Seven Northwest soccer players honored by the MIAA

Senior Tammie Eiberger led a group of seven Northwest Missouri State soccer players earning all-MIAA accolades as voted on by league coaches and announced by the league office Wednesday.

Eiberger was the only Bearcat to earn first team honors as she is second statistically in the MIAA for points (30) and goals (11) only behind Central Missouri’s Alyssa Rhodes who was named Player of the Year.

The Bearcats had two second team selections, with forward Victoria Von Mende and midfielder Fiona Moloney. Von Mende is third in goals (10) and fourth in points (22) in the MIAA while Moloney has added a pair of goals and four points as well.

Northwest also had four players named to the honorable mention squad: Kelsey Adams, Jordan Albright, Jacque Dedovesh and Emilee Davison. Dedovesh is the lone senior of the group as the other three players are all sophomores.

Northwest kicks off the 2011 MIAA Soccer Tournament on Thursday facing Emporia State at the Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Game time is set for 6 p.m. as the winner faces league champion Central Missouri on Friday.

Kansas women win exhibition game against Emporia State

Led by Angel Goodrich’s 16-points, the Jayhawks kicked off their 2011-12 season with a 83-61 exhibition win over Emporia State, Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. The junior guard added four assists and two steals to go along with her game-high point total.

The Jayhawks got out to an early lead over the Hornets as Goodrich scored eight of KU’s first nine points. Kansas would then extend its lead, going on a 16-2 run during a five-minute stretch midway through the first half, which was capped off by a Cece Harper lay-up to put KU up 33-13, just under eight minutes to play in the half.

In the starting lineup for Bonnie Henrickson’s squad was freshman Natalie Knight, who finished the contest with five assists, two rebounds and a steal in her 23 minutes of play. Freshmen Bunny Williams, Donielle Breaux, Asia Boyd and Chelsea Gardner also saw their first minutes in a Crimson and Blue uniform Wednesday night. Going into the half, KU maintained a commanding 43-24 lead, while holding ESU shooters to just 30 percent from the field.

Kansas added to its 19-point halftime lead in the second as four Jayhawks reached double-digits. Junior Carolyn Davis was the second-highest scorer for KU, with her 6-for-7 performance from the field en route to 14 points on the evening. Henrickson’s five freshmen combined for a total of 22 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals in their first game. The highest scorer of the group was Williams who had eight. Breaux was not far off her teammate’s pace with seven.

Kansas held Emporia State to a little less than 40 percent from the field on Wednesday night and capitalized on 27 Hornet turnovers, scoring exactly 27 points, while only committing eight themselves.

This was the second-straight season that Kansas scored 83 points in an exhibition opener, as last year’s team defeated Fort Hays State, 83-62.

With their first game under their belt, the Jayhawks will now shift their attention to the Pittsburg State Gorillas, whom they will host Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse. Tip-off for KU’s final exhibition game of the pre-season is slated for 2 p.m.

Griffon volleyball loses in five sets at Northwest

For the second time in three matches the Griffons came out on the short end of a five set thrilling match. This time Western fell to their rival Northwest Missouri State by a score of 3-2 (26-24, 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 and 15-13). This is also the second time in three matches that they lost a 2-1 lead in a match. The Griffons fall to 12-14 overall and 5-8 in MIAA action.

The first set was a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than four points. The Griffons lead at 21-20 but the Bearcats came back winning six of the final nine points for the 26-24 victory. Western closed set two on an 8-4 run with kills by Amanda Boender and Tahler Johnston. Western evened the match at one set apiece after the 25-21 set two victory.

Western went on a 14-4 run in set three with runs of 5-0 and 4-0 sparking them to the 25-19 victory and the 2-1 lead in the match. Western looked like they were going to claim the match taking a 19-14 lead after five straight points in set four, but the Bearcats closed the set winning 12 of the final 18 points taking the 26-24 victory forcing set five. The Bearcats took control of set five midway through going on a 4-0 run taking a 10-6 lead. Western cut the lead to one at 14-13 after a Boender kill but an attack error by Johnston gave the Bearcats the 15-13 victory.

The Griffons hit .218 with 63 kills in the set. Four different Griffons had double digit kills with Alex Behnke leading the way with 15. Stephanie Hattey finished with 53 of the Griffons 63 set assists while Tory Lyman finished with 16 digs.

The Bearcats improve to 11-15 overall and 5-8 in MIAA action. The Bearcats hit .246 with 22 of the 67 kills coming from Alex Hanna. Laira Akin had 56 set assists while Abby Graves led the charge defensively with 18 digs.

Western returns to action on Friday, November 4 when they take on the 7th ranked Jennies of Central Missouri in the MWSU Fieldhouse. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.

KU pulls away from Pitt State in second half of exhibition opener

Five three-pointers from senior Conner Teahan and a triple-double from junior Jeff Withey ignited No. 13 Kansas to a win against Pittsburgh State in the 2011-2012 season exhibition opener, Tuesday night, 84-55.

