Northwest Missouri State football signs 28 to Class of 2014

Northwest2013riggertNorthwest Missouri State head football coach Adam Dorrel announced the addition of 28 student-athletes to the 2014 Bearcat football roster on Wednesday.

Twenty eight individuals signed National Letters of Intent and two have accepted letters of admission to Northwest. The list includes 13 players from the state of Missouri, four from Nebraska, four from Florida, three from Illinois and two from Iowa.

“The strength of this year’s recruiting class is that it truly compliments our current roster,” Dorrel said. “Everyone we have signed today has bought into the fact that they will all play a major role in our future success. I’m very excited to have this group of student-athletes join our family this fall.”

The Bearcats won the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship, the fourth title in program history (1998, 1999, 2009). Dorrel, who completed his third season at the helm, was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year.

“A lot of thanks has to go to our coaching staff,” Dorrel explained. “I’ve charged them with the task of not only finding good football players but good all around individuals. It takes a tremendous amount of time to put together a recruiting class but we really compound that by asking our staff to really dial it up another level.”

The 2013 Bearcat football team not only found success on the field but also in the classroom. Eleven student-athletes hit a perfect 4.0 GPA and 78 members of the team had 3.0 GPAs or higher. The overall GPA of the team was a 2.91. This year’s recruiting class averaged a 21 on the ACT, had a combined GPA of 3.0 and 21 members of the class qualified for academic scholarships.

“We make no secret that our expectations for academics are extremely high for our players,” said Dorrel. “That is a big area that we focus on during recruiting. When we find a student-athlete that commits to academics, we have the resources here on campus to really help them succeed.

“One of our biggest advantages is the Talent Development Center (TDC) on campus. Dr. Alisha Francis, Ashley Pregeant and Kirk Skoglund and their staff deserve a lot of credit for the work they do not only with our student-athletes but for the entire campus. Our success rates speak for themselves. When we explain how we are going to help our student-athletes reach their academic goals and can walk them through case by case of how we are able to do that, it makes our jobs a lot easier.”

Dorrel pointed out the help that the football staff receives from the admissions office at Northwest every year cannot be understated.

“Sometimes for incoming students, especially student-athletes, making sure that everything is in order to attend college can be overwhelming,” Dorrel said. “Tamera Grow and the rest of the staff in admissions do such a great job in making sure all information is in a clear, easy to understand format so when parents have questions, we have answers right away.”

Dorrel also wanted to emphasize the importance of the support staff in athletics for not just the football team but for all the Northwest student-athletes.

“Having our compliance director Lori Hopkins available to us during the recruiting process is a great help,” Dorrel explained. “With Kelly Quinlin being able to explain our medical personnel and how we will take care of our student athletes along with Joe Quinlin walking them through our strength and conditioning programs, that combination really helps set us apart.”

The Bearcats will release details on spring practice and the 2014 Spring Game at a later date.

Mizzou falls on the road at No. 3 Florida, 68-58

MUGAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Michael Frazier II scored 14 points, highly touted freshman Chris Walker had two crowd-pleasing dunks in his debut and No. 3 Florida beat Missouri 68-58 on Tuesday night.

The Gators won their 14th consecutive game and extended a school record with their 28th straight victory at home.

Frazier came up huge in the latest one. The sophomore drained three 3-pointers in a 2-minute span in the second half, giving Florida some breathing room in a tight, back-and-forth game.

Patric Young’s driving layup with 4:10 remaining gave the Gators (20-2, 9-0 Southeastern Conference) a 58-48 lead.

Missouri’s 3-point shooting kept the Tigers (16-6, 4-5) in it for much of the game.

Missouri made 8 of 21 from behind the arc, but just 4 of 13 in the second half. The Tigers went more than 4 minutes without a point, a stretch that helped Florida build its biggest lead.

Jabari Brown led the Tigers with 15 points while Jordan Clarkson added 14.

Scottie Wilbekin finished with a career-high 19 points for the Gators. He was 13 of 16 from the free throw line, most of them down the stretch. Young chipped in 13 points and six rebounds.

Florida coach Billy Donovan notched his 16th consecutive 20-win season. Only Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski have longer active streaks.

