Northwest Missouri State splits two baseball games Wednesday

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University baseball team earned a mid-week split in a pair of non-conference games on the road on Wednesday.

Culver-Stockton beat the Bearcats in game one in Canton, Mo., 6-3.  And in the nightcap, Northwest traveled to Quincy, Ill., and beat Quincy University, 4-3, in 13 innings.

The Bearcats are now 13-13 overall.

Against Culver-Stockton, Northwest scored two runs in the second and one run in the third, while the Wildcats had a six-run third inning.

Northwest used five pitchers on the day. John Osborne started, going 2.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Steven Garber was 2-for-3 with a double, while Kevin Handzlik and James Holler each picked up two hits and each scored a run. Holler and Zach Douglas each had an RBI.

Against Quincy, the Bearcats got the game started with a run in the top of the first as Nick Gotta drew a walk to begin the game and came around to score on a double play ball from  Johnson. Gotta was aided by a wild pitch that advanced him to second during Derek Meyer’s at bat.

In the second inning with one out, Greenslade reached on an error by the first baseman and moved to second on a Hardegree single. Both runners moved up on a Garrett Fort groundout, putting runners on second and third with two out. Austin Wulff hit an 0-1 offering up the middle for a single, scoring both Greenslade and Hardegree, making it 3-0 Northwest.

In the top of the 13th inning, Aaron Barratt drew a one out walk and moved to second on an infield single from Johnson. Garber took an 0-1 pitch down the left field line for a double to drive in Barratt with the go ahead run.

In the bottom of the 13th, Henrich came on for his second inning of work and put the Hawks down in order for the win.

The Bearcats return to MIAA play starting on Friday, March 27, with a 4 p.m. game against Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan. Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. followed by a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.

Bearcat softball gets swept at William Jewell

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State softball team dropped both games in Wednesday’s doubleheader against William Jewell in Liberty, Mo.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead in game one, but WJC rallied to win, 4-3, while three Northwest home runs in game two were not enough to overcome a barrage of Cardinal hits as the Bearcats lost 8-5.

Northwest Missouri State is now 9-15 on the season, while William Jewell improves to 15-8.

In game one, Stephanie Mark reached base in all four of her at bats, hitting a home run and a single while drawing two walks. The senior drove in two runs and scored another.

Torri Blythe drove her first double of the year to deep center, finishing 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Rebecca Maher smacked a pair of singles and drove in one run.

Sarah Baldwin threw six solid innings for the Bearcats, giving up three earned runs on nine hits to take the loss. The senior struck out three and did not walk a batter.

In game two, Mark crushed two more home runs and added a single at the dish.  Chantel Adams finished 4-for-4 with four singles, while Maher belted her third home run of the season, driving in two runs.

Abbie Vitosh got the start in game two, throwing 3 1/3 innings and giving up five runs on nine hits to take the loss.

Missouri Western ranked No. 17 in the latest NFCA Top 25 softball poll

riggertMissouriWesternThe recent success of the Missouri Western Softball team has vaulted the Griffons into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

It’s the first time MWSU has appeared in the poll as they enter at No. 17.  Western is now 21-9 and 6-2 in the MIAA as they’ve won 12 consecutive games.

Last week the Griffons picked up wins over Augustana, which moved from 24th last week to 18th this week, and Winona State, which was 14th but fell outside the top 25 this week.

MWSU will look to extend its win streak and remain unbeaten at home when the host Lindenwood on Friday and Lincoln on Saturday in MIAA doubleheaders.

Wacha throws well as Cardinals defeat Washington 1-0

riggertCardinalsJUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Max Scherzer looked amply ready to start on opening day for Washington, striking out nine in six shutout innings during the Nationals’ 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Nationals manager Matt Williams recently announced that the newly acquired Scherzer would make his first career start in an opener. Washington begins at home against the New York Mets on April 6.

Making his fifth start of the spring, the former AL Cy Young Award winner allowed only three hits. He didn’t walk anyone and threw 59 of 82 pitches for strikes.

“That was a result of me executing pitches today,” Scherzer said. “I felt like I did a good job of generating swings and misses with all my pitches, but more importantly I didn’t walk anybody. I was pounding the zone.”

“I think I only fell behind two hitters, too, so that’s a more telling number than anything,” he said.

Scherzer also hit Matt Carpenter with a pitch. The Cardinals said he had a bruise on his right quadriceps.

