Missouri reinstates quarterback Maty Mauk

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has reinstated quarterback Maty Mauk from a suspension for violation of team rules, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

It is not known whether Mauk will start in the Tigers’ next game Nov. 5 at home against Mississippi State.

A school official would not confirm the move and said coach Gary Pinkel would address the situation on the SEC coaches’ teleconference Wednesday morning. Pinkel has not commented on Mauk’s status in recent weeks.

After last week’s 10-3 loss at Vanderbilt, Pinkel was asked whether personnel changes were needed on offense and he replied, “We’re looking at everything.”

“It’s really easy to throw people all over the place,” Pinkel added. “It’s my fault, so I’m charged with getting that changed.”

Freshman Drew Lock won his first career start earlier this month against South Carolina, but Missouri (4-4, 1-4 SEC) has been held to a total of 12 points with no touchdowns during a three-game losing skid since then.

Pinkel said Missouri’s difficulties in the run game have made it much tougher on Lock.

“He matures a lot,” Pinkel said. “Any experience he has is new for him.”

Mauk is 17-5 as the starter. He has six touchdown passes and four interceptions in four games while Lock has two touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Mauk and offensive tackle Malik Cuellar were suspended Sept. 29. Cuellar, a backup, was reinstated after one game.

Missouri State picked eighth in MVC preseason men’s basketball poll

riggertMSUST. LOUIS – For the third straight season, Wichita State has been selected as the men’s basketball preseason favorite to win the Missouri Valley Conference, the league announced Tuesday as part of its annual media day festivities here.

The two-time defending MVC champions earned 42 of 43 possible first-place votes and 429 total points in the poll, as determined by league coaches, broadcasters, beat writers and communications personnel. Evansville collected 350 points to earn the No. 2 spot, followed by Northern Iowa with 336, Illinois State with 323 and Loyola with 267. Loyola received the only other first-place vote.

The second five in the poll include Indiana State in the No. 6 spot with 218 points, followed by Drake (165), Missouri State (127), Southern Illinois (101) and Bradley (49).

Paul Lusk’s Bears return five starters from last season, but have a solid crop of five newcomers that the fifth-year head coach says will make the upcoming season a fun one for his staff and for Missouri State fans.

“The league poll doesn’t matter at this point,” Lusk said. “We were picked third last year, and Loyola was picked 10th, so you never know how it’s going to play out. I do know that this (MSU team) is going to be a good group, and they’re going to work very hard.”

In addition to returning senior starters Dorrian Williams, Camyn Boone and Loomis Gerring, the Bears also bring back sophomore Chris Kendrix and junior Austin Ruder. Kendrix and Ruder combined to lead MSU in scoring each of the last five games of the 2014-15 season, in which MSU went 2-2 to close out the regular season.

Missouri State opens the 2015-16 season on Saturday, Nov. 7 against William Jewell in a 2 p.m. exhibition game at JQH Arena. The regular-season opener for the Bears is Nov. 13 at Oral Roberts. Season ticket information is available by calling (417) 836-8899, while single-game tickets are on sale by calling (417) 836-7678 during regular box office hours. Ticket details are also available by visiting MissouriStateBears.com/tickets.

The MVC preseason all-conference team was also announced Tuesday with Wichita State’s Fred VanVleet, the preseason player of the year, joining teammate Ron Baker on the five-person team along with the Evansville tandem of D.J. Balentine and Egidijus Mockevicius and Illinois State senior DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell.

Volquez to start World Series opener for Royals

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals will send Edinson Volquez to the mound in Game 1 of the World Series, choosing their most consistent starter to lead things off against the New York Mets. The more volatile Johnny Cueto will go in Game 2.

Royals manager Ned Yost announced his rotation Monday, the day the Series gets started at Kauffman Stadium. Yordano Ventura will get the ball when the teams head to Citi Field in New York for Game 3 on Friday, with veteran Chris Young offering a change of pace in Game 4.

“We wanted Johnny Cueto in Game 2 because Johnny really feeds off the home crowd, and we’re able to have Johnny in Game 2 and Game 6 here at home,” Yost said. “We think that gives us a bit of advantage having Johnny pitching at home in front of our home crowd.”

The Mets will start Matt Harvey in Game 1, followed by Jacob deGrom. Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz will follow in the first two games at Citi Field.

Volquez was 13-9 with a 3.55 ERA during the season as the replacement for departed veteran James Shields. And while he was just 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA in three playoff starts, he did toss six innings of two-hit ball to beat Toronto in the AL Championship Series opener.

“It’s a great honor to pitch in this game, especially pitching at home,” said Volquez, who had never made it past the divisional round in two previous postseason appearances.

