Dr. Leighton LaVerne Linn
1928 – 2019

Dr. Leighton LaVerne Linn, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of South Dakota, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019.

He was born in St. Lawrence, South Dakota to Glenn W. and Avis Linn (Magness) Leighton married Gisela Linn on May 22, 1974 in Pierre South Dakota. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1948 to 1954. Following his service, Dr. Linn attended Kansas State University from 1954-1960, where he received his Doctorates in Animal Science. He began his first Veterinary practice in 1960 in Howard South Dakota, where after 10 years, he sold the practice and began field consulting for local farmers. Dr. Linn continued this until 1974, then he and his wife moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, to begin a new animal healthcare business. Leighton and his partners, Cliff Boyer and Gary Jones, began Star Labs in St. Joseph where they focused on creating and developing probiotics for livestock and poultry. He enjoyed wine tasting, golfing, and had a love of travel. He was also a high school football star in 1946 when they won the championship, and still hold an unbeatable record.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Kenneth Linn.

Survivors include his wife; Gisela, daughter; Kristine Lea Winneke (Gregory), brother in law; Andreas Laufer, nieces; Roseli Jaslow (Phil), and Gisela Nikki Laufer, along with numerous cousins and family members.

James G. Fitzgerald
1932 – 2019

James G. Fitzgerald, 87, Buffalo, Missouri, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away April 16, 2019 at his home.

James was born on January 15, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Eugene and Ida (Bollwerk) Fitzgerald. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. On June 4, 1955, James married Carolyn Edwards. Together, they raised four children. She preceded him in death on December 23, 1988. James was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, charter member, past club president and past District Governor of St. Joseph East Rotary and past president of St. Joseph Board of Realtors.

In addition to his parents and first wife, James is preceded in death by his sister Marie Riley.

Surviving family includes: wife, Marilyn Fitzgerald; children, Joseph Fitzgerald (Jane), John Fitzgerald (Christy), Catherine Fitzgerald, Linda Saliga (Steve); step-children, Craig Lilley (Debbie), Rhonda Wright (Rick), Chad Lilley (Trudy), Robin Stewart (Ernie); Brother, Robert Fitzgerald; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Larry Frank Boeh
1946 – 2019

Larry Boeh, age 72, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be held at Brockhaus-Howser-Fillmer Funeral Home in Norfolk. Larry died Monday, February 11, 2019, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Larry Frank Boeh, son of Eva Elizabeth Liechti and Wilbur Francis Boeh, was born August 17, 1946, at Sister’s Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. He attended school in Wathena, Kansas and graduated from Highland, Kansas High School in 1964. On January 20, 1968, Larry was united in marriage to June Bernice Smith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. They were blessed with one son, Preston Lawrence Boeh. Larry lived in various places throughout his lifetime including, Primrose and Albion, Nebraska, St. Joseph, Missouri, Chambers and Lincoln, Nebraska, Sealy, Texas, and Norfolk, Nebraska. He was employed as a construction supervisor and a project manager in all phases of fiberoptic placement. Larry was a member of the Jaycees in Albion and was involved with Boone County races and fairground events.

Larry is survived by his wife, June B. Boeh of Norfolk, Nebraska; son, Preston L. (Amy K.) Boeh of Battle Creek, Nebraska; sisters, Ellen (Tom) Blackburn Katy, Texas and Peggy (Mark) Augustine of Helena, Missouri; brother, Ed (Geneva) Anderson of Holt, Missouri; and furbaby, Casey AKA “Monkey.”

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Boeh; mother, Eva Mallory; step-fathers, Oakley Anderson and Steve Mallory; step-brother, David Anderson; two stillborn granddaughters, Quinn Marie Boeh and Sidney Kay Boeh; and family furbabies, Toby, TJ, and Pixie.

Memorial Service: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Harman-Rohde Funeral in Wathena, Kansas.

