Man accused of trying to steal Good Samaritan’s vehicle

MCNISH, MICHAEL ANDREW

A St. Joseph man allegedly tried to steal a man’s vehicle at gunpoint who stopped to help him after a crash.

Michael McNish, 27 is charged in Buchanan County with a felony of second-degree robbery.

According to court documents, Friday in the 4100 block of Picket Road officers with the St. Joseph Police Department responded to what was initially reported as an accident only to begin investigating a robbery.

“Officers were able to determine that the defendant had wrecked a vehicle at that location that he had earlier stolen,” said Det. Frank Till with the St. Joseph Police Department. “When a passerby, not knowing that it was anything more then an accident, stopped to assist the defendant, the defendant then jumped in the vehicle of the passerby and attempted to steal it.”

Till said a struggle ensued and McNish wrecked that vehicle while the victim was trying to prevent him from leaving in his car.

“He had a loaded handgun on him when he tried to steal this victim’s vehicle and was threatening the victim with the use of the weapon,” Till said. “The defendant is a suspect in two separate carjackings.”

McNish is currently being held on $25,000 cash only bail.  He’s due in court Tuesday for an arraignment.

Suspect arrested again after additional charges filed in sodomy case

William Marshall was arrested Friday

A St Joe man free on bond in a sex-crime case is back in jail on three new counts allegedly involving the same night with the same 16-year-old girl.

As we reported, William Marshall, 41, is already charged with first-degree sodomy. He is currently scheduled for jury trial in October in that case. Circuit Judge Patrick Robb set conditions for bail, including a 9 pm curfew seven days a week, no direct or indirect contact with the victim, and a requirement that he reside with his mother and step-father.

Officials say Marshall presents a danger to the victim. Prosecutors said last month that he allegedly threatened the girl’s mother on the telephone.

On Friday, prosecutors filed three new counts of sodomy and one count of first-degree sexual abuse against Marshall. The three new allegations concern the same girl on the same night as the first complaint. Marshall was arrested on the new warrant on Friday and is behind bars at the Buchanan County Jail.

Marshall is scheduled for a first appearance in the new case Tuesday at 9 am before Associate Circuit Judge Keith Marquart. Bail on the new charges was set at $50,000, including $5,000 cash and $45,000 surety.

Olathe man faces hate crime indictment, possible death penalty, in bar shooting

Adam Purinton
An Olathe man charged with fatally shooting an Indian national at a suburban Kansas City bar has been indicted on federal hate crime and firearms charges.

The Justice Department announced Friday that Adam Purinton, of Olathe, Kansas, was indicted by a federal grand jury.

The indictment accuses Purinton of shooting and killing Srinivas Kuchibhotla because of Kuchibhotla’s “actual and perceived” race, color, religion and national origin.

The indictment also accuses Purinton of attempting to kill Alok Madasani because of his “actual and perceived” race, color, religion and national origin. Witnesses said Purinton yelled at the two Indian men to “get out of my country” just before the attack, believing they were from Iran. After the shooting, Purinton drove to an Applebee’s restaurant in Clinton, Missouri, where he allegedly told a bartender he “…shot and killed two Iranian people in Olathe.”

Purinton is jailed in Johnson County, Kansas, on $2 million bond on murder and attempted murder charges. His public defender, Michael McCulloch, did not immediately return a message seeking comment

The indictment alleges that Purinton committed the offenses after substantial planning and premeditation, attempted to kill more than one person in a single criminal episode, and knowingly created a grave risk of death to others on the scene.

An affidavit released in March said Madasani told detectives that the gunman asked if their “status was legal” before he opened fire.

The statute authorizes a maximum penalty of death or life in prison. The Justice Department will determine at a later date whether to seek the death penalty.
