Tigers’ Cunningham named to Wooden Award late season top 20 list

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women’s Basketball senior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) is one of 20 athletes named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 list, as announced by ESPN. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2019 John R. Wooden Award Women’s Player of the Year, presented by Wendy’s, the nation’s top individual honor.

Last season, Cunningham was named to the Wooden Award preseason top 30, midseason top 25, late season top 20 and the national ballot.

The watch list will be narrowed to 15 finalists and will be revealed before the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the Wooden Award will be announced April 12 at the College Basketball Awards.

Cunningham was named the SEC Player of the Week on Jan. 21 and is averaging 17.8 points per game over her last 15 contests. The SEC honor was a conference-leading 10th for Cunningham, and the fourth time she has been named the SEC Player of the Week. In 2015-16, Cunningham earned a conference record six Freshman of the Week honors. On the season, Cunningham ranks fifth in the SEC in scoring with 16.6 points per game.

Cunningham scored 30 points and drained a season-high six three-pointers in Mizzou’s 74-65 win over Auburn on Jan. 27, moving the Tiger senior into third-place on Mizzou’s all-time scoring list with 1,928 points. She surpassed Julie Helm, who scored 1,925 points from 1996-00. Cunningham also reached 200 made three-pointers in the game, becoming just the third player in Mizzou history to reach that mark.

Cunningham’s 30-point game was her second of the season, and the ninth of her career. She is the SEC’s only player this season to record multiple 30-point games, and now has the third-most 30-point games of any Mizzou player (nine), trailing only Renee Kelly’s 16 and Joni Davis’ 13. In Cunningham’s 30-point performances, Mizzou is 7-2 overall.

Cunningham is the SEC career active scoring leader with 1,942 points, and ranks sixth in career rebounds (626) and seventh in assists (361). Among program records, Cunningham currently ranks second in career three-point percentage (.407), third in scoring (1,942 points), third in free throw percentage (.829), third in three-pointers made (204), fourth in career points per game (16.6) and fifth in assists (361).

Last season, Cunningham earned AP All-America Honorable Mention and All-SEC First Team honors for the second consecutive season after averaging 18.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She was the only player in the nation to shoot better than 54 percent from the field (54.2 percent, 186-for-343), 45 percent from three (45.7 percent, 69-for-151) and 83 percent from the free throw line (83.6 percent, 133-for-159).

Mizzou returns home to Mizzou Arena to face No. 18 Texas A&M on Thursday, Feb. 7. Tipoff from Mizzou Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m.

St. Joseph Christian to co-op with Northland Christian and play 11-man football

St. Joseph Christan is excited to announce that St. Joseph Christian School (St. Joseph, MO) and Northland Christian School (Kansas City, MO) will enter a cooperative sponsorship in football for the 2019-2020 school year. This move will be a great benefit to both schools as they work towards strong, sustainable programs of their own in the future.

The St. Joseph Christian program, celebrating its 20 th season this fall, won the Missouri 8-man state championship in 2006, and finished as a runner up in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Northland Christian will be offering football for the first time, making fall of 2019 their inaugural season.

The combined enrollments of the schools place the co-op at the 11-man level of MSSHAA football. St. Joseph Christian’s Troy Schenk brings 16 years of coaching experience, with 15 of those years at the college level, to the head coach position for the co-op. Northland Christian’s Jeff Rich will be serving as the assistant coach, with 17 years of coaching experience.

“I am beyond excited to have the Northland Christian Football Team co-oping with us here at St. Joseph Christian. This whole process is a great fit for both schools. I understand there will be challenges along the way but have full confidence in both schools’ leadership to overcome those challenges. The goal is to have a football program that seeks to honor God and help to develop young men who will one day be great leaders, husbands, and fathers that love Jesus.  I can say with great certainty that the football team at SJCS can hardly wait to welcome our new brothers from Northland Christian to the football family!” Coach Schenk.

“I am excited and honored to be part of the inaugural football coaching staff at Northland Christian. I am convinced we could not have found a more perfect partnership than with St. Joseph Christian. The opportunities ahead for our students, staff, and community are tremendous. I truly feel blessed.” Assistant Coach Rich.

