Missouri State picked ninth in preseason MVFC poll

Not even Missouri State’s wins over three Top 25 opponents and a pair of Division I playoff teams a year ago were enough to impress its peers around the Missouri Valley Football Conference with the release of the league’s 2011 preseason poll and all-conference team on Monday (Aug. 1).

Coming off a third-place tie at 4-4 in the MVFC standings in 2010, the Bears were picked ninth in this year’s conference preseason poll as selected by league coaches, media and sports information directors. It marks the first time since 1987 that MSU has been picked last in the league preseason poll.

“It’s more important where you are at the end of the season than at the beginning,” said MSU head coach Terry Allen who is beginning his sixth season with the Bears. “We have a lot of new faces, so I understand why they put us where they did.”

The Bears return five starters on offense and four on defense, but will have 34 lettermen and 56 squad members back when camp opens Aug. 4.

Including eight seasons at Northern Iowa, this is also the first time in 13 MVFC seasons that Allen has been picked last in the conference preseason poll. In those 13 years, his squads have never finished worse than predicted, with six finishes higher than projected and seven as projected, including six years when UNI was picked to win the conference and did so.

Northern Iowa recieved 29 of the 36 first-place votes and 316 total points to hold down the top spot in this year’s poll. The Panthers were followed by North Dakota State with six first-place votes and 275 points and Southern Illinois with the remaining top vote and 207 total points. South Dakota State (172), Illinois State (169), Indiana State (168), Western Illinois (151) and Youngstown State (88) were ranked fourth through eighth, respectively, while the Bears tallied 74 total points — by far the most ever by a team picked last in the MVFC preseason poll, which dates to 1986.

The only MSU player to earn Preseason All-MVFC first-team distinction is wide receiver Jermaine Saffold (Sr., Grandview, Mo.) who was an All-MVFC second-team selection last year after he caught 53 passes for 869 yards and five touchdowns.  Three other Bears earned Preseason All-MVFC honorable mention status, including All-America candidate Chris Douglas (Sr., RB, Lawrenceville, Ga.), punter Jordan Chiles (Sr., Hillsboro, Ill.) and cornerback Jimmie Strong (Sr., Texarkana, Texas).

In 2010, Douglas became just the 10th MSU back to accumulate 1,000 rushing yards in a single season when he tallied 1,051 yards on 152 carries, scored 11 touchdowns and finished second in the nation in yards per carry (6.9). He achieved all that while getting just one start and sharing the workload with classmate Stephen Johnston who had 147 carries, 752 yards and 10 starts.

Chiles averaged 38.3 yards per punt as a junior. Half of his 56 punts were fair caught or downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line, and he is poised for his fourth season as a starter on the Bears’ special teams.

Strong led the Bears with four interceptions in 2010 and did so in just nine games as he spent a great deal of his junior year fighting the injury bug. He tallied 31 total tackles and defended six passes.

Consensus Draft Services picked Douglas as a preseason All-America running back earlier this summer. Meanwhile, Saffold, Douglas, Strong and Chiles garnered preseason honors by being named to the College Football Performance Awards Watch Lists for their respective positions. Likewise, Phil Steele’s College Football Preview named Saffold and Chiles as preseason All-MVFC first-team picks, while the publication had Douglas, Strong and linebacker Nick Canavan (So., Norman, Okla.) on the preseason second team.

Season tickets for MSU’s four-game home slate are available by calling (417) 836-7678. The Bears went undefeated at Plaster Field in 2010 and own a six-game home winning streak headed into the 2011 season.

The Bears will kick off the 2011 season at Arkansas on Sept. 3 (6:00 p.m.) and will play their first four contests on the road, including their MVFC opener at Southern Illinois on Sept. 24.

Mustangs win opener at the NBC World Series

The St. Joseph Mustangs opened up play at the NBC World Series at Wichita Sunday night and beat the Plaza Tire Capahas out of Cape Girardeau, 7-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team struck first with two runs in the second, added one more in the third and then broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Jordan Guida had a big night as he finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.  Bishop LeBlond graduate Andrew Nellestein added two hits and he drove in two runs, while Mark Robinette had two hits.

Northwest Missouri State graduate Jayson Huett earned the win as he went eight innings and allowed just three runs on six hits.  He struck out seven and walked three.  After Ryan Price allowed two base runners in the ninth with no outs, Doug Shields got the final three outs for his 12th save of the season.

St. Joseph improves to 41-10 this summer and they’ll play in the second round of the NBC World Series Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. against the Valley Center (KS) Diamond Dawgs.

