Molina leads Cardinals past Seattle as they remain tied for 1st place

CardsYadier Molina never got down during his recent rut. So the All-Star catcher wasn’t about to celebrate after breaking out of the skid on Sunday.

Molina had a home run and three singles as Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals remained tied for first place in the NL Central with a 12-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Molina’s second-inning homer off Erasmo Ramirez (5-2) snapped an 0-for-15 skid.

”It’s not about one guy, it’s about the team,” Molina said. ”I came out aggressive. But right now, it’s just about getting wins.”

Molina scored three times and raised his batting average to .317.

”Yadi’s had a special offensive year,” manager Mike Matheny said. ”He’s been so good. I just want him to keep going and finish the season the way he started.”

Matt Adams also homered as St. Louis finished up a 7-2 homestand and kept pace with Pittsburgh. Both teams are 87-62 with 13 games remaining.

Miller (14-9) gave up one earned run and three hits in five innings. He became the first St. Louis rookie to reach 14 wins in a season since Dick Hughes won 16 in 1967.

St. Louis got 19 hits after totaling just three runs on seven hits over the first two games of the series.

Matt Carpenter keyed the fourth-inning burst with a two-run bases-loaded single. Daniel Descalso and Matt Holliday also had RBI hits in the inning.

”The offense really showed up today,” Carpenter said. ”We were able to score some runs. That’s just the way it goes some times. There’s no rhyme or reason for why that happens, it’s just baseball.”

The Cardinals’ hit total was their second-highest total this season. The Cardinals had 21 hits in a 10-6 win against the Chicago Cubs on July 14.

”We took a lot of those grinding at-bats that we keep talking about,” Matheny said. ”They went deep in counts, they stayed within the zone and fouled off some tough ones. We’ve got everybody feeling right and contributing.”

The Cardinals batted around in the fourth and fifth, scoring four runs in each inning to hand Seattle its sixth loss in seven games.

Holliday and Carpenter finished with three hits and two RBIs two apiece.

Adams pushed the lead to 7-2 with his 14th homer to highlight the fifth.

Miller did not allow a hit in the first three innings and managed to battle through the fourth and fifth despite not having what he called his best stuff.

”Today I didn’t do the best job of attacking hitters,” Miller said. ”I was losing the strike zone, but I just kept battling through it.”

Seattle manager Eric Wedge was not surprised to see the Cardinals’ hitters break loose after struggling in back-to-back games.

”They really put it together today,” Wedge said. ”You look at their top five guys, they all have quite a bit to offer.”

Ramirez had pitched into the sixth inning in each of his last six starts, but was unable to hold off the Cardinals.

”I just kind of fell apart in that one inning,” he said. ”I got a little behind the count and I threw my fastball too much.”

No. 6 Griffons run past Missouri S&T in home opener

MWSUThe 6th ranked Missouri Western football team rolled to a 63-3 victory over the Missouri S&T Miners in their 2013 home opener in Spratt Stadium. The Griffons ran for 331 yards with Tra Brown and Raphael Spencer going for 109 and 107 respectively. The Griffons improve to 40-24 in September under Partridge and 30-14-1 in home openers. The Griffons have beat the Miners eight straight times improving to 2-0 on the season.

Travis Partridge scored on an 11-yard rush up the middle to break the scoreless game with 8:14 to go in the first quarter.

Minutes later, sophomore running back Raphael Spencer ran the ball in from 30-yards out to mark the score 14-0. Spencer continued his damage into the second quarter, scoring on 41-yard run on the outside as the Griffons went up 21-0 with 12:36 left in the first half.

Later in the half, reserve end Mackenzie Wischmann blocked a punt up the middle and freshman Darrian Bass recovered the ball and ran it into the end zone. Bass’ score made it 28-0 with just more than four minutes to play in the half.

After the Miners added a field goal, Dominic Thomas’ 92-yard kick return was negated by a holding call, one of nine penalties the Griffons garnered in the opening half. Still, Partridge marched the team down field and found freshman Daylon Harper in the end zone for a 6-yard reception with 22 seconds left.

At halftime, Spencer led the ground game with 107 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns. Partridge was 8-for-16 with 77 yards and a touchdown. Leading the team with four tackles at halftime was Jarred Henry.

Partridge opened up the second half with a 34-yard strike to Dee Tolliver, who ran into the end zone making it 42-3 with exactly 14 minutes to play in the third.

Reserves proceeded into the game late in the third quarter for the Griffons, and Nate Wilson hit Jon Green in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown. Tra Brown sped to the outside and broke out a 59-yard score to make it 56-3 to start the fourth.

Brown then busted another long touchdown with 2:59 to go. The 39-yard sprint made it 63-3.

Five Griffons scored their first career touchdown, including Brown, Wilson, Green, Harper and Bass.

The Griffons finished with 462 yards on 61 plays while the Miners had just 213 on 73. Tolliver led the way receiving for MWSU catching three passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Brody Berrie led the way with nine tackles with five being solo and four being assisted. Jorge Belcher and John Oglesby finished with seven total tackles.

