MERRIAM, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a 9-year-old boy has accidentally shot his 10-year-old sister in the leg in suburban Kansas City.

Police in Merriam, Kansas, said in a news release that the shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday after the gun was left unattended. Police say the girl’s wound wasn’t life threatening. She was taken to a hospital.

No one has been arrested. The shooting remains under investigation.

Police urged gun owners to properly secure their firearms in the news release.

MCDONALD COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Monday in McDonald County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Dodge Neon driven by Billy D. Penn, 26, California, was northbound on Route E five miles south of Powell.

The vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a 2006 GMC Sierra driven by Carrie S. Searcy, 57, Pineville, head-on. Penn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Searcy was transported to Mercy Hospital. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The developer of the Keystone XL oil pipeline says it plans to start construction next year, after the U.S. State Department concluded major environmental damage from a leak is unlikely and could quickly be mitigated.

TransCanada spokesman Matthew John said Monday that the company remains committed to moving ahead with the project following years of reviews from federal and state regulators.

But the report issued Friday from the Trump administration’s State Department drew sharp criticism from environmental groups. They say they’ll continue to fight the project they view as an environmental threat.

The report says the pipeline would have a “negligible to moderate” environmental impact under its normal operations, and continuous monitoring and the company’s response plan would mitigate the effects of any spill.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A former Kansas priest still holds medical licenses in Kansas and Missouri despite being defrocked this year after Archdiocese of Kansas City leaders determined that he abused three minors decades ago.

The Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts is investigating the allegations against 71-year-old John Wisner, who remains a licensed psychiatrist in both states. The Kansas board declined to comment on whether it was looking into Wisner’s case.

Wisner declined to comment on the allegations or the investigation. It’s unclear if he’s still practicing medicine.

Patrick Wall is a former Catholic priest who works as an investigator for a law firm that represents sexual abuse victims. Wall says the Kansas archdiocese should’ve reported Wisner to licensing boards when it learned of the allegations six years ago.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Police have ruled that a woman found dead inside a vehicle after a police chase died of injuries suffered in the head-on collision that ended the pursuit.

Police on Monday disclosed the cause of death of 29-year-old Chrissy Saale. Her body was found early Thursday on Interstate 70 in Kansas City, Kansas. She was a passenger. The driver, 24-year-old Collan Leigh Cross faces several charges.

The chase began when police followed a car onto a dead end street before the driver struck a police car and drove off, crossing into Missouri before returning to Kansas.

The car eventually drove the wrong way on the interstate and collided with another car.

The other driver had minor injuries.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say a man found naked last month underneath a desk at a Missouri park office is now accused of stealing a work truck at another park and shedding his clothes.

50-year-old Peter Gilbreth, of Joplin, is charged with tampering with a motor vehicle and sexual misconduct in last Wednesday’s incident at Ritter Springs Park in Greene County. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

CHRISTIAN COUNTY — One person died in an accident just after 11p.m. Sunday in Christian County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 GMC Envoy driven by Chad M. Anderson, 46, Ozark, was northbound on M Highway at Inman Road just south of Nixa.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle when it ran off the road and hit a sign and a tree.

Anderson was transported to Cox South Hospital where he died. The MSHP did not have details on the driver’s seat belt usage.

LINN COUNTY — A child was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Sunday in Linn County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Kia Sorento driven by Rebecca L. Snelson, 65, Prescott, was turning southbound in the 300 Block of Main Street into an alleyway.

The SUV struck 3-year-old Jilliann Q. Foxworth of Prescott who was attempting to cross the alley.

The child was transported to Children’s Mercy North in Kansas City. Authorities released no additional details.
