Northwest’s Steinmeyer adds guard for 2012-2013

Northwest Missouri State head coach Gene Steinmeyer has announced the early signing of Tember Schechinger to a national letter of intent for the 2012-13 season.

“Tember is a guard who can wear a lot of hats,” said Steinmeyer. “She is an excellent shooter and her aggressiveness on both ends of the court is what caught my eye.”

Schechinger signs with the Bearcats after being recruited by all levels including interest from several Division I schools. She helped led IKM-Manning High, (Manilla, Iowa) to a 19-5 record last year as a junior averaging 13.5 points per game and shooting 52 percent from the field earning First Team All-State honors from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. She was named All-District and First Team All-Western Valley Conference for the Iowa state tournament qualifier.

She also recorded 94 assists and 87 steals during her junior campaign and added 33 blocks from her guard position. Schechinger played AAU for the Iowa Attack and earned 2011 “Best Basketball Players of AAU” recognition over the previous two summers.

Nebraska’s David named Lott Trophy semifinalist

Nebraska senior linebacker Lavonte David was one of eight players named a semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy on Wednesday. The Lott Trophy is presented annually to college football’s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year.

David was one of five linebackers on the list and one of two players from the Big Ten Conference, along with Ohio State defensive lineman John Simon. The Huskers boast a semifinalist for the award for the second time in three seasons, as Ndamukong Suh was a finalist in 2009.

A Miami native, David leads Nebraska with 88 tackles this season, after setting a school record with 152 tackles in 2010. David has also paced the Huskers this fall with seven tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He ranks in the top 25 nationally with an average of 9.78 tackles per game, including four games with at least 10 tackles this season. He has twice been named the Lott Trophy IMPACT Player of the Week this season, earning the honor against both Ohio State and Michigan State.

In his career, David’s 240 tackles are the most among two-year players in school history. He enters Saturday’s game at Penn State in 13th place on Nebraska’s career tackle chart, needing only nine tackles to move into the top 10. David’s career numbers also stack up well against his current peers, as his career average of 10.4 tackles per game ranks fourth nationally among all active players.

Savannah pulls away to defeat Kearney; East Buchanan advances

The Savannah football team pulled away late Tuesday night against Kearney to win their Class 4 second round playoff game at Excelsior Springs High School, 37-16.

With the win, the Savages improve to 11-1 and will travel to Harrisonville for the Class 4 Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Savannah began the game Tuesday down 7-6 with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter as it was postponed from Monday night after two lightning delays.

It didn’t take long for the Savages to take the lead for good.

Savannah forced a turnover on downs and cashed in with a one-yard touchdown run from Blake McFadden.

After another Kearney punt, the Savages then pulled off a miracle as McFadden went back in punt formation and was about to get his punt blocked, but he pulled it down the threw to Tyler Wilt for a 76-yard TD that made the score 21-7.

Kearney made it 21-10 at halftime and then turned Savannah over on downs before driving 54-yards and pulling to within 21-16 after a Colby Davis one-yard run.

That was the score after three quarters and then it was all Savannah.

The Savages went up 24-16 early in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Andy Myers and then McFadden found Wilt again from 23-yards away to go up 30-16.

Kearney turned the ball over on downs again and Myers put the game away with a 42-yard TD run with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

McFadden finished the game 11-for24 for 241 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for 47 more.  Myers had 68 yards on the ground, while Blake Deal had four catches for 117 yards and Wilt added three receptions for 103.

The Savages had 386 yards of offense, and held Kearney to 274 and just just 79 in the second half.

Savannah will kickoff at Harrisonville at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Also Tuesday, East Buchanan advanced to the Class 1 Quarterfinals with an impressive 34-14 victory over West Platte at Missouri Western’s Spratt Stadium.

The Bulldogs improve to 11-1 and they play defending state champion Wellington-Napoleon Saturday at 1:30 p.m. int the Quarterfinals.

Western dominated set one taking a commanding 18-11 lead after an attack error by the Lions. Western took set one 25-19 with Boender collecting six kills. Western got down in set two 15-11 after a Hannah Zimmerman attack error. It looked like the Lions were going to take set two leading 24-21 but five straight points by Western gave the Griffons the 26-24 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Lions used a 7-0 run midway through set three helping them to a 25-21 victory, but Western responded in set four with 19 kills hitting .405 taking the set 25-20 and the season series from the Lions.

Tahler Johnston, Alex Behnke and Zimmerman finished with 12, 11 and 10 kills respectively in their final home match of their careers. Stephanie Hattey had 47 set assists and 13 digs while Sarah Faubel chipped in 16 of the Griffons 69 digs.

Jayhawks cruise past Fort Hays in exhibition game

Celebrating Dr. James Naismith’s 150th birthday and junior Thomas Robinson’s return to the lineup, No. 13 Kansas broke out early and sailed to a 101-52 victory against Fort Hays State in the Jayhawks’ final exhibition contest, Tuesday evening.

