Kansas falls at Texas for fifth straight loss

KUAUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Malcolm Brown ran for 119 yards and four touchdowns and defensive tackle Chris Whaley scored his second touchdown of the season as Texas beat Kansas 35-13 Saturday for the Longhorns’ fifth win in a row.

Brown scored twice in the second quarter, and Whaley’s 40-yard fumble return in the third quarter broke open what had been a surprisingly close game. Whaley, who was initially recruited as a running back, also scored on a 31-yard interception return against Oklahoma.

Brown’s touchdown runs covered 2, 3, 1 and 30 yards for Texas (6-2, 5-0), which remains in a tie for first place in the Big 12. Case McCoy passed for 196 yards with two interceptions in Texas’ first home game since Sept. 21. The Longhorns held Kansas to 306 total yards.

Kansas dropped its 26th consecutive game in the Big 12. Jake Heaps passed for 160 yards for the Jayhawks (2-6, 0-5).

Texas lacked the early spark it had in its previous two games in dominant wins over Oklahoma and TCU. McCoy threw his third interception in two games on Texas’ first drive, and the Longhorns were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time since the season-opener.

Since the first half against Oklahoma back on Oct. 12, McCoy, who took over the starting job for injured David Ash, has five interceptions against two touchdown passes.

But Kansas had the sort of misfires that come with a losing streak. The Jayhawks had three drives inside the Texas 15 that accounted for just six points, and the fumble that set up Texas’ touchdown return came just when the Jayhawks had a chance to seize momentum in the third quarter.

After snagging the early interception, the Jayhawks missed a chance for a surprise lead in the first when Matthew Wyman missed a 31-yard field goal. A penalty for running into the punter also let Texas keep the ball in what would end up as a 92-yard scoring drive when Brown scored his first touchdown 12 plays later.

Brown’s second touchdown put Texas ahead 14-0 before a long pass from Heaps to Rodriguez Coleman set up Ron Doughty’s 21-yard field on the last play of the first half.

Kansas started the third quarter with a drive that stalled at the Texas 10. Doughty cut the Longhorns lead to 14-6 with a 27-yard field goal that bounced in off the right upright.

The Jayhawks had quieted the home crowd until Whaley’s fumble return. Heaps, who had started for BYU against Texas in 2011, was flushed out of the pocket and hit hard by Cedric Reed. The ball bounced once and popped up nearly waist high for Whaley to snag it and run untouched to the end zone.

Brown closed the third with his third touchdown of the day for a 28-6 lead. His fourth came a few minutes later when McCoy stumbled and barely made the handoff before his knee hit the ground.

Northwest volleyball takes down Missouri Southern in three sets

NWMSUAs the volleyball matches become fewer, Northwest Missouri State volleyball team understands it needs to be near perfect to make a run for a spot in the MIAA Tournament.

Northwest played with that kind of urgency Saturday night at Bearcat Arena.Following up on Friday’s victory, the Bearcats won their second straight match in impressive fashion, beating Missouri Southern 25-18, 25-16, 25-19.

“It was huge because we kind of went through a dry spell with losing,” said sophomore hitter Shelby Duren, who finished with a team-high eight kills. “It makes your confidence go so much higher. It gets you ready to go out and finish the season strong.”

The Lions entered Saturday’s match searching for their first MIAA win. Northwest was not going take this team lightly. Southern beat the Bearcats in four sets in a nonconference match in Joplin, Mo., on Sept. 21.

Southern believed it could pull off the win. The Bearcats dashed those hopes in the latter stages of the first set and then never let up.

Clinging to a slim 19-18 lead, Northwest was at a spot in the first set that posed danger. A couple of errors by the Bearcats and they were looking at letting the first set slip away.

Instead, a kill by Abby Graves put the momentum entirely on the Bearcat side. Graves added another kill and that led the way to Mackie Keller serving out the first set.

“It is hard to play two nights in a row at a high level,” Northwest coach Amy Woerth said. “Last night was probably the best we have played in a long time. So I knew tonight would probably be more of a challenge to get into that mode again.”

Southern actually had five more kills, but errors doomed the Lions in the first set. They had seven errors on kill attempts and another three service errors.

The Bearcats played a much cleaner first set, recording only four errors and no service errors.