“I don’t have to do anything different than what I’ve been doing,” he said. “I’ve got to stay focused in what you’re doing, especially this game, because this is a World Series game. You don’t have too many chances to make a lot of mistakes in those games.”

Cueto certainly knows the fine line between devastating and disastrous.

Spurred by the crowd at Kauffman Stadium, he allowed two runs on two hits over eight innings against Houston in the decisive Game 5 of their divisional series. But in a hostile environment in Toronto, he was hammered for eight runs in two innings, joining A.J. Burnett as the only pitchers to allow 11 baserunners in a playoff start lasting two or fewer innings.

Cueto said Monday the miserable outing is firmly in the past, and he’s prepared to do exactly what the Royals expected of him when they acquired him at the trade deadline.

“They brought me here for this,” he said. “That’s what they brought me here for, and I have to give it my all to make sure that the team that brought me here finishes off as champions.”

Ventura will start Game 3, in part, because he wouldn’t have been ready to pitch the series opener after starting Game 6 of the championship series. Young earned the final starting spot over Kris Medlen on the strength of his solid performance in Game 4 against the Blue Jays.

The two dovetail nicely, too. Ventura relies on a blistering fastball and hard-breaking curve, while Young provides a completely different look with his array of off-speed stuff.

“If we brought back Ventura in Game 1, he would have been a day early. We didn’t want that,” Yost said. “We really like Chris Young in Game 4. He’s a guy that it doesn’t matter — there is nothing that’s going to distract him. There’s nothing that’s going to slow him down.”

MIAA/AstroTurf Offensive Athlete of the Week
Brady Bolles, QB, Northwest Missouri

Bolles passed for a career-high 329 yards on 28-of-39 passing with three touchdowns to lead the Bearcats to a Homecoming victory over Fort Hays State, 45-24. Bolles completed passes to 10 different receivers on the day. His long pass completion was a 69-yard downfield strike to Shawn Bane Jr. The 6-3 senior quarterback is a native of Lincoln, Neb. where he competed at North Star High School.

MIAA/AstroTurf Defensive Athlete of the Week
Kole Schankie, LB, Emporia State

Schankie had a career-high 14 tackles as Emporia State held Missouri Western scoreless until there were just 28 seconds left in a 17-3 Homecoming victory for the Hornets. It was just the third game this season an MIAA team has been held without a touchdown and the first time the Hornets have held an opponent with out a touchdown since a 13-0 win over Lindenwood at their 2013 Homecoming. His sack on a Griffon third down led to a punt and ESU would eventually score the first points of the game on the ensuing drive. He forced and recovered a fumble at the end of the third quarter and four plays later the Hornets would score their second touchdown to take a 14-0 fourth quarter lead. The 6-1 junior linebacker is a native of Madison, Kan. where he competed at Madison High School.

MIAA/AstroTurf Special Teams Athlete of the Week
Jaylen Zachery, PR, Central Missouri

Jaylen Zachery provided the Mules with a spark on special teams when he returned an NSU punt 79 yards for a score in the second quarter. Big 12 hands out players of the week in football

riggertBig12Samaje Perine (Oklahoma), Shawn Oakman (Baylor) and Michael Dickson (Texas) were named Big 12 Football Players of the Week by a panel of media that covers the Conference. Perine (offense) earned his fourth career honor while Oakman (defense) picked up his second. Dickson (special teams) was recognized for the first time.

Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
Samaje Perine, Oklahoma, RB, So, Pflugerville, Texas

Samaje Perine rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns, both season-highs, in Oklahoma’s 63-27 win over Texas Tech. The 201 rushing yards stand as the third most by a Big 12 player this season and the four rushing TDs are tied for the most. It marked the fourth time in Perine’s young career that he has run for at least 200 yards and scored at least four touchdowns. Against the Red Raiders, he averaged 8.7 yards on his 23 carries and added one reception for nine yards. Perine had seven runs of at least 10 yards and five for at least 15. Included was a 48-yard burst in the third quarter that set up his third touchdown and put OU ahead 42-20.

Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
Shawn Oakman, Baylor, DE, Sr, Lansdowne, Pa.

Shawn Oakman had seven tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss of 16 yards, one sack, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries in Baylor’s 45-27 win over Iowa State. In the third quarter, the senior defensive end sacked ISU QB Sam Richardson for a loss of 12 yards, while poking the ball loose. The sack was his fourth of the season and extended his career school-record to 17. The 3.5 TFL were a career-high and give him 43 for his career which ranks second in program history. Oakman tied career-highs with the seven tackles, six solo stops and forced fumble.

Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
Michael Dickson Texas, P, Fr, Sydney, Australia

Michael Dickson had a potential game-saving play early in the fourth quarter to preserve Texas’ 23-9 win against K-State. Dickson came on to punt with the ball at the K-State 41-yard line and UT holding on to a 16-9 lead before a bad snap sent him retreating back to the UT 32-yard line. The true freshman scooped up the ball with defenders closing in on him and punted it downfield to the K-State 8-yard line. Dickson had two more impressive punts in the decisive fourth quarter with a 45-yarder and 51-yarder. All six of his punts in the game came in the second half. For the season, Dickson has posted 45 punts for an average of 40.0 yards with a long of 59 yards. Eleven of his punts have been 50 yards or longer, and he’s placed 11 of his punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line (with only three touchbacks).

Chiefs defeat Pittsburgh to snap five-game losing streak

riggertChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had been in the same position twice before this season, trying to hold onto a dwindling fourth-quarter lead inside Arrowhead Stadium.

This time, they managed to do it.

Alex Smith calmly led the Chiefs downfield in the closing minutes, hitting Chris Conley with a short touchdown toss, and Kansas City held off the ailing Pittsburgh Steelers 23-13 on Sunday to snap a five-game skid with its first home victory this season.

“Not much different than the other two games, to be honest,” Smith said of the losses to Denver and Chicago.

“A little bit I think we just made plays down the stretch. That was the bottom line. Staying aggressive in all three facets of the game.”

Smith threw for 251 yards, while Charcandrick West added 110 yards rushing and his first career TD as the Chiefs (2-5) finally earned a celebration in their home locker room.

“This is something we’ve been working toward,” said Eric Berry, whose first interception since being diagnosed with cancer in December led to the Chiefs’ first touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs shut down Pittsburgh’s Landry Jones, who made his first NFL start in place of the injured Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Vick. Jones threw for 209 yards and a touchdown, but he was also picked off twice and lost a fumble that helped end the game.

“If I took care of the ball today,” he said, “we would be right there in it.”

Le’Veon Bell ran for 121 yards for the Steelers (4-3), who had won three straight against Kansas City. Antonio Brown had six catches for 124 yards, while Martavis Bryant caught his 11th touchdown pass in 12 career games.

“They made more dynamic plays than we did, particularly over the last 30 minutes of the game,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “They converted necessary third downs on offense and made dynamic, game-changing plays on defense.”

Tomlin said that Roethlisberger, still out with a knee injury, was close to being ready to play, and that the quarterback should be ready to go next week against Cincinnati.

“We decided to go with the guy that had the practice reps. That was the appropriate thing to do. No second-guessing,” Tomlin said. “We’ll move forward with Ben as we prepare this week.”

The first half amounted to a field-goal fest, which wasn’t all that surprising considering the amount of offensive talent that both teams were missing to injury.

Santos hit three of them after Chiefs drives stalled in the red zone, though he did miss a 54-yarder just before the half. Chris Boswell knocked through a 24-yarder for Pittsburgh.

The Chiefs finally established a cushion midway through the third quarter.

It began when Jones threw a pass over the middle that skipped away from Brown and right to Berry, who reacted quickly enough to make the diving interception.

The Chiefs capitalized by driving 47 yards, at one point using a hurry-up offense to keep Pittsburgh off-balance. West finally plunged in from a yard on third-and-goal to end a streak of seven trips to the red zone without a touchdown, and giving Kansas City a 16-3 lead.

“Unreal,” West said. “I feel like I’m still in the end zone.”

Pittsburgh quickly answered behind Jones, whose 41-yard completion to Brown helped set up its lone touchdown. Jones lofted a pass that Bryant hauled in while tip-toeing in the corner of the end zone — replays confirmed he made the reception after initially bobbling it.

The Chiefs were forced to punt, the Steelers added another field goal, and suddenly it looked as if another fourth-quarter lead would evaporate at Arrowhead Stadium.

This time, the struggling Kansas City offense — missing wide receiver Jeremy Maclin to injury and with a revamped offensive line — made every play that mattered.

Smith hit tight end Travis Kelce for a 26-yard reception to convert a third down, and West ripped off a 36-yard run moments later. He added a short run on an option play to convert another third down, and Smith hit Conley from 5 yards with 5:13 left to put the game away.

“We didn’t let off the accelerator for four quarters,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I thought that was important.”

Game notes
Steelers CBs William Gay (shoulder) and Antwon Blake (concussion) left the game. Their status for next week was unknown. … The Chiefs last beat Pittsburgh on Nov. 27, 2011. … Chiefs LB Tamba Hali had his second and third sacks of the season. … The Steelers had been plus-6 in turnover differential, tied for the league lead. They were minus-3 on Sunday.
