11 indicted for drug crimes in Nodaway County

jury, hammer, courtAn undercover investigation in Nodaway County has resulted in nearly a dozen arrests.

According to a news release from the Maryville Department of Public Safety, law enforcement agencies  in northwest Missouri have been busy this week conducting arrest warrant services after a Grand Jury handed down 11 indictments for people allegedly involving in distributing drugs.  The warrants are a result of a multi-agency investigation that started in the fall of 2016.

The sales allegedly involved marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and prescription drugs.  The investigation used an undercover operative who was under the supervision of Maryville Public Safety and Buchanan County Drug Strike Force agencies.

The release states that since 2012, Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rice has used a Grand Jury on undercover drug investigations, sexual offenses against children, and domestic violence.  A Grand Jury indictment allows law enforcement to conduct many controlled buys with the same undercover operative before formally charging the accused.  To return an indictment, a Grand Jury must find probable cause exists that the accused committed the offense.

Anyone with knowledge of or who suspects drug trafficking is asked to call Maryville Public Safety at 660-562-3209 or the Nodaway Count Sheriff’s Office at 660-582-7451.

Red Cross to celebrate 100 years of service in northwest Missouri

red crossThe Red Cross of Northwest Missouri is celebrating 100 years of service in northwest Missouri with a gala event later this month.

The deadline to purchase tickets to the May 18th dinner at Missouri Western State University in the Faulkerson Center is next week. Red Cross Ex. Director Angie Springs said David Sanderson, who was one of the passengers on US Airways Flight 1549, which landed in the Hudson in 2009 will be the featured speaker.

“Sanderson was the last passenger off the plane and was largely responsible for making sure many others made it out safely,” Springs said. “He will share his lessons of that day and explain how leadership, resourcefulness and managing the mind in a crisis can allow anyone to step up and overcome his or her own, ‘personal plane crash.'”

Springs said the incident was portrayed in a 2016 movie “Sully,” in which Tom Hanks portrayed Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who became a hero after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson in order to save the flight’s passengers and crew.

Tickets for the event, which include dinner and the program with Sanderson, are $50 each and can be purchased by calling 816.232.8439 or by registering online at www.redcross.org/NWMO-100Years100Heroes. Deadline for purchasing tickets is May 10.
