TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A black man alleges in a lawsuit that his face was bloodied and his jaw broken in a police beating in Topeka.

35-year-old Timothy Harris sued Wednesday in federal court. The suit says Harris’ constitutional rights were violated in January after an officer approached him as he was sitting in his car. Harris says he was cooperative but that the officer detained him without explanation. The suit alleges that the officer took Harris to the ground, punched him and used pepper spray.

Harris was convicted of parallel parking too far away from the curb and interference with a law enforcement officer. A battery against a law enforcement officer charge was dismissed.

A city spokeswoman says the city doesn’t comment on potential litigation.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — State health officials say the first West Nile death in Missouri this year was in Jackson County, not St. Louis.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said Wednesday it mistakenly reported last week that the first West Nile death this year was in the eastern area of the state.

Director Randall Williams said miscommunication within the department’s chain of command caused the error. He says changes are being made to prevent it from happening again.

The person who died in Jackson County contracted the illness in August.

BOONESBORO, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say two people have been killed and two others hurt in a head-on crash in mid-Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that the crash happened Tuesday afternoon when an 18-year-old driver crossed the center line of a state highway in Howard County.

The 18-year-old’s Dodge Neon then collided with a Ford Fusion, killing the Fusion’s driver, 75-year-old Kenneth Huddle, of Keytesville. The patrol says the crash also killed a 17-year-old passenger in the Neon, Shane Ashpaugh, of Boonville.

The driver of the Neon and a 15-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Josh Hawley says Missouri’s Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill is “another Washington liberal” for her decision to vote against President Donald Trump’s U.S. Supreme Court nominee.

McCaskill on Wednesday announced she will vote against Judge Brett Kavanaugh over his positions on “dark money” issues.

She also says that allegations raised by Christine Blasey Ford that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her more than 30 years ago when they were in high school are troubling and should be examined. But she said she didn’t base her decision on that.

Hawley has maintained support for Kavanaugh. The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Hawley on Wednesday said he will continue to do so “until there is some proof” of the allegations. He urged a vote next week.

BOLIVAR, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say an 11-year-old girl was killed and two of her brothers were seriously injured when a car carrying seven family members from Nebraska overturned in Missouri.

The one-car accident occurred early Tuesday on Missouri 13 in Bolivar. The Lincoln Journal-Star reports the family’s youngest child, 11-year-old Eliza Bakirane, died at the scene.

Bolivar police say the car, driven by 40-year-old Maria Borland of Lincoln, Nebraska, went off the side of the road, over-corrected and lost traction on dirt and gravel due to construction. The vehicle then overturned several times before coming to rest on its wheels.

Borland’s two sons were thrown from the vehicle and were eventually flown to a hospital in St. Louis. The others in the vehicle were taken to a Springfield hospital.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A former prosecutor and chairman of Missouri’s Democratic Party has been sentence to two years and three months in federal prison for misusing campaign funds for personal expenses and vacations.

Mike Sanders also was ordered Wednesday to forfeit $40,000. He pleaded guilty earlier this year conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Sanders had been on a trajectory to run for statewide or congressional office before resigning two years ago as head of Jackson County government. In his guilty plea, Sanders acknowledged converting $62,000 in political campaign funds into cash in a check-cashing scheme involving a disabled friend from high school.

While some of that cash went for political purposes, Sanders admitted using $15,000 to $40,000 of the cashed checks for personal use. Sanders will begin serving his sentence Nov. 5.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — An 18-year-old who fatally shot another man two years ago during a botched drug deal has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and will serve 12 years in prison.

Navarro Scott was scheduled to go to trial Tuesday. But he pleaded guilty the day before to involuntary manslaughter in the December 2016 death of 33-year-old Keith Chambers. Scott, who was 16 at the time, was previously charged as an adult with second-degree murder.

Co-defendant Brian Smith told police that he and Scott accompanied Chambers to buy marijuana from Dariel Reid. Chambers shot Reid in the arm while attempting to rob him. Scott then shot Chambers. Smith grabbed the marijuana in the melee.

Smith was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and Reid is awaiting trial.