A sold-out Allen Fieldhouse crowd played witness to the Jayhawks’ 38th-straight exhibition game victory, dating back to the 1995 season. Head coach Bill Self moved to 24-0 in exhibition games at Kansas as the Jayhawks kept their unblemished 9-0 record versus Pittsburg State.

Kansas, who shot for nearly 50 percent in the opening half while holding the visiting PSU to just 29 percent accuracy, fought off a closely contested first half instead before outscoring the Gorillas 52-28 in the final 20 minutes. As a team, Kansas also outdid its first-half effort, shooting for a 65-percent mark in the second frame. Defensively, Withey helped the Jayhawks to a lopsided blocking margin as KU rejected 15 shots to Pitt State’s single block.

Without the use of starters Tyshawn Taylor, Elijah Johnson and Thomas Robinson, Kansas head coach Bill Self worked all of his available roster into the Tuesday night’s contest. Teahan’s 21 points led all scorers, while Withey’s 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks turned in the only triple-double of the evening – and of his career – had the game been a regular season contest.

Junior guard Travis Releford and freshman guard Naadir Tharpe churned out 14 and 12 points, respectively, to put four Jayhawks in double figures. All of the above would also have registered as career highs if Tuesday night’s matchup not been exhibition.

Teahan nailed a three just seconds after the Jayhawks won the opening tip, setting the tone for what looked to be an offensive outpouring from the Kansas lineup. The redshirt senior knocked down his first three shots from three-point land and finished the evening 5-of-8 from behind the three-point arc and an efficient 8-for-11 from the floor.

Powered by four returning starters from its 2010-11 squad, Pitt State was led by senior guard Drake Green and junior Nolen Marky’s nine points apiece and junior forward JaVon McGee’s 12 rebounds.

Just under the 15-minute mark, sophomore forward Justin Wesley was whistled for his second foul. The call sent Wesley to the bench for the majority of the opening half, but it was Pitt State that suffered from foul trouble. The Gorillas sent KU into the bonus with 12 minutes to play, a benefit the Jayhawks were not able to capitalize on, hitting just 3-of-8 from the line in the first frame and 19-for-37 on the night.

A three from junior Courtney Ingram and put-back layup off the hands of McGee shortened the Kansas lead, 19-15, bringing the Gorillas as close as they had been all evening to the Jayhawks. Another bucket from Ingram would cut the Kansas lead to two, seconds before the final media timeout. Tharpe responded with a pair of threes out of the timeout to help push the Jayhawks out to a 32-27 lead at the break.

Releford converted a three-point play to spark the Jayhawks in the early minutes of the second half. The starting point guard added to his eight first-half points with six more in the second, on a 55-percent shooting night.

A quick strike to the basket resulted in a Tharpe layup, backing up Teahan’s fourth three-pointer of the game. The back-to-back effort handed Kansas the 46-35 advantage at the 13:35 mark – the Jayhawks’ first double-digit lead since jumping out to a 15-5 advantage in the game’s early minutes.

With a sizable lead in tow, Kansas took off. Consecutive dunks from Releford and Wesley brought the full house to its feet and stretched the lead, 62-46.

The Jayhawks would increase its lead to 15, then 20 and finally 25 for the remainder of the game. When Teahan connected for his fifth three ball of the night, Kansas was well-beyond reach nearing the final media timeout on its way to the comfortable 84-55 victory.

Chiefs down San Diego for fourth straight win

Up and down the sideline, the Kansas City Chiefs were telling each other the game wasn’t over. Didn’t matter that Philip Rivers was under center with less than a minute left, and that Nick Novak was poised to kick the winning field goal for San Diego.

The Chiefs have had their backs against the wall enough this season.

They certainly weren’t going to just quit.

With first down at the Kansas City 15, Rivers called for the snap — and the ball never got into his hands. It squirted loose on the field, bounced under a scrum, and finally emerged in the hands of Chiefs linebacker Andy Studebaker, who was running to the sideline in joy.

The game headed for overtime, and Ryan Succop eventually knocked through a 30-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Chargers on Monday night.

“Our guys were saying, ‘It ain’t over ’till it’s over. Keep playing, and digging,’ ” Chiefs coach Todd Haley said. “You never know what will happen.”

Kansas City (4-3) became the first team in NFL history to lose its first three games and share at least part of a division lead after four more. The Chiefs are also the first team since the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2000 to win four straight games after losing their first three.

Rivers could have prevented all of it from happening.

“I haven’t had one in years,” Rivers said of the fumbled snap. “It’s unfortunate. I dropped it. This one is rough. You blow it on a play that never should have happened.”

Kansas City had its own chance to win in regulation, but Matt Cassel overthrew his wide receiver in Chargers territory and Eric Weddle’s second interception sent the game to overtime.

San Diego won the toss but failed to pick up a first down, and Cassel calmly led Kansas City down field. Succop’s field goal with 5:16 remaining gave the Chiefs their fourth straight win and moved them into a tie with San Diego (4-3) and the idle Oakland Raiders (4-3) in the division.

“We were saying, ‘Don’t quit,’ ” Studebaker said. “You never quit, even if it looks ugly. If you quit every time something looks ugly, you miss an opportunity to do something special.”

