Griffons split doubleheader with Central Oklahoma; win streak ends at 17

MWSUThe Missouri Western baseball team split an MIAA doubleheader with the Central Oklahoma Bronchos on Friday afternoon. The Griffons won game one 5-4 before losing the night cap 7-5. The Griffons 17 game winning streak was ended but they are now 18-4 overall and 13-1 in MIAA play.

GAME 1
MWSU 5, UCO 4

The Griffons used a four run second inning and solid pitching from Brandon Simmons and Logan Hollingsworth picking up their 17th straight victory by a score of 5-4 over the Bronchos.

Simmons gave up a two-run homer to Ross Rose in the top of the second inning but from there he would leave two UCO runners on while striking out seven. He went six innings giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. He now has 200 strikeouts in his career which puts him in fifth place all-time in MWSU history. He is 5-0 on the season.

The Griffons responded in their half of the second using three doubles and four hits gaining a 4-2 lead. Spencer Shockley, Jimmy Smelcer and Shawn Egge all got doubles in the inning.

The Bronchos scratched across runs in the third and fifth tying the score at four. In the bottom of the sixth the Griffons opened up the inning with a triple by Nate Ramler. Pinch runner Jeremy Monty scored on a Grant Fink single down the right field line giving MWSU the 5-4 lead.

Hollingswoth got the save going one inning striking out two. He picked up his third save of the season.

The Griffons had seven hits with Smelcer leading the way with two.

The Bronchos had five hits with Matt Malloy and Cesar Wong each getting two. Landon Hallam got the loss going six innings giving up seven hits, five earned runs while striking out four. He falls to 1-3 with the loss.

GAME 2

In game two the Griffons had five costly errors and stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth falling 7-5 snapping their 17 game winning streak.

The Griffons opened up a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning but an error leading off the top of the 7th led to five UCO runs giving them a 7-3 lead after six and a half.

The Griffons battled back scoring two in the bottom of the eighth but left the bases loaded in the ninth falling by two.

The Central Oklahoma Bronchos sit at 16-7 overall and 13-7 in MIAA play.

riggertNorthwestThe Northwest Missouri State baseball team picked up its seventh win of the season Friday by beating Truman State 8-3 in a nine inning affair.

The Bearcats were able to have a big inning early in the game when they put five runs up in the top of the second inning. Paul Johnson was able to knock in Derek Meyer for the first run of the game. Johnson stole second and would eventually score on a throwing error. Ryan Abernathy also scored on an error to put Northwest up 3-0. Steven Garber picked up two RBIs with a single to center field to add to the total and put his team up 5-0.

Northwest added one more insurance one in the ninth inning when Baccari grabbed his second RBI of the game when he plated Bedard with a sac fly.

The Bulldogs added one in the ninth but that would be it as the Bearcats improved to 7-16, 5-13 with the 8-3 victory.

Marcus Garrett picked up win number two on the season as he went 7.0 strong innings giving up three hits and collecting two strikeouts.

No. 1 seed Kansas rallies to defeat Western Kentucky

KUJeff Withey scored 17 points and top-seeded Kansas struggled to put away scrappy Western Kentucky in a 64-57 victory Friday night that avoided what would have been the biggest upset on a day full of them in the NCAA tournament.

The Jayhawks (30-5), flummoxed by the Hilltoppers’ full-court pressure, trailed 31-30 at halftime. Kansas eventually built an 11-point lead in the second half, but couldn’t put Western Kentucky away until Ben McLemore’s two foul shots with 11 seconds left in the game.

McLemore and Travis Releford scored 11 each for the Jayhawks (30-5), who wearily advanced to play No. 8 seed North Carolina and former coach Roy Williams in the South Regional on Sunday.

Jamal Crook scored 13 points and T.J. Price had 12 for the Hilltoppers (20-16), who would have made history by becoming the first No. 16 seed to upend a No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Earlier in the day, No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast stunned second-seeded Georgetown, perhaps emboldening the Sun Belt champions. And on the same floor at the Sprint Center, 13th-seeded La Salle knocked off Kansas State and No. 12 seed Ole Miss beat fifth-seeded Wisconsin.

Alas, the undersized team in red couldn’t hang tough with the bigger blue bloods down the stretch, allowing Kansas to reach 30 wins for the fourth straight season — the first time that’s happened in Division I men’s basketball, after Memphis was forced to vacate the 2008 season.

The Jayhawks also improved to 7-0 at the Sprint Center this season.

Since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, 16 seeds are winless against No. 1 seeds in 116 games, including Southern’s heartbreaking 64-58 loss to Gonzaga on Thursday.

Western Kentucky, though, spent the first half pinning Kansas against the ropes.

