Kansas City wins series opener at Toronto

Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler homered, Bruce Chen won four consecutive starts for the first time in his career and the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 on Tuesday night.

Jeff Francoeur matched his career high with four hits as the Royals, who had lost six of seven away from home, opened a 10-game, 10-day road trip on a winning note.

Chen (9-5) improved to 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA in five August starts. The left-hander allowed three runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked one and tied a career best nine strikeouts.

Chen was perfect through three innings before Yunel Escobar singled to open the fourth, snapping an 0-for-17 slump.

Greg Holland replaced Chen after Mike McCoy drew a two-out walk in the eighth. McCoy stole second but Holland got Escobar to ground out.

Joakim Soria gave up an RBI single to Adam Lind in the ninth but finished for his 23rd save in 30 opportunities.

Kansas City came in having lost seven of nine overall and 21 of its previous 28 in Toronto but jumped on Blue Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow with a three-run, four-hit second.

Hosmer led off with a homer to center, his 11th and first since July 27 at Boston. Francoeur doubled and Johnny Giavotella followed with an RBI single to center, advancing to second on Colby Rasmus’ fielding error. Salvador Perez capped the rally with an RBI single.

The Royals chased Morrow in the fifth, scoring three more runs. Butler hit a one-out homer to left, his 16th. Hosmer singled, stole second and scored on Giavotella’s double. Perez ended Morrow’s night with an RBI triple to right.

Morrow (9-8) lost for the third time in four starts, allowing six runs and a season-high 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Escobar had the only big hit of the night against Chen, a three-run homer to center in the sixth, his 11th. Chen responded by setting down the next seven batters in order.

Blue Jays right-hander Joel Carreno made his major league debut in the sixth and worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Cardinals get blasted Tuesday by Los Angeles

Up eight runs after three innings, Clayton Kershaw went right after the hitters.

The 23-year-old lefty won his National League-leading 16th game and Rod Barajas homered twice in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 13-2 victory over the fast-fading St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

“You definitely don’t pitch around anybody. You just attack,” Kershaw said. “You definitely don’t ever want to nibble with that kind of lead.”

Kyle Lohse (11-8) was rocked for a season-worst eight runs in three innings, an impossible deficit against Kershaw, who struck out eight in six scoreless innings. The Cardinals have lost six of eight and dropped a season-high 10 games behind the NL Central-leading Brewers with 33 games to go.

Manager Tony La Russa wasn’t interested in taking the long view.

“Today was terrible,” La Russa said. “Find Kyle and ask him because it was mystifying. They had a lot of good looks.”

Matt Kemp hit a three-run homer in the first and Barajas had a solo homer in the third and three-run shot in the fifth for his 11th multihomer game, also giving him four in five games. The Dodgers hit a season-high four homers while winning consecutive games in St. Louis for the first time since July 9-10, 2003, and will go for a three-game sweep on Wednesday behind Hiroki Kuroda.

Kershaw (16-5) is 8-1 with a 1.21 ERA in his last nine starts and hiked his NL-leading strikeout total to 207. The Cardinals threatened twice, but Kershaw struck out Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman with two on to end the first and struck out the side in the fourth to negate a double, infield hit and walk.

“You pick the right day to pitch sometimes,” Kershaw said. “The run support, that’s awesome. You don’t want to take those nights for granted.”

Kemp also doubled and scored in the second and needs one homer to become the second player in franchise history with 30 homers and 30 steals. Barajas is batting .381 (16-for-42) in August with five homers, three doubles and 16 RBIs in 13 games.

Yadier Molina and Rafael grounded into double plays to give the Cardinals 139 on the year, by far the most in the majors. Second baseman Skip Schumaker pitched the ninth and surrendered a solo homer to Aaron Miles, who had been the last Cardinals position player to pitch, twice last season.

“I kind of felt like that was my job over there for a while,” Miles joked. “I’ve played catch with Shoe probably about a thousand times so I know exactly what it looks like coming out of hand.

“He’s throwing 92 (mph), he provided all the power.”

Schumaker pitched in relief at UC-Santa Barbara and probably has the best outfield arm on the Cardinals.

“To give up home a homer to Miles, of all guys, is disappointing,” Schumaker said.

Lohse had been 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA against NL West opponents before coming up empty, with half of the Dodgers’ eight hits for extra bases. The right-hander had won his previous three decisions.

