Missouri Western baseball completes 4-game sweep of Northeastern State

MWSUMissouri Western baseball picked up the series sweep against Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at the Spring Sports Complex.

The Griffons picked up two wins on Friday against the RiverHawks and continued their winning ways, taking a 6-5 victory in Game One and winning Game Two 6-2. The RiverHawks are 2-6, 0-4 in the MIAA and Missouri Western sits at 6-3 overall with a 4-0 conference record.

Game 1: Missouri Western 6, Northeastern State 5, 11 Innings

In the first game, Missouri Western fell behind 2-0 after two innings. Mason Queen pitched well in the first seven innings, but after the Griffons tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth, the RiverHawks took a 3-2 lead after RiverHawks second baseman Braden Brown stole home. Missouri Western came back, however.

Behind one run, the Griffons found enough hits to come back in the game to tie it a three and send it to extra innings. Again, the RiverHawks had a chance to win with a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth.

But Missouri Western matched two runs in the bottom of the inning to send it to the 10th.

Will Carter, who finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI, belted a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning for the walk off. The homer gave the Griffons a 6-5 victory before game two.

Game 2: Missouri Western 6, Northeastern State 2

The Griffons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and led the rest of the way to close out the series sweep.

Trevor LaHonta went 2-for-3 and David Chew went 2-for-3 to pace the Griffons. Dylan Roades picked up the win pitching five innings and didn’t give up a run.

After taking the 3-run lead, the Griffons added two runs in the bottom of the fifth before both teams swapped scores in the sixth. Northeastern State added a run in the top of the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Griffons won 6-2.

The Griffons return to action next weekend in a four-game series against Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo.

Carter finished the day with four hits on eight at bats. He also added three RBI with the home run.

No. 8 Kansas rips No. 19 Texas, 85-54

KULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Andrew Wiggins exacted a little bit of revenge on Texas.

So did the rest of the Jayhawks.

On the eve of his 19th birthday, the freshman put on a dazzling display of outside shooting and rim-rattling dunks. Wiggins finished with 21 points to lead the eighth-ranked Jayhawks to an 85-54 rout of No. 19 Texas, helping them seize control of the Big 12 race.

It was a far different outcome than the first time the teams met, three weeks ago in Austin. Texas rolled to an 81-69 victory, and Wiggins managed seven points on 2-for-12 shooting.

“We wanted to come out aggressive,” Wiggins said. “Last time we got embarrassed at their place. We wanted to do the same thing to them, win every minute of every possession.”

They just about accomplished it.

Joel Embiid added 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks for the Jayhawks (21-6, 12-2), who lead the league race by three games with four to play. Kansas can wrap up at least a share of its 10th straight title when Oklahoma visits Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night.

“That was our first goal to start the year off, to win a 10th straight Big 12 championship,” said Frank Mason, who had 14 points off the bench. “That’s still our goal.”

Jonathan Holmes scored 17 points and Cameron Ridley had 11 for Texas, but they were about the only guys wearing burnt orange who seemed to solve the Jayhawks’ gritty man-to-man defense.

Freshman guard Isaiah Taylor was held to just five points on 1-for-14 shooting, while Javan Felix was 2 of 9 from the field and finished with six points.

“I talk about our guys not being as tough as we’d like them to be, which we’re not, but they are prideful,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Texas whipped us down there the first time. I said all along this game wasn’t about the league race as much as it was playing Texas.”

The game actually played out in similar fashion to the first meeting, only this time it was Kansas that played flawlessly and Texas that looked like a mess.

After the Longhorns jumped out to an 8-3 lead, they managed just one field goal over an 11-minute stretch as the Jayhawks launched a 32-5 run that put the game away.

“They were really good, obviously, and you got to know after we played as well as we played against them the first time they were going to be ready to play,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said.

Wiggins led the way for Kansas, at one point scoring 12 points during a particularly brutal 14-0 spurt. He did it in dazzling fashion, too: There was the soaring fast-break dunk, the back-to-back 3-pointers, and the alley-oop jam off a pass from Wayne Selden Jr. that left the crowd roaring so loudly that the field house floor was shaking.

