Griffons use big innings to defeat Bearcats; win streak now at 16

MWSUThe Missouri Western baseball team used a five run inning in both game one two helping them come away with two more victories by scores of 10-4 and 7-2 against Northwest Missouri State Tuesday afternoon. The Griffons have won 16 games in a row improving to 17-3 overall and 12-0 in MIAA play.

Game 1
MWSU 10, NWMSU 4

The Griffons opened up game one with a flurry hitting two home run in the first inning guiding MWSU to a 5-0 lead after a half an inning. Bubba Dotson hit his fifth homer of the year while Grant Fink smacked his eighth giving MWSU the 4-0 lead. With two outs Jimmy Smelcer hit a single and later scored on a Jake Schrader single to center field.

The Griffons continued the scoring a run in the second and one in the third taking a 7-0 lead before the Bearcats got on the board. Northwest got on the board in the bottom of the third when Steven Garber hit a homer to right field giving cuting the Griffon lead to 7-1.

In the fifth Spencer Shockley opened the inningn with a walk and later scored on a Smelcer single getting back the run the Bearcats scored in the third giving MWSU the 8-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth the Griffon pitchers stuggled finding the strike zone as Northwest scored three runs cutting the lead to 8-4 after five innings.

MWSU answered once again in the sixth scoring two more runs on three hits which included Dotson scoring on a Shockley double. The rest of the game belonged to Mark Spreckels as he pitched 2.1 innings givng up zero hits while striking out two.

Smelcer led the charge with three hits while Dotson, Nate Ramler and Shawn Egge all had two. Oliver Kadey picked up the victory going four innings giving up three hits and four earned runs. He improves to 4-0 with the victory.

Northwest had just three hits in the game. Blane Reutter picked up the loss going one inning giving up six hits and five earned runs. He falls to 1-3 with the loss.

Game 2
MWSU 7, NWMSU 2

In game two the Griffons scored five runs in the fourth inning and got a strong pitching performance from Jerad Hawkins getting the 7-2 victory. Hawkins improves to 2-0 going seven innings giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out three. Kyle Kelly pitched two innings giving up two hits with two strikeouts.

The Griffons struck first once again in the game two in the top of the first when Michael Schulze singled and scored on a Kyle Simpson single to center field.

The score stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the second when NWMSU scratched a run across tying the score at one.

In the top of the fourth Simpson led off with a double and then with two outs Fink hit his ninth homer of the season giving MWSU the 3-1 lead. From there Smelcer singled, Schrader doubled, Egge doubled and Schulze single scoring three more runs giving MWSU the 6-1 lead after four and a half.

In the sixth Schrader singled to center and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Dotson giving MWSU the 7-1 lead. The Bearcats got one more but fall to 6-16 overall and 4-13 in MIAA play.

The Griffons had 14 hits with Schulze and Simpson both getting three hits. Fink, Smelcer and Schrader all had two hits.

The Bearcats had eight hits with Garber going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Austin Warren falls to 1-3 going six innings giving up 12 hits and seven earned runs while striking out eight.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, March 23 when they host the Central Oklahoma Bronchos in an MIAA doubleheader. Game times are set for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm from the Griffon Baseball Field at the Spring Sports Complex.

Missouri Western softball sweeps Northwest Tuesday

MWSUThe Missouri Western softball team won two hard fought MIAA road games against rival Northwest Missouri State University on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 2-1 in eight innings in game one and 6-4 in game two. Missouri Western improves to 16-8 overall and 4-2 in MIAA play.

Game 1
MWSU 2, NWMSU 1 (8 innings)

In game one the Griffons and the Bearcats played a very close one run ball game with MWSU prevailing 2-1 in eight innings. The Griffons got the first run in the top of the second inning when Maegan Roemmich nailed her third homer of the season giving MWSU the 1-0 lead.

The lead remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Northwest Missouri State strung together three consecutive hits tying the score at one after four. The Griffons got runners on in the sixth and seventh but could not scratch anything across until the eighth inning.