“He wasn’t happy about it, but it was one of those things that it hit him kind of square on the quad and that can potentially lead to something else, so why mess with it?” manager Mike Matheny said.

Matheny also removed Kolten Wong as a precaution after the second baseman was hit by a pitch leading off the eighth.

Cardinals starter Michael Wacha also enjoyed a strong outing, giving up four hits in 5 2/3 innings and striking out four.

Wacha retired 13 of 14 batters at one stretch, a string only interrupted by his first walk this spring.

Ty Kelly hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

STARTING TIME

Nationals: Stephen Strasburg threw a bullpen on Tuesday and is ready to appear in a Grapefruit League game, manager Matt Williams said. Strasburg rolled an ankle in the weight room, causing him to miss what would have been his third scheduled spring start.

“We’ll just slate him in later on at the end of the week,” Williams said.

Cardinals: Matheny said John Lackey will start in Friday’s split-squad game at Roger Dean Stadium against the Mets, while Carlos Martinez will head to Viera to face the Nationals.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Nationals: Jayson Werth played only in the field in a minor league game on Wednesday. Afterward, he was scheduled to get more aggressive with his batting practice. Werth underwent offseason shoulder surgery and has yet to appear in an exhibition game.

“I’m encouraged by him,” Williams said. “There’s no issue with throwing, so that’s a good sign.”

Closer Drew Storen appeared in a minor league game on Wednesday. He underwent surgery to repair a broken non-throwing hand earlier this spring. He is expected to be ready for the start of the season.

Cardinals: Tommy Pham, whose candidacy for the final outfield spot is running out of time, did some running before the game but still isn’t ready to play because of a quad injury.

“I don’t think he’s that far away,” Matheny said.

MIDSEASON FORM

The Cardinals’ lineup looked much the same as it is expected to look once the season begins, which means Jon Jay hitting seventh and Wong batting eighth. To Matheny, that’s a formidable look.

“That’s not a whole lot of time for the opposing team to breathe,” Matheny said. “Either one of those guys could really hurt you at any time.”

UP NEXT

Nationals: Gio Gonzalez makes his fourth spring start, facing the Nationals.

Cardinals: Adam Wainwright will make his second spring start when St. Louis is at home against Henderson Alvarez and Miami.

Griffons work around rain delays to defeat Rockhurst 13-2

riggertMissouriWesternKANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a couple of rain delays Tuesday night, the Missouri Western baseball team picked up a non-conference win at Rockhurst 13-2.

Pushed back two hours from the original start time due to rain, the teams didn’t get through the first inning before rain forced another delay with the Griffons leading 3-0. When play resumed, little changed as Missouri Western put on an offensive performance more consistent with what the team has been used to of late.

The Griffons piled on 16 hits, scoring three in the first, two in the fourth and sixth and three runs in the eighth and again in the ninth inning. In the first, MWSU got RBIs from Cosimo Cannella, Mitch Thorman and Dylon Koch. Missouri Western took a 5-0 lead in the fourth when Trevor LaHonta and Brandon Downs scored after David Glaude reached on an error. Grant Woods allowed a leadoff single and two walks in the bottom of the fifth before he was replaced by Weston Caindec. Caindec induced the second out of the inning before giving up a single that pulled the Hawks within two. Caindec picked up the win, going two and two-thirds, with two hits and two strikeouts. The junior reliever ran his scoreless innings streak to over 12. He hasn’t surrendered a run since Feb. 20 at Emporia State. The bullpen kept home plate closed the rest of the way as the Griffon offense continued to tack onto the lead.

Cody Childs drove in one in the sixth with a single before Cannella drove Childs home later in the inning to put MWSU up 7-2. Cannella made it 10-2 in the eighth with a two-RBI double to left and RBIs from Ryan Degner, Childs and Jerico Burasco pushed the Griffon lead to 13-2 in the top of the ninth. Cannella finished the evening 3-6 with four RBIs. Degner and Childs both went 2-3 with Childs driving in two and scoring four. Downs finished 3-5 with two runs scored and LaHonta went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored.

The win pushed Missouri Western to 17-9 overall. The team puts its 5-0 record at the Spring Sports Complex on the line this weekend when it hosts nationally ranked and MIAA leading Missouri Southern in a four-game series that begins Friday at 2 p.m.

Hopefully, they will learn from this experience and make the necessary progress to continue their basketball careers elsewhere.”
