Western women let late lead slip away against Blue Tigers

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western women’s basketball team continued to struggle on the road losing a heart-breaker 56-55 against the Lincoln Blue Tigers. Two free throws by Lincoln’s Jennifer Rosado dropped the Griffons to 0-9 in MIAA road game this season. The Griffons fall to 9-14 overall and 4-12 in MIAA play.

In a slow first half the Griffons were able to claim a 21-20 halftime lead against the Blue Tigers. The Griffons started slow scoring just five points in the first 11:06 of the game trailing 9-5 at the under 10 media timeout. The finally got things going after the timeout outscoring the Blue Tigers 13-5 claiming an 18-14 lead at the next media timeout. The Blue Tigers outscored the Griffons the final 4:18 6-3 but the Griffons were able to hold on to the one point lead.

At the half the Griffons made just 24.1-percent (7-29) field goal attempts while the Blue Tigers attempted just 12 shots making four. Lincoln stayed in the game from the free throw line making 11-of-13 while the Griffons made 6-of-8. Both teams struggled to hold on to the ball as Lincoln turned the ball over 17 times to the Griffons 10.

Six different Griffons scored in the half with Quenisha Lockett and Tiffanie Abrams both scoring five points. Lanicia Lawrence played well on the defensive end getting four steals. The Blue Tigers were led by Jennifer Rosado with six points and three rebounds.

The second half continued to be a back and forth battle as the Griffons led by as many as five three different times including 51-46 with 3:03 to play after a Kyrsten Crawford layup. The next few minutes belonged to the Blue Tigers as they took their first lead of the second half at 54-53 when Quienssence Prince capitalized on an old fashioned three point play with 21 second to play.

The Griffons took a 30 second timeout and with three seconds left Abrams hit a layup. Unfortunately Abrams would foul Jennifer Rosado with one second remaining and Rosado hit both free throws giving them just their second MIAA victory. The Blue Tigers improve to 5-19 overall and 2-15 in MIAA play.

The Griffons were led by Abrams with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while hitting two long range shots. Lockett also finished in double figures with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Tigers were led by Rosado with 14 points. She scored 12 of her 14 points on the free throw line. Price dumped in 12 points while Kate Frazier and Angela Randall each had eight.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, February 22 with a home contest against rival Northwest Missouri State on Military Appreciation Day. Game time is set for 1:30 pm in the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Clarkson helps Missouri hold off Vanderbilt, 67-64

MUCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Jordan Clarkson scored 21 points, including all 11 free throw attempts, as Missouri held off Vanderbilt 67-64 on Wednesday.

Earnest Ross added 16 points for the Tigers (19-7, 7-6 SEC), who survived an off-game from top scorer Jabari Brown in a matchup of schools tied for fifth place in the conference. Brown, held to nine points on 3 for 11 shooting, averaged 23.9 points the previous 10 games including 22 the first meeting at Vanderbilt last month.

Damian Jones had 19 points and seven rebounds for Vanderbilt (14-11, 6-7). Down eight points with just over two minutes to go, the Commodores shaved the deficit to two on Kyle Moats’ 3-pointer with 19.4 seconds to go.

Kyle Fuller’s bid to force overtime on a shot that drew iron from beyond midcourt came after the buzzer. Fuller made just one of 12 shots and had four points, eight below his average.

Missouri helped make the finish exciting by going 6 for 12 at the free throw line the final 1:31.

Clarkson scored nine points in the final six minutes, including three baskets in a 13-2 run that put the Tigers up 61-53.

Vanderbilt led 21-20 at the half with both teams shooting 33 percent and enduring lengthy dry spells. Missouri went nearly seven minutes without a point and Vanderbilt was scoreless more than 4 1/2 minutes before Jones’s tip-in to end the half for the lead.

The first-half scoring total was a season-worst by five points for Missouri. Vanderbilt’s season low was 19 points its last time out against Texas A&M.

A half-dozen football players, including quarterback Maty Mauk, signed autographs the hour before the game. Fans also got a chance to pose for photos with the Cotton Bowl trophy and two of the school’s Golden Girls cheerleader team.

Northwest women fall in overtime to Lindenwood

Northwest2013riggertAfter a valiant effort to overcome a nine-point deficit with 5:49 left in the game, Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team failed to ride its momentum into overtime.

For the second straight game, the Bearcats lost in overtime. Lindenwood avenged a loss to Northwest a few weeks ago and won 79-74 in overtime at Bearcat Arena.

Northwest was playing without freshman starting center Shelby Mustain, who was out with the flu.

“We didn’t lose because we were without Shelby,” Northwest coach Michael Smith said. “We lost because Lindenwood gave more effort than we did.

“We settled too much for threes. We talked about it at halftime, and obviously, it went in one ear and out the other. We had kids who were trying to be superstars when they should not have been.