“When I score early, it brings a lot of confidence to my game, especially when I hit a 3. I get on fire,” Wiggins said. “My teammates did a good job of getting me the ball.”

By the time Connor Lammert finally hit a 3-pointer with about 5 minutes left in the half, the lead had ballooned to 28-13 and the Longhorns had exhausted nearly all their timeouts.

“It can get away from you quick,” Holmes said. “One or two possessions, you can look and you’re down by six, eight and then 10 and then the game is over pretty much after that.”

Just how bad were the Longhorns in the first half? Try 6 of 29 from the field and 5 of 12 from the foul line, with five turnovers and three assists. They were dominated on the boards, dominated in the paint and, well, dominated just about everywhere else, too.

Taylor, who had 23 points in the first meeting with Kansas, was 0 for 10 from the field as the Jayhawks built a 46-18 halftime advantage. And even when Texas managed to score — as it did out of the break — Kansas often answered with two buckets in return.

It kept going like that throughout the second half as the Jayhawks outscored Texas 26-0 in transition and 38-22 in the paint, allowing them to empty their bench early.

“I think we should give a refund to the fans,” Barnes said. “Topeka YMCA probably would have given them a little better game, because we didn’t give them a good game at all.”

The Wildcats responded in the 5th when Sam O’Brien blasted a leadoff homer tying the score at one.

The Griffons responded again in the 5th capitalizing on an error by Wayne State’s second baseman. Green reached on the error and then Shelby Elliott pinch ran for her. Bishop set the Wildcats down in order in the 6th and then stranded two in the 7th picking up the victory.

Wayne State falls to 2-1 on the season as they had five hits. Kaiti Williams led the charge with two. Kelcie Bormann got the loss going six innings giving up nine hits while striking out three. She falls to 0-1 with the loss.

K-State gets tripped up at Oklahoma

KSUNORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 18 points and Isaiah Cousins added 17 to help Oklahoma beat Kansas State 86-73 and clear up the Big 12 standings with four games remaining in league play.

The runaway win helped break a three-way tie for third with Oklahoma, Kansas State and Iowa State all entering the day with 8-5 league marks. Iowa State’s 71-60 Saturday win over TCU kept the Cyclones knotted with the Sooners.

Oklahoma (20-7, 9-5) dominated in nearly every category, leading by as many as 27 points in the second half.

The Sooners took their first lead 3 minutes in when Hield drained a 3-pointer following a Kansas State turnover. From there, Oklahoma outscored the Wildcats 34-17 to lead 41-22 at the half.

Cameron Clark scored 11 and Jordan Woodard added 10 for the Sooners, who have won three of their last four games going into Monday night at Kansas.

Marcus Foster led Kansas State with 21 points. Nigel Johnson scored 11 and Thomas Gipson added 10.

The Wildcats (18-9, 8-6) lost their sixth consecutive road game and are 1-6 in away league games.

Kansas State dug a hole early it couldn’t climb out of, committing 10 first-half turnovers and shooting 39 percent with no starter scoring more than five points.

Oklahoma turned those turnovers into 17 points and controlled the tempo, outrebounding Kansas State 21-15 in the half and 32-28 for the game.

The Wildcats outscored Oklahoma 51-45 in the second half but it wasn’t enough in what has been a difficult season away from home.

The Wildcats have done some of their best work this season at home inside Bramlage Coliseum — winning their last 14 games, including beating No. 15 Texas and No. 7 Kansas.

Saturday’s game was a much different story than when the two teams met in Manhattan, Kan., on Jan. 14. Kansas State led 39-38 after the first half and came from behind in the final 5 minutes to win 72-66 with five different players scoring in double figures.

Saturday, the Wildcats didn’t have a player reach double-figure scoring until 7:51 remaining when Foster hit his second 3-pointer of the afternoon.

Both Oklahoma and Kansas State play two of their final three games at home.
