Former Ole Miss center Dwight Coleby transferring to Kansas

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. – Center Dwight Coleby will be transferring to Kansas after two seasons at Ole Miss. The 6-9, 240-pound Nassau, Bahamas, native has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to attend KU, will sit out the 2015-16 season and have two years eligibility, Kansas head coach Bill Self announced Monday.

Coleby will report to KU in July, after he competes for the Bahamas in the FIBA Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships, June 15-21, in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

“We’ve been keeping an eye on transfers the entire spring due to the fact we lose so many big guys next year,” Self said of 2015-16 KU senior forwards Perry Ellis, Jamari Traylor and Hunter Mickelson. “It would be nice to have a big guy in your program that knew the system, and we can rely on to be a foundation. When Dwight became available, we researched it and watched tape. He’s a exactly what I think we need. He’s a big guy that can play either bigs position. He’s active. He reminds me of a lot of a bigger Jamari or Thomas Robinson-type body. He’s got a great motor. I feel like he can play on the block. He can play facing. He can do a lot of different things. He’s raw offensively, but he’s a premiere athlete and should be a solid rebounder and defender right off the bat.”

Coleby played in all 34 games for Ole Miss in 2014-15, including three starts, where he averaged 5.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 16.5 minutes for the Rebels who finished 21-13 overall, tied for third in the SEC with an 11-7 record and lost to Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Coleby was second on the Ole Miss team with 29 blocked shots and his 4.8 rebounds per game were third-best on the squad. He shot 53.2 percent from the field, which was second-best on the team. His 79.7 percent accuracy from the free throw line was a 27.1 percent improvement from his freshman year. Coleby posted six games in double-figure scoring and had his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at then-No. 19 Arkansas on Jan. 17.

“Dwight was obviously a contributor and role player for an NCAA Tournament team,” Self said. “He didn’t play a ton last year, but Ole Miss had good players. He’s hasn’t been playing ball forever, but there is definitely a foundation there, physically. Also, foundation from an intellect standpoint that is going to allow him to become a much better player fast. Without question, we think his best ball is well down the road. I see him being a Darnell Jackson. I see him being a bigger Jamari, a guy that can have a big impact on our program and hopefully mature and develop into a starter for us.”

As a freshman in 2013-14, Coleby started four of 28 games for Ole Miss and averaged 2.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 10.4 minutes per game.

Coleby went to Ole Miss after attending Piney Woods High School in Piney Woods, Mississippi. While there he averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots in 2012-13. Prior to Piney Woods, Coleby attended St. George’s High School in Freeport, Bahamas.

Mustangs stay perfect behind Marble’s complete-game shutout at Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs played their first road game of the season Sunday night and St. Joe’s summer college baseball team stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 shutout at Nevada.

The Mustangs improve to 5-0 and they’re 3-0 in the MINK League, while the Griffons fall to 1-2 and 0-2 in league play.

St. Joseph starter Dixon Marble was the story Sunday night as he threw a complete-game shutout and needed only 92 pitches to do so.  He allowed only four hits, while striking out five and not walking a batter.  Marble retired the last 17 batters he faced, had only two three-ball counts and he threw first pitch strikes to 25 of the 30 hitters he faced.

The Mustangs managed only four hits themselves, but they were able to produce single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to build an early lead.

Francisco Alvarez hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in the second inning to get the scoring starter.  Jackson Schnurbusch, who had two hits in the game, had an RBI single in the third and Patrick Dillon scored on a Nevada fielding error in the fourth inning.

The Mustangs are back on the road Monday as they play a doubleheader against the Branson Nationals in Bolivar.  The first pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m.

Missouri State wins 19th straight, advances to NCAA Super Regional

riggertMissouriStateSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Jordan Knutson pitched into the eighth inning, helping Missouri State hold off Iowa 3-2 on Sunday night to advance to the Super Regionals for the first time since reaching the 2003 College World Series.

The Bears (48-10) extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 19 games. Bryan Young got the final five outs, retiring Joel Booker on a flyout to end it with the tying run at second base.

Knutson (6-1) gave up two runs and three total hits in seven innings against Iowa (41-18).

