SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A man has been charged with three misdemeanors after a crash that killed a 10-year-old boy at a Springfield elementary school.

Greene County prosecutor Dan Patterson on Monday charged Lonnie Yeager with three misdemeanors, including operating a vehicle without a license and two counts of lying on a state form when applying for a driver’s license.

Investigators say Yeager’s vehicle hit and killed Riddick Tudor outside Campbell Elementary in September 2017. Four other people were injured.

 

Yeager didn’t have a Missouri driver’s license at the time of the crash. Records from a previous case show Yeager told police he wasn’t supposed to be driving because he had a traumatic brain Injury.

FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — A 6-year-old Kansas girl who was hit in the head by an overthrown softball has come home after spending two months in the hospital.

Paizlee Crumby, of Fort Scott, was rushed to Children’s Mercy Hospital on July 14 after being knocked unconscious. Doctors removed the right side of her skull to remove a blood clot. They also operated twice to drain fluid from on her brain.

Now that Paizlee is home, she spends her time with her kittens and playing the game “Trouble.” Paizlee says she wins “all the time.” She is being homeschooled until she undergoes an operation to replace the right side of her skull. For now, a helmet protects the exposed part of her brain.

She also will need speech and physical therapy.

MACON, Mo. (AP) — A member of the Missouri National Guard is hospitalized after suffering shrapnel wounds in the face, apparently the result of a man who was shooting rifles to adjust their sights at a nearby property.

The Guard member was struck Monday when a bullet went through a truck windshield at a National Guard training site in Macon. The bullet lodged in a metal frame, but shrapnel hit the driver. The victim’s name and condition were not released.

Initially, the Macon County Sheriff’s Department was alerted to a report of an active shooter.

Arriving officers heard gunshots and eventually traced them to a neighboring landowner. The man told police he was adjusting the sight of his rifles. Police say the man was unaware his shot had struck anyone.

JACKSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged murder.

Just after 3a.m. Tuesday, deputies received a 911 call from a residence located at 26985 Q.4 Road north of Holton, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

The caller advised that her son had shot her husband twice in the head and she was baracaded inside a bedroom.

Deputies responded to the scene and observed a man inside the residence armed with a long gun.

Deputies were able to approach the house and extricated the woman from a bedroom window while the suspected shooter tried to break down the bedroom door. Deputies were able to move the woman to safety without injury.

The sheriff  made contact with the suspect by telephone and spoke with him for several hours. The suspect refused to follow directives and refused to exit the residence.

Deputies propelled gas into the residence at which time the suspect allegedly fired a shotgun towards deputies striking a vehicle they were using for cover.

Just after 8:30a.m., the suspect exited the residence and surrendered to law enforcement around.

Deputies found a deceased man inside the residence. The name of the victim is not yet being released pending the notification of family.

The suspect Derrick G. Bohnenkemper was evaluated by EMS and transported to the Jackson County Jail where he is being held on murder charges, according Sheriff Morse.

 

NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) — A 26-year-old Webb City man pleaded guilty to assaulting a Newton County sheriff’s deputy by shooting at him during a vehicle pursuit in Neosho.

Andrew Utley entered the plea Monday to assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Under a plea agreement, felony counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest were dropped.

His sentencing was set for Oct. 29.

 

Utley, who had an earlier conviction, was not allowed to own a gun.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A former Missouri postal carrier has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for pocketing money and presents from people on his mail route.

Judge Roseann Ketchmark said in sentencing 58-year-old James Chapman on Monday that, “Stealing birthday money from little kids is deplorable.”

Court records say the thefts took place between May 2016 and February 2017 while Chapman was delivering mail in Newton County.

BEIJING (AP) — The Latest on the U.S.-China trade war (all times local):

China says it will increase tariffs on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods in retaliation after President Donald Trump announced new U.S. tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports.

It’s the latest volley in the trade war between the two countries, and an American business group is warning that a downward spiral in the conflict appears certain.

China’s Finance Ministry says it is going ahead with plans announced in August for increases of 10 percent and 5 percent on 5,207 types of U.S. goods. A list released last month included coffee, honey and industrial chemicals.

The European Union’s trade chief says U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports is “very unfortunate” and that the EU disagrees with the methods he’s using.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday that “this escalation is of course very unfortunate.”

Malmstrom said the 28-nation EU — the world’s biggest trading bloc — shares Washington’s concerns about some of China’s policies “but we disagree with the methods that the U.S. is using.”

She noted that “trade wars are not good and they are not easy to win.”

Trade officials from the EU, U.S. and Japan meet again next week for talks aimed at easing trade tensions.

China said Tuesday it will take “counter-measures” to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports and an American business group warned a “downward spiral” in their trade battle appears certain.

The Commerce Ministry gave no details of China’s response to U.S. tariffs imposed in their fight over Chinese technology policy. But Beijing previously released a $60 billion list of American goods for retaliation.

The Trump administration announced the tariffs on some 5,000 Chinese-made goods will start at 10 percent, beginning Monday. They rise to 25 percent on Jan. 1.

If China retaliates, Trump threatened Monday to add a further $267 billion in Chinese imports to the target list.

The American Chamber of Commerce in China says Beijing will “dig its heels in” after U.S. tariff hikes and appealed for a negotiated end to their trade battle.

The chamber on Tuesday warned a “downward spiral” appears certain after President Donald Trump approved a tariff hike on $200 billion of Chinese imports in a dispute over Beijing’s technology policy. China has said it will retaliate.

The chamber chairman, William Zarit, said in a statement, “Contrary to views in Washington, China can — and will — dig its heels in and we are not optimistic about the prospect for a resolution in the short term.”

The chamber appealed to both governments for results-oriented negotiations.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — An 18-year-old has been charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old at a suburban Kansas City child welfare office where children have been kept overnight because of a shortage of beds.

Michael Anthony Hamer was charged last week with rape and aggravated indecent liberties of a child. Bond is set at $500,000. His attorney didn’t immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press.

Kansas lawmakers and child advocates have been raising concerns for months about keeping children overnight in child welfare contractors’ offices.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe says authorities have dealt with many troublesome issues at the KVC Behavioral Healthcare office in Olathe, where the rape was reported in May.

KVC spokeswoman Jenny Kutz says the agency takes “this situation very seriously.”
