Griffons win third straight MIAA series despite dropping finale at NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State (2-18, 2-7) jumped out to an early lead then put the game away with a flurry of offense late to take the third game of its series from Griffon Baseball (9-7, 7-2), 8-3.

With a doubleheader sweep the day before, Missouri Western still took the series two games to one. Missouri Western played all three games as the home team due to the series being originally scheduled as a home series for the Griffons. Bad weather in St. Joseph forced the move to Tahlequah.

NOTABLES

  • Northeastern State scored two runs on Roy Robles in the first then added six over the final three innings
  • The Griffons were limited to just one hit through the first 4 1/3 before Jordan Jackson put MWSU on the board with his second home run of the series
  • Trailing 2-1 after Jackson’s home run, the Griffs had the tying run at third with two out in the fifth when Conrad McMahon was picked off at first on a close play for the third out
  • MWSU scored all three of its runs by way of home run, getting solo bombs from Jackson, Andrew Curry and Dusty Stroup – the last two in the ninth inning
  • After NSU’s six runs in the seventh or later on Friday, MWSU has surrendered 54 percent of its runs this year in the final three innings

Mizzou women advance to first SEC semifinal after OT win against No. 13 Kentucky

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Sophie Cunningham scored 29 points, including seven in overtime, and Missouri advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals for the first time with a 70-68 victory over No. 13-ranked Kentucky on Friday.

Cunningham took a pass from Lauren Aldridge to score the go-ahead basket for a 65-63 lead with 55 seconds left in overtime. Aldridge added two free throws with 19.3 left. Rhyne Howard cut the margin to two with 15.7 to go with two free throws but Cunningham added another pair of her own at 11.5. Tatyana Wyatt cut the lead to one with a 3-point play with 8.3 remaining before Cunningham made 1 of 2 at the line. Howard’s 3-pointer at the buzzer went off the rim.

Howard also missed a short jumper at the end of regulation after Cunningham tied the game at 59 by making 1 of 2 free throws with 21.2 remaining.

Cunningham was 7-of-12 shooting with three 3-pointers and sank 12 of 14 free throws. Amber Smith added 12 points while Aldridge, who had the Tigers’ other four OT points, finished with eight. The Tigers survived 26 turnovers.

Howard scored 25 points but missed all six of her 3-point tries with the fourth-seeded Wildcats (24-7) failing to hit a 3-pointer on all 16 attempts. Taylor Murray added 14 points and Wyatt 11. Maci Morris, the team’s second-leading scorer behind Howard, finished with eight points on 2-of-12 shooting.

Missouri (23-9), which has won four straight, takes on top-seed and No.5-ranked Mississippi State on Saturday.

Northwest Missouri State beats SBU 2-1 to complete three-game sweep

BOLIVAR, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team completed a three-game road series sweep of Southwest Baptist with a 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Max Spitzmiller had a strong showing on the mound for the Bearcats (9-10, 5-4 MIAA), tossing seven innings while giving up one earned run on six hits and striking out seven Southwest Baptist hitters.

For the two squads, scoring runs was very hard to come by. Southwest Baptist finally broke the scoreless tie in the third inning after senior catcher Hunter Hisky hit an opposite field home run down the right field line. This would be Southwest Baptist’s only run scored on the afternoon.

Northwest evened it up in the sixth with a run of its own. Senior outfielder Derek Hussey led off with a single to center field. Hussey advanced to second on a ground out by senior infielder Logan Rycraft. With one out, senior catcher Jay Hrdlicka hit his sixth double of the season to right center, scoring Hussey.

Junior Ethan Griswold and freshman Max Ross both pitched in the eighth for Northwest, neither allowing a hit. Griswold walked two, but Ross got out of the jam with a strikeout.

The Bearcats scored the go-ahead and winning run in the top of the ninth when senior catcher Alixon Herrera crossed home plate on an RBI single by sophomore infielder Matt Gastner.

Senior pitcher Trevor Dudar walked onto the mound in the ninth to complete his fourth save of the 2019 season. Dudar struck out the side to end the ball game.

