Martinez, Cardinals roll to 12-2 win at Atlanta

riggertCardinalsATLANTA (AP) — Pitcher Carlos Martinez drove in two runs, matching the total he allowed in six innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Julio Teheran and the winless Atlanta Braves 12-2 on Saturday night.

At 0-4, Atlanta is the only NL team without a victory this season.

Martinez (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks.

The Cardinals have scored a combined 19 runs while winning the first two games of the weekend series. They were held to only seven runs in three losses at Pittsburgh to open the season.

Kolten Wong had three hits, scored two runs and also reached on one of Atlanta’s two errors. Aledmys Diaz had two hits, including an RBI off John Gant in the eighth.

Teheran (0-1) gave up four earned runs on six hits and four walks in four innings. He also threw two wild pitches.

Martinez drove in a run with a grounder in the second inning and a single in the fifth.

Teheran loaded the bases with three walks in the first. As a bookend to the collection of shaky pitching, Jason Grilli walked three batters in the ninth.

Atlanta’s Nick Markakis had a run-scoring double and scored on Freddie Freeman’s single in the third.

CHILLS, SPILLS

The temperatures fell from 60 degrees for the first pitch into the 40s. The breezy, chilly conditions may have contributed to the combined six errors, 12 walks and four wild pitches. Five Braves pitchers totaled nine walks and three wild pitches.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cardinals: Martinez, 24, threw 99 pitches in his 38th career start. … Rookie CF Jeremy Hazelbaker earned the start and hit second following his pinch-hit HR on Friday night. He went 1 for 4 with a walk, scored a run, drove in one and stole a base.

Braves: CF Ender Inciarte did not play after leaving Friday night’s game with a tight left hamstring. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Inciarte was “a lot better” on Saturday. Inciarte may be held out again Sunday, and the prospect of cold, wet weather in Washington early next week could keep him out of the lineup longer if he still has any discomfort.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright will make his second try for his first win of the season when he starts in Sunday’s final game of the series against the Braves. Wainwright is 8-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 15 career games, including 10 starts, against Atlanta.

Braves: RHP Williams Perez, who was 7-6 with a 4.78 ERA in 2015, will make his first start on Sunday. It will be his first appearance against the Cardinals.

MSHSAASpringfield, Missouri – The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) announced late Friday that Springfield will be the host city for the 2018-2022 Boys & Girls State Basketball Championships and 2016 State Football Championships.

“We’re excited about coming down to Springfield,” said Kerwin Urhahn, MSHSAA Executive Director. “It’s a high-school rich environment and southwest Missouri supports high school sports very well. We’re looking forward to having all of our participants experience that excitement and enthusiasm first hand. We also appreciate all the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis has done for us in football and all that Mizzou has done in basketball over the years. We greatly value those partnerships and their support.”

In a competitive bid process, bids were submitted by the Springfield Sports Commission and the Convention & Visitors Bureau with facilities at Missouri State University (MSU) serving as the venues. Supporting entities include the City of Springfield, Greene County, Springfield Hotel Lodging Association, Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, Elliott Lodging, Hammons Hotels & Resorts, O’Reilly Hospitality Management, Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks, Buffalo Wild Wings with numerous other organizations providing promotional support.

“We’re delighted Springfield was selected,” said Tracy Kimberlin, president/CEO of the Convention & Visitors Bureau, which manages the Springfield Sports Commission. “With the cooperation and partnership of MSU and many other businesses and organizations, we submitted a proposal showing very strong community-wide support for hosting the state championships.”

Craig Long, CFO at MSHSAA, said the organization was impressed by the amount of community support and they’re looking forward to returning to Springfield.

“We’re humbled by the magnitude of community support that was evident in the proposal that came from the Springfield community and we’re excited about the championships being at Missouri State University,” Long said.

The basketball championships will be at JQH Arena and Hammons Student Center and football at Robert W. Plaster Stadium.

“We are very excited after 20-plus years to have the MSHSAA football and basketball championships coming back to Springfield and Missouri State,” said MSU Executive Director of JQH Arena & Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities and Operations Keith Boaz. “We look forward to providing first-rate facilities and making the state championship experience a memorable one for the students and participating schools.”

“Missouri State University is thrilled to be selected as the host site for Missouri’s premier high school state championship events,” said Missouri State Director of Athletics Kyle Moats. “This has certainly a collaborative effort between the City of Springfield, Convention & Visitors Bureau, Springfield Sports Commission and the University, and we are proud these events have finally returned to Springfield and the great facilities on our campus. We look forward to serving as the hosts for high school basketball and football fans across the state.”

During the five years the basketball championships are in Springfield, more than 40,000 people will attend the events each year. Attendance at the football event will be about 25,000 people this fall.

“The Springfield Sports Commission and its board of directors are honored and excited to be the host of the state basketball championships,” said Lance Kettering. “Special recognition goes to the staff at Missouri State University for allowing the opportunity to bid on and ultimately host this event in Springfield. The Sports Commission does not control the athletic venues when we are submitting a bid, it’s paramount for organizations to work together to bring championship-level events to Springfield.”

Columbia hosted State Basketball Championship events for boys from 1973 through 1988 and 1992 to present and for girls from 1980 through 1988 and 1992 to present.

Houck, Missouri blank Auburn 2-0 in game two of series

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou sophomore RHP Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) tossed his second complete-game shutout of the season as Mizzou Baseball defeated Auburn, 2-0, on Friday night at Taylor Stadium.  Houck tallied 10 strikeouts while walking only one batter and allowing only four hits against the SEC’s top hitting offense. Auburn hitters struggled to get solid contact as Houck induced 14 groundouts to go along with his 10 strikeouts. Two of the four hits he allowed were infield knocks. Mizzou’s victory tied the series at one game apiece as Mizzou is now 19-14 on the year and 3-8 in SEC play.

Sophomore 3B Shane Benes (Town & Country, Mo.) went 2-for-4 with a double to continue his hot streak at the plate.  He has reached base in nine consecutive games, hitting two home runs and three doubles in that stretch.  He also had an impressive diving stop at third base, making the throw to keep the runner out of scoring position.

Mizzou’s first run of the game came in the first inning.  OF Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) moved up to second base after leading off the game with a single.  A throwing error on a Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) grounder allowed McGuire to cross the plate to get the lead. The team was then able to tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) scored from third on a passed ball.

But Houck needed just the run in the first inning as Mizzou recorded its fourth shutout of the year and the second with Houck on the hill. Both of his outings were complete-game shutouts.

Mizzou will finish the series on Saturday at 12 p.m.
