Missouri Western soccer defeats Lindenwood in double OT

MWSUThe Missouri Western women’s soccer team outlasted Lindenwood on Sunday at Spratt Stadium as they defeated Lindenwood in double overtime 2-1.  The Griffons improve their record to 9-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in conference.

In the first half, Lindenwood was able to get a quick strike in the ninth minute of the game with a goal coming from Becky Roberts just outside the box.  She capitalized on a deflected ball to put her seventh goal of the season in the back of the net. The Griffons were held in check for the half only creating two shots on goal. Sydney Cluck and K.C. Ramsell each tallied one.

Missouri Western was able to create opportunities early in the second half with two Sydney Andrews’s free kicks. Andrews hit the crossbar on one shot and sent the other just wide of the goal. The Griffons found the back of the net in the 68th minute of the game when freshman Ashlyn Powers scored her first goal of the season and career.

In overtime, Sydney Andrew made the most of her free kick opportunity striking a laser from the 45 yard mark over the goalkeepers head. The goal was Andrews’s second of the year.

Sarah Lyle recorded two saves on the day to help the Griffons secure the victory.

The Griffons will play their final regular season home game against Northwest Missouri State this Friday 7:00 p.m.

Chiefs score 34 unanswered points in rout of Rams

riggertChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles shredded the Rams on a pair of touchdown runs. Knile Davis returned a kickoff 99 yards for another score. The Chiefs sacked St. Louis quarterback Austin Davis seven times.

If there was a fourth phase to football, Kansas City probably would have dominated that, too.

After spotting their cross-state rivals the first touchdown, the Chiefs turned up the pressure in every way Sunday. The result was a 34-7 victory, their sixth straight in the series dating to Sept. 24, 1994, when the Rams were still based in Los Angeles.

“Any time you play good in all three facets, you’re going to win a lot of games,” said Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, “and it felt like we did that.”

Charles, who last week became the Chiefs’ career rushing leader, powered over the left side of the line for a touchdown in the first quarter. He added a 36-yard score early in the fourth, dodging a defender at the line of scrimmage and then accelerating past the Rams’ defense.

Cairo Santos added a pair of field goals for Kansas City (4-3), including a career-best 53-yarder right before halftime. Smith was 24 of 28 for 226 yards, and Davis capped the string of 34 unanswered points with a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

By that point, the banged-up Rams (2-5) were just trying to survive.

“It’s disappointing,” said coach Jeff Fisher, whose team was coming off a victory over Seattle. “We had a great week, a short-lived bit of momentum, and we weren’t able to put it all together.”

Austin Davis finished 15 of 25 for 160 yards with a touchdown and an interception, three of his sacks coming at the hands of Justin Houston. It didn’t help that left tackle Jake Long, right guard Rodger Saffold and center Scott Wells sustained injuries during the game.

The Rams were also playing with an injury-depleted defensive backfield.

“You looked at the injuries they had today, they had three or four rookies starting for them on the defensive side,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “That’s tough.”

The Rams’ running back by committee proved to be a bust, too. Benny Cunningham, Zac Stacy and Tre Mason were bottled up all game, and St. Louis managed just 84 yards on 19 carries.

“They took some things away and when that happens you’ve got to find a way to get some momentum offensively,” Davis said, “and we weren’t able to do that. But my hat really goes off to them. They did a really good job and made a lot of good plays.”

The Rams jumped to a 7-0 lead on a pass from Davis to tight end Lance Kendricks on the opening series, but everything went the Chiefs’ way the rest of the game.

Special teams had a lot to do with it.

One week after the Rams used two long returns and an audacious punt fake to beat Seattle, they watched as Greg Zuerlein missed a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter to keep the game 7-7.

Santos hit his 53-yarder for a 10-7 lead right before halftime.

The Chiefs got the ball back to start the third quarter. Knile Davis fielded the kickoff on a bounce, veered to his right and picked up a key block from James-Michael Johnson before going the rest of the way for his second career TD return.

Davis, who also had a franchise-long 108-yard kickoff return touchdown as a rookie in 2013, is the fifth player in history with a kickoff-return touchdown of at least 99 yards in each of his first two NFL seasons.

Santos added his second field-goal and Charles punctuated a big day for the offense when he took a carry up the middle, left a defender grasping for air and outran the entire secondary for his second score of the game.

Davis added a 3-yard touchdown plunge in the final minutes as chants of “Let’s Go Royals” filled Arrowhead Stadium.