Donovan’s current team has some issues – shaky free throw shooting and few long-range threats outside Frazier – but the addition of Walker could increase Florida’s chances of making another deep run in the NCAA tournament.

A forward from Bonifay in Florida’s panhandle, Walker sat out 12 games, or 40 percent of the season, because the NCAA determined he ”received preferential treatment from five people, including two agents.” The NCAA said Walker and people close to him accepted free cellphones and service, airfare, lodging, meals and apparel while he was a prospect.

He was ordered to donate the $270 received from the agents to a charity of his choice and serve 80 hours of community service.

Walker, who failed to qualify academically and spent the fall taking online classes to gain eligibility, joined the team Dec. 14 and has been practicing since. His debut had been much-anticipated.

Walker, who drew ooh’s and aah’s with every move during pregame warm-ups, entered the game to a standing ovation with 11:28 remaining in the first half. His first few minutes on the court gave Florida fans even more to celebrate.

Walker blocked two shots and pulled down a rebound in just 3 minutes. There was some obvious confusion, especially on the defensive end, but he showed surprising poise considering all the hype, the wait, the atmosphere and the opponent.

He was even better in his second stint.

Walker had two thunderous dunks in the final 2:07 of the half, finishing alley-oops from fellow freshman Kasey Hill. The second one had the O’Connell Center rocking – but just briefly.

Brown hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer a few seconds later, giving Missouri a 28-25 lead.

No. 8 Kansas bounces back with 69-52 win at Baylor

KUWACO, Texas (AP) — Naadir Tharpe scored 22 points, nine in a go-ahead run for No. 8 Kansas before halftime, and the Big 12-leading Jayhawks rebounded from their first league loss with a 69-52 victory at Baylor on Tuesday night.

Andrew Wiggins overcame a slow start to score 14 points, while Perry Ellis had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Kansas.

Wiggins, the Big 12’s top scoring freshman, finished 4-of-13 shooting and didn’t make his first basket until a half-court shot to beat the buzzer going into halftime. That capped a 14-3 run over the final 5 minutes for a 35-27 lead.

Early on, there were three ties and nine lead changes. Tharpe’s short jumper with 3 1/2 minutes left in the half broke a 25-all tie and put the Jayhawks (17-5, 8-1 Big 12) ahead to stay.

Cory Jefferson had 14 points to lead Baylor (14-8, 2-7), which lost its fourth consecutive game at the Ferrell Center after a 13-game home winning streak. It’s the longest home drought since dropping six straight in 2005.

The Bears, coming off a win at then-No. 8 Oklahoma State that snapped their five-game losing streak, was trying to set up for a final shot before halftime when Kenny Chery threw an errant pass. Wiggins ended up with the ball, took a few steps and threw took a shot from near midcourt that went through the hoop.

Baylor has never won consecutive games over Top 25 opponents.

The tiebreaking shot was Tharpe’s third basket in the half-closing spurt, and he added a 3-pointer with a minute left. He then made a long 3-pointer on Kansas’ opening possession of the second half.

Kansas was coming off an 81-69 loss Saturday at surging Texas.

In their regular season finale last March, the Jayhawks lost 81-58 at Baylor. They still had a share of their ninth consecutive Big 12 title, but that loss kept them from winning it outright.

Baylor was within 49-44 midway through the second half and Wiggins had just shot and missed the rim.

But the Bears missed three free throws on the same possession. Then, with Baylor students chanting ”Air Ball!, Air Ball!”, Wiggins swished a 3-pointer from the right wing. Wiggins scored again on the next possession to push the lead to 54-44.

Brady Heslip had 12 points on four 3-pointers, but didn’t score again after his last gave Baylor a 22-21 lead with 6:34 left in the first half.

Baylor got off to a fast start, with Gary Franklin’s alley-oop pass to Jefferson for a dunk on the game’s opening possession. It was 5-0 before Kansas took a shot when Heslip made his first 3-pointer.

After the lead changed on four consecutive possessions, Baylor was up 11-8 after another Franklin-to-Jefferson alley-oop 5 1/2 minutes into the game.