NOTES: Hrdlicka notched his third three-hit game of the season … Hrdlicka is currently on a five game streak reaching base … Northwest has five players with 20 or more hits this season in Hrklicka (24), Hussey (24), Connor Quick (23), Herrera (22) and Mondesi Gutierrez (20) … Dudar has struck out 15 batters in 10 1/3 innings worked this season.

Missouri Western softball swept by No. 8 Central Oklahoma Friday

EDMOND, Okla. – Griffon Softball (11-10, 1-3) built early leads in both games of a doubleheader at No. 8 Central Oklahoma (20-1, 4-0), but eventually became the latest victim of the Bronchos who stretched their win streak to 16 games.

Missouri Western led 3-0 in game one before falling 7-3 and led 2-1 in a 6-2 game two loss.

Central Oklahoma 7, Missouri Western 3

  • MWSU led 3-0 after back-to-back solo home runs by Gabi Carter and Cassidy Kelsheimer in the third
  • UCO answered with a six-run, three-hit bottom of the third
  • Carter’s home run was her fourth of the weekend
  • The Griffons were only able to take advantage of one of three UCO errors in the game
  • Griffon pitchers walked seven UCO batters and didn’t record a strikeout in the game
  • Kelsheimer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored
  • Taylor Hoelscher was 2-for-3 as well

GAME 2
Central Oklahoma 6, Missouri Western 2

  • Missouri Western led 2-1 after Kelsheimer’s second solo home run of the day in the fourth
  • UCO got a pair of two-out runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead
  • The Bronchos added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth
  • MWSU was held to three hits in the game
  • The Bronchos walked seven times again in game two

Missouri State loses to Bradley in MVC quarterfinals 61-58

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Darrell Brown had 20 points as Bradley edged Missouri State 61-58 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tourney quarterfinals on Friday.

Brown, who converted all 10 of his foul shots, made two free throws with 8.3 seconds left for a four-point edge. Josh Webster scored to cut the lead to two with 2.1 seconds remaining but Elijah Childs added a free throw for Bradley then missed the second and the Bears could only heave the ball the length of the court as time ran out.

Elijah Childs had 12 points and seven rebounds for Bradley (18-14). Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye added 11 points.

Jarred Dixon had 17 points for the Bears (16-16). Josh Webster added 12 points. Ryan Kreklow had 12 points.

Tulio Da Silva, the Bears’ leading scorer heading into the matchup at 15 points per game, shot only 17 percent for the game (1 of 6).

Bearcat softball drops two games at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma – The Northeastern State University Riverhawks completed a two-game series sweep of the Northwest Missouri State University softball team on Friday afternoon.

Northeastern State notched a 6-1 win in the opener. The Riverhawks tallied a 10-1 victory in six innings on the second game of the day.

GAME ONE
The Bearcats tallied six hits in the opening game but could not push across a run against Northeastern State starting pitcher Gail Young. Young struck out five and walked three.

Northwest’s Olivia Daugherty went for 3-for-3 at the plate and Kiana Baderdeen went 2-for-3 to tally five of the Bearcats’s six base hits.

GAME TWO
Northwest scratched four hits and a run in the back half of the doubleheader. However, Northeastern State turned a 2-1 game into a 10-1 victory with an eight-run sixth.

Northeastern took the 1-0 lead in the first. The Bearcats answered in the top of the fourth with an RBI from Karli Allen that plated Sydne Brashear.

Up next for the Bearcats will be a scheduled home series against Southwest Baptist on March 15, Central Missouri on March 16 and Missouri Western on March 19. Stay tuned to Northwest athletics for the latest schedule changes.

MWSU tennis rolls past St. Cloud State down in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – Missouri Western (7-3) continued play in Orlando with another win on Friday, this time coming with less suspense than the team’s 4-3 win on Thursday. The Griffons put together a dominating team performance in a 6-1 win against St. Cloud State (5-8).

All three Griffon doubles teams walked away with wins on Friday. Federica Salmaso and Bojana Vuksan managed to shut out their opponents as the duo improved to 4-0 in doubles play this season. Karolina Ström and Joanna Abreu Roman improved to 9-1 in duals doubles win a 6-3 win.

Abreu Roman kicked off the singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win on the number two courts. She was the only player to shut out her opponent in singles. Ström picked up her ninth win in as many dual matches this season in the number one spot on her way to a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Salmaso, Vuksan, and Ciarra Gilmore all claimed wins in the singles to round out the Griffons’ scoring.