Larry K. Correll, 62, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday April 17, 2019.
He was born February 2, 1957, in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, James K. Correll and Dorothy L. Peek.

Ramona Lisa Best, 49, of St Joseph, passed away Monday April 15, 2019 at her home in St. Joseph.

She was born February 26, 1970 in St. Joseph. She attended Benton High School. She worked at Stetson Hat and later BMS Warehousing for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, being outdoors, going to the casino, coloring and working puzzles.

Ramona was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Best, father, Robert Best Sr., brother, Rick Best.

She is survived by daughter, Stormy Monroe of St Joseph, son, Donald Easter, of St. Joseph; brothers, Robert Best, David Caw, Marvin Ballard, Terry Soule, and Ernie Best, sisters, Cindy Best, Toni Best, Christina Best and Debbie Best; grandchildren, Sabrina Laws, Emerson Horn and Jackson Shepherd.

Mary Grace Sprague
1944 – 2019

Mary Grace Sprague, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, April 15, 2019.

She was born January 16, 1944 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mary was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Altar Society, Charitable Ladies of St. Joseph and a frequent volunteer at MIR House of Prayer. She was a graduate of Avila College with a BS Degree in nursing. Mary worked as a registered nurse at Sisters and Heartland Hospital for 28 years.
She was an amazing mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Marguerite (Dunbar) Allgaier; brothers, John, James, Joe, Howard and Bill Allgaier.

Survivors include daughters, Lisa Scott (Brad), Deborah Foster (Toby); son, Timothy Sprague (Lisa); grandchildren, Emily Blue (Harrison), Katie Scott, Megan and Madlyn Sprague, Hallie and Ella Foster; sister, Betty Chappell; numerous nieces and nephews.

Marjorie Morris Bennett
1918 – 2019

Marjorie Morris Bennett, St. Joseph, Mo., died April 15, 2019, at the age of 100. Her life was a grand adventure. She survived the Great Depression and the Dust Bowls of Oklahoma, lived all over the world with her husband and three daughters, made an impact on hundreds of children through her career in education, and left to enrich the world 40 wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We believe that she was blessed to transition from this world to the next during this most significant of times: Holy week leading to Easter.

Born in Granite, Okla., in 1918, Marge was the daughter of Daniel Jacob and Etta Zula Morris. She was married for almost 76 years to Lt. Col. Frank Woodrow Bennett, who preceded her in death. She was the mother of Roberta June Swope, Joyce Coker Dreier, and Marilyn Jo Huff. She loved her family, excelled in cooking, created magical birthday cakes, Halloween costumes, and doll clothes, and enjoyed playing games (and cheating at them). She was smart, skipping two grades in school and starting college in Weatherford, Oklahoma, at the age of 16. She was pretty, artistic, feisty and fun. After Frank retired from the Air Force, Marge and Frank lived in St. Louis for 34 years, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in education. She taught emotionally and behaviorally challenged children for many years. Marge and Frank were long-time church members in St. Louis and active in a group called the KeenAgers. They moved to Olathe, Kan., in 2004 to be closer to family. She had been a resident of St. Joseph, Mo., for two years.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and their spouses, Roberta June Swope (Nick), Joyce Coker Dreier (Ron), and Marilyn Huff (Dick) and 12 grandsons: Todd Trueblood, Tague Trueblood (Kim), Thor Trueblood, Nick Swope (Sonia), John Swope (Rachel), Chad Coker (Renee), Scot Coker (Melissa), Bret Coker, and Joel Coker (Kalie), Christopher Huff (Dusty), Cory Huff (Simone), and Adam Huff (Abigail). She also had 28 great grandchildren. She was brightened by the companionship of Nicole Kisling, Melissa Markus, and Brad Dreier and their families.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Zula Smith, Oliver Conley, Cecil Morris, and George Morris. A private family service is planned in St. Joseph. Gary Max Fuller
1937 – 2019

Gary Max Fuller, 81, Savannah, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Living Community of St. Joseph.

