Missouri athletics reviewing possible academic violations

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri says it is reviewing allegations of possible academic rules violations made by a former tutor in the athletic department.

The university released a statement Tuesday saying the violations were brought by a tutor who worked in the Athletics Academic Services. Missouri says it has also notified the NCAA, which is working with the school on the investigation.

The release did not reveal what the allegations are or which teams might be involved.

Director of athletics Jim Sterk says the university’s “mission is to uphold the highest standard of academic performance and ensure the proper conduct with all of our programs.”

No. 5 KU handles Georgia to win CBE Hall of Fame Classic

riggertKUKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Frank Mason III had 19 points, Josh Jackson added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and fifth-ranked Kansas turned to its zone defense to beat Georgia 65-54 on Tuesday night in the CBE Classic championship game.

Devonte Graham added 14 points for the Jayhawks (4-1), who won their third consecutive in-season tournament title and second CBE Classic. They also won the tournament in 2012.

The Jayhawks hope it’s the beginning of a sweet ride at the Sprint Center this season. They play Davidson in the same building in a couple of weeks, have the Big 12 Tournament there in March, and then hope to land in the NCAA Tournament regional finals with a Final Four spot on the line.

Yante Maten had 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (3-2), but they were done in by 3-for-18 shooting from the perimeter, equally lousy foul shooting and turnovers that led to easy runouts.

J.J. Frazier, who had been averaging 19 points per game, was held to two on 1-for-10 shooting.

The game was strange from the outset as two coaches who disdain zones, the Jayhawks’ Bill Self and the Bulldogs’ Mark Fox, slapped them on when foul trouble robbed them of several starters.

It also slowed the game down and turned it into a shooting contest.

Kansas was a bit more efficient from the perimeter, slowly drawing away after trailing 20-19 with about 8 minutes to go, to forge a 35-25 lead at the break. The Bulldogs only made one of their final 16 field goal attempts, and their only scoring in the final 5 minutes came at the foul line.

The lead was still just 42-34 with 16 minutes to go when Mason drove for a basket, the first of eight straight points for the Jayhawks. Mason added another basket, Jackson solved the Bulldogs’ zone for a dunk and Graham and Dwight Coleby finished it off to give Kansas a comfortable cushion.

Georgia went more than 7 minutes without scoring as the game got away.

BIG PICTURE

Georgia earned a split in the CBE Classic, and losing to Kansas doesn’t hurt its NCAA Tournament resume. The Bulldogs showed in their win over George Washington that they can be competitive.

Kansas has already proven it can score this season. On Tuesday night, the Jayhawks proved they can play a little defense, too, even if it meant ditching Self’s preferred man-to-man.

Georgia begins a five-game homestand against Gardner-Webb on Friday night.

Balanced scoring lead Kansas State past Robert Morris

riggertKansasStateMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The first few games of Dean Wade’s sophomore season showed that he may have fallen into the “sophomore slump” but on Tuesday night, there were new signs of a slump.

Wade had a season-high 13 points and DJ Johnson and Barry Brown added 12 points each to help Kansas State beat Robert Morris 61-40 in a regional round matchup of the Barclays Center Classic.

“I felt like I was letting the team down by not playing aggressive,” Wade said. “So tonight I wanted to come out and be as aggressive as I could and still be smart with the ball.”

The Wildcats (4-0) never trailed and shot 47 percent on 23-of-49 shooting. Wade also grabbed nine rebounds and Johnson had eight.

Although Kansas State led the entire game, there were mental lapses for the Wildcats that led to sloppy play after Kansas State jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead.

“During shoot around, I said we can’t leave for New York till tomorrow,” Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber said.

“We have to take care of business today. Today we were very impatient with the ball, you had to keep moving the basketball with guys making different cuts. It’s kind of hard to explain.”

Robert Morris (0-5) shot 23 percent on 13 of 57 shooting and Kansas State was able to separate during the Colonials’ scoring droughts. On top of their shooting woes, Robert Morris also committed 25 turnovers.

The 23 percent shooting was the lowest for a Kansas State opponent since Long Beach State shot 19 percent back in 2013.