“One of those nights they just hit everything I threw,” Lohse said. “A lot balls that came back over the plate. I wasn’t hitting my spots well.”

La Russa passed on a chance to cut into Kershaw’s cushion when he allowed reliever Mitchell Boggs to bat with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth, electing to save his bullpen. Boggs struck out on three pitches.

“You just do the math in the innings that we’ve got to play,” La Russa said.

KU’s Gill announces roster changes

Kansas football head coach Turner Gill addressed two personnel changes regarding the Jayhawk football roster here Tuesday afternoon.

Gill first announced that freshman quarterback Brock Berglund will no longer be taking part in practice during the fall semester, but will remain a member of the Kansas football team.

“Due to legal issues, Brock will no longer be attending practices with the team this fall,” said Gill. “He will remain enrolled as a KU student, and plans to resume all team activities in the spring semester.”

Additionally, Gill announced that due to a violation of team policies, sophomore running back Deshaun Sands has been removed from the team effective immediately.

Sands played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2010, gaining 211 yards on 55 carries, with one touchdown. He picked up Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year honors in 2009, while sitting out the season as a redshirt.

The Jayhawks will open the season Saturday, Sept. 3, when they play host to McNeese State. KU-MSU will kick-off at 6 p.m.

Cardinals blow ninth inning lead and lose to Dodgers

Aaron Miles’ RBI triple keyed a two-run, ninth inning rally and the Los Angeles Dodgers came from behind to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Monday night.

Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter, who has never lost to Los Angeles, dominated the Dodgers for eight innings, shutting them out on five hits. Carpenter took a 1-0 lead into the ninth, but then hit Juan Rivera to start the frame.

Manager Tony La Russa brought in Arthur Rhodes, who struck out Andre Ethier. La Russa then went back to his bullpen, but that move backfired when Miles tripled to right center off Fernando Salas (5-5) to tie the game at 1-1.

La Russa then went to Jason Motte, who got Rod Barajas to ground sharply to short. But shortstop Rafael Furcal bobbled the ball briefly allowing Miles to score the go-ahead run.

The blown save was the fifth in 27 tries for Salas.

Matt Guerrier (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win. Javy Guerra pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 12 opportunities.

James Loney went 3-for-4 for the Dodgers. Matt Kemp was 0-for-4 and had his 11-game hitting streak snapped.

Los Angeles rookie starter Nate Eovaldi allowed just a solo home run to Lance Berkman, his 29th, leading off the second inning. Eovaldi lasted five innings and allowed five hits while walking one and striking out two.

Legends of the Phog at KU set for September 24

A who’s who of Kansas men’s basketball coaches and players will convene at historic Allen Fieldhouse for the Legends of the Phog exhibition game Saturday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m.

Former KU coaches Larry Brown and Ted Owens will coach a collection of former KU players who have been part of three NCAA titles, 54 conference championships, 13 Final Fours and 2,038 all-time victories. The rosters will include many current NBA Jayhawks, including NBA All-Star Paul Pierce, as well as many other recent KU standouts.

“It’s going to be a spectacular event,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. ”Not very often can you spin a negative into a positive but we get an opportunity to do so with the NBA lockout. There have been numerous times we’d like to get all these guys back at the same time, but it’s always been hard for the current NBA players to come back because their schedules run similar to ours. On September 24th we are going to have a KU alumni game, which is basically a legends game, in which many of our most recent KU greats are going to come back, allowing them a chance to run out of the tunnel one more time and play a game, hopefully in front of a packed house.

“We have many committed,” Self continued, “the majority being recent guys who have played (under Self) and several of Roy’s (Williams) players will be here as well, including NBA All-Star Paul Pierce, who is coming back for the first time in a long time. We’ve asked Coach Brown and Coach Owens to be the honorary coaches. Much of the proceeds will go to the memory of (former KU assistant basketball coach) Neil Dougherty, who lost his life tragically this summer due to a heart attack. We’re working with Neil’s family to find a cause that will definitely give Neil a lasting legacy in an area of his life that was very dear to him.”

Additionally, Self said Kansas Athletics will donate a portion of the proceeds to one of Dougherty’s favorite local charities – the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence.

