JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) – Authorities have ended their search for a Joplin homicide suspect after finding the suspect’s vehicle ablaze alongside a road.

Joplin police said  that the search for the suspect began when officers discovered a man dead Monday night while responding to a report of an assault.

The vehicle that the suspect was believed to be driving was later discovered on fire along a Jasper County road.

The release says the suspect from the Joplin homicide investigation is “no longer a threat” and that investigators aren’t seeking any other suspects at this time. No other details were immediately released.

KANSAS CITY – A Kansas City man was sentenced Monday to 65 months in federal prison for robbing a bank in Bonner Springs, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Timothy Karpovich, 39, Kansas City, Mo., pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. An affidavit filed in the case alleged that Karpovich robbed the KCB Bank at 13010 Commercial in Bonner Springs.

He gave the teller a handwritten note that read, “This is a robbery.” After the teller complied with the demand, Karpovich took the money, and fled the bank on foot.

Police received a tip that the robber gambled regularly at Harrah’s Casino in North Kansas City, Missouri. Casino employees identified Karpovich from a bank surveillance photo. He was arrested without incident at the casino.

NORWALK, Conn. (AP) — Pepperidge Farm is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish Crackers because of fears they could potentially have salmonella.

The company on Monday took the action after one of its ingredient suppliers notified it that whey powder used in a seasoning may be contaminated. The products were distributed in the United States and no illnesses have been reported.

The Goldfish recall covers Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel. The company has posted a chart with the product codes on its website.

The products can be returned to place of purchase for a refund.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A nail salon manager has been convicted of setting a fire that killed two firefighters in Kansas City.

A  Jackson County circuit judge on Monday found 46-year-old Thu Hong Nguyen guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, second-degree arson and second-degree assault.

Her sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 14. She could be facing to up to 30 years in prison for each murder charge.

Forty-three-year-old Larry Leggio and 39-year-old John Mesh were killed when a brick wall fell on them as they fought a fire at a three story building containing Nguyen’s nail salon in October 2015.

Two other firefighters were seriously injured.

Authorities say Nguyen lit a fire in the salon’s storeroom and that she was the last person seen leaving.

HARTSVILLE, Mo. (AP) – A Florida man suspected of shooting a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper has been charged with 12 felonies including first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Court records available online show prosecutors filed the charges in Wright County last week against 32-year-old Colby Rey of Orlando, Florida.

Authorities say two troopers and a police officer were investigating reports of a suspicious vehicle Wednesday on a county road outside Mansfield, about 40 miles east of Springfield. They ordered a man to get out of his car. He refused and shot at them.

The trooper who was shot, Robert Crewse, was treated at a hospital for minor wounds.

The officers returned fire. Rey was hit several times and remains hospitalized in Springfield.

It wasn’t clear Monday whether Rey has an attorney.