In the eighth Kendall Sorensen got on by an error, advanced to second on a Roemmich walk and then scored the game winning run on a Taylor Anding single to right field.

After giving up a single to lead off the bottom of the eighth MWSU pitcher Jackie Bishop struck out the next three innings picking up 8th victory of the season. Bishop struckout a season high 14 batters in game one giving up just four hits and one earned run.

The Griffons had seven hits with Anding going 3-for-4 while Bre Fleschner had two hits.

Jenna Creger falls to 6-3 going eight innings walking seven and striking out seven. Four different Bearcats had hits in the contest.

Game 2
MWSU 6, NWMSU 4

In game two the Bearcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after three innings of play. In the fourth Keri Lorbert led off the inning with a walk and then Sorensen hit her second homer of the season tying the score at two after four innings of play.

The Griffons took the lead in the fifth when Fleschner hit a change up over the right field fence giving MWSU the 3-2 lead. The homer was the 3rd of the season for Fleschner.

In the bottom half of the fifth the Bearcats scored one run on two hits tying the score at three. Once again MWSU responded to score two runs in the top of the sixth. Michelle Stevenson doubled to right center and advanced to second when Sorensen got hit by a pitch. The bases went full on a Roemmich single to left field and then Stevenson scored on an Anding walk. MWSU scored their second run of the inning on a field choice by Sarah Elliott.

The Bearcats cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when lead off hitter Kylie Cantrell hit a homer over the left field fence. The Griffons responded in the top of the 7th when Lorbert walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a double steal with Stevenson.

Bishop shut down the Bearcats in the seventh picking up two strikeouts and her second save of the season. The Griffons had nine hits with Stevenson and Sorensen each going 2-for-3. Janie Smith improves to 8-3 overall going 4.1 innings giving up six hits and three earned runs.

Northwest had nine hits with Stephanie Price going 3-for-4. Abbie Vitosh went 5.1 innings giving up five hits and four earned runs. Paige Blythe picked up the loss falling to 2-2 going one inning giving up four hits. The Bearcats fall to 13-7 overall and 3-3 in MIAA play.

The Griffons return to action on Friday, March 22 with two games in the MWSU Invitational in St. Joseph, Mo. The Griffons take on Augustana and Concordia-St. Paul at 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm from the Griffons Softball Field at the Spring Sports Complex.

Northwest to hold press conference Tuesday for ‘exciting development’

riggertNorthwestNorthwest Missouri State University will announce an exciting development within its Department of Athletics during a news conference at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the foyer of the Lamkin Activity Center.

The announcement, which is open to the public, will be broadcast via a live video web stream on the Northwest website at www.nwmissouri.edu/live. Western baseball moves up to No. 3 in NCBWA Central Region poll

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western State University baseball team moved up to 3rd in the latest 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Top 10 Poll released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Monday (Mar. 18).

The Griffons have moved up from 6th to 3rd in Monday’s poll. Central Missouri received all eight first-place votes and 80 points in the poll, followed by by St. Cloud State (72), Missouri Western (55), Southern Arkansas (54) and Arkansas Tech (52).

Positions six through 10 went to Minnesota State (47), Central Oklahoma (29), Mary (16), Henderson State (12), Harding (6) and Pitt State (6).

The Griffons, under head coach Charles Verduzco, are 15-3 overall and 10-0 in the MIAA. Missouri Western, is currently on a 14 game winning streak and sit atop the MIAA standings after winning five MIAA games last week.

The Central Region includes the MIAA, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Great American Conference.

Three Tigers earn All-SEC honors from the Associated Press

riggertMizzouThree Missouri Tigers were honored on the Associated Press All-SEC Team on Monday as junior Phil Pressey was named a Second Team selection and seniors Laurence Bowers and Alex Oriakhi earned Honorable Mention.