Boy, was this one ever ugly.

Rivers wound up throwing for 369 yards, but he also had two interceptions and one big fumble.

The teams combined for eight turnovers, matching the most in an NFL game this season. The Chargers were called for 12 penalties worth 105 yards in a gruesome game on Halloween night.

One that looked pretty in the end to Kansas City.

The Chiefs got off to an abysmal start this season, losing their first two games by a combined 89-10 score and then dropping their third game on the road, at San Diego. Along the way, the Chiefs lost Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles, safety Eric Berry and tight end Tony Moeaki for the season.

They started moving in the right direction against division doormats Minnesota and Indianapolis, and then romped to a 28-0 win over Oakland last week.

Now, they are tied for the lead in the AFC West.

“It’s everybody,” Haley said. “And I hate to mention one without mentioning them all, because everybody fought their tail ends off to make that result what it was.”

The Chiefs had things going early, getting a 36-yard field goal from Succop in the first quarter and then capitalizing on Rivers’ second interception in the first few minutes.

With the ball at the Chargers 39, Cassel dropped back to pass and saw Jonathan Baldwin streaking for the end zone. The wide receiver out-jumped fellow rookie Marcus Gilchrist for his first career touchdown catch, giving the Chiefs a 10-0 lead.

Novak kicked a field goal midway through the second quarter for San Diego, but he missed another late in the second quarter, and Succop hit one with just a few ticks on the clock for a 13-3 halftime lead.

The Chargers’ defense kept them in the game in the third quarter, holding the Chiefs to two three-and-outs and picking off Cassel for the second time. Kansas City only managed 44 yards of offense in the second and third quarters combined.

Novak kicked three field goals in the third quarter, drawing the Chargers within 13-12, but their inability to get into the end zone cost them dearly.

Kansas City finally got its offense in gear, marching 74 yards in 10 plays early in the fourth quarter. Jackie Battle finished off the drive by leaping over the scrum from a yard out, giving the Chiefs a 20-12 lead with 12:01 left.

It sure didn’t last long.

Rivers completed four straight passes covering 74 yards — one for 27 yards to Vincent Jackson on third-and-13 — before Curtis Brinkley leaped in from 2 yards out for the Chargers’ first touchdown.

Going for the 2-point conversion and the tie, Rivers floated a pass to Brinkley in the flat and he was thrown back by cornerback Brandon Carr. The officials ruled that Brinkley nudged the ball over the goal line, though, and the decision was upheld by video review.

It was the fourth replay call that went against the Chiefs.

Rivers’ butterfingers made that a moot point.

“They had no timeouts. We were in position to go kick the game-winning field goal,” Chargers coach Norv Turner said. “It didn’t happen. It looked to me like Philip got a little anxious and came out early. That’s a very unusual way to not win a game.”

Missouri Western’s Hill, Bass honored by MIAA

Missouri Western football players Michael Hill and David Bass receive weekly MIAA honors for their performances in last week’s 31-24 victory over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. Hill a redshirt junior running back received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career while Bass a redshirt junior defensive end received MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

MIAA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Michael Hill, RB, Missouri Western

Hill had another outstanding game for the Griffons accumulating 297 all-purpose yards, which includes a career best 246 on a career high 41 carries. Hill’s 41 carries breaks the Griffons single-game record which was 40 by three different players. The last to do it was Derrick Pitts vs. Central Missouri in 2003.  Hill was just 37 yards shy of tying the career-high for yards in a game, which is 283 by Tony Williams vs. Missouri-Rolla in 1996. The Griffons improved to 5-0 when rushing for over 200 yards in a game finishing with 356 against the Bearcats. Western also finished with over 500 yards of total offense for the second consecutive week. The junior from St. Joseph, Mo., gave the Griffons a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter catching a 13-yard pass from Travis Partridge. He led the Griffons with four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. Hill is just 23 yards shy of 1,000 yards on the season. He is averaging 5.2 yards per carry.

MIAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

David Bass, DE, Missouri Western

Bass continues to dominate opposing offensive lines as he tied the single game Missouri Western record for sacks in a game for the second time this season with four against the Bearcats. The junior from St. Louis, Mo., had six tackles with five being for a loss of 19 yards. Bass is just one tackle for a loss for tying the single season record. He has 17.5 with two games to play. Eric McDowell has the record with 18.5 in 2003. He also has 13 sacks on the season which is two behind McDowell’s 15 which he set in 2003 as well. Bass is also three sacks from breaking the career record for sacks. Bass has 27.5 while the leader Kinney Redding has 30.5, which was set from 1974-77. Bass helped the Griffons hold a team under 100 yards rushing for the third time this season, allowing the Bearcats just 44.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, November 5 when they host 3rd ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. The game will be the MIAA game of the week with kick off set for 2:00 pm. Western will also honor 12 seniors before the game who include: Adam Clausen, Jack Long, Isaac Collins, Greg Zuerlein, Jake Buckwalter, Nic Burrell, Tom Madget, Cody Kremer, Oliver Pryor, Jesse Engelken, Kip Peters and David Fowler.