The Miners fall to 0-2 on the season. Zenel Hudson had 16 carries for 23 yards while DeSoto Dickson had 22 yards on seven carries. Reed Brown had 130 yards connecting on 15-of-26 passes with two interceptions. Chris Emesih led the way defensively with six tackles with one sack.

The Griffons return to MIAA play on Saturday, September 21 when they travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on Nebraska-Kearney. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm.

Bearcats rally past Central Missouri for 28-24 victory

NWMSUNorthwest Missouri State’s championship pedigree took over when the Bearcats needed it most.

The Bearcats trailed by three points against Central Missouri with 7:09 left in the game on a beautiful Saturday evening that had the rumblings of an ugly night.

Sophomore quarterback Brady Bolles and defensive lineman Brandon Yost made sure everything about the Bearcats and the evening stayed perfect.

Bolles orchestrated an 11-play, 67-yard drive that culminated with a battering nine yard touchdown run by Bolles that gave Northwest a four-point lead.

The Mules still had a chance. Central quarterback Hayden Hawk had already tossed three touchdowns. He had 2:51 left to operate.

Yost put an end to that when he intercepted a pass off a ricochet with a little over a minute left, preserving Northwest’s thrilling 28-24 victory in front of 7,404 fans at Bearcat Stadium. “I was in such shock that I actually caught the ball,” Yost said. “Our mindset was three and out. We could not allow them to get a first down.

“This game has been highlighted on our schedule since we lost last year. It is an amazing feeling to win this game.”

With the win, Northwest improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in the MIAA.

“I was proud of our effort and the way our kids kept their composure,” Northwest coach Adam Dorrel said. “Tough games like that, we didn’t make a lot of mistakes down the stretch. That is a sign of a mature football team. Nobody panicked.”

Just as important, the Bearcats proved they are in this together regardless of the adversity that hits them during the game.

Bolles proved that with his postgame comments, crediting the defense and special teams for the victory and adding that the encouragement that senior starting quarterback Trevor Adams gave him and the entire offensive unit meant a lot.

“We had to score, but our defense and special teams won us that game today,” said Bolles, who completed 17 of 23 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown and rushed 19 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns. “They played their butts off all game. They were giving their all the whole game, and we just wanted to return the favor.

“He (Adams) is incredible. He is our senior captain. He is our leader. His attitude tonight was just incredible. For me to come off the sideline and for him to say, ‘keep playing the game. It’s football, have fun.’

“He was encouraging me and that goes far with me to know he was behind me and behind the coaches no matter what they decide. His attitude was incredible. He is going to have a great game next week.”

It took togetherness to pull this one out. Although Bolles capped the drive with a touchdown run, Billy Creason and Robert Burton had key runs to keep the chains moving.

“Basically, we were looking to gain 10 yards at a time,” said Creason, who finished with 66 yards in 10 carries. “We made sure we executed, not trying to be perfect, but making sure we were getting positive yards.

“We knew it was going to be a fight. This just shows the kind of team we are and the capabilities we have as a team. We pull together and grew a bond at the end and showed that we could pull out of a hole.”

The Bearcats might not have been in position for a game-winning drive if it were not for the special teams.

Northwest trailed the entire first half and much of the third quarter when redshirt freshman Jacob Vollstedt blocked a punt and Dylan Chadwick scooped it up and raced 25 yards for a touchdown that gave the Bearcats their first lead at 21-17 with 2:05 left in the third quarter.

“Coach Ken Gordon puts us in great position every week,” Vollstedt said. “I think he spends more hours in a day on special than I will ever know. I wasn’t supposed to be the one to block it. It was set up for the other side. He has it so detailed he knew exactly what they were going to do and when they were going to do it.

“He said they were going to motion right so I drifted right and came off the edge. I got lucky. Anybody could have blocked it. I just happened to have the one.”

Central, though, was determined. The Mules didn’t want to drop to 0-2 on the season. They quickly responded with a seven-play, 76-yard drive to recapture the lead at 24-21 with 14:15 left in the game.

Northwest defense played strong the rest of the way, allowing the offense to eventually push across the winning points.

A bleak first quarter for Northwest eventually turned for the better even though the Bearcats went into halftime trailing 17-14.

It could have been much worse.

Central jumped to a 17-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Touchdown passes of 33 yards and 55 yards by Hawk put the Bearcats in a big hole.

With Adams struggling, Northwest turned to Bolles, who engineered a seven-play, 75 yard touchdown drive that Bolles finished with a five-yard scoring run.

Adams showed his character by pumping up his teammates on the sidelines. It’s a lesson that any athlete should learn about putting the team first.

“Trevor is a great leader,” Creason said. “It doesn’t matter if he is in the game or not, we can lean on Trevor. He is going to be there to give us some good words of wisdom.”

The Bearcats defense toughened up in the second quarter, preventing Central from any serious scoring threats.

Northwest offense started sputtering again until late in the second quarter. The Bearcats started on their own eight with 6:33 left before halftime.

Bolles did a great job mixing the pass with the run. Northwest methodically marched down field and eventually scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bolles to Korey Jackson with 1:09 remaining in the first half.