The Jayhawks put on a show for the sold-out Allen Fieldhouse crowd, who used Tuesday night’s game to honor Naismith, the game’s inventor, by claiming their 39th-straight exhibition victory, dating back to the 1995 season. In his ninth season of exhibition play at Kansas, head coach Bill Self is now a perfect 25-0. For the 24th time in program history, the eighth time under Self, Kansas broke the 100-point barrier in exhibition play.

Returning from an injury that sidelined him from last week’s exhibition game against Pittsburg State, Robinson was welcomed by a huge ovation when the starting lineups were introduced. The Preseason All-American showed his appreciation with a double-double, pouring in a team-best 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Redshirt senior guard Conner Teahan picked up where he left off a week ago, after connecting for five three-pointers against PSU, he hit his first two attempts from beyond the arc. In fact, Teahan didn’t miss a shot all night. The redshirt senior went 5-for-5 from the floor and hit both shots from the free-throw line for a 14-point performance.

Off the heels of a Teahan three, Kansas sprinted out to a 16-6 lead using an 86-percent accuracy mark from the floor prior to the first media timeout. On a night where five Jayhawks hit double digits, that shooting mark would only slightly cool as KU finished the evening shooting 60 percent while holding the Tigers to 33 percent.

The defending MIAA Tournament Champions, Fort Hays State, was led by redshirt junior guard Lance Russell, who scored 11 points for the Tigers. Junior forward Marcus Yarbrough and senior forward KC Rodenburg each chipped in 10 points. Kansas snapped up most the opportunities on the boards, out-rebounding the Tigers, 37-27.

A cutting move to the basket resulted in junior Kevin Young’s first basket of the game, contributing to the Jayhawks’ 46 points in paint, a lopsided number alongside FHSU’s 16.

The points off turnovers mark also ended Jayhawk-friendly as freshman guard Naadir Tharpe got the Jayhawks’ transition offense rolling with a steal he took down the floor for a fast break layup at the 9:23 mark. Redshirt junior guard Travis Releford and Teahan would connect on a nearly identical play less than a minute later to push Kansas ahead, 36-14. Kansas would finish the night with 32 points off turnovers, compared to the Tigers’ 10.

Releford drained a three to propel Kansas halfway to the century mark with less than two minutes to play as Kansas took a comfortable 54-24 lead into the break.

Five minutes into the second frame, Rodenburg hit the Tigers’ first three of the night before Robinson answered with another of his signature dunks, kicking off eight of his second-half points.

Robinson had company in the final 20 minutes when Tharpe, too, caught fire for 15 second-half points. In his second-straight start, the freshman put up 19 points to finish behind Robinson as the team’s leading scorer, while dishing out seven assists. Midway through the second half, he converted a three-point play and followed that with the more traditional three. Robinson helped him continue to pile on, throwing down a dunk that would put the Jayhawks ahead by 40, 81-41.

Although Self worked every available member of his bench into the final exhibition, the gas pedal was never lifted. Kansas outscored the visiting Tigers, 20-11, in the final eight minutes to cruise to the 101-52 victory.

MWSU’s Zuerlein earns MIAA honor

For the second time this season senior place kicker Greg Zuerlein has been named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week. The senior from Lincoln, Neb. propelled the Griffons to a 31-28 victory over the 3rd ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats connecting all three of his field goal attempts with two being over 50 yards. Zuerlein also earned this award on October 3 for his performance against Missouri Southern.

MIAA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greg Zuerlein, K, Missouri Western

Zuerlein nailed all three of his field goal attempts, which included two over 50 yards. The senior from Lincoln, Neb., also had five touchbacks in seven kickoff attempts and went 2-for-2 in PAT attempts. Zuerlein nailed a 37-yard field goal in the first quarter against the wind, and then hit a 53-yarder late in the first half, cutting the Griffon deficit to one at the break. With 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter and the score tied at 28, he nailed a 58-yard field goal, which proved to be the game-winner. Zuerlein’s 58-yard field goal is a new school record, which was 57 yards, which he set earlier this season against Missouri Southern. Zuerlein has made 16 consecutive field goals, which is an MIAA record and he has made 18 field goals, a new single-season record by a Griffon kicker. During his current 16 straight field goals, 13 of them have been from 30+ yards. Zuerlein is a perfect 4-for-4 from 30-39 yards, 3-for-3 between 40-49 yards, and 6-for-6 from 50+ yards. He scored 14 of the Griffons’ 31 points in the game.

The 25th ranked Griffons will play their final regular season contest of the season on Saturday, November 12 in Hays, Kan. against the Fort Hays State Tigers. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm from Lewis Field Stadium.