He was born April 15, 1937 in Guilford, Missouri. Gary married Lisa Rose Sibenaller August 17, 1996. She survives of the home. He graduated from Horace Mann High School in Maryville, Missouri, Class of 1955. Gary enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959. He worked as a terminal manager at Crouch Bros. then later started his own trucking business. Gary taught 4-H Horsemanship and also was a youth baseball coach. He enjoyed life to the fullest, especially time spent with his family and friends.
Gary was a past member of St. Joseph Traffic Club, American Quarter Horse Association and Eagles Lodge of St. Joseph, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Helen (Brown) Fuller; brother, Robert Fuller; father and mother in-law, Dominic and Jacqueline Sibenaller; and sister-in-law, Joyce Sibenaller.

Additional survivors include sons, Mike, Eric and Darin Fuller; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Albert Ellis Fuller, Jr.; brothers-in-law, Richard Sibenaller, Dean Sibenaller (Aura Lee); sisters-in-law, Joyce Clark (Doug), Nancy Schultes (Mike); numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Dixie Lee Solonycze
1932 – 2019

Dixie Lee Solonycze, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2019, at her home.

She was born January 3, 1932, in St. Joseph. Dixie married John J. Solonycze on June 13, 1953. He preceded her in death on October 23, 2018. She was a teacher for most of her life. Dixie was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church, the Moila Country Club, and Heartland Health’s Auxiliary Board.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Earl H. and Lucille (Vaughn) White Foster.

Survivors include her sons, Gregg (Joyce) and David John (Loralyn) Solonycze; grandchildren, Lindsey, Christapher (Nikki), Brett, Ben, and Scott; great-grandchildren, Adin and Brice; brothers, John Paul and Phil White; sisters, Joyce Walsh and Judy Clark; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Betty Ann Rotts
1941 – 2019

Betty Ann (Gomeck) Rotts, 77, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away Monday, April 15, 2019, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born June 23, 1941 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and graduated from St. James Parochial School, the Convent of the Sacred Heart and St. Joseph Beauty University. Betty married Eric Carl “Ric” Rotts on November 25, 1961, at St. James Catholic Church. He survives of the home. Betty was a parishioner at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where she served as greeter and prepared/donated meals for funeral lunches. She recently retired as a hairdresser at Beck Plaza Salon. Betty enjoyed creating elaborate ceramic nativity scenes with hand-crafted wooden mangers: She then gave a set to each of her five children. Betty also enjoyed hair-dressing herself and many others with the latest styles (frequently using her children, when they were young, as Guinea pigs). Betty was a wonderful cook, especially Cajun food, and loved entertaining large groups of family and friends for their birthdays and the holidays. She also enjoyed hosting “block parties” in New Orleans, where the food was fantastic! After transferring with Ric back to St. Joseph in 1986, she hosted dinner parties with her loyal card group. She also traveled with the group out-of-state and always spoke very highly each of its members. Betty cherished her multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren: She treasured the time she spent babysitting and attended most all of their numerous sporting events, plays, recitals, and graduations, both near-and-far.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Kathryn (Plekan) Gomeck.

Barbara Jo (Ezzell) Landis
1939 – 2019

Barbara Jo (Ezzell) Landis, 80, Faucett, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Mosaic Life Care.

She was born February 20, 1939 in Villisca, Iowa. Barbara moved to St. Joseph with her family at 8 years old. She graduated from Faucett High School and married the love of her life, Walter Austill Landis, Jr on June 2, 1956.
She was a member of The Pentecostals of St. Joseph of which she sat on the board of Directors, and was also the Director of Foreign Missions. Barbara was a gracious woman, who never ceased to give of herself to all without hesitation. She loved so deeply and wanted everyone around her to feel it. Barbara enjoyed her family, gardening, specifically roses, her dogs, cooking and baking, but above all she loved Jesus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Austill Landis, Jr.; parents, Ernest and Dorothy (Belding) Ezzell.

