Kansas State lets 4th quarter lead slip away against No. 15 Baylor

KSUMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Baylor coach Art Briles knew that his team would be tested at some point his season. Things had been too easy for the No. 15 Bears during four lopsided home wins.

In fact, he figured the step up in class would start Saturday at Kansas State.

He was right, and his team answered the call.

Bryce Petty threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns, Ahmad Dixon made a critical interception late in the fourth quarter and the Bears held on for a 35-25 victory over the slumping Wildcats.

”We knew the way this season had gone, it wasn’t going to continue like that,” said Briles, whose had been averaging more than 700 yards and 70 points per game. ”Everything had been in our favor, four games at home, catching everyone at a good time. We knew it would change.”

What didn’t change was the outcome.

Tevin Reese had five catches for 184 yards and two scores, and Antwan Goodley had five catches for 139 yards and another touchdown as the Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) won their ninth straight game dating to their upset victory over Kansas State last season.

”It was a huge team win all-around,” said Petty, whose three TD passes all went for more than 50 yards. ”The defense stepped up huge. I thought they had a great game.”

Daniel Sams ran for 199 yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats, who led 25-21 midway through the third quarter. But they twice failed on 2-point conversion attempts, missed a tying field-goal try in the fourth quarter, and then Sams was picked off by Dixon to seal the outcome.

The defending Big 12 champion, Kansas State (2-4) is 0-3 in the Big 12 for the first time since 2004, shortly before coach Bill Snyder stepped away for a brief retirement.

”It better matter to them. It better matter to everybody if it involves the program,” he said. ”I hate to think that you lose four ball games through the early segments of your season and be a 2-4 football team and not have it matter. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I think it does matter to our players and they don’t want to be there. They want to do something about it.”

The Bears had scored at least 28 points in the first quarter of each of their games this season, so it was a mild victory for Kansas State that they only led 7-0 on Saturday.

Kansas State answered early in the second quarter when Sams carried eight consecutive times on a 78-yard TD drive, but Baylor’s score-a-minute offense eventually got on track.

Reese ran right past defensive back Randall Evans for a 93-yard touchdown reception, the second-longest scoring pass in the Bears’ 115-year history. Then after Jack Cantele hit a 24-yard field goal for Kansas State, Goodley hauled in a 72-yard pass from Petty to make it 21-10 at halftime.

So accustomed to games being over by then, perhaps the Bears forgot they needed to keep playing.

The Wildcats scored 15 unanswered points in the third quarter, beginning with Cantele’s 32-yard field goal. Weston Hiebert blocked a punt moments later to give Kansas State the ball back, and Sams – who briefly went to the locker room with a shoulder injury – returned for a 2-yard TD run.

The Wildcats got the ball back again when Petty was stripped by Ryan Mueller near the Baylor sideline, and Kansas State punched it into the end zone for its first lead of the game.

But facing adversity for the first time this season, Baylor responded with aplomb. Petty hit Reese on a 54-yard scoring strike that gave the Bears a 28-25 lead with 14:33 left.

”He just got off a great press, he got a good release and just took off,” Petty said. ”It was just about not overthrowing him and ac ting like we were in the indoor.”

The Wildcats had chances down the stretch, only to fritter them away.

Cantele pulled a 41-yard field goal wide left that would have tied the game with 6:49 left in the game. After the Kansas State defense held, Sams was picked off by Dixon with 3:48 remaining when the sophomore quarterback appeared to be throwing the ball away.

Glasco Martin added a 21-yard touchdown run with 1:16 to go that put the game away.

”We moved the ball at times but we kind of shot ourselves in the foot at times, too,” said the Wildcats’ Jake Waters, who shared time with Sams at quarterback. ”For the most part I thought we played good enough to win the game. We’ve just got to make those plays to get the W.”

Kansas falls at TCU, 27-17

KUFORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Trevone Boykin ran for a touchdown and threw for another as TCU overcame turnovers and Kansas 27-17 Saturday.

The Horned Frogs (3-3, 1-2 Big 12) lost three fumbles and Boykin was intercepted twice. Both interceptions and Brandon Carter’s muffed punt led to all of Kansas’ scores.