Isaiah Still led the Colonials in scoring with 10 points on 3-of-17 shooting and Aaron Tate grabbed 11 rebounds.

BIG PICTURE

Robert Morris: The Colonials’ 25 turnovers were a season high.

Kansas State: The Wildcats were the first team this season to hold Robert Morris under 50 points.

STAT OF THE NIGHT

Despite losing, Robert Morris edged the Wildcats on the boards 40-38.

FRESHMAN STANDOUT

Kansas State freshman Isaiah Maurice came off the bench to grab a season high six rebounds.

QUICK COMPARE

Kansas State’s DJ Johnson overpowered his Robert Morris counterpart Braden Burke. Johnson finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Burke grabbed eight rebounds but could only muster two points on 1-of-9 shooting.

UP NEXT

Robert Morris: Robert Morris will finish out their portion of the Barclays Center Classic with Hampton on Friday and then face the winner of Stony Brook and Towson the following night.

Kansas State: Kansas State will travel to Brooklyn for two games in the Barclays Center Classic. They will take on Boston College on Friday night.

Mizzou women roll to big win over Indiana State

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Freshman Jordan Chavis (Lexington, N.C.) came off the bench to hit five three-pointers and score a career-high 17 points, as Mizzou Women’s Basketball rolled to a 77-48 win over Indiana State on Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena. Chavis tallied 13 of her game-high 17 in the second half to lead four Tigers in double figures, helping Mizzou (3-1) win its 26th consecutive non-conference home game.

Sophomore forward Cierra Porter (Columbia, Mo.) tallied 16 points and four rebounds, sophomore guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) scored 15 points, and freshman forward Hannah Schuchts (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points. Cunningham and Schuchts each pulled down a game-high-tying six rebounds, and Cunningham led all players with four assists.

The Tigers dominated from the outset, scoring the first 14 points of the game. Mizzou held the Sycamores (2-2) scoreless for the first 4:50, and without a field goal until their ninth shot fell with 4:05 left in the quarter. Buoyed by six points each from Sophie Cunningham and freshman guard Amber Smith (Shreveport, La.), the Tigers cruised to a 20-6 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Porter took over offensively in the second quarter, boosting the Mizzou lead to 16 on a 3-point play with 6:15 left in the half. After ISU slowly chipped away, Porter hit back-to-back long-range jumpers – the second a 3-pointer – to extend the lead to 31-16. The Tigers would maintain that 15-point lead at halftime, 34-19. Porter tallied a game-high 12 points in the first half, while Cunningham added five rebounds.

The Sycamores were able to close the lead to as low as eight points with 6:04 left in the third quarter. Mizzou responded with a 13-0 run, and would lead by at least 20 the rest of the way.

The Tigers continued their stellar free-throw shooting as a team, canning 27-of-28 charity tosses (96.4 percent) – a mark that is the third-best single-game free-throw percentage in school history. Mizzou came into the game shooting a SEC-best 78.3 percent from the line.

Mizzou will celebrate the Thanksgiving weekend in the Bahamas by playing in the Junkanoo Jam. The Tigers tip off Friday at 4:15 p.m. CT against Creighton, then cap their trip Saturday afternoon against either Dayton or Georgia Tech.

Griffons stay winless with loss to Lake Superior State

mwsuST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western men’s basketball team dropped to 0-4 on the season after an 81-63 loss to Lake Superior State Monday night in the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Cole Clearman tied a career high with 25 points, leading scorers in the game. The junior added six rebounds and four assists for the Griffons. But, Clearman’s scoring wasn’t enough for his team which shot 36 percent from the field, 27 percent from three-point range and 65 percent at the free throw line.

Missouri Western was competitive on the glass, pulling down 39 rebounds to Lake Superior State’s 40. Cold shooting from long range really hurt the Griffons, making just eight of 30 attempts from behind the arc.

Jason Jones scored 10 points for the Griffons and Joe Hamilton’s seven rebounds paced the team.

The Griffons head across the state later this week for the Marriott St. Louis Airport Classic. Missouri Western plays Maryville University on Friday at 5:15 p.m. and host UMSL on Saturday at 3 p.m.