Northwest was more impressive in the second set, taking a 9-7 lead and extending it to 18-11. Brooke Bartosh was the big hitter in the second set, recording three kills.

“We have a lot of capable people who can put the ball away,” Woerth said. “A diverse offense is a good thing.”

Seven players had at least one kill for Northwest in the second set. In contrast, Southern only had three players record kills in the second set.

“It feels good because volleyball is a team effort so not one person can carry the team so when it is spread out, it feels more like an accomplishment,” Duren said.

Northwest was never threatened in the second set as it built a commanding a24-13 lead.

The Bearcats came out strong again in the third set. They quickly took a 7-3 lead and slowly built it to 20-12.

“They are starting to understand when they need to push,” Woerth said. “Understanding when they need to push and actually getting it done are two different things.

“They are getting more mature and they are actually doing it. It is nice to see when the pressure is on, that we are able to push and put the pressure on them.”

Southern made a run late in the third set and closed to 21-17, forcing a timeout by Northwest. The Lions scored the next point to make it 21-18. The run ended on a thunderous kill by Duren.

A Keller kill ended the match.

“It is a great feeling,” said Keller, who finished with seven kills. “All the points before that matter, but it is awesome.”

It was an all around solid match for the Bearcats. Junior Bailey Vance finished with 18 digs. Junior Kirsten Hudgens and Senior Bridget Hanafin did a great job setting up the hitters, getting 15 and 14 assists respectively.

“Finish strong is our goal,” Keller said. “That’s what we tried to go with.”

Nebraska defeats Northwestern on hail mary

NULINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Jordan Westerkamp caught Ron Kellogg III’s tipped desperation heave to the end zone with no time left Saturday, giving Nebraska a 27-24 victory over Northwestern on Saturday.

The Cornhuskers looked like they were finished after Northwestern took a three-point lead with 1:20 left. They started their final drive at their 17 with no timeouts.

Ameer Abdullah caught a short pass and stretched to convert a fourth-and-15. Then, with four seconds on the clock, Kellogg dropped back for a final play. The strong-armed Kellogg let fly a ball that was deflected into Westerkamp’s hands in the end zone. Westerkamp held on, bringing the entire Nebraska bench running onto the field in celebration. The play was confirmed on video review.

Jeff Budzien had kicked a 21-yard, tie-breaking field goal with 1:20 left after defensive lineman Tyler Scott’s interception set up Northwestern inside the Nebraska 10.

Nebraska’s winning play was perhaps its most dramatic since Matt Davison’s ”Miracle at Missouri” catch that kept alive the Huskers’ national-championship season in 1997.

Kellogg, who came into the season as the third-string quarterback, was backing up Tommy Armstrong Jr. in the absence of the injured starter Taylor Martinez.

The Huskers’ previous series ended with Armstrong, trying to hit Quincy Enunwa, instead firing a pass right into the hands of Scott.

Kain Colter had run 6 yards to the Nebraska 1, but the Wildcats’ struggling offense couldn’t get into the end zone and had to call on Budzien for the short field goal.

Coach Bo Pelini has said that if the Huskers ever needed to drive the field in the final 2 minutes, Kellogg would be the guy he called on.

Kellogg, a walk-on who wasn’t put on scholarship until August, came through in a big way for a Nebraska team whose season was teetering after last week’s loss at Minnesota. The Huskers avoided back-to-back conference losses for the first time since 2009.

The Huskers (6-2, 3-1 Big Ten) continue to control their own destiny in the Big Ten Legends Division. The Wildcats (4-5, 0-5) lost their fifth straight.

Abdullah ran 24 times for 127 yards, but his biggest play came when the Huskers were trying to keep their last drive alive. Kellogg was in trouble on fourth-and-15 when he dumped the ball to Abdullah, who fought his way to the first-down marker and even got an extra yard.

Armstrong was 15 of 29 for 173 yards and a touchdown, but he threw three interceptions.

Kellogg was 7 of 13 for 104 yards, with one interception and the winning touchdown.

Treyvon Green ran for 149 yards and a career-high three touchdowns for the Wildcats, who have lost five straight and were playing without injured running backs Venric Mark, Mike Trumpy and Stephen Buckley. Buckley injured his left knee in the first quarter and didn’t return.

Nebraska defensive end Avery Moss tied it 21-all in the middle of the third quarter, picking off Trevor Siemian and running 25 yards for a touchdown.