TCU broke a 10-10 halftime tie on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. Boykin hit David Porter with a short pass. As he ran between two defenders, the Jayhawks ran into each other and Porter was free for a 75-yard touchdown.

The Frogs stretched their lead to 24-10 with 53-yard drive to B.J. Catalon’s 2-yard touchdown run with 9:31 remaining in the third quarter.

Barely 2 minutes later, Jake Heaps threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jimmay Mundine following the muffed punt.

The Jayhawks (2-3, 0-2) had taken a 3-0 lead on Matthew Wyman’s 37-yard field goal 5 minutes into the game. Isaiah Johnson had set up the Jayhawks at TCU’s 25 yard line by intercepting Boykin’s pass that bounced off running back Waymon James’ hands.

Boykin then finished a 63-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to give the Horned Frogs a 7-3 lead with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter. He also made a 25-yard gain while guiding TCU over 42 yards to Jaden Oberkrom’s 44-yard field goal and a 10-3 second-quarter lead.

An exchange of turnovers benefited Kansas. The Jayhawks tied the game on JaCorey Shepherd’s 24-yard interception-return touchdown. It came only three plays after the Frogs’ Jason Verrett stopped Kansas’ deepest first-half penetration by picking off Heaps’ pass at the TCU 10.

Heaps had put the Jayhawks deep in TCU territory on a 50-yard completion to Andrew Turzilli, who battled Verrett for the ball in the air.

TCU turned the ball over again on the first play after Shepherd’s touchdown. James fumbled at the end of a 9-yard gain, with Shepherd forcing the fumble and Victor Simmons recovering the ball at the 34. A third-down sack pushed the Jayhawks out of field goal range, so they punted.

Boykin finished the game 14 for 22 for 173 passing yards, and with 12 carries for 71 yards. Porter had the Frogs’ first 100-yard receiving game (4 for 118) since last season’s game against Oklahoma. Catalon ran for a season-high 91 yards in 12 attempts.

TCU’s defense held Kansas to 198 yards for the game.

The final score came on a fourth-quarter drive to Oberkrom’s second field goal, a 37-yarder.

Nebraska dominates at Purdue, 44-7

NUWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Ameer Abdullah ran for 126 yards and a touchdown to help Nebraska defeat Purdue 44-7 on Saturday.

Terrell Newby ran for 61 yards and Imani Cross added 56 yards and two touchdowns for the Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten).

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez sat out with a turf toe injury. Tommy Armstrong Jr. started and completed just 6 of 18 passes for 43 yards with three interceptions. Ron Kellogg III stepped in and completed 10 of 13 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.

Nebraska held Purdue to 216 yards, and the Boilermakers didn’t score until the final minute of the game. Purdue ran for just 32 yards on 25 carries.

Danny Etling completed 14 of 35 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. DeAngelo Yancey caught five passes for 146 yards and a touchdown for the Boilermakers (1-5, 0-2).

Nebraska scored on its first drive as Armstrong’s 3-yard touchdown run put Nebraska ahead 7-0. The Huskers ran for 48 yards on the drive.

Halfway through the first quarter, LeRoy Alexander intercepted a pass by Etling and the Huskers took over on the Purdue 26. On Nebraska’s next play, however, Armstrong lobbed an interception to Purdue’s Frankie Williams in the end zone.

Kellogg replaced Armstrong at quarterback the following series and converted two third-and-long passes before Cross scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, extending Nebraska’s lead to 14-0.

Purdue was outgained 117-14 and held without a first down in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Nebraska cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste was ejected for targeting after leading with his helmet while making a play against Dalyn Dawkins. On the next play Randy Gregory recovered a Dawkins fumble, setting up a 28-yard touchdown run by Abdullah.

Trailing 21-0, Purdue went for it on fourth-and-3 from its 46 on its first possession of the third quarter, but Rob Henry’s pass on a reverse was short.

Nebraska responded with another scoring drive on which Abdullah moved the chains with a tough run on fourth-and-1 and, later, Cross scored from 2 yards out..

