Authorities rescue boaters on Missouri River

Two adults and four children are safe after a boat got stuck on a wing dike Monday on the Missouri River in St. Joseph.

Sgt. Jake Angle with the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H said water patrol officers and patrol officers were dispatched around 12:17 p.m. after receiving a distress call of a boat that was stuck about a mile north of the French Bottoms boat dock.

“The call was that they were stuck on a wing dike and taking on water,” Angle said.

He said the St. Joseph Fire Department had already responded to the scene when water patrol arrived. Angle said a trooper with the patrol boarded the boat with the fire department.

Prior to arrival, the boat had become unstuck from the wing dike and the boat had floated to shore on the Kansas side of the river.

“St. Joe fire with our officer on board rescued the two adults and the four kids,” Angle said.

No injuries were reported.

Olathe Man Pleads Guilty In $8 Million Investment Scam

A Kansas man pleaded guilty Monday to stealing more than $8 million from a Turkish investor.

Nagy Shehata, 57, Olathe, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said. In his plea, Shehata admitted the crime occurred while he was president of Premier Investment Group, a corporation registered in Missouri.

During that time, Shehata formed a joint partnership with co-defendant Laura Lee Sorsby, a Texas resident who conducted business through a company called Can Am International.

The victim was a Turkish resident who was the founder of a hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. The defendants offered the victim the opportunity to invest in a project that started out as a plan to build a hospital in Syria and evolved into a plan to build a shopping mall in Iraq. Based on the defendants’ false statements, the victim transferred money to Shehata’s bank in New York. Shehata wired the money from New York to his bank accounts in Kansas.

The defendants did not use the money for the hospital or shopping mall projects. Instead, Shehata bought an $111,000 car and an $855,000 house.

Sentencing will be set for a later time. Shehata faces up to 20 years in federal prison and restitution of more than $8.2 million.

Group to host forum for those who have lost loved ones through suicide

A new support group is hoping to give those dealing with the loss of a loved one through suicide a safe place to talk about issues with the hope that it may lead to healing.

Project Hope will hold its first meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Living Community of St. Joseph located at 1202 Heartland Road. Cheri Dedman with Project Hope said they plan to host meetings going forward on the first Monday of each month.

“Your perspective on life really changes because somebody that you love has decided to end their life and it does pose a lot of questions. It makes most people rethink their life, about who they are, and their purpose and how they can get to a point where they feel like they can live normally again,” Dedman said.

She said the meeting is free and open to all adult survivors of suicide.

“Nothing is required. Just come where people have a common sorrow and find out if this might be a way that you can begin the healing process,” she said.

The program is not faith-based, or counseling or clinical. Dedman said it is a support group.

“As a facilitator I’m just there to listen. I’m probably not going to have anything to offer other than hope. If we need referrals there’s plenty of places that we can refer people for counseling,” she said. “We’re not designed to grieve alone. That is, I think one of the biggest areas with suicide loss is that people isolate themselves and they’re alone. What Project Hope is all about is community.”

Michael McCarty

A judge has granted bail for a man charged as a persistent offender with felony drunk driving.

Associate Judge Keith Marquart originally ruled that Michael McCarty was a danger to the community and denied bail. But after McCarty waived his preliminary hearing on Thursday, Marquart relented, and allowed the defendant to post a $1,000 surety bond. By Sunday, McCarty was still in custody.

Officials say Michael McCarty has at least three prior DWI convictions. A court affidavit says witnesses spotted a motorist swerving between lanes and stopping and appearing to pass out along Lovers Lane May 10. Officers say they found him in the back of his vehicle with the keys in his hands. As we reported, the vehicle was parked on the wrong side of the street in the traffic lane, according to the court document.

Police said they smelled “…the odor of adult beverage on his person and in the vehicle.” The affidavit says arresting officer found a half-gallon bottle of vodka in the vehicle, which was more than half empty. He allegedly told officers he “…just wanted to drive around and get wasted for his birthday, and admitted to driving.” Police say he refused a breath test at the scene. Officials say he was also driving without a license.

Judge Marquart ordered McCarty bound over for trial in Circuit Court. Arraignment is scheduled June 19 at 8:30 a.m. before Circuit Judge Patrick Robb.