In 11 possessions after it went up 21-7, Northwestern punted 10 times and was intercepted.

Poldberg, a resident of nearby Carter Lake, Iowa, completed his sixth season at Northwest Arkansas in 2013.  The only manager in Naturals history, Poldberg led the club to a Texas League championship in 2010 and earned the Dick Howser Award in the same season. He spent the 2004-07 seasons serving on the Royals’ Major League staff as the bullpen coach (2004-05), first base coach (2006) and third base coach (2007).   Joining Poldberg in Omaha will be pitching coach Larry Carter, hitting coach Tommy Gregg, athletic trainer David Iannicca and strength coach David Kathmann.

Wilson, who makes his home in Springdale, Ark., the home of the Naturals, just completed his second season as the manager at Wilmington and third in the Royals’ organization, after debuting as the manager with Kane County (A) in 2011.  His staff at Northwest Arkansas will consist of pitching coach Jim Brower, hitting coach Andre David, athletic trainer Masa Koyanagi and strength coach Austin Driggers.

Kennedy returns to Wilmington after four seasons as the manager at Surprise.  He also served as skipper of the Blue Rocks in 2008 as well as managing at Burlington (2007) and Idaho Falls (2009) within the organization as well as at Frisco (2005-06), the double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.  His staff includes pitching coach Steve Luebber, hitting coach Jose Castro, bench coach Justin Gemoll, athletic trainer James Stone and strength coach Joe Greany.

The Royals announced that their 2014 Rookie League affiliates will be Idaho Falls in the Pioneer League and Burlington in the Appalachian League.  KC will not field a minor league team in Surprise, Ariz., during the 2014 season.

Royals exercise option on James Shields

RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals exercised their $13.5 million option on right-hander James Shields on Thursday after he anchored one of the league’s best starting rotations last season.

Shields, acquired last offseason in a trade from Tampa Bay, went 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA and an AL-leading 228 2-3 innings. Shields was especially strong after the All-Star break, going 9-3 with a 3.06 ERA to help the Royals get into playoff contention.

Kansas City went 43-27 after the break to finish 86-76, its best record since 1989.

“The second half, we pretty much figured it out – figured out how to win and what it takes on a daily basis,” Shields said. “I think going into next spring training, we all have that good frame of mind, that good attitude, and hopefully we’ll have a good season next year.”

The decision Thursday to exercise Shields’ option was mostly a formality. The Royals sent top prospect Wil Myers and a package of other minor leagues to the Rays to acquire him, and they weren’t about to let him go after just one season in their rotation.

Especially the way he pitched this season, giving the Royals the kind of bona fide ace that they haven’t had since Zack Greinke was plying his trade a few years ago.

“I feel good about it. I feel like I pitched well for them last year,” Shields said. “I’m just excited to be back and be a Royal and have a good season next year.”

Shields, who earlier Thursday won the Joe Burke Special Achievement Awarded presented by the Kansas City chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, said he hasn’t discussed a new contract with Royals general manager Dayton Moore.

He did say he was open to remaining in Kansas City beyond next season.

“When that times comes, I’ll definitely be focused on it,” Shields said. “The one thing I do know is I love the city. The organization is great. I’ve been here for one year and we’ve made tremendous strides. Their willingness to want to win is what intrigues me.”

In the meantime, Shields just might become the Royals’ best recruiter.

Ervin Santana and Bruce Chen, who both pitched well this past season, became free agents on Thursday, and Shields said that he will stay in touch with them through text messages.

Santana in particular figures to be among the most coveted starters on the free-agent market after going 9-10 with a career-best 3.24 ERA. He threw 211 innings this season.

“You have to understand the business of the game,” Shields said, “but we would love to have them back. Bruce brings veteran leadership, Magic brings veteran leadership, and both of those guys had phenomenal years. Magic was lights-out. We counted on him every five days.”

The Royals are also in need of help in right field and at second base, so they might be reluctant to give Santana the kind of money that he’ll demand on the open market.

They also have several promising arms in the minor leagues, including flamethrower Yordano Ventura and youngster Kyle Zimmer, who expect to compete for a rotation spot in spring training.

“It’s been amazing, just the transformation, how this organization has been working the last four or five years,” Shields said. “Just to see all the guys that went through the system and how they did this year, and the year we had, was truly amazing.”