Price hit an opener 3-pointer in the opening minute, George Fant was able to use his superior quickness against the bigger Withey in the paint, and the Hilltoppers — who needed four wins to capture the Sun Belt tournament title and the league’s automatic bid — slowly built a 20-16 lead.

The heavily pro-Kansas crowd fell quiet, even as Jayhawks coach Bill Self turned up the volume on the sideline, laying into his team for its lethargic start.

Kansas finally pulled ahead for the first time since midway through the first half when Elijah Johnson finished off a three-point play that made it 28-27 with 90 seconds left, but a pair of baskets by Price down the stretch gave the scrappy Hilltoppers a 31-30 lead at the break.

The Jayhawks seized the lead again early in the second half when Kevin Young followed up his own miss by grabbing the rebound and throwing down a reverse jam, and then Releford scored off a nifty feed from McLemore, forcing Western Kentucky coach Ray Harper to burn a timeout.

Fant and Aleksejs Rostov both picked up their fourth fouls midway through the half, taking seats next to Harper on the Western Kentucky bench. But the longtime Division II and NAIA coach couldn’t keep his hottest hands there for long, and decided to gamble by putting them back in.

Farmer rolled snake eyes when Fant fouled out with 5:37 remaining.

Withey made one of two free throws, McLemore drove untouched down the lane for an easy basket, and Withey scored on a nifty move in the post to push the Jayhawks to a 52-42 lead — their biggest of the game — and force Farmer to call another timeout with 3:44 left on the clock.

Western Kentucky started whittling into the lead in the closing minutes, and a 3-pointer by Crook made it 59-55 with 25.4 seconds left on the clock.

But the Jayhawks got the ball in the hands of Naadir Tharpe, and he made two free throws to provide them a cushion. Price misfired from beyond the arc, and Brandon Harris was long on another 3-pointer from the corner, as McLemore added two more foul shots to seal the Jayhawks’ victory.

Western softball defeats Lincoln, Emporia in non-conference play

MWSUThe Missouri Western softball team picked up two victories Friday evening, defeating Lincoln University 8-3 just before the Griffons defeated 2012 MIAA Champions Emporia State 4-2. The Griffons, who were scheduled to play in the MIAA-NSIC this weekend, move to 18-8 on the season.

After weather prevented most teams from making it to St. Joseph for the crossover tournament, the Griffons were able to schedule two games, one against Lincoln and one against Emporia State.

Missouri Western 8, Lincoln 3

In the first game, the Griffons came back after a solo home run from Lincoln pitcher Starr McLeod to win the game.

McLeod’s homer marked the score 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second. Keri Lorbert tied the game after her own solo home run in the bottom of the second, however.

After going down 2-1 in the third, the Griffons used a five-run third inning to take a commanding lead. Pitcher Janie Smith, who picked up her ninth win, singled to left field before Sarah Elliott’s sac bunt put a runner on second. After Bre Fleschner reached on an error by the first baseman, Tiffany Gillaspy tripled to right field, scoring two runs. Gillaspy eventually scored before Michelle Stevenson homered to center field to complete the inning.

The Griffons added runs in the fifth and sixth innings and gave up a run in the seventh to take the 8-3 victory.

Missouri Western 4, Emporia State 2

In a tightly-played game, the Griffons took the win thanks to a strong fourth inning.

No team scored in the first three innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, the Griffons began to take the game away from the Hornets. Gillaspy was walked, and soon after Lorbert singled to center field Kendall Sorensen added a double to score Gillaspy. Maegan Roemmich and Taylor Anding both singled after that to score two more runs to mark the game 3-0.

Emporia came back and put together consecutive doubles to collect two runs in the sixth inning. But the Griffons came back and added another run to up the lead to 4-2. Roemmich doubled to right center to score Brooke Schaben, who was pitch running for Lorbert.

In the seventh inning, the Hornets nearly nailed a two-run homer from Andrea Piezuch, who had two hits on the day. Sorensen caught the ball right near the fence, however, to end the game. Jackie Bishop pitched all seven innings and picked up her ninth win of the season.

Seven Missouri Western batters had two hits or more on the day. The Griffons continue action tomorrow morning at the Griffons Spring Sports Complex Missouri Western Softball Field. They play a doubleheader against Northern State, which starts at 11 a.m.

Kansas State gets upset by LaSalle in NCAA opener

KSUJohn Giannini kept calling timeouts as La Salle’s big lead kept slipping away, an 18-point halftime advantage wiped out by fourth-ranked Kansas State’s frantic comeback.

The coach’s message every time was simple: Keep playing defense.

The Explorers finally answered his challenge.

