TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran says President Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin was a “missed opportunity” to press for “better behavior” from Russia.

Moran said during a Fox News interview Tuesday that the summit in Helsinki gave Trump a chance to publicly show solidarity with Europe and NATO and to tell Putin that Russian meddling in U.S. and European elections will not be tolerated.

But the Kansas Republican also said he thinks Trump has been strong in dealing with Russia and has not backed off sanctions on that nation. Moran also said he believes Trump sees Russia as an adversary and may have delivered tough messages in private.

Moran visited Russia with other senators earlier this month and faced criticism for being there on the Fourth of July.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – The state of Missouri has revoked the peace officer license of a former highway patrol trooper who was driving a patrol boat when a handcuffed Iowa man fell out and drowned.

Anthony Piercy’s license was permanently revoked after the Missouri Department of Public Safety reviewed evidence in the death of 20-year-old Brandon Ellingson, of Clive, Iowa.

Piercy’s lawyer, Tim Van Ronzelen, said Tuesday he will appeal the license revocation.

Ellingson fell out of a water patrol boat on the Lake of the Ozarks in 2014. Witnesses said he was handcuffed and a wearing a life jacket that was not properly secured.

Piercy pleaded guilty last year to negligent operation of a vessel. He was sentenced to two years of supervised probation and 10 days in jail.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – The group fighting a ballot measure that would make Missouri a right-to-work state has outraised its opponents by more than $4 million.

The fundraising totals, released this week by the Missouri Ethics Commission, show a large financial advantage for We Are Missouri, a group opposed to banning mandatory union fees in workplaces.

It has raised more than $5.4 million since the beginning of April, and still has more than $3.7 million on hand, more than triple its opponents.

In contrast, the three groups campaigning in favor of right-to-work pulled in more than $1.2 million, and have a little more than $1 million left for the final three weeks of the campaign.

The election is Aug. 7.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Authorities say two planes carrying more than 250 passengers made emergency landings at Kansas City International Airport.

Kansas City Aviation Department spokesman Joe McBride says the first emergency landing happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday after crews on Delta Air Lines flight 923 reported a fuel leak. The plane was coming from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Kansas City with 117 people aboard.

McBride says about an hour later, Alaska Airlines flight 1097 was diverted to Kansas City because of pressurization issues. The Alaska Airlines flight had been headed from Dulles Airport in suburban Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles International Airport with 150 passengers.

No injuries were reported.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The father of an engineering student from India who was fatally shot in Kansas City said Tuesday that he wishes a person of interest in the killing had been arrested rather than shot to death by police, because he wants to know why the man killed his son.

Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith said the man, 25-year-old Marlin Mack, had never drawn law enforcement’s attention in the Missouri city until he became a person of interest in the July 6 killing of 25-year-old Sharath Koppu during a robbery at a restaurant.

Police fatally shot Mack on Sunday after he opened fire on officers with a high-powered semi-automatic rifle outside a motel and later at a home, Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith said Monday. Three officers were wounded in the gunfight.

Investigators believe Koppu was the random victim of a robbery, police spokesman Sgt. Jake Becchina.

Koppu’s father, Koppu Ram Mohan, told reporters in Hyderabad, India, that his son had already quit his part-time job at the restaurant and was working his last shift when he was killed. Mohan lamented that he will never know why Koppu died.

“The mystery of the killing of my son remains as there is no clarity on what exactly had happened on July 6,” Mohan told reporters at his home in Hyderabad. “I am not pleased as his dead killer will not be able to answer many questions, like why he had killed my son. It would have been better if police had caught him alive.”

Koppu’s body was flown to Hyderabad last week where he was cremated in the presence of hundreds of mourners, including top local government officials.

Video showing a man with a towel apparently concealing a gun at the restaurant on the day of the shooting prompted up to 40 tips, Smith said. Mohan asked that police release all the footage from the shooting.

Smith said one of the officers injured in the exchange of gunfire with Mack on Sunday was expected to be released from the hospital Monday, but would need ongoing medical attention. The other two remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, Smith said.

MITCHELL COUNTY —The son of a Beloit woman murdered in August of 2003 was arrested Monday on a charge of First-degree Murder.

According to the Mitchell County Communications Center, on Monday, authorities in Johnson County arrested Charles (“Chuck”) Ray Fleming, 46, on a charge of First Degree Murder for the murder of Carol Fleming that occurred on August 16, 2003 in Beloit, Kansas.

Fleming was has been transported to Mitchell County by Beloit Police Chief Dave Elam and Mitchell County Sheriff Tony Perez. The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department and Beloit Police Department continue to work on this joint investigation.

A First Appearance hearing before the District Magistrate Judge will be scheduled once Fleming is booked and processed in Mitchell County. Police released no additional details

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens’ campaign spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal fees in his final months in office before he resigned amid scandals.

Campaign finance reports filed Monday show Greitens’ campaign spent about $610,000 for legal help between April and the end of June.

That doesn’t include any personal legal fees Greitens paid as he worked to fend off multiple criminal charges and potential impeachment by the Republican-led Legislature. A felony invasion-of-privacy charge against him was later dropped.

Greitens, a Republican, resigned June 1.

His departure has not brought an end to his troubles. A Republican lawmaker this month filed an ethics complaint that accused Greitens’ gubernatorial campaign of multiple campaign finance violations. An attorney for the campaign has said no laws were broken.

TANEY COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 6p.m. Monday in Taney County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Dodge Ram driven by Angel O. Maldonado, 53, Kirbyville, was eastbound on MO 76 eight miles east of Branson. The pickup collided with a westbound 2003 Chevy Express driven by Joshua J. Strahan, 37, Kirbyville, then traveled off the road and struck a tree.

A passenger in the Dodge Emilio Pineda Millan, 23, Kirbyville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Maldonado to Cox South Hospital. Strahan was not injured. Millan was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.