The Tigers open NCAA Tournament play as a No. 9 seed vs. No. 8-seeded Colorado State on Thursday night (8:20 p.m. CT) in Lexington, Ky., as Mizzou makes its second trip to Rupp Arena this season.

Pressey leads the SEC in assists and put on a show during his first trip to Lexington this year. The Dallas native scored a career high 27 points and dished 10 assists as the Tigers dropped an overtime heartbreaker to the Wildcats.

Bowers has been outstanding since returning from a mid-season injury and finished the year leading the Tigers in scoring (14.4 ppg). Bowers averaged career highs in points and rebounding (6.2) and earned Second Team All-SEC honors from the league coaches last week.

Oriakhi ranks among the national leaders in field goal percentage (.629) and was near perfect from the floor at last week’s SEC Tournament, hitting 13-of-14 shots in games vs. Texas A&M and Ole Miss. Oriakhi recorded his 11th double-double of the year vs. Texas A&M and narrowly missed his 12th with 16 points and nine boards vs. the Rebels. Over his last seven games Oriakhi is averaging 13.9 points and 8.7 rebounds, while shooting 77 percent from the floor.

KU’s Withey, McLemore named to the USBWA All-America 2nd Team

riggertKUKansas senior C Jeff Withey and redshirt freshman G Ben McLemore have been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America Second Team, the USBWA announced Monday.

This marks the fifth-straight season Kansas has been represented on the USBWA All-America teams. Additionally, this is the fifth time two Jayhawks have appeared on the squad.

Named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 Big 12 Championship where he averaged 13.3 point and 6.3 rebounds, Withey has 12 double-doubles this season, which rank second in the Big 12. A three-time Big 12 Player of the Week in 2012-13, Withey, from San Diego, Calif., averages 13.6 points per game and a team-high 8.4 rebounds. His 129 blocked shots in 2012-13 are second-most in school history and are 11 shy of his single-season record of 140 set last year. A two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Withey is KU’s and the Big 12’s all-time shot blocking leader with 294 blocks heading into the NCAA Tournament.

An All-Big 12 First Team selection along with Withey, McLemore leads Kansas in scoring at 16.4 points per game this season, which is tops among conference freshmen and second overall in the Big 12. The St. Louis, Mo., native has 10 games of 20 points or more including three 30-plus scoring efforts. His 556 points in 2012-13 are a Kansas freshman record, surpassing KU legend Danny Manning’s 496 set in 1985. McLemore leads the Big 12 in free throw percentage at 86.7 percent.

No. 1 seed Kansas (29-5) will take on No. 16 seed Western Kentucky (20-15) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday, at 8:50 p.m. (Central) at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Northwest men’s tennis defeats Missouri Valley, 9-0

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State men’s tennis team won in convincing fashion to run its winning streak to five with a 9-0 victory over Missouri Valley College Monday afternoon.

The No. 25 Bearcats battled windy conditions at Frank Grube Courts improving to 6-1 on the season. The match comes as a final tune-up before Northwest embarks on a spring break trip through Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas starting on Friday.

Lluis Altimires and Sergio De Vilchez started the Bearcats off with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles after Dylan Bernatzky and Jason Harris claimed an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Harris continued his impressive singles play with a, 6-2, 6-1 win over Jason Hadley. Harris improved to 7-0 on the year and is 8-2 including action during the fall season.

Altimires and De Vilchez also imposed their will at No. 3 and No. 1 singles. Altimires cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory as the 38th-ranked De Vilchez won at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-1.

Impending cooler weather has slightly altered the upcoming Bearcat men’s tennis schedule moving Thursday’s match against Southern Indiana to the indoor complex at Red Oak, Iowa. Thursday’s match starts a streak of six matches in six days for the Bearcats.

Missouri State fires women’s basketball coach

riggertMissouriStateMissouri State University announced Monday that Nyla Milleson’s contract has been cancelled, and she will not return as head women’s basketball coach. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Kyle Moats during an afternoon news conference at JQH Arena.

Moats said the University would move promptly to hire a new coach.