Gregory sacked Etling in the end zone, one of five sacks by the Cornhuskers, to increase Nebraska’s lead to 30-0.

Etling found Yancey for a 55-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds remaining to finally get Purdue on the board.

Wacha, Cardinals blank Dodgers for 2-0 NLCS lead

CardsMatched against ace Clayton Kershaw, the only thing Michael Wacha lacked was a no-hit watch.

“He’s becoming a guy a lot of teams wish they drafted,” teammate David Freese said. “What he’s done is remarkable, especially on this stage.”

Wacha stared down a bases-loaded test in the sixth inning and pitched into the seventh, and the kids in the bullpen also were impervious to October pressure, keeping the Los Angeles Dodgers bats silent for the second straight day and winning 1-0 Saturday for a 2-0 lead in the NL Championship Series.

“I’m kind of at a loss for words to describe him,” said fellow rookie Kevin Siegrist, who got a big out to end the seventh. “It’s kind of ridiculous how well he’s done so far.”

The Cardinals managed only two hits off Kershaw and the Dodgers, but Jon Jay’s sacrifice fly set up by Freese’s double and A.J. Ellis’ passed ball in the fifth stood up.

The Dodgers’ scoreless streak in the NLCS reached 19 innings after they averaged 6½ runs in a four-game division series against Atlanta. Rookie fireballer Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth with a heater reaching 101 mph, fanning pinch-hitter Andre Ethier on three pitches to end it.

A day after outlasting Los Angeles 3-2 in 13 innings, the Cardinals moved two wins away from the World Series.

Game 3 is Monday at Dodger Stadium, with Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright facing rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu. The Dodgers have already used their top two starters and have nothing to show for it.

“We don’t get too far ahead of ourselves,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “We don’t deny also what’s happened here the last two days.

“Those were two very good wins, two very tough wins when you face starters like that.”

Hanley Ramirez and Ethier were out of the Dodgers’ lineup with injuries after starting in the opener. Los Angeles missed a handful of opportunities, going 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position for a two-day total of 1 for 16. Star rookie Yasiel Puig struck out in all four of his at-bats.

“We had our chances,” Kershaw said. “We had our chances, for sure. You’ve got to give a lot of credit to Wacha.”

The teams may have been hindered by shadows creeping across Busch Stadium in a late-afternoon start, with lights providing no real help. Both also were no doubt fatigued, which might have shown on the crucial passed ball by Ellis that wound up resulting in an unearned run.

Wacha was nearly untouchable for the third straight start, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts and a walk in 6 2/3 innings.

The 22-year-old right-hander was one out away from a no-hitter in his last start of the regular season, losing it on an infield hit by Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman. Wacha ignored a crowd chanting his name in Game 4 of the division series at Pittsburgh, holding the Pirates hitless for 7 1/3 innings to bring the series back home.

In 22 2/3 innings in his last three starts, Wacha has given up two runs on seven hits with 26 strikeouts and five walks.

The 6-6 Wacha struck out Puig and Juan Uribe with the bases loaded to end the sixth. Catcher Yadier Molina helped by making a couple trips to the mound.

“That was a game-changer right there,” Molina said. “To get out of that inning was unbelievable.”

Kershaw led off with a single, and runners were on second and third after second baseman Matt Carpenter slid in shallow right to glove Carl Crawford’s infield hit but threw it away for an error trying to get a forceout at second.

Adrian Gonzalez was walked intentionally to load the bases and the Dodgers 4-5 hitters coming up. Puig struck out on a fastball in the dirt and Uribe had a feeble cut chasing a 1-2 pitch out of the zone.

Carpenter tripled on Kershaw’s first pitch of the game but didn’t budge when the lefty retired the next three on nine pitches.

The Cardinals had another runner at third with nobody out in the fifth after Freese doubled and advanced on a passed ball by Ellis. This time they converted on Jay’s sacrifice fly to shallow left as Crawford’s throw was well offline.

The previous pitch the Cardinals tried to squeeze in a run with the Dodgers infield playing in, but Jay fouled off a 1-1 pitch.

Kershaw worked six snappy innings, needing just 72 pitches. He gave up two hits and struck out five.