Survivors include children, Esther George (Kevin), Walter A. Landis, III, Mary McKnight (Jeff), Lura Kirby (CJ); 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lorna Young, Donna Young (Richard), Debra Ezzell; numerous nieces and nephews.

Alaine Dooley Holmes
1954 – 2019

Alaine Dooley Holmes passed away on April 12, 2019.

She had an angelic voice and was an amazing pianist. She loved to garden, sew, quilt and made life beautiful. Her priority in life was being a loving wife to Harold, whom she was deeply devoted to, and raising a family. She is the proud mother of Nicole, Ryan (Jocelyn), Marissa (Scott), Joseph (Erin), Jordan (April), and Kelsey (Kevin).

She is survived by her husband, her siblings- Sharon Booras, Patrick Dooley and David Dooley, and her children. She leaves a legacy of 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was loved by all and will be missed.

James Samuel “Jim” Page
1921 – 2019

James Samuel Page, 97, of Rock Falls, IL formerly of Nortonville, KS died Friday, April 12, 2019 at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley, IL.

James was born on August 17, 1921 in Atchison County, KS the son of Charles and Emma (Davidson) Page. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1939. Mr. Page served in the United States Army during World War II, in the 91st Infantry, serving in North Africa and Italy. After returning home he continued farming in the Nortonville Community. He had attended the Nortonville Christian Church, before moving to Illinois in 1984. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Rock Falls, IL, and enjoyed traveling, attending old thrasher and tractor shows.

He was married to Mary Eylar on Aug. 8, 1945, they were later divorced. He later married Clare Novak on April 14, 1987, they were later divorced. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Page, Chino Valley, AZ, Charles (Chrissy) Page, Phoenix, AZ, and Gary (Cheryl) Page, Nortonville, KS and one daughter, Patricia Smith, LaGrange, GA., a sister, Dorothy Alderman, Littleton, CO, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His parents, and two sisters, Elizabeth Dimick, and Evelyn Lynn and one grandson, Trent Dedmon preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Saturday, April 20th, 2019 at the O’Trimble Chapel, 329 Main St. Nortonville, KS with Rev. Bob Carter officiating.. Burial will follow in the Nortonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends one prior to services at the funeral home. 1941 – 2019

Larry E. Sprague, 77, Country Club, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, Missouri.

He was born October 12, 1941, in Hemple, Missouri.

Larry married Lydia Saleem Hilwy on November 4, 1989. She survives of the home.
He was a Master Plumber for many years and owned L.S. Contracting. Larry was a member of First Baptist Church, Savannah, Missouri. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and traveling. More than anything, he loved his children, grandchildren, and wife.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ocle and E. Marie (Gregory) Sprague, and brothers, Jackie, Bob, and Gale.

Ardell Albin Anderson
1928 – 2019

Ardell Albin Anderson 90, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2019 in a Saint Joseph, MO hospital.

He was born May 28, 1928 in Willmar, Minnesota, son of the late Alice and Albin Anderson. He was a Heavy Equipment Operator retiring from Land Construction. He loved to play guitar, bingo, fishing, riding his tractor and baseball. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Ardell was preceded in death by first wife, LaVonne Marjorie Anderson, who he married on December 13, 1947, and second wife, Orva Mae (Blair) Anderson, son, Jerry Anderson, his parents, sisters, Helen Perleberg, Alma Angle, and Eleanor Gerdes, and his brothers, Delanoe Anderson and Vernal Anderson.

Survivors include: daughters, Susan Trant, Troy, KS, Lois (Curtis) Klimpke, Kansas City, KS, Linda (Larry) Albrecht of TX, Judy (Curtis) Thornton, Gower, MO, Janet (Mark) Davidson, Diane (Francis) Gaume, St. Joseph, MO, and Lisa Ruud, Kansas City, MO, sons: David Anderson, St. Joseph, MO, Donald Anderson, Encinida, CA, Scott (Lorraine) Anderson, Vidalia, GA, Stanley (Pam) Anderson, Oregon, MO, and Michael (Vicki) Anderson, St. Joseph, MO, 42 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, sister, Pauline Leason of Willmar, MN, and a brother, Dwaine Anderson, Minneapolis, MN.