Missouri State, the No. 8 national seed, will play Arkansas in the Super Regionals but might be on the road. The Bears play their home games at Hammons Field, the ballpark of the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, who are home next weekend.

Iowa starter Connor Grant (1-2) got just one out before being relieved by closer Nick Hibbing in the first.

Royals lose 2-1 in 11 innings at Chicago

riggertRoyalsCHICAGO (AP) — David Ross did just fine when he swung away.

After failing to execute a safety-squeeze in the ninth inning, Ross hit an RBI single with one out in the 11th inning Sunday that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the Kansas City Royals 2-1.

“I’m playing the game out in my head. I knew what was coming the first time and I didn’t get the bunt down, but luckily I drove that ball into the gap right there at the end,” Ross said with a smile.

The Cubs and Royals split the abbreviated two-game series. Saturday’s game was rained out and will be made up at Wrigley Field during the last week of the regular season.

Ross delivered the fifth game-ending hit of his career, a bases-loaded single just beyond the reach of shortstop Alcides Escobar, who tried to make a sliding, over-the-shoulder catch.

With runners on second and third, the Royals intentionally walked Starlin Castro to load the bases.

“I knew when they got to second and third, I knew they were going to walk Starlin. I’m batting a buck-60 or something, I would do the same thing.”

Despite the lack of power put on the ball, it was perfectly placed.

“Based on the configuration of the defense, you couldn’t have thrown the ball any better to end the ballgame,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.

The ball was just out of the range of left fielder Alex Gordon.

“The ball was just dying. He (Escobar) looked at me, I know I didn’t call it, so he went after it and that was that,” Gordon said.

Earlier in the inning, Dexter Fowler was thrown out at the plate by Gordon when he tried to score on a single.

It was 47 degrees at gametime with the wind blowing in. The crowd included many Royals fans who made up the announced attendance of 37,766.

“It was a great game. The conditions were tough. You knew offense was going to come at a premium,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Zac Rosscup (2-1) struck out Salvador Perez with runners on first and third with two outs in the 11th.

Ryan Madson (0-1) walked Fowler and Kris Bryant to begin the 11th. Jason Frasor relieved and Anthony Rizzo blooped a single, with a video replay confirming Fowler was out at the plate.

Royals reliever Wade Davis pitched out of a jam in the ninth. Rizzo tripled with one out and Castro was intentionally walked. Ross then bunted back to Davis, who held Rizzo at third base and got the out at first. Davis struck out Jorge Soler to end the inning.

Royals starter Yordano Ventura pitched seven innings, allowing one run and four hits. It was his fourth straight outing that he pitched seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.

“He just had everything going. He had a really good curveball, was throwing strikes with his fastball and mixed in some straight changeups,” Yost said.

Chris Coghlan had three hits off Ventura, including an RBI single in the seventh.

Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada pitched into the sixth. Recently demoted starter Travis Wood gave up an RBI single to Gordon.

Maddon though it was the right time to get Wada.

“If he goes 1, 2, 3 there, beautiful. I took the walk as a sign that maybe that was the Waterloo moment right there,” Maddon said. “From my perspective I’m seeing a little bit of laboring.”

Before the game, there was a moment of silence for Lennie Merullo. He died Saturday at 98 and was the oldest former Cubs player, and the last living member of their 1945 World Series team.

The Cubs and the Royals both wore 1915 throwback uniforms. The Cubs wore Chicago Whales uniforms and the Royals broke out the Kansas City Packers threads.

UP NEXT

Royals: Start a six-game homestand vs. the Indians on Tuesday. Jeremy Guthrie (4-3) is scheduled to make his 10th start of the season. He will try to bounce back from his worst outing of his career when he gave up 11 runs on nine hits, three walks in one-plus inning against the Yankees on May 25.

Cubs: Begin a nine-game road trip in Miami on Monday. Jason Hammel (3-2) is the scheduled starter. In eight games against Miami, he is 1/3 with a 4.86 ERA.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Martinez honors late Taveras, pitches St. Louis past Dodgers

riggertCardinalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Once he wiped away the tears, Carlos Martinez went to work.

