Gas prices increase in St. Joseph after Hurricane Harvey

AAA Gas Price Map as of 8/31/17

Hurricane Harvey is causing gas prices to increase across the nation.  Drivers in St. Joseph are also seeing that trend at the pump.

AAA on Monday said about one quarter of oil refining capacity in the Gulf Coast have been taken offline. The agency said Harvey also caused eight refineries in Texas to shutdown.

According to AAA, Thursday’s National Average was up .10 cents from a week ago at $2.44 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Missouri jumped up .10 cents in a day to an average of $2.29. In St. Joseph, Thursday’s average was $2.21 an increase of .08 cents in a day.

“No doubt, Harvey has impacted operations and access to refineries in the Gulf Coast. However a clear understanding of overall damage at the refineries is unknown,” said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson. “Despite the country’s overall oil and gasoline inventories being at or above 5-year highs, until there is clear picture of damage and an idea when refineries can return to full operational status, gas prices will continue to increase.”

Scammers call sheriff’s office in northwest Missouri

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is warning area citizens after a scammer called the sheriff’s office.

Recently, Sheriff Steve Cox said his office has received calls from people reporting scam attempts in which the criminals claim to be a law enforcement officer attempting to get people to wire or transfer money to avoid a lawsuit and/or criminal charges and arrest warrants.

“Ironically the same creeper actually called the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and was alarmed when the employee answer the telephone ‘Livingston County Sheriff’s Office,'” Sheriff Cox said. “The criminal then asked who our Chief was and was told Sheriff Steve Cox. The man then wanted additional information but was refused any information. The suspect hung up when asked what he wanted.”

Cox said it’s a scam that is taking place from outside of the United States and that there’s little that can be done.

“The best thing you can do if you have one of these calls is simply hang up the telephone. If you are a victim and actually sent money to these people you should report this to your local law enforcement agency,” Cox said. “Be mindful that not all these callers will claim to be with this office, they may claim to be from the Chillicothe Police or another credible agency. Either way this is not how law enforcement works. Be smart and keep your money.”

Cub Scouts enrollments to be held this week in St. Joseph

Cub Scouts sign-ups are taking place this week at all St. Joseph School District elementary schools.

Eric McGuire is the District Director with the Pony Express Council Boy Scouts of America. McGuire said Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. they will be set up at each of the 16 public elementary schools in the SJSD for Cub Scouts enrollment. Cub Scouts is for boys ages 7-10 or grades 1-5.

“Usually the boys want to go where their friends are so we would recommend it would be easiest to go to the event at your son’s school. However, that doesn’t prevent you from going to another one,” McGuire said.

At sign-up locations, McGuire said a Cub Scouts pack will be there ready to meet each of the interested families.

“A chance for any new parent or boys to ask questions,” McGuire said. “If you’re short on time the way we have it set up is open house style. So if you just have a few minutes feel free to drop by, fill out the paperwork and get all your questions answered and go.”

McGuire said the sign-up fee is $8 and covers the child’s scouting membership until the end of 2017.