“We had some really bad mishaps at crucial times. The sad thing is that has been the story of our season.”

The loss dropped Northwest to 9-14 overall and 6-10 in the MIAA. Lindenwood improved to 13-11 and 8-9. Northwest and the Lions are fighting for a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

“There was a little pressure in this game and there should be,” Smith said. “I want players who can handle the tightness of a game. They knew Lindenwood was one game ahead of us.”

The Bearcats will try to bounce back Saturday at Missouri Western.

“There’s a lot riding on these games,” said Northwest junior Annie Mathews, who finished with 20 points and six rebounds. “Coach told us after the game we are under some pressure. We have to step up and handle it. Winning this game would have put us in better position.”

Both teams played with the tenacity that something important was at stake.

It appeared Lindenwood was in control when Jenny Rocha completed a three-point play that gave the Lions a 54-45 lead.

In less than 2 minutes, Northwest closed to 54-52 with 4:18 left. With 52 seconds left, Northwest took a 58-57 lead on a basket by Mathews.

Seven seconds later, Lindenwood went back in front by one. The Lions later added a free throw for a 60-58 lead.

But with 28 seconds left, Ashleigh Nelson tied the game for Northwest. The Bearcats played solid defense, preventing Lindenwood from getting a good shot off.

Northwest started overtime well. Tember Schechinger drove to the basket for a layup, giving the Bearcats a 62-60.

The Bearcats were then struck by the first of two three-point daggers by Morgan Johnson. Johnson, who was 1 for 8 from three-point range in regulation, found her shot in overtime.

Her first three-pointer in overtime gave Lindenwood a 63-62 lead and her second one put the Lions ahead 68-64.

“Overtime is another quarter,” said Northwest guard Ariel Easton. “You have different players step up and do good things.”

It was a tough loss for the Bearcats. A big reason Northwest managed to force overtime was because it turned the ball over just six times and forced 21 turnovers.

“I personally feel it comes down to effort,” said Ariel Easton. “One lapse on the court and that is the difference right there. We had some possessions where we steal the ball and then when we come back down, we have to have the same intensity.”

Mathews and Easton agreed that the Bearcats did not consistently play good defense. Lindenwood shot a blistering 57 percent from the field.

“Our defense just wasn’t there tonight,” Mathews said. “We should not have given up that many points.

“We have played really good defense the past couple of games. That has what has helped us get the results we have been getting. We didn’t execute our defense well tonight.”

After a great start, Northwest sputtered in the latter portion of the first half and went into halftime down 26-25.

The Bearcats scored the first seven points and quickly built a 10-2 lead on a three-pointer by Ariel Easton. It was the second three-pointer by the Bearcats in the opening minutes.

“We came out strong, but knowing we beat them before, we can’t be content with that,” Mathews said. “That could have been the case tonight.”

Northwest got a bit too enamored with the long-range bombs. The Bearcats kept firing, but the balls stopped dropping through the nets.

By midway through the first half, Northwest held a slim 12-11 lead. The Bearcats managed to stay ahead or tie until late in the first half when Jenny Rocha scored two of her eight, first-half points. Her third basket in a 2-minute stretch put the Lions ahead 21-20.

Lindenwood increased its lead to 24-20 before Northwest finished the half, scoring five of the last seven points.

Northwest made just four of 15 from three-point range.

On the bright side, Northwest committed only three turnovers while forcing 12. It allowed the Bearcats to take 10 more shots in the first half.

Northwest will head to Missouri Western for a 1:30 p.m. game on Saturday against the Griffons. The first 100 Northwest students who show their Bearcat card at the Missouri Western ticket office will receive FREE admission to the game. Students arriving after the 100 tickets are given out can purchase tickets for $5 each.

Kansas State uses big second half to defeat TCU

KSUMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Thomas Gipson had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Marcus Foster added 13 points and Kansas State used a big second-half run to put away TCU 65-53 on Wednesday night.

Nino Williams added 11 points and Will Spradling had 10 for the Wildcats (18-8, 8-5 Big 12), who bounced back from a double-overtime loss at Baylor over the weekend to match a school record with their 14th consecutive win at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Horned Frogs (9-16, 0-13) actually pulled even with Kansas State midway through the second half, but the Wildcats answered with a 15-2 run to seize control. Most of the damage came in the paint, where Gipson and D.J. Johnson were able to use their size to their advantage.

Kyan Anderson led TCU with 23 points, his fourth straight game of at least 20. Karviar Shepherd added 12 points, but otherwise the junior guard got precious little help.

The Horned Frogs fell to 2-29 in conference play since joining the Big 12.

Early on, it looked as though things were headed for a rout. Kansas State hit six of its first eight shots while the Horned Frogs made just two of their first nine, and the result was a 13-4 lead that had a sparse crowd settling in for a comfy evening.

Back-to-back turnovers left them feeling restless again.