Martinez watched an emotional pregame tribute to late teammate and best friend Oscar Taveras, then pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 Sunday.

“When (I) went out to start, (I) was just about `OK, this is an opportunity to take this win for Oscar, to play hard, to compete, to get my focus and do it for him,” Martinez said through an interpreter.

Jhonny Peralta homered and drove in all three runs for the Cardinals.

On the one-year anniversary of Taveras’ major league debut, his family was on the field to honor him. Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic in October.

Martinez was best friends with Taveras, and is wearing the outfielder’s No. 18 this season.

Martinez (5-2) struck out eight and extended his scoreless-inning streak to 20 1-3.

“He was great, maybe one of his best yet,” manager Mike Matheny said. “Just from the first pitch and his last one, he turned it up a notch.”

“He was just very consistent with everything he had. He had great movement and great poise. Today was just a very tough test for him all the way around and he answered,” he said.

Trevor Rosenthal earned his 15th save in 16 tries. Justin Turner was ejected by plate umpire Marty Foster for arguing after looking at strike three to end the game.

The Cardinals improved to 20-6 at Busch Stadium, the best home start in team history.

Joc Pederson hit his 13th homer in the Dodgers eighth. He tied Orlando Cepeda (1958) for second place for the most homers by a rookie through the month of May — Albert Pujols hit 16 in 2001.

Brett Anderson (2-3) settled in after a shaky start. The lefty retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced, striking out five out of six during that stretch.

Anderson gave up two runs on five hits and three walks in six innings.

“Maybe the worst stuff I’ve ever had in the big leagues,” he said. “Terrible. There’s not too many moral victories in this game, but the fact I gave our team a quality start and two runs with my `D-plus’ stuff in this ballpark against this team, I can take solace in that. I competed well.”

Peralta’s two-run homer in the first was his eighth this season, matching Matt Carpenter for the team lead. It was the seventh straight game in which the Cardinals scored in the opening inning.

Peralta also had to fight back his emotions during the Taveras tribute.

“It’s hard to see that on the board,” Peralta said. “Everything he do, in the first game he hit a home run, so it was good for he to hit a home run to give it him.”

Baserunning blunders cost the Cardinals in three innings.

Anderson picked off Jason Heyward in the second and Peter Bourjos in the fifth. Randal Grichuk was doubled off at first on a fly ball to right in the third.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Dodgers: LHP Paco Rodriguez (elbow) was put on the 15-day disabled list and RHP Matt West was recalled from Triple A-Oklahoma City.

Cardinals: OF Matt Holliday (flu) was a late scratch from the lineup and was replaced by Bourjos. Holliday missed Friday’s game and was taken out of Saturday’s game after extending his streak of reaching safely in 44 games to start the season.

UP NEXT

Dodgers: RHP Clayton Kershaw (3-3, 3.86 ERA) will start a four-game set at Colorado on Monday and is undefeated in his last eight starts against the Rockies going 7-0 with a 2.63 ERA during that stretch.

Cardinals: LHP Jaime Garcia (1-1, 3.46 ERA) will try improve on a 6-3 career record against the Brewers as the Cardinals continue their homestand against Milwaukee on Monday.

St. Joseph rallies for walk-off win against Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs stayed unbeaten on the season as they rallied for a 4-3 victory over Nevada Saturday night inside Phil Welch stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team fell behind 3-1 in the eighth inning before they started their comeback.  Ramsey Scott had a two-out RBI single in the eight to score Orencio Fisher but the Mustangs still trailed by one run in the final inning.

After Trent Hill flew out to left field, St. Joseph catcher Francisco Alvarez hit a solo home run to tie the game.

Humberto Medina came on in relief to throw a perfect 10th inning and then Fisher led off the bottom of the inning with a triple in the bottom of the ninth.  Anthony Maselli drove him in with a sacrifice fly and the Mustangs are now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the MINK League.

Fisher and Alvarez each had two hits and two runs scored to lead the offense.

Trent Kinney started for St. Joe and received a no-decision as he went 7.0 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits.  He struck out four and walked two.

The Mustangs play their first road game of the season Sunday at Nevada.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.

