Mizzou football lauded by NCAA for Top 10 APR rank

riggertMizzouThe University of Missouri football program has received acclaim from the NCAA for its academic achievements once again.  The Mizzou football team has been recognized by the NCAA for ranking in the top 10 percent in the nation in Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the 2011-12 academic year, it was announced Wednesday.

Mizzou’s football, gymnastics and women’s swimming squads all posted top 10 APR marks for the 2011-12 academic year.  The full APR report from the NCAA will be made available June 10, announcing detailed rates for all Mizzou teams.

The recognition is par for the course for the Tiger football program under the direction of Head Coach Gary Pinkel.  Mizzou has consistently ranked near the top of its conference in APR and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) during his tenure.  In fact, from the last five senior classes, 93-of-97 student-athletes (96%) have gone on to receive their MU degrees.  Five members of the 20-member senior class of 2013 have already received their undergraduate degrees, and will be playing the upcoming season as graduate students – OL Justin Britt (Lebanon, Mo.), DL Brayden Burnett (Southlake, Texas), Marvin Foster (Forth Worth, Texas), DB Randy Ponder (Edmond, Okla.), and LB Andrew Wilson (Peculiar, Mo.).  A sixth Tiger senior, WR L’Damian Washington, is expected to join that group as a Mizzou graduate this August.

The Tiger football program was one of two from the Southeastern Conference to receive top-10 recognition, joined by Alabama.

“We are very proud of this recognition, but really more about the culture that we have here at Mizzou and our focus on academics,” said Head Coach Gary Pinkel.  “The support system that is in place here is second to none, and that allows our young men and for their families to know that they will leave as college graduates.  From our outstanding faculty, to our Total Person and Life Skills program, there are a lot of top-notch people who come together and make it an extremely successful environment at Mizzou.  We’re certainly very grateful for their efforts,” he said.

Missouri’s gymnastics team has ranked in the top 10 nationally for three-straight academic years, while the women’s swimming team at Mizzou has accomplished the feat in two of the last three years (2009-10).

The APR was developed by the NCAA in 2004 to measure the academic progress and performance of athletic programs at member institutions. The multi-year average for the latest Academic Progress Rate Report spans the last four years and institutions are awarded points when a student-athlete remains academically eligible for competition and when he or she either returns to the institution the following semester or graduates.

The Tigers’ academic pursuits are aided by Mizzou’s Total Person Program, a comprehensive array of tutorial and life skills services to ensure their success. The Total Person Program provides Mizzou’s student-athletes with support tailored to each individual’s academic needs and goals.

Mustangs’ game at Clarinda postponed Wednesday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their game at Clarinda postponed Wednesday night because of rain.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team will make the game up this Sunday.  The two teams were scheduled to play that day and now they’ll play a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Mustangs are 3-3 and 2-3 in MINK League play after losing back-to-back games to Ozark and Omaha on the road.

St. Joseph returns home Thursday for a non-league game against North Kansas City.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Kansas City snaps home losing skid with 4-1 win over Twins

RoyalsJeremy Guthrie lasted six shaky innings and the Kansas City bullpen held off the Minnesota Twins the rest of the way Wednesday night, wrapping up a 4-1 victory that ended the Royals’ franchise-record 11-game home losing streak.

It had been exactly one month since Kansas City won a game at Kauffman Stadium, a period marked by offensive ineptitude that had resulted in a precipitous slide into last place in the AL Central.

It also marked the end for hitting coaches Jack Maloof and Andre David, and the return of George Brett to the dugout. The Hall of Fame third baseman was appointed interim hitting coach last week, and while the results still haven’t been great, the Royals may be finally starting to show a spark.

The Twins jumped out to a first-inning lead off Guthrie (6-3), but the right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam with the help of a nice catch by first baseman Eric Hosmer to prevent any additional damage.

The Royals answered in the bottom half when Hosmer reached second on an error and Salvador Perez drove him in with a single. P.J. Walters (2-1) walked the bases loaded, and David Lough’s two-run, two-out single gave Kansas City enough runs for the rest of the night.

Aaron Crow got the Royals out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning, and Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect eighth. Greg Holland put the first two runners aboard in the ninth before striking out Justin Morneau, Ryan Doumit and Chris Parmelee for his 10th save of the season.

Josh Willingham drove in the only run for the Twins, who left 14 on base.

Billy Butler had three hits, including an RBI single in the seventh, and Mike Moustakas drove a pitch from Walters in the first that would have been a three-run shot had it carried another five feet.

