MARIES COUNTY — One person died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Monday in Maries County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Daryl L. Burke, 44, Camdenton, was westbound on Highway 42 four miles west of Belle.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, according to the MSHP.

Burke was flown to Capitol Regional Medical Center where he died.

A passenger Kory A. Burke, 19, St. Clair, was transported to the hospital in Rolla. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A Kansas City man who told authorities he was hearing “voices” when he wounded two men has been charged with fatally shooting a third man on the same night.

Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd announced Monday that 41-year-old Arnoldo Pompa-Rascon is indicted on first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges in the deadly May 11 shooting of popular tattoo artist Russell Fisk.

Pompa-Rascon previously was charged with two shootings that happened minutes apart and about an hour after the 30-year-old Fisk was shot in his car. Court records say Pompa-Rascon told investigators that the gun wouldn’t fire “if they are good people.” He’s jailed on $1 million bond. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

Zahnd says he is reviewing whether to seek the death penalty.

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a criminal threat and have a suspect in custody.

Early Monday, Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) received a phone call stating there was an explosive device in one of their buildings, according to Lieutenant Andrew Beightel.

The call forced an evacuation at the school.  During an investigation, Topeka Police Officers we’re able to gather information and work with the Washburn University Police Department to identify the possible suspect that placed the call for the bomb threat, according to Beightel.

Just after 1:30p.m., officers were able to locate 35-year-old Antwon Deon Walker. Police arrested him on requested charges of aggravated criminal threat.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Pennsylvania man who owns a company called Horseshoe Hill Outfitters was sentenced to five years on probation, banned from doing business in Kansas and fined $30,000 for violating the Lacey Act, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Robert P. McConnell, 48, Slippery Rock, Penn., pleaded guilty to four counts of importing deer into Kansas in violation of the Lacey Act, which regulates the trade in wildlife, fish and plants that has been illegally taken, possessed, transported or sold. Horseshoe Hill Outfitters advertises what it calls “trophy North American big game hunting adventures” in Kansas, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Ontario.

In two counts, McConnell admitted importing deer that were not from an accredited heard, were not officially identified and did not have a certificate of veterinary inspection. In two other counts, he admitted importing domesticated deer.

McAllister commended the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough for their work on the case.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – The University of Missouri will raise in-state, undergraduate tuition by 1 percent beginning this fall.

The increase was announced in a press release Monday, after university officials reached a deal with state lawmakers to keep higher education funding stable.

Out-of-state and graduate students, however, will see their tuition increase by 2.1 percent, the maximum allowed under a current law that allows tuition to increase in line with inflation.

On Friday, lawmakers also gave public universities more flexibility to raise tuition in the future. If that bill is approved by the governor, universities could raise tuition up to 5 percent on top of any inflation-related increases, but only if their funding had been cut the year before.

BOUTTE, La. (AP) – Louisiana authorities say the passenger who died in a weekend helicopter crash was from Oklahoma. The injured pilot and crewman are from Florida and Missouri.

The helicopter crashed Sunday in a marsh along a power line right-of-way in Boutte  about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of New Orleans.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne identified the dead man in a statement Monday as 33-year-old Ryan Lamont Cardwell of Watonga.

He says Cardwell worked for a contractor hired to service the Entergy Corp. right-of-way.

He says 33-year-old helicopter crewman Chance Mills of Missouri and 38-year-old pilot Kenneth Gestal of Florida were both taken to a hospital Sunday. Champagne said Mills’ injuries appeared severe. The statement didn’t give their home towns.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Police have arrested 18 people protesting inside Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s office as part of a demonstration against policies he champions.

Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman Adam Winters said the demonstrators were arrested Monday for criminal trespassing by the Capitol Police.

About 40 protesters with the Poor People’s Campaign gathered outside the building housing Kobach’s office to decry his stance against illegal immigration and for tough voter identification laws. The protesters called those policies tools of white supremacy.

Kobach was not in the building after attending a political luncheon in Leavenworth. He issued a statement defending his fight against illegal immigration, saying, “the law is the law.”

It was the second of six weeks of planned protests. The campaign is focused on array of social and economic issues.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man who yelled “Get out of my country!” before killing one Indian immigrant and wounding another in a suburban Kansas City bar has pleaded guilty to three federal hate-crime charges.

Fifty-three-year-old Adam Purinton entered the plea Monday in federal court. He previously pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in state court in the February 2017 death of 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla. The shooting in Olathe, Kansas, also wounded Kuchibhotla’s friend and a man who tried to intervene.

The attack stirred fears that immigrants were facing more violence after the election of President Donald Trump. It also attracted attention in India, where officials publicly wondered if Indian citizens are safe in the U.S.

Witnesses said Purinton was asked to leave the bar after uttering racial slurs, then returned and opened fire.

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri man has pleaded guilty to a fatal love-triangle shooting in Branson.

The Taney County prosecuting attorney announced Monday in a news release that 22-year-old Dakota Claypole, of Branson, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He initially was charged with first-degree murder in the January 2017 death of 22-year-old Daxton Drake.

The release says both men were romantically involved with the same woman. She told authorities that she was in bed with Drake when Claypole walked up the stairs leading into the bedroom armed with a handgun.

The release says Claypole yelled at Drake and fired in his direction before fatally shooting Drake when he stood up. Claypole was arrested a few miles away after fleeing in Drake’s vehicle.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 3.