The key statistic matched the closeness of the game. The Mules ran 35 plays and gained 198 total yards. Northwest had 36 offensive plays for 192 yards.

Kansas get beat on the road at Rice

KUChris Boswell kicked a 56-yard, go-ahead field goal with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and Charles Ross added an 8-yard touchdown run as Rice beat Kansas 23-14 Saturday night.

Taylor McHargue completed 14 of 31 pass attempts for 168 yards and Ross carried the ball a career-high 27 times for 157 yards, to lead the Owls offense. But it was Rice’s Driphus Jackson who came off the bench to drive the Owls down the field in the fourth quarter, as they scored their only offensive touchdown of the contest.

James Sims led the Jayhawks with 109 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Rice took a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.

Nebraska blows 18-point lead and gets hammered by UCLA

NUUCLA’s emotional week ended with the Bruins making the biggest comeback by a visitor to Lincoln in nearly a century.

Brett Hundley threw three touchdown passes while No. 16 UCLA wiped out an 18-point deficit to defeat No. 23 Nebraska 41-21 and stun into silence a record crowd of 91,471 on Saturday.

The win came six days after UCLA receiver Nick Pasquale was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while he was walking in his hometown and a day before coaches and teammates travel to San Clemente, Calif., for his memorial service.

”You can’t believe how tough it was on them,” Bruins coach Jim Mora said. ”You never want to say you won one for somebody. We didn’t win one for Nick. What we tried to do today is go out and play with the type or energy, enthusiasm and passion for the game that would reflect what he meant to us.”

The Bruins wore No. 36 patches on their jerseys in memory of Pasquale. The Huskers wore No. 36 decals on their helmets, and there was a moment of silence for Pasquale before the game.

The Huskers (2-1), wearing alternate black jerseys instead of their traditional home red, looked to be in total control in the first half.

Then they had a flashback to last year at the Rose Bowl, when they couldn’t stop Hundley and an offense that had 653 yards in a 36-30 Bruins’ win.

”The first half there was so much emotion, I’m not going to lie,” Hundley said. ”I just had so much emotion going into the game. There were a lot of things that added up to it. After the first half, everything slowed down and we got back to playing football and came out with the win.”

The 18 points marked the biggest deficit overcome by a Nebraska opponent in Lincoln since Washington State, according to the university yearbook, erased a 20-0 halftime deficit to win 21-20 in 1920. Memorial Stadium opened in 1923.

The Bruins (2-0) scored 35 points in 16 minutes. The barrage started with Paul Perkins’ 10-yard touchdown run to cut Nebraska’s lead to 21-10 at the half.

Jordon James scored from 3 yards before Hundley threw TD passes of 28 yards to Shaquelle Evans, 12 yards to Phillip Ruhl and 3 yards to Nate Iese.

”We came in at halftime and there weren’t a lot of adjustments that needed to be made,” Mora said. ”It was more of an adjustment in our mindset.”

Mora told his players at halftime that they needed to relax and breathe.

”There were no mystical, magical X’s and O’s,” Mora said. ”It was just our players doing what they’re supposed to do and really just loving what they do, and that’s playing football.”

Nebraska’s defense, which has struggled in the biggest games in the past year, allowed 236 yards in the third quarter and 504 for the game.

”The second half was a lot like last year,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. ”We made the tackles in the first half. I don’t know how many tackles we missed in that second half but it is a lot. We missed tackle after tackle after tackle.”

Nebraska came into the game hoping to get even for last year’s embarrassing performance against UCLA.

Bruins linebacker Anthony Barr, who made 11 tackles and forced three fumbles, said he and his teammates also felt they had something to prove.

”A lot people said last year was a fluke,” Barr said. ”We were listening to that and had a chip on our shoulder coming in here. We didn’t play with enough controlled emotion in the first half.

”The emotion got the best of us and we wanted to do a little bit too much on offense and defense. When that kind of settled down a little bit, we took a deep breath and came out and made a statement.”

The Huskers still looked as if they had some life in them when, trailing 38-21, they moved from their 25 to the UCLA 12 early in the fourth quarter.

But Ameer Abdullah fumbled at the 6 after getting hit by Barr.

Nebraska generated more than 19 yards on just two of its last 10 possessions and had only 130 of its 326 yards after halftime.

”I felt at times I was looking at our guys on the sideline and it was like they saw a ghost,” Pelini said. ”Someone has to step up and make a play. We needed to get the momentum turned back the other way, and it didn’t happen.”

Hundley completed 16 of 25 passes for 294 yards, with one interception that set up Nebraska’s first touchdown. James ran 22 times for 105 yards and a TD.

Taylor Martinez was 21 of 35 for 203 yards and three touchdowns for the Huskers, and Abdullah had 98 yards on 23 carries.

Hundley kept alive the Bruins’ lone touchdown drive of the first half when he scrambled for 13 yards on a third-and-12.

”That might be the play of the game,” Mora said. ”I don’t like to point to a single play. But right there, we needed that.”

Hundley passed for 32 yards to Devin Fuller on the next play, and Perkins went 10 yards up the middle to make it an 11-point game.