Other assistant coaches will be assembled in the upcoming weeks. The co-op will keep the name of St. Joseph Christian School with an emphasis on the name “Christian” which is in the name of, and is the identity of, both schools. St. Joseph Christian School will not be competing in the Grand River Conference in 11-man football for the 2019-2020 school year due to the schedule already being completed.

Chiefs QB Mahomes takes MVP and top offensive player awards

ATLANTA (AP) — Patrick Mahomes’ breathtaking breakthrough season earned him the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award.

The Chiefs quarterback landed a pair of honors at NFL Honors on Saturday night, taking The Associated Press 2018 MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards. In his second pro season, Mahomes led Kansas City to its first AFC title game since 1993 with some of the most creative and clutch plays the league has seen in years.

“I’m so humbled,” he said. “This is just the beginning. We’ve got a long ways to go.

“It is an honor. It’s a hard award to win. The next award I hope I can get is the Super Bowl.”

Mahomes received 41 votes from a nationwide panel of media members who regularly cover the league. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees got the other nine.

With only one previous start, Mahomes entered the season as something of a curiosity in Kansas City after the Chiefs traded veteran Alex Smith to open up the job. It didn’t take long to erase any doubts as Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first AFC title game since the 1993 season, throwing for 50 touchdowns, 5,097 yards and had a 113.8 QB rating, trailing only Brees.

Mahomes’ ingenuity — the guy can throw from all angles and make plays inside and outside the pocket — energized the Chiefs’ fan base and excited fans across the league.

“The play is never dead. He can find new ways to get you the ball,” Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce said. “It may look like a screwball, a slider here or there, but it’ll get to you eventually.”

Mahomes is the sixth straight quarterback and 11th of the past 12 years to win MVP. No Kansas City player had won the award since the Chiefs joined the NFL in 1970.

Earlier, he was selected as the top offensive player, beating Brees 30 votes to 16.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s awesome … I got put into a great situation,” he said. “I got to learn behind a great quarterback in Alex Smith. I got to be on a team with a lot of playmakers who helped me excel my game and make me look really good on a daily basis. And, then, to be able to go out there and win football games in front of a passionate fan base is something I get the luxury of doing.”

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who will play in Sunday’s Super Bowl against New England, took his second straight Defensive Player of the Year award.

Donald, the only unanimous All-Pro this season and the first Rams player selected for top defensive honor, joins Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as players to win the award in back-to-back seasons. Donald led the NFL with 20½ sacks.

“Any time you put a body of work into it and then it pays off,” Donald said, “and you’re rewarded for it, it means a lot. It’s a blessing.”

Chicago’s Matt Nagy, in his first season with the Bears, was voted Coach of the Year.

Nagy has overseen the development of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who blossomed in his second pro season, and saw a defense befitting the “Monsters of the Midway” dominate opponents at times. He is the fifth Bears coach to win the award, joining team founder George Halas (1963, 1965), Mike Ditka (1985, 1988), Dick Jauron (2001) and Lovie Smith (2005).

“It’s crazy to think this is one person, so for me, it’s being a part of this organization and for our players,” Nagy said. “Just being able to believe in what we wanted to do with our culture and then follow through with it.”

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was chosen the Comeback Player of the Year, following a lost 2017 season to a shoulder injury with a sensational 2018 campaign.

“I truly believe there are players on every team, every roster that could be Comeback Player of the Year in their own ways,” he said. “Honestly, the best part was playing football again — having fun playing football and being pain free.”

Giants running back Saquon Barkley was the top offensive rookie, while the defensive rookie award went to Indianapolis linebacker Darius Leonard.

Described by some as a “generational running back,” Barkley rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns behind a weak New York offensive line. He drew 26½ votes and edged Baker Mayfield. The Cleveland quarterback who was selected first overall in the draft, one spot in front of Barkley, earned 21½ votes.

Barkley also made a team-high 91 receptions for 721 yards, and his 2,028 yards from scrimmage led the NFL.

For his work as defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, Vic Fangio got the head coaching gig in Denver. He also won The Associated Press 2018 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award on Saturday.

Philadelphia Eagles DE Chris Long won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for community service.

“I don’t know, I’m very humbled,” Long said. “It’s hard to feel deserving with those guys on stage and, obviously, this guy right here on the statue. It’s a very heavy statue and it makes sense because his legacy is immense. I’m just honored.”