“We clearly got outplayed in the second half of this game in all three phases,” Fisher said. “It wasn’t a good effort and we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Mizzou holds off Vanderbilt to stop 2-game home losing streak

riggertMizzouCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Bud Sasser scored two touchdowns and Russell Hansbrough added another to lead Missouri past Vanderbilt 24-14 Saturday and end a two-game home losing streak.

After scoring twice apiece on special teams and defense last week at Florida, the Tigers (6-2, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) used three touchdowns by their offense against the Commodores (2-6, 0-5).

Missouri gained 385 total yards, easily eclipsing its combined total of 266 yards in its last two games. Maty Mauk completed 11 of 23 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns while Marcus Murphy added 93 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Johnny McCrary completed 17 of 31 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start for Vanderbilt, becoming the team’s fourth quarterback to start this season because of injuries.

Missouri leaned heavily on its rushing attack, running 46 times for 244 yards compared to 23 passing attempts. Missouri possessed the ball for 31:09, passing the 30-minute mark for the first time in four games.

While the Tigers struggled to maintain much of a rhythm offensively, they did enough to take advantage of a Vanderbilt defense allowing a league-worst 34 points per game.

Sasser finished with 74 receiving yards, including 13 on a touchdown pass from Mauk with 2:27 left in the third quarter on the heels of a 36-yard run by Mauk, who shook off some of the frustrations of a 20-yard performance last week.

The score provided Missouri a 17-7 advantage, but C.J. Duncan pulled the Commodores to within three points after hauling in an over-the-shoulder, 29-yard touchdown pass from McCrary with 6:53 remaining.

The freshman-to-freshman play capped a 76-yard drive.

Despite Vanderbilt having 31 freshmen receiving playing time this season, and a winless conference record, the team trailed by just a field goal with fewer than three minutes remaining and Missouri facing a 2nd-and-20 on Vanderbilt’s 44-yard line.

But linebacker Stephen Weatherly grabbed Mauk’s facemask on a run, giving the Tigers a first down on the Commodores’ 19-yard line. Two plays later, Mauk found Sasser in the back corner of the end zone for a 26-yard score.

Vanderbilt finished with 240 yards, including only 44 on the ground, and only 53 on its first four drives. The Commodores then traveled 75 yards on their next possession as McCrary found fourth-string tight end Nathan Marcus for a 9-yard touchdown.

The touchdown narrowed Vanderbilt’s deficit to 10-7 with eight second remaining in the first half after Hansbrough scored on a 10-yard run three minutes earlier. Missouri’s running backs accounted for all 77 yards on the drive, including 10 carries for 60 yards and a 17-yard reception by Hansbrough, who finished with 87 yards rushing.

Griffon volleyball stays hot with sweep of Missouri Southern

MWSUThe Missouri Western volleyball continued its historic pace with a 3-0 victory over Missouri Southern Friday night in the MWSU Fieldhouse. It was the team’s 12th win in its last 13 matches and leaves them tied atop the MIAA standings.

The Griffons jumped on the Lions early with 25-14 and 25-12 wins in the first two sets. Missouri Southern came out strong in the third and put MWSU down early but the Griffons rallied back for a 25-22 win.

Jessie Thorup led the team with 14 kills and a .524 hitting percentage. Lindsey Partridge chipped in seven kills with a .636 attack percentage. Erica Rottinghause added 10 kills and Jordan Chohon had five, including three straight unassisted kills.

Missouri Western is now 18-4 overall and 12-2 in the MIAA. A loss by Central Missouri Friday night separated a three way tie atop the MIAA. The Griffons are now tied for first with Nebraska Kearney and face third place Central Oklahoma Saturday night in the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Royals hold off San Francisco to take 2-1 World Series lead

riggertRoyalsSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sparkling defense, a stingy bullpen and just enough timely hitting. That winning formula of fundamental baseball put the Kansas City Royals ahead in the World Series.

Jeremy Guthrie outpitched fellow World Series newcomer Tim Hudson, four Royals relievers combined on four hitless innings and Kansas City beat the San Francisco Giants 3-2 Friday night for a 2-1 lead in the Fall Classic.

“This is the way our games have gone all year,” said Royals manager Ned Yost, who made several lineup changes that paid off. “I’m getting really good at protecting a one-run lead because a lot of times that’s exactly what we have to deal with.

“But I have the necessary tools to be able to do that. It’s not me doing it. It’s the guys that we put out there that are doing it. We have the type of pitchers in our bullpen that can accomplish that,” he said.

Alex Gordon hit a run-scoring double for his first hit of the Series in 10 at-bats and Lorenzo Cain made two slick grabs in right field as the Royals backed Guthrie with nifty glove work. All night long, Kansas City looked perfectly comfortable playing in the tricky territory at unfamiliar AT&T Park.