The majors’ ERA leader had plenty left, too, but the Dodgers needed runs and manager Don Mattingly opted for pinch-hitter Michael Young after Nick Punto’s two-out single in the seventh.

“I always want to stay in the game, but I understand where Donnie’s coming from,” Kershaw said. “I get it. We can’t give up any more outs and Michael Young is one of the best players the last 10 years.”

The Cardinals lifted Wacha for another stingy rookie. Siegrist, who had a minuscule 0.45 ERA in his debut season, threw a pair of wild pitches before getting Young on a flyout to end the seventh.

Relievers Randy Choate and Carlos Martinez pitched the eighth for St. Louis before turning it over to Rosenthal.

The Cardinals handed Kershaw two of his nine losses this season and have beaten him four consecutive times overall.

Western volleyball rallies to defeat South Dakota Mines

riggertMissouriWesternMissouri Western volleyball came from behind against South Dakota School of Mines picking up a five set victory (25-19, 20-25, 25-27, 25-18, 16-14) in the Missouri Southern Invitational. The Griffons have won three matches in a row improving to 9-10 on the season.

The Griffons came out in the first set on fire opening up a 12-6 lead midway through the set. MWSU continued to play well coming away with a 25-19 victory in set two. Set two was a back and forth battle with both teams playing to a 15-15 tie. Unfortunately the Griffon offense went cold as the Hardrockers finished the set on a 10-4 run evening the match at one.

In set three things looked good as they used a 6-0 run claiming a 19-13 lead. Once again the Griffon offense struggled as Mines closed on a 14-6 run winning 27-25 taking a 2-1 lead in the set. In set four the Griffons got out to another early lead and this time held on for the 25-18 victory.

The fifth and final set was a crazy set. The Hardrockers opened taking a 6-3 lead. The Griffons responded with a 5-2 run claiming a 8-6 lead after a Kelsey Olion kill. The Hardrockers took control for the next few points using a 6-0 run taking a 12-8 lead. The Griffons stayed poised closing on a 9-2 run winning 16-14.

The Griffons hit .185 with 65 kills in the match. Four Griffons had double digit kills with Olion leading the way with 16. Amanda Boender, Erica Rottinghaus and Lindsey Partridge had 14, 13 and 11 respectively. Kelly Scannell had another career high with 55 set assists while Sarah Faubel had a career best 30 of the Griffons season high 98 digs.

The Hardrockers fell to 6-13 on the season with Justine Blade leading the way with 18 kills. Middella Reese had 29 digs while Carsyn Garcia had 53 set assists.

Beltran sends St. Louis to Game 1 win against Dodgers in 13 innings

CardsST. LOUIS — Carlos Beltran capped his latest scintillating postseason performance with an RBI single in the 13th inning early Saturday that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in the NL championship series opener.

Beltran hit a tying, two-run double in the third inning, then threw out a runner at the plate from right field in the 10th to keep it even.

Well past midnight at Busch Stadium, Beltran singled into the right-field corner with one out against Kenley Jansen in the 13th to end a game that took 4 hours, 47 minutes. It was the longest postseason game for the Dodgers since the 1916 World Series.

Game 2 is Saturday afternoon.

Pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso singled with one out in the 13th off rookie Chris Withrow and Matt Carpenter walked. Jansen, usually the Dodgers’ closer, relieved and Beltran won it with his hit on a 3-1 count.

Winning pitcher Lance Lynn strengthened his case for a possible Game 4 start with two scoreless innings. Withrow took the loss.

The Dodgers had two on in the ninth, 10th and 11th and came up empty. They stranded 11 overall while going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. They averaged 6 1-2 runs and batted .333, best ever in an NL postseason series, while taking a four-game division series from the Braves.

Neither team had much time to exhale before the next game, scheduled to start 14 1-2 hours after Descalso crossed the plate. It features a marquee pitching matchup — major league ERA leader Clayton Kershaw vs. Cardinals rookie Michael Wacha, who’s flirted with no-hitters his last two starts.

The Dodgers failed to capitalize on Zack Greinke’s season-high 10 strikeouts in eight stingy innings because they couldn’t knock out Joe Kelly.
