$20.17 special on animal shelter adoptions

Due to a high number of pets in the St. Joseph Animal Shelter a special on adoptions is being held this weekend.

According to a news release, the Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Joseph, LLC, is holding an event which offers a reduction in adoption fees for dogs and cats adopted this Friday and Saturday, August 11th and 12th. Special pricing of $20.17 is the cost to adopt any dog or cat this weekend only.

Some of the animals available for adoption are temporarily on display at Petsmart, 4226 N Belt Hwy, or at Petco, 5201 N. Belt Hwy. The majority of the dogs and cats are located at the shelter, 701 Lower Lake Road, and shelter hours are 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Joseph, LLC’s, Facebook page has photos of available animals, as does the animal shelter web page, where the location of the animal is also listed so you can meet them
in person before adopting

Temps in the low 80s over the weekend

Friday will start off muggy with some spotty rain showers over the area, mainly south of the Missouri River. These showers will start to dissipate and move south by late morning leading to a partly cloudy afternoon with highs in the lower 80s. This nice weather will continue into Saturday with partly clouds skies and unseasonably cooler lower 80s in place over the region. Some unsettled weather will start to move into the area Sunday from the southwest creating the chance of scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, mainly from the KC Metro and south. Here’s the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service:

Man killed in Edmond shooting identified by police

(Update 9:25 a.m. Friday) – Authorities have identified a man shot and killed in an overnight shooting on Edmond St.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said 27-year-old Anthony C. Minor Jr. has been identified as the shooting victim who was killed in the incident.

Wilson said officers responded to 2010 Edmond St. around 11:23 p.m. Thursday in reference to a shooting call. After they arrived, officers found Minor with a gunshot wound laying on the sidewalk in front of the residence. Officers along with EMS personnel performed CPR on Minor but were unsuccessful. Minor was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man was arrest at the scene. Wilson said as of 9:24 a.m. Friday no charges have been filed at that time and the investigation is ongoing.

(7 a.m.) – One man is dead after an overnight shooting in the 2000 block of Edmond Street in St. Joseph.

According to Sgt. Steve McClintick with the St. Joseph Police Department, officers responded to a call of a possible house break-in at 11:23 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, they found a man outside the residence in his late 20s had suffered a single gunshot wound to the stomach. Officer’s life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.

McClintick said the shooter, a man in his mid to late 20s who lived at the residence was taken into custody.

McClintick said it appears some kind of argument lead up to the shooting but the incident is still under investigation.

 

St. Joseph man pleads guilty to rape

A St. Joseph man pleaded guilty to a felony of second-degree rape Wednesday in Buchanan County.

As we previously reported, Vernail Moore Sr. was charged in January after prosecutors said he entered his neighbor’s home “unannounced and uninvited” and raped the victim.  Judge Patrick Robb set a sentencing hearing for September 25.

Moore remains behind bars in the Buchanan County Jail on $50,000 bail.

 

Cameron teen killed in one vehicle crash

A Cameron teen has died after a one vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in DeKalb County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Matthew A. Eberhart was driving a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix west on Southeast Gridley Road four miles northwest of Cameron around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Eberhart lost control of the vehicle, which then went off the north side of the road, into a creek bed and overturned, coming to rest on its top. According to the crash report, Eberhart was not wearing a seat belt.

He was taken by ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph were he was pronounced deceased at 9:56 p.m.

Periodic chances for rain will continue late week into the weekend, but heavy rain will remain south of the area. Police have person of interest in Brittany Village shooting

The St. Joseph Police Department has a person of interest in connection with a July apartment shooting which resulted in one death and two serious injuries.

As we previously reported, 42-year-old Kias Bernard was killed and 31-year-old Jass Walter and 37-year-old Fasios Bernard were hospitalized with serious injuries July 20 after a shooting at Brittany Village Apartments located at 1605 N. 36th St.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said, while the case is still an open investigation, detectives have been able to identify a person of interest.  Wilson said detectives still have a substantial amount of work in the investigation.  As of Wednesday charges have not been filed.

Police continue to investigate string of armed robberies

Officers with the St. Joseph Police Department have seized another stolen vehicle they believe was used in a recent string of armed robberies.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said officers seized a vehicle Monday they believe was used in one of the robberies.  As we previously reported, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office recovered another vehicle believed to have been used in a robbery July 30 on fire at 10500 SE 32nd Rd. Wilson said at this point, at least four of the recent robberies are believed to be tied together.

Friday shortly after 7 p.m. the Road Star gas station at 3215 S. 22nd was robbed when a suspect described as a white man with a skinny build wearing a bandanna displayed a pistol and took off with an undisclosed amount of money in a white two-door vehicle.

August 2, the Quick Stop located at 6739 Memorial Highway was robbed at gun point.

July 30, the Hawkins 66 at 6401 Memorial Highway was robbed at gun point.

July 28, the Cenex located at 1029 Garfield was robbed at gunpoint.

Wilson said it’s unclear if the robbery of the K-2 Smokes and Gifts located at 1602 St. Joseph Avenue on July 25 is connected.

Man accused of assaulting and robbing victim at Krug Park

A St. Joseph man is accused of assaulting and robbing a man at Krug Park.

Mickey Nyman, 24 is charged in Buchanan County with a class-D felony of stealing.

According to court documents, on July 31 Nyman and a co-defendant are accused of luring a victim to Krug Park with the intent of robbing him. Det. Frank Till with the St. Joseph Police Department said once the victim arrived Nyman distracted him while the co-defendant approached from out of sight.

“The co-defendant then began assaulting the victim and the defendant joined in,” Till said. “They then stole numerous items from him including his vehicle.”

Till said Nyman has previous assault convictions and is currently a suspect in other ongoing investigations including a domestic assault case.

Nyman is being held without bail. An arraignment is scheduled for Friday.

Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney, Dwight Scroggins said Wednesday that no additional defendants have been charged in connection with the incident.

Downtown Library closed due to transformer issue

The St. Joseph Public Library announced Wednesday that its Downtown branch is closed due to a power outage.

Library Director, Mary Beth Revels said the outage is due to a transformer replacement. According to Kansas City Power and Light’s power outage map, fewer than five customers are impacted by the outage and crews are assigned.

Revels said KCP&L is working to replace the transformer. Regular library hours at the Downtown branch are expected to resume Thursday.
