SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A southwest Missouri man has been freed on bail after his conviction in his wife’s Christmas Day 2006 death was overturned.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that 61-year-old Brad Jennings was released Friday. Jennings says he always maintained hope because he knew he was innocent of killing his wife, Lisa Jennings, at the couple’s home in the town of Buffalo. Her death initially was ruled a suicide but was re-investigated after her sister raised concerns.

One key issue in overturning his 2009 conviction last week was the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s failure to disclose testing on the robe that Bradley Jennings was wearing. The defense didn’t learn until years later that the robe tested negative for gunshot residue.

State prosecutors have 120 days to decide whether to try him again.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Portrait Gallery is unveiling portraits of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.

Barack Obama’s portrait was painted by Kehinde Wiley — an artist best known for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of African-Americans. For Michelle Obama’s portrait, the gallery commissioned Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald, first-prize winner of the Portrait Gallery’s 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition.

The paintings were unveiled Monday at the gallery, which is part of the Smithsonian group of museums. The gallery has a complete collection of presidential portraits.

OSAGE COUNTY — Missouri man has been struck and killed on an icy Kansas highway.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened Saturday when a car went off the side of Interstate 35 in Osage County, about 35 miles east of Emporia.

The car struck a full-size van that was legally parked in the median and two people who were on foot. The men identified as 49-year-old Robert Groh, of Raymore, Missouri and 35-year-old Adam Balentine, Judsonia, AR., were transported to a local hospital where Grob died.

The man driving the car Taylor Walker, 24, Kalamazoo, MI and his passenger from San Diego weren’t hurt.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been fatally shot in a Kansas City, Kansas, home.

Police say officers responding to a report of disturbance found the victim dead late Saturday in a neighborhood west of the Kansas Speedway. He had been shot in the abdomen. The man was in his late 40s. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on felony charges.

Just after 1:30 Sunday, police began watching a residence in the 1500 block of SW Campbell in Topeka for a man wanted on a Federal arrest warrant for felon in possession of a firearm, according Police Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

Visual confirmation was made on the subject identified as 31-year old Jacob Gish and he ran back into his residence.

Gish refused to answer the door and attempts to make contact with him were made by phone and the use of a PA. After approximately 45 minutes of trying to get the him to come outside, he finally surrendered to the officers and was taken into custody without incident.

Gish and booked into the Shawnee County Jail on his Federal warrant and felony obstruction.

He has two previous drug convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Disposal kiosks for unused medication would be allowed in Missouri under a bill designed to fight the opioid crisis.

The Columbia Missourian reports that state law currently doesn’t permit the types of kiosks that are being installed in Walgreens and CVS stores around the country.

The bill also would authorize the Missouri Board of Pharmacy to work with public or private entities to develop a statewide drug take-back program. Rep. Keith Frederick, R-Rolla, said his bill would allow Walgreens to bring the medication disposal kiosks to its Missouri locations.

Missouri Psychiatric Association lobbyist Mo McCullough testified in favor of the bill before a committee this past week. He said he didn’t know what to do with leftover opioids from his late son’s battle with cancer.