Missouri State opens NCAA Tournament with 14-1 win over Canisius

riggertMissouriStateSPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State pounded out a season-high 17 hits and rode 8.0 strong innings from Jon Harris to a 14-1 victory over Canisius in its opening game of the NCAA Springfield Regional Saturday afternoon. The Bears (46-10) erased an early deficit thanks to a five-RBI performance from Tate Matheny, as 6,756 spectators–their largest home crowd in 11 years–saw MSU stretch its win streak to 17 straight games.

The victory for Missouri State pulled the Bears to within one game of the program record for wins in a season (1986), as well as within one victory of the club’s longest win streak (April 16-May 14, 1989). It also set up a winner’s bracket matchup with Iowa (40-16) Saturday evening at 8:05 p.m.

Matheny powered the MSU offense with a 3-for-4 performance that included a pair of doubles and two walks, as well as a sixth-inning grand slam as part of an eight-run rally that matched the Bears’ most-productive inning of the season. MSU, which drew six walks and four bases from hit batsmen in addition to matching its 2015 season-high of 17 hits, turned a one-run game into a 12-1 lead by scoring 10 times in the fifth and sixth innings.

Justin Paulsen, who also homered in the sixth, finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Matt Fultz drove in three runs and scored another with a double and two sacrifice flies.

Harris (8-1) was equally as effective on the hill for the Bears, holding the Golden Griffins (34-29) to just three hits in his eight innings. The junior recovered from a leadoff home run by Connor Panas on the game’s second pitch to limit Canisius to a pair of singles over the remainder of his effort, striking out eight along the way.

The Bears mounted threats of their own in each of the first two innings, only to see Griffins starter Devon Stewart work his way out of trouble with the help of key strikeouts in both instances. After giving up a two-out double to Matheny before a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases, Stewart got Spencer Johnson to chase a two-strike offering to escape the home half of the first unharmed.

MSU loaded the bases again in the second thanks to the first of Blake Graham’s two singles that sparked the one-out rally. Back-to-back hit batsmen brought up Joey Hawkins, but Stewart fanned the MSU shortstop for the second out. Matheny then coaxed a walk to force home the tying run before a ground ball to short helped Stewart avoid a big inning.

Justin Paulsen’s liner to right started opened another scoring opportunity for the Bears in the third, as base hits by Jake Burger and Graham loaded the bases yet again before Matt Fultz’s sacrifice fly to center put MSU on top, 2-1.

The Bears would add to their lead with a two-run fifth highlighted by Fultz’s two-out double that narrowly eluded a diving Cyrus Senior in right-center. Dylan Becker followed with a second run-scoring hit to bring home Fultz for a 4-1 MSU advantage.

Matheny ignited the sixth-inning onslaught with his second double of the day, then scored on a base hit to left by Eric Cheray, who was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a double. Paulsen blasted a 2-1 pitch from Brandon Bielecki over the right-field wall for his eighth round-tripper of the season, before a pair of walks and a double by Jake Burger loaded the bags again. Fultz delivered another sac fly and Becker lined a single to left to score Burger to push the lead to seven runs.

Next, Hawkins coaxed a walk to set up just the third postseason grand slam in MSU history, as Matheny belted an 0-1 offering onto the left-field berm to make it a 12-1 game. The junior joined Alex Manary (May 25, 1995 vs. Long Beach State) and Tony Piazza (June 8, 2003 at Ohio State) on the short list of Bears’ to club grand slams in NCAA Championship play. He also became the first MSU player to record multiple hits in one inning since 2010.

MSU tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the eighth after a throwing error started the inning. Hawkins singled and Matheny drew a walk before Aaron Meyer’s ground ball scored a run and Paulsen plated his second baserunner with a single to center.

Harris cruised through the home stretch, retiring 11 straight Griffins at one point and allowing just three baserunners–all via walks–after the third inning. Senior Zach Merciez locked up the Bears’ 15th NCAA Division I Championship victory with a perfect ninth in his MSU single-season-record 30th appearance of the season.