Eric Hosmer had a sixth-inning RBI single in an 11-pitch at-bat against lefty Javier Lopez for his first World Series hit — on his 25th birthday.

Cain drove in the first run with a groundout after Alcides Escobar’s leadoff double in the first.

Game 4 is Saturday night, with right-hander Ryan Vogelsong trying to get the Giants even against Kansas City lefty Jason Vargas.

“We’ve got to keep grinding. It’s going to be a tough series,” said Royals center fielder Jarrod Dyson, added to the starting lineup in Game 3.

Yost moved Cain from center field to right in place of Norichika Aoki for a defensive boost in the expansive outfield at AT&T Park. Cain chased down Buster Posey’s slicing line drive in the first for a pretty catch from his knees, then snagged Travis Ishikawa’s sinking liner in the second.

Gordon was moved up from sixth to second in the lineup and came through with his RBI double following Escobar’s single in the sixth.

On a night that began with a remembrance of late Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, Kansas City produced just enough run support even without designated hitter Billy Butler. The Series shifted to AT&T Park and National League rules for three games.

The Giants had their six-game home winning streak in the World Series snapped. The unbeaten run dated to the 2002 wild-card club of Barry Bonds and Co. that lost in seven games to the Angels.

The Royals seemed unfazed by the fanfare and tough conditions in improving to 5-0 on the road this postseason. Of the first 56 times the World Series was tied 1-all, the Game 3 winner went on to win in 37 of those instances and four of the last five.

A cast of Giants Hall of Famers were celebrated on the field in a star-studded pregame featuring a “Play Ball!” chant by Huey Lewis.

Pinch hitter Michael Morse hit an RBI double with none out in the sixth to chase Guthrie. Yost turned it over to his fantastic bullpen, and Kelvin Herrera immediately walked Gregor Blanco.

With the hard-throwing Herrera clocking 99-101 mph on the radar gun, Joe Panik had a tough time attempting a sacrifice bunt. His high-bouncing grounder still did the trick to advance both runners, and Posey pulled the Giants to 3-2 on a groundout.

Then, the Royals shut down San Francisco the rest of the way.

“I don’t know if there’s a better bullpen, because that seventh, eighth and ninth inning, and you get a tough go when you’re facing those guys,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Hopefully you get some runs early, but Guthrie did a great job on us.”

Herrera worked 1 1/3 innings, rookie Brandon Finnegan got two outs in his World Series debut, and Wade Davis pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. Greg Holland got three outs for a save.

The four hitless innings of relief were the most in the World Series in 22 years.

“Our bullpen’s been lights out. We’ve got 100 percent confidence in (those) guys getting their job done,” Dyson said. “From an offensive standpoint, we’re just trying to put runs on the board and get them in position.”

Guthrie, who attended nearby Stanford, retired 10 straight during one stretch and combined with Hudson to retire 20 in a row. That was the longest Series streak since the Yankees’ Don Larsen and the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Sal Maglie retired the first 23 batters during Larsen’s perfect game in 1956, according to STATS.

“What a gutsy performance, and that’s one of the performances we needed right now, to be able to take this first one here,” Royals teammate James Shields said. “He went out there and pitched his heart out. He did a phenomenal job tonight.”

As a gorgeous Bay Area afternoon turned into a breezy night along the water, the 39-year-old Hudson left in the sixth to a rousing ovation from the orange towel-twirling sellout crowd.

Hudson waited 16 years for his first World Series chance only to watch Alcides Escobar hit the game’s first pitch for a double. Escobar scored on Cain’s groundout, and Hudson settled in nicely after the second. The right-hander retired 12 in a row before Escobar’s one-out single through Hudson’s legs in the sixth. Gordon followed with an RBI double.

GUTHRIE’S MARK

In a quirky stat, Guthrie became the fifth starting pitcher in World Series history to not record a walk or a strikeout through five innings and the first since Hall of Famer Greg Maddux in Game 2 of the 1996 Series for Atlanta against the Yankees.

UP NEXT

Royals: Vargas, an 11-game winner who pitched the ALCS clincher against Baltimore, attended Game 1 of the Giants’ 2010 World Series at AT&T Park against Texas with his wife as a fan.

Giants: Vogelsong is the only pitcher to yield no more than one run in his first five postseason starts. That run ended in the NL Championship Series when Vogelsong allowed four runs in three innings of a no-decision against St. Louis. … San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said he and pitching coach Dave Righetti discussed going with ace lefty Madison Bumgarner in Game 4 on short rest if trailing — something they know he can handle physically despite his heavy workload.