Paul E. Meers, of St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2019, at the age of 96.

He was born November 24, 1922, in Troy, Kansas, to Harrison V. and Nina Meers.

He graduated from Savannah High School in 1940. He attended Platt Business College in St. Joseph. He married Elsie Yocum on January 6, 1945. Paul worked at Hunt’s Orchard for a number of years and then at Seitz Packing Company from 1953 until 1980. He and Elsie operated a dairy from their farm from 1967 to 1993 making many lasting friends. His great loves were Elsie, hay, and lawn work. He continued to do both until age 92.

Paul is survived by one son, Gary (Janet) Meers of Lincoln, Nebraska; two daughters, Carolyn (Steve) Ayers and Marilyn (Jack) Campbell, both of St. Joseph; six grandchildren, Trevor (Teri) Meers of Ankeny, Iowa, Ryan (Debbie) Meers of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jason (Kathy) Ayers of Parkville, Missouri, Eric Campbell of St. Joseph, Kimberly Campbell of Maryville, Missouri, and Angela Campbell of St. Joseph; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Allison, Amanda, Katie, Caleb, and Jocelyn Meers; and two sisters, Arminta and Joyce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; granddaughter, Tanya Ayers; two brothers; and two sisters.

Eldon Lee “E.L.” Crawford
1936 – 2019

Eldon Lee “E.L.” Crawford, 82, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Savannah, Missouri, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday, April 13, 2019, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph.

He was born August 2, 1936, on a farm in Barnard, Missouri, to Opha and Hazel Crawford. Eldon was one of nine children and graduated from Graham High School.

In 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Louise Akin, and they had 61 ½ years together. To that union there were two children, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Eldon had been in construction all his adult life. He established E.L. Crawford Construction in 1973. After working in the construction industry for more than fifteen years, Eldon recognized the need for an additional construction company in the area. He was a member of Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and worked on several church and area boards. E.L. loved golfing, fishing with his family, woodworking, snowmobiling, and spending time at the lake and winters in Arizona. He was also a long-time sponsor of Men’s Fastpitch Softball and sponsored youth baseball teams. The biggest love of his life was his family; he would stop and do anything for them.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Opha and Hazel Crawford; brothers, Dale, Forrest, and Curtis Crawford; and infant daughter, Mary Ellen Crawford.

He is survived by two children, Kelly Crawford (Kathy), Savannah, and Kim Gray (Russell), St. Joseph; four grandchildren, Tyler Crawford (Amy), Jessica Baker (Arlin), Hilari McLaughlin (Jordan), Drew Gray (Kate); six great-grandchildren, Kaler Baker, Ace Baker, Cade Crawford, Riley Crawford, Josey Crawford, and Whitley Gray; three sisters, Frances Coffey, Beverly Jackson, and Alice Moats; two brothers, Martin and Jack Crawford, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Genevieve B. Fisher-Barker, 98, formerly of Clarksdale, MO. passed away Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Somerford Place in Encinitas, California.

Born and raised in Clarksdale, Genevieve was valedictorian of her graduating class at Clarksdale High School. She spent most of her adult life in southern California where she raised her five children. Genevieve belonged to the parish of St George in Ontario, California where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, James Barker, parents, Paul J.and Anne G. (Pankau) Fisher; brothers, Bernard, William, Felix, Clemence, Francis, Vincent and James; sisters, Rose, Lucy, Gertrude, and Mary.

Genevieve is survived by her five children, Suzanne Wingfield (Wayne)-Colorado, James Barker (Susanne)-Alaska, Timothy Barker-Oregon, Judith Mastick (Bill)- California and MaryBeth Barker-California; three grandchildren, Natalie and Rodney Mastick, Rochelle Weaver; and great-grandchild, Connor Weaver.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hurlingen, MO. Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St Joseph, MO is entrusted with arrangements.