Meanwhile, Guthrie limited the Twins to six hits and three walks to win for the first time since May 9. He also ended a streak of 18 consecutive games by Royals starters without a victory.

Guthrie certainly got some help from his defense.

Hosmer robbed a fan of a foul ball when he made a catch near the Royals’ dugout with the bases loaded to end the first inning. Then in the third, second baseman Chris Getz made a diving play to his left to pilfer Doumit of a base hit that likely would have scored a run.

Walters gave up seven hits and three walks in six innings, but all three runs were unearned.

The Twins right-hander allowed a pair of singles to start the third before Moustakas grounded into a double play to scuttle that inning. He also gave up a single leading off the fourth before Getz grounded into a double play, one that proved timely when Alcides Escobar tripled moments later.

The middle innings were played through a persistent mist that at times turned to rain, giving the sparsely populated bowl of the stadium the look of a car wash. But the grounds crew kept the infield dry, and crew chief Tom Hallion never appeared close to calling for the tarp.

KSU’s Matthys named to Freshman All-America team

NCAA Arkansas Kansas St BaseballThe Kansas State record holder for wins and saves by a freshman, relief pitcher Jake Matthys has been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, Collegiate Baseball announced Wednesday.

Matthys is the sixth Wildcat to earn Freshman All-America honors since 2006 and the first pitcher honored since James Allen in 2009. The Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Matthys was one of eight players from the conference to be named to the team.

A product of Spring Lake Park, Minn., Matthys enters the Corvallis Super Regional with an 8-1 record and a 1.96 ERA to go along with nine saves. Aside from the school freshman records, the right-hander has the most wins by a K-State relief pitcher in the Big 12 era and currently ranks eighth in school history in single-season ERA. Matthys has continually performed well under pressure, allowing just three of his 31 inherited runners to score and retiring 24 of his 32 first batters faced.

Matthys picked up a pair of saves last week to help the Wildcats earn their first-ever regional title. He tossed 2.1 no-hit innings with two strikeouts against Bryant before pitching the final two scoreless frames in the regional championship against Arkansas. The appearance against the Razorbacks was his 32nd of the year, which broke the school record for relief outings.

Kansas State travels to Corvallis, Ore., to take on Oregon State in a best-of-three series for the right to advance to the College World Series. The Super Regional begins with a 6 p.m. (CT) contest Saturday, while Game Two is slated for 9 p.m. (CT) Sunday. If necessary, Game Three will be played at 6 p.m. (CT) Monday.

Cardinals get blown out by Arizona for second straight loss

CardsPaul Goldschmidt hit his second grand slam in five days, Wade Miley bounced back from his two worst outings of the season and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-3 on Wednesday night.

Arizona has won four of five. St. Louis, with the best record in the majors, dropped back-to-back games for the first time since April 28-29.

Goldschmidt became the first Arizona player with two slams on the same road trip. He hit one in a 12-4 win at the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

Goldschmidt also hit a go-ahead single in the 14th inning to beat St. Louis on Tuesday night. He has a team-leading 14 homers and leads the NL with 53 RBIs, including 12 in his last five games.

Miley (4-5) gave up three runs on 11 hits over 6 2-3 innings. He had given up seven earned runs in each of his previous two starts, but rallied to strike out three and walk one.

Martin Prado had two doubles and scored twice for the Diamondbacks.

Joe Kelly (0-3), making his first start of the season, gave up one earned run in 5 2-3 innings. He made 16 successive appearances of out of the bullpen this season, but was forced into a spot start due to a day-night doubleheader on Saturday.

Matt Carpenter had four hits for the Cardinals and pushed his career-best hitting streak to 14 games.

The Diamondbacks erupted for five runs in the seventh off just-called up righty Maikel Cleto to take control 7-1. Wil Nieves started the uprising with an RBI single before Goldschmidt hit his 421-foot slam.

Gerardo Parra keyed a three-run eighth with a two-run single.

David Freese extended his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games with a single in the St. Louis sixth. It is the longest current run in the majors.

Habermehl retires as women’s golf coach at Missouri Western

MWSUAfter seven years at the helm, Missouri Western Women’s Golf Coach Cathy Habermehl has retired.

Habermehl took over the program at a critical time in the early stages of its history prior to the 2006-07 season and built the team into one of the best in the MIAA.  In 51 events over the last five years, the team had ten first place finishes and 17 second place finishes.