Jerrell Wright made three foul shots in the final 30 seconds, and the No. 13 seed from the Atlantic 10 buckled down on defense in the closing minutes, allowing the Explorers to polish off a 63-61 upset win Friday in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

”Every timeout, every time we came in, he was riding us on defense,” said Ramon Galloway, who finished with 19 points for La Salle. ”We had a good margin, and they came back and actually took the lead. We had to stick together, dig down deep and get some stops.”

The Wildcats trailed 44-26 at halftime, but didn’t make another field goal after Jordan Henriquez’s layup with 4:54 remaining in the game. In fact, Kansas State only managed one more point – a free throw by the 7-footer with 2:25 left on the clock – the rest of the way.

That gave the Explorers (22-9) the window they needed.

Wright, who scored a game-high 21 points, made his first two clutch free throws to give La Salle a 62-61 lead with 30 seconds left. Henriquez missed in the paint at the other end, and then Wright made the first of two more foul shots with 9.6 seconds to go.

The Wildcats (27-8) raced down court, looking for a tying basket, but guard Angel Rodriguez got hung up in the corner near the Kansas State bench. His off-balance shot over the corner of the backboard missed everything, deflating a partisan crowd that packed the Sprint Center.

”They made the plays down the stretch and we didn’t,” said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber, who let his guys freelance on the final possession rather than calling a designed play.

Weber said he tried to call a timeout with Rodriguez boxed in, but the referees didn’t hear him with the crowd roaring.

”I guess it’s my fault,” he said. ”I waited too long.”

Sam Mills was credited with shutting down Rodriguez on the game’s final possession.

The junior guard also had 10 points for La Salle, which beat Boise State in one of the First Four games Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio, caught a late plane to Kansas City and has now won two games in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1955.

”We’re not playing with house money. That’s not at all how we’d every think,” said Giannini, whose program hadn’t even been to the NCAA tournament since 1992. ”We want to win every game.”

The next one will come against No. 12 seed Mississippi, which knocked off fifth-seeded Wisconsin 57-46 earlier in the day in a suddenly shredded West Region.

”We don’t have a chance to be tired or sore,” Galloway said. ”We’re ready for our chance.”

Henriquez and Shane Southwell scored 17 points each for Kansas State, which managed to climb back in the game in the second half by holding La Salle to 3-for-18 shooting after the break.

Senior guard Rodney McGruder, the Wildcats’ leading scorer, finished with 12 points.

”It’s the worst feeling in the world,” he said. ”It’s the last time I’ll play a game in the K-State uniform, and the last time I’ll be on a team with some of the teammates I have now. It just hurts to go out the way we did.”

Giannini was worried his team would be weary after beating Boise State two days ago, so his guys hardly practiced Thursday. They made up for it by putting up extra shots before the game, remaining on the court when Kansas State headed to the locker room for final instructions.

Evidently, they got into quite the rhythm.

Galloway hit the first of his three first-half 3-pointers on La Salle’s opening possession, and he was followed in quick succession by Mills and Tyreek Duren, whose own shots from beyond the arc effectively silenced a crowd that came dressed mostly in purple and white.

Weber kept calling timeouts to implore his team to settle down, but nothing seemed to stick.

The Explorers pushed their lead to 35-16 late in the first half, and even when the Wildcats made back-to-back baskets – and their subdued fans started to stir – La Salle’s veteran backcourt was there to answer with a slicing layup or a fall-away jumper.

La Salle shot 58 percent and committed two turnovers in building a 44-26 halftime lead, while the Wildcats went 1 for 8 from beyond the arc and turned it over seven times.

Everything turned in the second half.

Those open 3-pointers the Explorers had been pouring in were replaced with brick shots and air balls, their weary legs starting to show. And those lousy passes and missed layups by Kansas State were replaced with crisp feeds for open looks around the basket.

Henriquez, the Wildcats’ 7-footer, started to take advantage of a 6-inch advantage in the paint, scoring six points during their 20-5 run to open the half. When he checked out, bruising post player Thomas Gipson kept the pressure on, demoralizing the smaller Explorers.

”As good as we were in the first half, Kansas State was that good in the second half,” Giannini said. ”They were terrific in the second half.”

Gipson’s basket in the paint drew Kansas State within 56-55, and then a put-back by McGruder gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game with 7:10 remaining.

Wright’s two foul shots with just over 4 minutes left in the game knotted it 60-all, and Henriquez’s free throw with 2:25 remaining gave Kansas State the lead. But McGruder missed a closely guarded jumper on the Wildcats’ next trip, and then rattled out a 3-pointer.

The Explorers’ defense helped them finish off a memorable upset.