 

Frederick Frank “Fred” Zabel
1926 – 2019

Frederick Frank “Fred” Zabel, 93, of Atchison KS died on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Fred was born on April 1, 1926 in Atchison KS the son of Frank and Marie (Rohleder) Zabel. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1944. Fred served during World War II in the United States Air Force. He worked starting as a lineman for Southwestern Bell and retired as a wire chief for AT &T Telephone Company in 1985 after 39 years of service. He was a member of the St. Benedicts Church, member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Posts, Atchison and the Pioneers. Fred enjoyed bowling, yard work, flowers, woodworking and especially watching the Royals and Chiefs.

He was married to Marcelline Jean Compton on June 8, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church. She preceded him in death on July 16, 2009.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Leonard) Hundley, Atchison, KS and Jacqueline (Gary) Pauley, Smithville, MO, a granddaughter, Nicole (Paul) Howard, and great granddaughter, Emily Howard. His parents, wife Marcelline, a brother, William Zabel and sister, Henrietta Stucker preceded him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 pm on Monday, April 15th, at St. Benedict’s Church with Fr. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison. A parish rosary will be recited at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 14th, with visitation to follow until 4:00 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Dr. Donald Julian Stallard, Sr.
1923 – 2019

Dr. Donald Julian Stallard, Sr., died on April 10, 2019, at the age of 96.

He was born February 2, 1923, to Julian H. Stallard and Gladys Redding. He was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph. His early education included Central High School and St. Joseph Junior College, now Missouri Western State University. Following this, he obtained a B.A. degree at Kansas University in Lawrence and an M.S. degree in medicine at Missouri University in Columbia. His MD degree was earned at Washington University in St. Louis in 1947. Subsequently, he served a three-year residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. There he met his wife of almost 63 years, Loah Lunan.

Donald was engaged in the practice of internal medicine for over 35 years, first at the Thompson-Brumm-Knepper Medical and Surgical Clinic, and later with the Northwest Missouri Medical Group until his retirement in 1990.
He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity. During his active practice years, he served as president of the staff of the former Methodist Medical Center and president of the Buchanan County Medical Society. He also served on the boards of the regional chapter of the American Red Cross, the St. Joseph Symphony, the Missouri Valley Trust Company, and Green Acres Residential Facility.

After retirement, Donald was active with InterServ Meals on Wheels, Pass the Power Literacy programs, and the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. He also enjoyed many semesters of study at Missouri Western State University.
Donald was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in Korea as a medical officer. His citations included the Korean Service Medal with two service stars and the Combat Medical Badge.
For 10 consecutive years, he was a champion of the YMCA’s citywide squash tournament.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Gladys Redding Stallard, and his sister, Betty Schowalter.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Julia (Paul) Horne, Germantown, Tennessee, Mary (Rob Marinai) Stallard, Oakland, California, Donald (Karen), Mission Hills, Kansas, and James (Cathy Hicks) New York City, New York; and six grandchildren, Brandon Horne, Michael Horne, Amelia Marinai, William Stallard, Samuel Stallard, and Grace Stallard.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 15. Gary Leo Walker
1954 – 2019

Gary Leo Walker, 64, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2019 at his residence.

Gary was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 27, 1954 to Richard and Lucy (Schmidt) Walker.

He attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and was a member of the 1973 graduating class of Lafayette High School. Mr. Walker retired from driving a cab. He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5067. He loved to dream about going fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gary is survived by brothers; Frank (Cindy) Walker, Pete (Linda) Walker, sisters; Sheri (Terry) Harris, Janne (Cary) Otwell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Walker has been cremated under the direction of the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. No visitation or services are scheduled.