“We evaluate all of our coaches at the conclusion of each season and monitor several criteria during the year,” said Moats. “Based on my overview of these factors, I consulted with President (Clif) Smart over the weekend, and gave him my recommendation to make a change in the leadership of the Lady Bears program.”

“Our past successes have led to high expectations,” said Smart. “The challenge for Missouri State is to continue to live up to those expectations. Sometimes, that means we have to make difficult, but necessary, decisions. Such is the case today.”

Milleson will receive a $140,000 buyout for the remaining two years of her contract.

Senior Associate Athletics Director Casey Hunt will oversee day-to-day duties of the program until a new head coach has been named.

“I want to say from a personal and professional standpoint, that I greatly appreciate Nyla’s dedication and hard work during her tenure as head coach at Missouri State,” Moats added. “She is a class individual who has always respected the history and tradition of Lady Bears Basketball. On behalf of all of us, I wish Nyla and her family the best in the future.”

Milleson coached the Lady Bears to a 105-87 record in six seasons, including three WNIT appearances and the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship. Missouri State finished 14-17 this season with a 6-12 record in MVC play.

“I’m grateful to have had this opportunity, and I appreciate the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and staff through the years,” said Milleson. “I wish the program and those associated with it continued success in the future.”

Kansas gets the No. 1 seed in the South; will play Western Kentucky

riggertKUOn the cusp of claiming the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship title and earning its ninth-straight Big 12 Conference regular-season championship, No. 7/6-ranked Kansas was tabbed as the No. 1 seed in the South Region of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the second seed overall, as determined by the tournament selection committee Sunday. The Jayhawks will be making their 24th-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, the longest-current streak in the nation, and will take on Sun Belt Conference Tournament champion Western Kentucky Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Jayhawks, the 2012 national runners-up, are making their 42nd NCAA Tournament appearance and are a No. 1 seed for the 11th time since seeding began in 1979. The Jayhawks were a No. 1 seed in 1986, 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Kansas boasts a 29-5 record this season under head coach Bill Self, including a league-best 14-4 mark in the Big 12 Conference. KU has won 10 of its last 11 games.

The Jayhawks are led by four seniors and freshman Ben McLemore. Two-time Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player Jeff Withey and McLemore each received first team all-league honors. McLemore leads the squad with 16.4 points per game, while Withey is posting 13.6 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per contest. KU’s all-time leading shot blocker also has 129 swats this season to rank No. 3 nationally. Seniors Travis Releford (11.5 ppg.), Elijah Johnson (10.1 ppg.) and Kevin Young (7.6 ppg.) round out the starting five for KU. Johnson owns a team-best 163 assists, while Releford leads the team with 42 steals.

Western Kentucky entered the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed, after posting a 20-15 overall record and a 10-10 mark in league play, but claimed its second-straight league tournament title. This will mark the 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hilltoppers, including four in the last six seasons. WKU has also posted four combined NCAA Tournament wins in its last three appearances with at least one win each trip.

WKU sophomore guard T.J. Price, a 2013 Second Team All-Sun Belt selection, leads the Hilltoppers in scoring with 15.3 points per game and 79 made three-pointers. George Fant (12.9) and Jamal Crook (12.0) also average double-digit points for Western Kentucky, which averages 67.2 points per game as a team.

KU and WKU have met four previous times, twice in the NCAA Tournament. Kansas owns a 3-1 all-time series record against the Hilltoppers including a 75-62 victory in Allen Fieldhouse in the Preseason NIT to open the 1997-98 season. The Jayhawks also defeated WKU, 75-70, in Dayton, Ohio at the 1995 NCAA Midwest Regional. WKU claimed a 77-75 win in the 1971 NCAA Consolation game, while KU won the first game in the series, 104-81, during the 1969-70 season in Lawrence.

The winner of the Kansas-Western Kentucky game will face the victor of the No. 8 North Carolina – No. 9 Villanova contest on Sunday.