Royals win final game at Cleveland

Not even word that pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez had passed his physical could put a smile on Manny Acta’s face Sunday afternoon.

Cleveland’s manager had just watched his team lose 5-3 to Kansas City, which completed a 2-6 homestand and dropped the Indians 2½ games behind Detroit in the AL Central.

“To lose three series in a row in front of our own fans is very disappointing,” Acta said.

The fact Saturday’s blockbuster trade with Colorado was official, giving the Indians an ace pitcher at the top of their rotation, was the only good news Acta got all week.

Cleveland’s two wins on the homestand came on ninth-inning rallies. Rookie Jason Kipnis’ first major league hit drove in the winning run for a victory over Los Angeles on Monday and Matt LaPorta’s three-run homer capped a comeback in Saturday’s victory over Kansas City.

Other than that, the homestand was entirely forgettable. The Indians were no-hit by the Angels’ Ervin Santana and committed five errors on Wednesday. Cleveland suffered a 12-0 loss against the Royals on Friday.

The Indians were outscored 33-15, which doesn’t bode well considering they open a seven-game trip to Boston and Texas that begins Monday night in Fenway Park.

“We didn’t swing the bats very well this homestand,” designated hitter Travis Hafner said. “We’re going to have to score more runs on this trip because we’re playing good offensive teams. We have to start playing better to help out confidence.”

Acta realizes the upcoming trip could be the defining moment of the season.

“We’ve got to go on the road and battle now,” he said. “We’re going to play two very good teams.”

Cleveland’s latest loss came at the hands of an emergency starter. Danny Duffy, starting for the injured Kyle Davies, pitched into the sixth inning and Jeff Francoeur and Alex Gordon homered for Kansas City, sending the Indians to their eighth loss in 10 games.

The last-place Royals have won eight of 12.

Fausto Carmona (5-11) allowed four runs in 7 1/3 innings. The right-hander has one win since June 15 and Acta was less than enthusiastic about the outing.

“He’s throwing well,” Acta said. “That’s all I’m going to say. I’ve seen him and a couple of our guys put together six or seven good ones and go back. I don’t want to swallow my words. Hopefully, he gives us a chance to win every five days.”

Duffy (3-4) allowed two runs in five innings, giving up eight hits and striking out six. He also picked two runners off first.

Davies was scratched about an hour before game time because of the sore right shoulder that’s bothered him for most of the season.

Joakim Soria, who failed to hold a ninth-inning lead in Saturday’s 5-2 loss, recorded his 20th save in 26 chances. Asdrubal Cabrera drew a one-out walk, but Carlos Santana hit into a game-ending double play.

Jimenez’s physical took place Sunday at the team’s spring training facility in Goodyear, Ariz. The Rockies will receive four minor leaguers — pitchers Alex White and Joe Gardner, first baseman Matt McBride and a player to be named, who is expected to be pitcher Drew Pomeranz.

Acta said Jimenez will join the team in Boston. His first start will come against the Rangers.

Kipnis hit his first career home run for the Indians in the fifth. Cabrera doubled and scored on Santana’s RBI triple.

Hafner had an RBI groundout in the eighth as a pinch-hitter.

Kansas City signs restricted free agent DE Wallace Gilberry

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Sunday that DE Wallace Gilberry has signed his free agent tender.

Gilberry (6-2, 268) has played in 37 regular season games (two starts) in three seasons with Kansas City (2008-10). He has produced 43 tackles (34 solo), 11.5 sacks (-82.5 yards), 20 QB pressures, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. He originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the N.Y. Giants in 2008.

Gilberry tallied 188 tackles (99 solo), 22.0 sacks (-135.0 yards) and 38 QB pressures in 50 games (38 starts) at Alabama.

St. Louis falls to Chicago in series finale

Jake Westbrook was perfect for 16 straight outs, and then he fell apart. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa blamed the umpire.

Starlin Castro and Marlon Byrd had key hits as the Chicago Cubs broke up Westbrook’s perfect game with a four-run sixth inning and beat the new-look Cardinals 6-3 Sunday night to avoid a three-game sweep.

“I felt strong and was making pitches, I just wasn’t able to make any after that,” Westbrook said. “It hurt us, hurt us big-time.”

Apparently, La Russa was peeved about a 2-2 pitch to Carlos Pena that was called a ball en route to a bases-loaded walk that put the Cubs up 2-0. Westbrook thought it was a strike.