After Friday’s win, Missouri Western has now won six of its last seven matches. The Griffons will face a team that enters with an impressive streak of their own on Sunday when they take on University of Mary. UMary is 9-2 this spring and has won four-straight matches, not allowing more than one point in each of those wins.

Northwest wraps up first day of NCAA Track & Field Championships

PITTSBURG, Kansas – Northwest began competition at the 2019 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships today in Pittsburg, Kansas. Kevin Schultz kicked off the meet for the Bearcats with his events in the heptathlon. He is currently second, with three events remaining tomorrow. He has 3,117 points and trails the leader Valentin Charles (Texas A&M-Kingsville) by 135 points. He ran a 60m of 7.34s, long Jump of 7.09m, shot Put of 11.76m and a high jump of 2.13m.
Omar Austin qualified for the finals of the 400m with the seventh-best prelims time (47.48). Austin placed twelfth in the 200m prelims (21.69). Marcus Klein placed 13th in the long jump of 7.22m and Karim Achengli placed ninth in the 5,000 meters with a run of 14:15.27.

For the women, Jordan Hammond placed fourteenth in the 60m hurdles with a run of 8.94 seconds and Mercedes Isaacson-Cover placed tenth in the long jump with a jump of 5.71m.

Tomorrow Hammond will start her pentathlon at 10 a.m. with the 60m hurdles. Schultz will compete in the conclusion of the heptathlon which begins at 12 p.m. with the 60m hurdles. Issacson-Cover will start the triple jump at 5:55 p.m. and Austin will compete in the 400m finals at 6:10 p.m. The Bearcats will close the meet with the men’s 4x400m relay at 8:00 p.m.

Kansas women beat Oklahoma State 76-66 in first round of Big 12 tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Christalah Lyons scored 21 points, Kylee Kopatich added 20 and No. 10 seed Kansas jumped out early and beat seventh-seeded Oklahoma State 76-66 on Friday night in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.

Lyons and Kopatich each made seven field goals and combined to make five of the Jayhawks’ eight 3-pointers. Aniya Thomas added 12 points and Austin Richardson had 11 for Kansas (13-17), which will play No. 2 seed Iowa State in a Saturday quarterfinal.

Vivian Gray scored 16 of her 25 points in the second half to lead Oklahoma State (14-16). Braxtin Miller chipped in 16 points.

The Jayhawks built a 20-point lead midway through the second quarter before Oklahoma State cut the deficit to 35-28 at halftime. The Cowboys pulled within a point twice early in the fourth quarter but never had the lead.

Griffons’ upset bid comes up short against No. 3 Fort Hays State in MIAA quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – With just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Missouri Western Women’s Basketball (14-16) trailed by just four points to the third-ranked team in the nation. Top-seeded Fort Hays State (28-1) would respond with 10 unanswered points, running away with a 71-58 win to end the Griffons’ season on Thursday night.

NOTABLES

  • Missouri Western began the game like a team that had no nerves about facing the third-ranked team in the nation. The Griffons shot 57 percent in the first quarter to take a 18-17 lead.
  • Both defenses settled in after the first quarter, as the teams combined for just eight field goals in the second.
  • Fort Hays State held a 32-29 advantage at the halftime break. Melia Richardson continued her offensive production from Wednesday, scoring 10 points in the first half.
  • Brittany Atkins’ jumper with seven minutes left in the third dropped the Tigers’ lead to 36-35, their smallest lead of the half.
  • Fort Hays State closed the third quarter on a 13-4 run, making five of its next 10 field goals to take a 10-point lead into the final quarter.
  • The Griffon defense vaulted a 9-3 run to open up the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 52-48 with 4:51 to play. Missouri Western held the Tigers to just one made basket in the first five minutes of the quarter.
  • Fort Hays State found its stride offensively, making six of its final eight field goals to pull away for the 13-point win.
  • The Griffons made the most of their possessions and only turned the ball over nine times on Thursday.

  • Atkins tied her season-high with 24 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
  • Richardson finished with 11 points on 80 percent shooting.
  • Katrina Roenfeldt added nine points and nine boards.