The Wildcats wound up turning it over 13 times in the first half — balls were passed into the first row of seats, dribbled off feet, deflected off noggins. The cacophony of mistakes, combined with mounting foul trouble, prevented Kansas State from ever stretching the lead.

Meanwhile, Anderson was slashing to the rim just about every time down floor, either getting a layup or getting to the foul line. He had 17 points at the break, including a basket with just five seconds remaining that sent the Horned Frogs to the locker room down by a point.

The game remained close in the early stages of the second half, neither team able to get into any sort of offensive rhythm. Part of that was fouls but part of it was sloppy play.

It wasn’t until Spradling drained a 3-pointer with 12 minutes left to break a 42-all tie that Kansas State finally had some life again. Williams followed up with a basket, Johnson got to the foul line and the Wildcats were off on their game-changing run.

At one point, TCU coach Trent Johnson called timeout and spent the majority of it arguing with referee Tom Eades. When the game resumed, Williams kept the momentum going for Kansas State, and by the time Gipson made a couple of free throws the lead had grown to 57-44.

The Wildcats coaxed the last few minutes off the clock to give coach Bruce Weber his 45th win since taking over the program. That moves Weber into a tie with current Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger for the most victories by any coach in his first two years at Kansas State.

Wiggins’ layup lifts No. 8 Kansas past Texas Tech

KULUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self felt more than a little fortunate that his No. 8 Jayhawks pulled out a 64-63 win against a very tough Texas Tech team.

Andrew Wiggins’ layup with 2 seconds left lifted Kansas to victory on Tuesday night.

“I think sometimes you could say they were a little lucky,” he said of the Red Raiders. “They threw some in at the end of the shot clock that maybe weren’t the highest percentage shots, and we were a little lucky that the ball just happened to bounce to Wigs there at the end. That’s part of it.

“We’ve been unlucky and we’ve been lucky before, and they usually balance out over time.”

The freshman finished with 19 points, and Joel Embiid matched his career high with 18 to lead the Jayhawks (20-6, 11-2). Kansas reached 20 wins for the 25th consecutive season, and 11 conference victories for the 20th straight year.

Texas Tech’s Robert Turner sank two free throws with 16 seconds left to put the Red Raiders up 63-62, but Kansas brought the ball up and got it inside to Wiggins for the win.

Jordan Tolbert scored 16 points and Dejan Kravic added 13 to lead Texas Tech (13-13, 5-8).

The Jayhawks own a two-game lead in the Big 12 after Texas fell 85-76 at Iowa State on Tuesday night.

“It’s big, it’s big, but it doesn’t mean anything unless we win Saturday,” Self said of Kansas’ home game against the Longhorns. “That’s the game that would give us some serious breathing room, although we’ve got a little bit now, and it was big tonight.

“I wasn’t banking on them losing, all I wanted to do was win two games this week, and if we were able to do that then it would be a great week.”

The score was tied nine times and the lead changed 13 times.

“I was impressed with Tubby (Smith’s) team and how hard they played and how well they defended, how well they rebounded,” Self said. “They’re going to get better. The guy knows how to win. He’s a proven winner. Those kids played hard.”

Kansas held an early 10-point lead but Texas Tech started hammering the ball inside to make the game tight.

“There wasn’t much to say,” Smith said of his team. “They’re down, they’re despondent because it’s a tough loss. They felt like they played well enough to get the win, but you’ve always have to finish the game the right way.”

Tolbert made a bucket as the shot clock expired with 2:51 left to put the Red Raiders up 59-55. But Wayne Seldon, Jr. hit a clutch 3-pointer to pull within 59-58. Turner answered with a basket, and Embiid sank two free throws to make it 61-60 with 1:22 remaining.

On the Red Raiders’ next possession, a scrum led to Kansas getting the ball. Embiid dunked it to put the Jayhawks up 62-61.

Turner then made his free throws, and Kansas called a timeout to draw up the play to Wiggins.

Kansas scored 22 points from the free throw line, and Texas Tech netted only nine.

Texas Tech came out after halftime and hit four of its first five shots. Kansas made only one basket in four attempts, allowing the Red Raiders to take their first lead since early in the game, 37-32.

Jordan Tolbert capped Texas Tech’s 8-2 run.

But the Red Raiders’ effective defense also created foul trouble. With more than 13 minutes remaining, Jaye Crockett, Kravic and Kader Tapsoba each had three fouls.

Texas Tech sent the Jayhawks to the line often in the second half. Five free throws — by Jamari Traylor and Wiggins — on three possessions pulled Kansas within 46-45 with about 11 minutes remaining. But the Jayhawks regained the lead for the first time in 11 minutes, 52-51, on a pair of free throws by Naadir Tharpe with 7:14 remaining.

But with Kravic back in, and after a turnover by Tharpe, the 7-foot senior tied the game at 53 on a layup with 5:34 left.