“I feel that it is time for me to focus on other priorities in my life. After seven years, I feel I’m leaving the team in a good place, with great kids that can achieve another level with a new coach. I have been proud to be their coach and will always treasure their friendships,” Habermehl said.

Habermehl’s recruiting efforts produced many solid student-athletes in her tenure including the best player in school history as Natalie Bird was a four time All-MIAA selection and was this season named the MWSU/St. Joseph News-Press Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

For her efforts, Habermehl was voted by league coaches as the 2011 MIAA Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.

“We’d like to thank Coach Habermehl for seven great years at the helm of our women’s golf program,” said Director of Athletics Kurt McGuffin.  “Her passion and dedication to the game of golf, her student-athletes and our department have been tremendous and the results have shown both on and off the course.”

The program reached new heights this season as for the first time, the team qualified a student-athlete for the NCAA Tournament as Natalie Bird competed as an individual in the Central Region Championship held last May at St. Joseph Country Club.

Coach Habermehl’s team excelled in the classroom and the community as well as her team boasted the highest department team GPA this past spring.  Women’s golf has also produced two of the previous three winners of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Community Service Award of the Year as Lexi Webb was the 2011 recipient and Casi Webb this past year.

A search for a new coach will begin immediately.

St. Joseph drops second straight as they lose 2-1 at Omaha

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their second consecutive loss as they fell on the road at Omaha Tuesday night, 2-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 3-3 this season and 2-3 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs offense struggled as the only run they scored came in the second inning when Shane Segovia scored on a wild pitch.

St. Joseph had only seven hits, all singles, and left ten runners on base. No Mustang had more than one hit in the game.

St. Joe starter Redmond Floyd suffered the loss as he went six innings and allowed just two hits and two runs.  Floyd struck out eight batters, but he also walked seven.

Jarrod Miller and Blake Kolons threw well out of the bullpen as they combined for two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

The Mustangs close out their five-game road trip Wednesday night as they play at Clarinda.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Royals fall to Twins for franchise-record 11th straight loss at home

RoyalsRyan Doumit homered and drove in a pair of runs Tuesday night, sending the Minnesota Twins to a 3-0 victory and the Kansas City Royals to their franchise-record 11th straight home loss.

Samuel Deduno (2-1) allowed four hits over six-plus innings for the Twins, who have rebounded nicely from a 10-game losing streak to win eight of 10. They also managed to exact a little revenge on the Royals, who swept them in early April – a three-game set that seems long ago.

While the Twins have soared, the Royals have lost 22 of their last 28 games.

The way Kansas City has been hitting lately, the game was basically decided when Doumit went deep off Luis Mendoza (1-3) leading off the fourth inning. But just to be safe, Doumit and Josh Willingham added RBI singles in the fifth inning to provide the Twins with a three-run cushion.

Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

Mendoza didn’t allow a hit until Doumit’s shot in the fourth. The right-hander escaped the inning, but four straight one-out hits in the fifth ultimately knocked him from game.

It was the 18th straight time that the Royals’ starter has failed to win a decision.

Their offense has been the biggest culprit: The Royals are hitting.183 with runners in scoring position since May 21, when they led the AL with a .308 average in such situations. That includes going 0 for 7 on Tuesday night, and 2 for 27 over their past three games.

It’s certainly not the start that Hall of Famer George Brett wanted to get off to as the team’s interim hitting coach. The Royals’ punchless offense has continued to scuffle in the five games since Jack Maloof and Andre David were reassigned and Brett given his familiar No. 5 jersey to wear.

Meanwhile, the Twins have headed in the opposite direction.

After enduring one of the longest losing streaks in franchise history, their offense has propelled the Twins to seven wins in their last eight games – four straight over Milwaukee and a series win over Seattle that was highlighted by a 10-0 blowout in the finale on Sunday.

Doumit has been one of the catalysts for the resurgence. After getting off to a slow start, he’s hitting .324 with four homers and 13 RBIs over his last eight games.

Of course, just about any offense would have been enough given the combination of the Royals’ weak hitting and the stingy work by Deduno and the Twins bullpen.

Deduno, who turned heads for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, struck out five while walking just two. It was his second straight strong start after allowing one run on four hits in seven innings in a victory over the Brewers last Wednesday night.

Relievers Brian Duensing, Casey Fien and Jared Burton got through the seventh and eighth innings unscathed, and Perkins took care of the ninth. The Twins bullpen has combined to allow just four runs over their last 37 1-3 innings.