”It came down to individual battles,” Giannini said, ”and our guys stepped up.”

Northwest softball takes two from Northern State

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State softball team hosted Northern State at Bearcat Field Friday and combined for a two game total of 38 runs as the Bearcats took the first game 4-1 and game two 17-16 in extra innings.

Northern State took an early lead as they plated one run in the top of the first inning of game one. The Bearcats were held scoreless by Wolves starter, Smesmo, until the third inning.

Rachel Schmitz led the inning off with a walk followed by a Jordan Ereth double to put runners at second and third. Candace Miller hit a double to left field to score Schmitz and move Ereth to third.

Stephanie Price then laid down a bunt and beat it out to load the bases for Kristen Uthe. Uthe smacked a bases clearing double to left center field to put Northwest up 4-1.

Smesmo settled in for the Wolves and did not allow another run. However it was the Bearcats starter who earned the upper hand as Jenna Creger also fell into a groove in the circle not allowing any hits after the first inning.

Creger set down 18 consecutive batters in order on her way to her seventh victory of the season. The senior pitcher collected seven strikeouts as the Bearcats claimed a 4-1 victory.

Game two was an offensive slugfest that consisted of six home runs, three doubles, a triple and 17 runners left on base.

Northern State scored two runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the third. Northwest was able to run across five runs in the first, six runs in the second and four more runs in the third to go up 15-4.

The Wolves battled back scoring two runs in the fourth, six runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth while the Bearcats were added one run in the fourth inning. The Wolves had come back from an 11 run deficit to tie the game at 16 and push it into extra innings.

International tie-breaker rules were in effect in the eighth inning and NSU ended up stranding a runner on third.

In the bottom half of the inning Kylie Cantrell was placed on second base and moved to third on a Rachel Schmitz sacrifice bunt. Ereth proceeded to hit a walk-off single up the middle to end the game as Northwest claimed a 17-16 win.

Hailee Hendricks, Stephanie Price and Cantrell all hit home runs for the Bearcats. Kristine Labertew and Hendricks combined to finish 5-for-8 with six RBIs and four runs scored.

Abbie Vitosh was the starting pitcher for Northwest but got a no-decision. Morgan Brunmeier picked up her first win of the season with 4.1 innings of work.

The Bearcats will be back on the road to take on Pittsburg State March 29 for a double-header at 3 p.m. Northwest will continue its road swing the following day at Missouri Southern in a twin bill starting at noon.

Mizzou’s season ends with NCAA Tournament loss to Colorado State

MUDorian Green scored 17 of his 26 points in the first half and eighth-seeded Colorado State used good shooting and great rebounding to run away from No. 9 Missouri 84-72 Thursday night in the NCAA tournament.

Green, who went scoreless with five turnovers in last year’s second-round upset to Murray State, did much better this time as the Rams shot nearly 58 percent in the first half.

Minnesota transfer and Rams big man Colton Iverson outrebounded Missouri by himself through 27 minutes and finished with 13 boards.

First-year Rams coach Larry Eustachy earned the victory with his fourth tournament team, but the road gets tougher as they advance to face top-seeded Louisville in Saturday’s third-round Midwest Regional game at Rupp Arena.

Phil Pressey’s 20 points led the Tigers (23-11).

Greg Smith and Jon Octeus each added 12 points while Wes Eikmeier added 11 for Colorado State (26-8), which was rarely threatened by Missouri.

The lopsided outcome was surprising considering the teams’ similarities that made this an intriguing matchup.

Besides balanced offenses with at least four starters averaging in double figures, Colorado State and Missouri also have thrived on the glass. The Rams entered the game with a rebound margin of 12.1 per game, tops in the nation, with the Tigers third at 9.6.

Iverson averaged 14.7 points per game to key Colorado State’s return to the tournament along with Eustachy, who led Southern Mississippi here last year. The 6-foot-10 senior has been helped by Eikmeier (12.7 points) and Green (12.8 points) and Smith (11.1).

Missouri meanwhile featured one of the field’s most balanced offenses, with Laurence Bowers (14.4 points) leading five starters averaging at least 11 points per game. Pressey has been one of the Tigers’ most interesting stories, a talented guard who has tended to make mistakes in key moments.

That made for an entertaining first half that Colorado State led 47-38 by setting the offensive pace before falling into an end-to-end game more to Missouri’s liking.

The Rams shot 15 of 26 (58 percent) in the first half and seemed primed to run away from the Tigers. Green was 3 for 3 from beyond the arc.

Missouri was 15 of 30 in the first 20 minutes with four 3-pointers.

Missouri closed to 49-45 early in the second half, but the Rams responded with a 17-4 surge for their biggest lead at 66-49 lead.
