Mizzou football season ticket prices set for 2013

With the start of 2013 spring football less than a month away (first practice is set for March 12th), the University of Missouri Department of Athletics has finalized season ticket prices for the upcoming 2013 season – MU’s second in the Southeastern Conference.

Mizzou will play one of the top home schedules in the SEC in 2013.  The home slate includes five bowl teams from a year ago, with four of those winning 10 or more games, including Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M (each went 11-2), while Arkansas State was 10-3 in 2012.  Toledo went 9-4 a year ago as well.  Texas A&M features the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in QB Johnny Manziel, and he will be the first defending Heisman winner to set foot on Faurot Field since Billy Sims of Oklahoma in 1979.

General public season ticket prices will remain at the 2012 rate of $379, as will student tickets ($240 for football/basketball combo pack, $160 for football-only).  Last season, when Mizzou sold out its season ticket allotment for the first time ever, those two core groups comprised nearly 70 percent of season ticket purchases (32,701 of 46,786 total in 2012).

“We’re very pleased to hold our season ticket prices steady for the vast majority of our customers,” said Deputy Athletic Director Doug Gillin.  “Football ticket revenue is such a vital component of our budget, yet we have to be sensitive to the challenges the economy has presented for so many people.  Overall, it is very important to offer an exciting schedule at a reasonable price for our fans, and we feel we continue to do that here,” he said.

riggertMizzouOf course, there are many different affordable seating plans available for all Tiger fans.  Prices for other areas in 2013 include Tiger Zone, located in the south stands ($288), and the popular Family Fun Pass ($750), which includes five season tickets in a special section.

Faculty/staff and young alumni (the previous three graduating classes) will be $288 this season which represents a slight increase from 2012 prices, but is still a 25 percent discount from the general public rate.  Additionally, faculty/staff receive a special benefit with a 50 percent discount with the Tiger Scholarship Fund – meaning a TSF donation of $100 is credited as $200.

Other section prices include $800 for Touchdown Terrace seating, and $500 for Tiger Lounge and Suites.

Current season ticket holders will receive ordering information in the mail in early March.  Those interested in becoming new season ticket holders, can get their names added to a request list in March.

No. 9 Kansas wins at No. 14 Oklahoma State in 2 OTs

KUNaadir Tharpe connected on a short jumper in the lane with 16.5 seconds left in the second overtime, lifting No. 9 Kansas to a 68-67 win over No. 14 Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.

Travis Releford scored 18 points and Jeff Withey had three double-overtime free throws among his 17 points for the Jayhawks (22-4, 10-4 Big 12), who are tied with No. 13 Kansas State for the conference lead with five games to go. Kansas has had at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title for each of the past eight years, but that streak was in jeopardy against the surging Cowboys.

Markel Brown scored 20 points to lead Oklahoma State (19-6, 9-4), which had won seven straight – including snapping the Jayhawks’ 33-game home winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse earlier this month.

Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State’s star freshman, had 16 points but fouled out midway through the second extra period when he slammed into Releford after going airborne on a drive to the basket.

On the winning play, Tharpe isolated against Phil Forte and wiggled his way into the lane before popping in a jumper from the right side. Brown missed a jumper from the left wing with about 7 seconds left, and Releford dove along the sideline in front of Oklahoma State’s bench to prevent the rebound from going out of bounds and instead let the final seconds tick off the clock.

Neither team led by more than six during the classic with championship implications, and both had their chances to win it at the end of regulation and each overtime.

Defense ruled the day, with the Jayhawks escaping on their only field goal in either overtime period. Kansas missed its other seven attempts from the field, but used the nation’s best defense to limit Oklahoma State to a season-low 32.8 percent.

With so many misses, naturally, each team’s star freshman had his share.

Ben McLemore, on pace to replace Danny Manning as the highest-scoring freshman in Kansas history, misfired on his first eight shots before making three in a row in the second half. He had a season-low seven points.

Smart started out 0 for 9 before finally hitting a fallaway jumper along the right side of the lane to cut Oklahoma State’s deficit to 53-51 with 3:20 left in regulation. Forte tied it soon after, making a pair of free throws after coming up with a steal.

