offense. Northwest also had two running backs rush for a combined 2,204 yards.

Kilgore led the Bearcats in tackles for a third straight season, finishing with 123 stops — 11 for loss. The 230-pound weak-side backer makes his first appearance on the AFCA squad after earning second-team honors by another publication as a junior.

The Orrick, Mo., native spearheaded a Northwest defense that returned just two starters and played a key role in propelling the Bearcats to the quarterfinals for the eighth straight season.

Kilgore’s 392 career tackles are the fourth-most in program history.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have agreed to terms with free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal on a two-year deal for 2012 and 2013.  Furcal was acquired by the Cardinals on July 31 in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers and helped key the Cardinals 2011 World Championship run.

“Rafael proved to be a great addition for us last season,” said Cardinals’ Senior Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak.  “His leadership and experience was very evident during the pennant race and into the postseason,”

After joining the Cardinals at the trade deadline last season, Furcal turned an N.L.-high 36 double plays among shortstops and he was ranked 2nd in both total chances (238) and assists (155).  He batted .255 with 7 HR’s and 16 RBI for the Cardinals, hitting safely in 38 of his 50 games.

Northwest’s Kilgore earns All-America honors

Northwest Missouri State senior linebacker, Chad Kilgore was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America Team announced on Tuesday.

Kilgore led the Bearcats in tackles for the second straight season with 123 which was third best in the MIAA. The Orrick, Mo., native also led Northwest with 11.5 tackles for loss and finished with five games of 11 or more tackles. He finished with 2.5 sacks and one interception on the season as well.

The senior helped lead Northwest to the playoffs all four season and the eighth consecutive overall. The Bearcats finished the season 11-3 falling in the National Quarterfinals to Pittsburg State, who will play in the National Championship game this Saturday. Kilgore and the Bearcats claimed the 2009 national title as a sophomore starter on the Northwest defense.

With Kilgore’s honor, Northwest has the longest current streak with a player selected to the AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team at 16 straight seasons, from 1996 to present. The Bearcats have been represented 17 times by 13 different players, fourth most in NCAA Division II.

The AFCA’s Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s nine districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.

Jayhawks name Grunhard offensive line coach

Kansas head football coach Charlie Weis announced here Tuesday the addition of Tim Grunhard to the Jayhawk coaching staff. Grunhard will join the KU program as the offensive line coach, effective Jan. 1.

Grunhard will join the KU staff after serving as the head coach of Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan. He led the Stags to five-straight district titles and the 2009 Class 4A state title in his six seasons at the helm of the program. Prior to coaching at Miege, Grunhard enjoyed an 11-year NFL career, all of which were as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a second-round draft pick in 1990 and was the anchor of the Chiefs offensive line throughout his career, earning a spot in the 1999 Pro Bowl. Grunhard started 164 games for Kansas City, which still ranks third in franchise history.

A native of Chicago, Grunhard is a 1990 graduate of Notre Dame where he was a standout offensive lineman and was a member of the 1988 Irish National Championship team.

Kansas’ Robinson earns national honor

Kansas forward Thomas Robinson has been named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for games ending the week of Sunday, Dec. 11. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and will be handed out each Tuesday through Feb. 21 this season.

As the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, Robinson was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. Robinson is the first recipient of the national accolade for the 2011-12 season.

Robinson, a 6-10 junior from Washington, D.C., averaged 23.5 points and nine rebounds for the week and scored 21 points, including 10 of his team’s last 12, as the Jayhawks defeated then-No. 2 Ohio State, 78-67, on Saturday. He had 26 points and 11 rebounds in an earlier 88-80 win over Long Beach State. For the week, Robinson made 17-of-23 field-goal attempts (74 percent) and was 13-18 from the free-throw line.

This is the third season that the USBWA has selected a national player of the week. The weekly Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week is added to the Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list, which will be released at mid-season.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation’s oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA. The winner of the 2012 Oscar Robertson Trophy will be announced and presented by its namesake, Oscar Robertson, at the USBWA’s annual awards breakfast on Fri., March 30 in New Orleans, site of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Final Four.