Paul L. Neal, Jr.
1927 – 2019

Paul L. Neal, Jr., 91, passed away April 10, 2019, at a local healthcare facility.

Paul was born in Maryville, MO to Paul and Evelyn (Gaugh) Neal. He graduated from Central High School, Class of 1945. Paul joined the Army during World War II. He married Helen Rodina on July 29, 1950. Paul started 2 Phillips 66 Service Stations, retiring in 1977. Paul was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen F. Neal; sister, Evelyn Penland and brother, Robert Neal.

Paul is survived by his son, Michael (Sharon) Neal; daughter, Paula (Gary) McDowell; grandchildren, Jamie Bascue, Corey Neal, Tobi Crippen and Kristi Pointer; 7 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services 1:00 PM, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Heaton Bowman Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, visitation with family receiving friends beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment with military honors following at Memorial Park Cemetery.

James Eugene “Jim” Pike
1956 – 2019

James E.”Jim” Pike, 62, of Lancaster, KS died on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Vintage Park in Hiawatha, KS.

Jim was born on September 1, 1956 the son of Wallace and Charlotte (Weber) Pike. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1974. He was a farmer /rancher and also worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation, out of Atchison on the road crew and lastly as a dispatcher for KDOT. Jim was an avid hunter, and enjoyed fishing, trail and horseback riding, team roping, restoring guns and reloading ammunition. He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, and Ducks Unlimited. He had attended Camp Creek United Methodist Church as a child with his parents.

Survivors include a brother, Gary (Mary Alice) Pike, Lawrence, KS and a sister, Debra (J.R.) Adcock, Hiawatha, KS, nieces and nephews, Joey & Molly Pike, and Megan (Kyle) Geffert, Jennifer (BJ) McKay, and great nieces and nephews, Kyler & Kayden Geffert, and Kaylie & Karsen McKay. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Monday, April 15, 2019 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Shane Spangler, Pastor of the Bethany United Church of Christ Church, Hiawatha, KS officiating. Burial will follow in the Camp Creek Cemetery. Z. June Nash, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

She was born June 1, 1933 in Platte, South Dakota.

June married Russell Nash August 15, 1954. He preceded her in death October 1, 2016.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Randy Nash; parents, Clarence and Margaret (Dyke) Jensen.
Survivors include sons, Steve Nash, Platte City, Missouri, Jeff Nash, St. Joseph Missouri, Todd Nash, Easton, Missouri; 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

John Phillip Sullender
1941 – 2019

On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, John Phillip Sullender passed away at the age of 77.

John was born November 21, 1941 to John Sullender (1901-1978) and Eva Lillian (Ashlock Montgomery) Sullender (1915-1984) of St. Joseph, MO.

John is survived by: sister, Linda Clark of Whitesville, MO; brother, Ralph (Nita) Sullender of Dearborn, MO; Evelyn (Gary) Edwards of Elkland, MO. John went to school in Savannah, MO. He joined the United States Navy in 1960. Upon return from service, he married Linda Lee (Knadler) Sullender (1944-1992) in 1964. He and Linda and the family were members of the First Baptist Church of Savannah, MO. He is survived by their children: Carl (Kim) Sullender; Allen Sullender, Sheri Sullender (John Thornton); Nicole (Frank) Partridge; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family.

Joyce E Titus
1945 – 2019

Joyce E. Titus, 74, of Falls City, surrounded by family, passed away April 11, 2019, at Falls City Nursing and Rehab Center.

Joyce was born at Falls City March 9, 1945, the youngest of three children born to Elmer and Rhoda Bryson Stewart and was a life-long Falls City resident. She grew in Falls City where she attended public schools, graduating high school with the class of 1963. Since she was many years younger than the other two siblings, she would get away with so much more than they ever dreamed of, plus was told that she was the ‘favorite’. Joyce worked at several different things through the years including Pamida and the Falls City Journal. Most importantly she was a mother and wife.