Smart came out of the game once after hurting his right shoulder and again after tweaking his right ankle in the first half. He then got socked in the face by Withey early in the second half. But it wasn’t until he got his fifth foul that he finally couldn’t return.

Elijah Johnson missed a pair of free throws with the chance to put Kansas up by five in the first overtime, only to have Brown return the favor on the Cowboys’ end. But Johnson fouled out in the scramble for the rebound, and Brown then made both his attempts to draw Oklahoma State within 61-60 with 2:35 remaining.

After two free throws by Releford, Oklahoma State’s Forte drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 56.4 seconds left to tie it at 63. The game went to a second overtime after McLemore air-balled a 3-pointer, Smart came up empty on a drive and Releford missed a driving attempt for Kansas. Smart’s desperation shot from three-quarters court grazed the front of the rim.

The Jayhawks weren’t able to close it out in regulation after Releford banked in a tricky scoop shot underneath for a 57-53 lead with 1:49 to play. Smart made one of two free throws at the opposite end and, after Withey missed inside for Kansas, he got out in transition for a 3-pointer to tie it with 1:11 to play.

Johnson crossed over Smart on a drive, getting him to fall down in the lane, but Michael Cobbins came over to the rescue and swatted Johnson’s shot into the hands of coach Bill Self on the Jayhawks’ bench. Brian Williams knocked the ball away from Tharpe to give OSU a chance at the win, but Smart missed a wild, off-balance jumper from the right wing and time ran out with the game tied at 57.

Former Wildcat Coleman named KSU wide receivers coach

KSUFormer K-State standout Andre Coleman, who has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Youngstown State, will return to his alma mater to tutor the Wildcat wide receivers, head coach Bill Snyder announced today.

A four-year letterwinner at wide receiver under Snyder from 1990-93, Coleman spent the last three seasons on head coach and former K-State offensive lineman Eric Wolford’s staff. Coleman, who went on to have a successful five-year career in the NFL as a player, also became the first Wildcat football player to score a touchdown in a Super Bowl.

“We are pleased to have Andre join our staff,” Snyder said. “As a successful ex-player from our program he has a strong understanding and belief in the philosophy and intrinsic values we believe in.  Having worked with Eric Wolford, also an ex-Kansas State player, Andre has experience coaching in a program with a very similar approach to ours.  He is a caring person who works well with young men and fits in well with our coaching staff.”

In 2011 and 2012, Coleman worked with no seniors and only one junior as he coached multiple freshmen and sophomores who were called into action early in their careers to the tune of 109 total receptions by underclassmen. He helped YSU post a 7-4 record, including a 31-17 victory at Pittsburgh, which served as the school’s first-ever victory over a BCS opponent.

During his first season as the receivers coach in 2011, Coleman guided a group that caught 22 of a school-record 27 touchdown passes, while the Penguins’ 227.5 passing yards per game were the second most in school history and the highest since 1972. Christian Bryan set school freshman records under Coleman’s watch in receptions (46) and yards (722), while his yardage total was the most by a freshman at the FCS level that season. Coaching the tight ends in his first season on the staff in 2010, Coleman’s group hauled in 17 receptions and two touchdowns, helping YSU’s offense set a then-school record at 412 offensive yards per game.

A 1993 All-America and All-Big Eight performer, Coleman left his mark at K-State during his four years by accumulating 3,443 all-purpose yards, including 1,556 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 95 receptions and 1,458 kickoff-return yards on 60 returns. He still sits in K-State’s top 10 in 13 offensive or return categories, including top marks in both single-game all-purpose yards per play (27.0 vs. Missouri in 1993) and career all-purpose yards per play (18.2), and a second-place ranking in both career kickoff-return attempt and yards.

The Hermitage, Pa., product was drafted in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft by San Diego and put together a solid five-year professional career playing for the Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers. A two-time Pro Bowler and 1994 NFL All-Rookie squad honoree, Coleman helped the Chargers win the 1994 AFC Championship and earn a trip to Super Bowl XXIX in which he established eight Super Bowl records at the time, including a then-record 98-yard kickoff return touchdown.