Stewart (7-7) was tagged with the loss for Canisius after allowing the first four runs on seven MSU hits over his 4 2/3 innings. Mike Krisch was the lone Griffin to reach base multiple times, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

Mustangs win MINK League opener against Clarinda

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs stayed unbeaten on the season as they blanked the Clarinda A’s 7-0 in their MINK League opener Friday night inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team jumped out to a quick lead as they scored three runs in the first inning.  They added single runs in the third and fifth innings and scored two runs in the seventh.

Preston Felgate earned the win as he went 6.0 innings.  He allowed two hits, struck out eight batters and walked only one.

Blake Kolons, Austin Aspregren and Steve D’Amico each pitched a scoreless inning of relief as Mustangs pitchers have not allowed a run in they last 18 innings, and they’ve given up only four hits.

Anthony Maselli led St. Joseph’s eight-hit attack as he finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored.  Evan McDonald had a hit and drove in two runs, while Orencio Fisher finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Mustangs improve to 3-0 and 1-0 in the MINK League as they host Nevada on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Kansas City begins series in Chicago with a win to snap four-game skid

riggertRoyalsCHICAGO (AP) — The Kansas City Royals were sailing along with a three-run lead.

In a flash, they lost it. Then, they regrouped for a win they sorely needed.

Lorenzo Cain hit a tiebreaking RBI double and scored in a three-run eighth inning, and the Royals beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 Friday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Alcides Escobar homered on the game’s first pitch. Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez also went deep, and the Royals came out on top after squandering a 4-1 lead.

“It feels like a new day,” said Eric Hosmer, who had an RBI double.

Mike Moustakas walked leading off the eighth against Pedro Strop (1-3). Cain, who had three hits, then drove him in with a double to the base of the wall in right-center, and the Royals scored two more thanks to an error by center fielder Dexter Fowler with two out and Justin Grimm pitching.

Fowler dropped Omar Infante’s liner trying to make a shoestring catch with runners on first and second, then fell trying to pick up the ball. Cain and Hosmer scored, making it 7-4, and the Royals got back to winning after a three-game sweep by the Yankees in New York.

Edinson Volquez was making it look easy before Chicago’s Jorge Soler chased him with a two-run homer with two out in the sixth. He connected on a 3-0 pitch, making it 4-3.

Kelvin Herrera (1-1) gave up a tying solo drive to Addison Russell in the seventh but picked up the win. Wade Davis struck out the side in the eighth and Greg Holland worked the ninth.

“We played well today,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “We had them on the ropes. They showed why they went to the World Series last year. We showed why we’re not ready yet.”

Volquez was in line to win his third straight start before the late rally. The right-hander allowed three runs and six hits, struck out a season-high nine and walked one.

Jake Arrieta lasted seven innings, allowing four runs and eight hits. He struck out five without a walk.

Kansas City, making its first appearance at Wrigley Field since 2001, wasted no time jumping ahead in this one.

Outscored 29-5 over the previous four games, the Royals immediately grabbed the lead when Escobar drove the first pitch to the bleachers in left-center for his second home run. It was also his second career leadoff homer, both coming this season.

“We needed to have this win today,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We didn’t want to take the five in a row. That’s a much improved club over there. They’ve really got some nice young talented players.”

SVEUM BACK

Royals hitting coach Dale Sveum was back at Wrigley Field for the first time since he was fired as Cubs manager following the 2013 season. The ballpark, in the early stage of an overhaul, is looking different, with two large new video boards and new bleachers in the outfield. “It’s a little way from what you’re used to, but in the long run I think it’s going to be all right,” he said.

STINGY WITH HOMERS

Russell’s homer was the second allowed by Herrera this season after he went 105 1/3 innings without allowing one. Cleveland’s Lonnie Chisenhall connected against him on May 5.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: OF Alex Rios is expected to return to the Royals’ lineup Saturday after being sidelined by a broken left hand since April 13 when he was hit by a pitch from Minnesota’s J.R. Graham.

Cubs: The Cubs pushed RHP Jason Hammel’s start back a day to Sunday to give him some extra rest. Manager Joe Maddon said he is fine.

UP NEXT

RHP Yordano Ventura (3-4, 4.64) starts for Kansas City, with LHP Tsuyoshi Wada making his third start for Chicago since returning from a strained left groin.