“It was one of those situations where if you don’t shut your mouth you get in trouble,” La Russa said. “But we didn’t deserve the runs we gave up, including some of his.

“And I’m not going any farther with that one, so no use to try to dig for it.”

Lance Berkman’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth made it interesting for the Cardinals, who completed a disappointing 4-3 homestand against the two worst teams in the NL Central. They trail the first-place Brewers by 2 1/2 games heading into a three-game series in Milwaukee on Monday.

“Two out of three from the Cubs is nothing to sneeze at,” Berkman said. “I think if you want to poo-poo the homestand, one of those games against the Astros we should have won, and it would have been three out of four.”

Alfonso Soriano homered for the second straight game and Ryan Dempster (8-8) pitched six-plus innings for the Cubs, who snapped a five-game losing streak and beat the Cardinals for the second time in seven meetings this season.

“We’ll enjoy it for what it was,” Dempster said. “The bullpen did all the work, man. They made some big pitches in some big situations. It was fun to see them do it.”

Soriano homered off Kyle McClellan, moved to the bullpen after the Cardinals acquired Edwin Jackson last week.

Newly acquired Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal got a standing ovation before grounding into a forceout as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, a move that prompted the Cubs to lift Dempster. Ryan Theriot, who lost his starting job because of the trade, had been 6 for 7 in the series before Sean Marshall induced an inning-ending double play with runners on first and third.

Westbrook (9-5) needed only 44 pitches to get through five innings, then labored through 33 pitches in the sixth and left trailing by four. After he retired his first 16 batters, five straight Cubs reached safely with two outs, and Westbrook was done after Chicago batted around.

Westbrook had been 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his first three starts after the All-Star break.

“When Westbrook keeps the ball down like that, he’s tough,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “You really just hope he starts getting the ball up.”

Castro’s RBI double over center fielder Jon Jay’s head put the Cubs ahead. Pena drew a bases-loaded walk before Byrd finished the rally with a two-run single. Soriano, who hit a three-run homer in the first on Saturday, added a two-run drive for his 17th.

After managing just two hits off Dempster over the first five innings, the Cardinals climbed right back into it in the sixth on Berkman’s league-leading 28th homer to straightaway center.

Carlos Marmol worked the ninth for his 20th save in 27 chances.

Eighth-place hitter Koyie Hill walked on a full count with one out in the sixth for the Cubs’ first baserunner. Dempster’s two-strike sacrifice bunt gave them their first runner in scoring position and Reed Johnson’s sharp single to right with two outs ended the no-hit bid and put runners at the corners.

Daniel Descalso started at shortstop instead of Furcal, fatigued after a day of travel, plus just 6 for 38 for his career against Dempster, and made two exceptional plays early.

Descalso robbed Johnson to start the fourth on a grounder that deflected off third baseman David Freese’s glove, then snared Soriano’s grounder up the middle and made a strong throw to first from the grass to end the fifth.

Cardinals trade for SS Raphael Furcal

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have acquired shortstop Rafael Furcal from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league outfielder Alex Castellanos who was playing at Springfield (AA).

“We feel that Furcal will give us added veteran experience when it comes to a pennant race,” said Cardinals’ Senior Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak.  “Rafael has been an excellent top of the order hitter and he brings plenty of athleticism and defense.”

Furcal, 33, is veteran of 11-plus seasons with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers.  He was named to the National League All-Star team last season when he batted .300 for the 3rd time in five seasons with the Dodgers.   The Dominican native was also named an N.L. All-Star in 2003 as a member of the Braves.

The switch-hitting Furcal owns a career batting mark of .283 with 101 home runs and 298 stolen bases.  He was batting .197 in 37 games this season, but was hitting .364 over the past week with three multi-hit games.  He’d missed 63 games this season with a strained left oblique and a fractured left thumb.

Furcal has been considered to be one of the games’ top leadoff batters since breaking in with Atlanta in 2000 as the National League’s Rookie of the Year.  He has hit 26 career leadoff homers and ranks 2nd among the Dodgers’ all-time leaders in leadoff homers with 14.  Furcal owned the majors’ best on-base pct. (.370) among leadoff hitters last season.

Furcal has been to the postseason eight times in his career (five times with the Braves and three times with the Dodgers).  He batted ,500 (6-for-12) for the Dodgers during their 2009 Division Series sweep of the Cardinals.

The deal was the second in less than a year’s time between the two National League clubs, with the Cardinals having acquired infielder Ryan Theriot from the Dodgers last November.

Furcal will wear uniform #15 and Jon Jay will switch to uniform #19.