“It will be great coming back to Lawrence and catching up with some old friends and meeting the current players,” Pierce said. “No place compares to Allen Fieldhouse and the rich tradition that is Kansas basketball. When you are a Jayhawk, you’re a Jayhawk for life.”

“The University of Kansas has meant so much to me,” Brown said. “I have a lot of fond memories of my time in Lawrence and coming back for this event will be great. I look forward to visiting with current staff, the old coaches and players and friends.”

Tickets for the Legends of the Phog will be $20 for adults and $10 for students and youth. Williams Education Fund members and current KU students will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets. Tickets ordered via the KU Tickets Office online (www.kuathletics.com) or by calling 800-34-HAWKS. Parking for the event is free.

Beginning with the inaugural live event on August 30, the Cats’ volleyball home opener against Creighton, Wildcat greats from their respective sports will join host Brian Smoller for K-State Gameday, which will air prior to each home football and selected volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball games as well as other selected events. The pregame show featuring Smoller and Wegner-Bush for the August 30 volleyball match, which also features $1 GA tickets for all fans, will begin at 6:15 p.m., while the football pregame show featuring Simoneau will begin at 5:15 p.m. on September 3. Following all pregame shows, the audio for the HD broadcast will transition to the appropriate radio call for play-by-play action, which will be displayed over the HD video stream. For games that are not shown on K-StateHD.TV, the pregame show will direct viewers to the free online audio call of the respective game following K-State Gameday.

A member of K-State’s Ring of Honor, Simoneau was one of the best linebackers ever to play at Kansas State. A letterman for the Cats rom 1996-99, he currently ranks No. 3 all-time in tackles (400) and in tackles for losses. He played in four bowl games for K-State and led the team in tackles both as a junior and senior. In 1999, Simoneau was named first-team All-American, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and was the runner-up for the Butkus Award, while he was also named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 1996. Simoneau went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL with Atlanta, Philadelphia and New Orleans and had 370 tackles.

Wegner-Bush is the career kills leader in Kansas State volleyball history. The outside hitter tallied 1,907 kills during her career while being named to the Volleyball Magazine All-America Team twice. In 2000, she posted 571 kills which still ranks second for a single season, while she also holds the No. 3 mark on the list with 526 kills in 1999. During her career, K-State went 82-38 and reached at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament each year. She was a three-time All-Big 12 Conference selection making the first team her junior and senior years.

A two-time All-American, Wilson is one of the most decorated baseball players in K-State history. A four-year letterwinner from 1989-92, Wilson earned first team All-America honors in 1992, which followed a third team designation in 1991. He was also named the Big Eight Player of the Year in 1992, and he was the school’s only conference player of the year for nearly two decades. Wilson still holds the Kansas State career records for games played (250), game started (236) and singles (188), while he is tied for first in extra-base hits (94) and second in hits (282), doubles (58), triples (15) and runs scored (181). A member of K-State’s All-Century Team, Wilson played on the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team and spent three seasons in the MLB with the Chicago White Sox from 1998-2000.

Zanotti was a four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats from 2005-09, helping the Wildcats to 90 victories. During her playing career under Coach Patterson, Zanotti played in 130 career games to rank third in school history for games played. She averaged 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest while helping K-State to two NCAA Tournament appearances and two Postseason WNIT appearances, including the 2006 Postseason WNIT title and the 2008 Big 12 regular season crown.
A four-year starter for the Wildcats, Stewart was known for his steady play at the point guard spot from 2004-08.  He was part of a senior class that helped K-State back into the national spotlight, earning the school its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in more than 20 years in 2008.  He still ranks among the top-10 in four career categories, including third in assists (395), fourth in minutes played (3,295), fifth in games played (121) and sixth in games started (95).

A walk-on turned scholarship student-athlete, Merriewether left Kansas State as one of the program’s all-time winningest players.  He helped the Wildcats to 95 wins between 2006-07 and 2009-10, helping the program to four consecutive postseason appearances, including a memorable run to the Elite Eight in 2010.  A fan favorite with his gritty play, Merriewether saw action in 101 games in his career with six starts.  He was also outstanding off-the-court, becoming the first Wildcat basketball player to be named President of K-State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

K-StateHD.TV will represent the first exclusive HD broadcast of Wildcat sporting events such as all K-State volleyball and K-State baseball home matches/games and also provide HD coverage of selected Olympic sports or available football and men’s/women’s basketball games.