She married James Titus at Falls City September 17, 1967. They enjoyed raising their two sons and years later, watching their grandchildren grow, participate in sporting activities, and babysitting. In later years, Joyce and Jim enjoyed doing and participating in craft shows, instructional classes which included several trips a year to Branson and other locations that hosted classes that demonstrated ‘something different’. Jim survives.

Also surviving are two sons: Scott & Cindy Titus of Lincoln, NE, Steven & Katie Titus of Reserve, KS, 2 granddaughters: Katelynn & Bristol, a grandson Bridger; a step-grand-daughter Kali. A sister in law Sue Gilsdorf of Glenwood, IA also survives.

Jokingly, years ago, it was understood among family that Joyce was not good at cooking and was told ‘she could burn French Fries.’ In her early years of marriage, her nephew would make sugar cookie dough for her to freeze to bake later. This was after her sister tried on several occasions to teach her how to make these cookies. Only Jim knows the truth if it had improved! Since she was only a few years older than her niece and nephews, she did not want to be called “Aunt Joyce”, which still holds true today (plus now it doesn’t sound right). Her heart of gold loved unconditionally, without expecting anything in return. Her love of her beloved pets runs deep. Though the years she had Mollie, Casper, and Zoe (miniature schnauzers) and a poodle named Coquette. No matter what circumstances, Joyce was a great source of strength, support, love and forgiveness. She loved deeply, without limits. There’s no care giver quite like Joyce was. She always gave so much of herself and put others needs before herself, even in her last days.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Donald, and a sister Betty Brock.

A visitation to celebrate Joyce’s life is planned from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening, April 17, at the Christian Center, 519 N First St., Hiawatha. William F. McCall
1934 – 2019

William F. McCall, 84, of St. Joseph, died April 5, 2019, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, TX.

William was born April 21, 1934, in Tarkio, MO, to Thomas John and Rachael Anna (Wooten) McCall.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Gulf of Tonkin, and the Vietnam War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer; retiring in November of 1971. He was a member of the Elks Club, Exchange Club, and Realtors Association all in California, and was founder of the USS Pictor Association AF #54. He and his wife were full time RV’ers from 1995 to 1997. They had been to every state in the country. They moved to St. Joseph in 1997.

William married Lola Dean Hoffman on April 27, 1962 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Scott McCall, John McCall; granddaughter Kimberly Lewis (Ryan); grandson Matthew Peterson, Jr. “PJ”; brother Billy Ray McCall; three sisters, Opal Still, Patsy Angold, Lottie Gothard; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Gary McCall, Cynthia Peterson, William Michael McCall; a number of brothers and sisters.

Services will be Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at 10:30 am at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the Disabled American Veterans or to the Wounded Warrior Project.

 

William “Bill” Huffman
1936 – 2019

William “Bill” Huffman, 82, Helena, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Mosaic Life Care.

He was born May 4, 1936 in Helena, MO.

Bill married Mary Matthews January 16, 1965; she preceded him in death. He married Barbara (Cook) Angle on July 20, 2012; she survives of the home. Bill was a member of Helena 1st Baptist Church.
He retired from Wire Rope.

Bill was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Mary; parents, John and Anetta (Swink) Huffman; brothers, Max, Bob, Glenn, Jewell, and George Huffman; sister, Margaret Bowland; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Huffman; and son-in-law, Mitch Atherton.

Additional survivors include daughter, Gina Huffman; son, David Huffman; daughter, Kathy Bidding (Robert); step-sons, Doug Wyatt, Greg Wyatt (Kim); step-daughters, Becky Richeson (Don), Diane McGinley (Todd); grandchildren, Ryan Bidding, Kayla Jo Sherer; 9 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great-grandchildren; brother, J.D. Huffman; sister, JoAnn Hartbauer; brothers, Jerry Huffman (Wanona), Jim Huffman (Carolyn); numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

1925 – 2019

Virgil C. Wenger, 93, of Hiawatha formerly of Powhattan, KS died Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.
