Warm temperatures continue

Tree removal begins for Blacksnake Creek project

Tree removal has begun to clear the way for the stormwater conveyance from Blacksnake Creek to the Missouri River. The project is part of the Blacksnake Creek Stormwater Separation Project, one of nine projects contained in the city’s Long Term Control Plan,

There are several areas along the conveyance route where they are cutting down trees.

Worley Services Inc. was awarded the contract for the tree removal process. This portion of the project is expected to be complete later this spring.

Jason Michael Tassi
1982-2017

Friday, February 17, 2017.
He was born October 9, 1982 to loving parents, Doug and Joanie (Bimbi) Tassi. Together with his older brother Sean, Jason had many adventures in Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Washington, Kansas and South Dakota. He talked to his mom every day and enjoyed outdoor trips with his dad. Jason was a fun-loving, kind, gentle and a fierce hockey player. In May 2012, Jason became the proud father of Preston Tassi. He delighted in his son and marveled at his ability.
Jason attended Electricians School in Des Moines, Iowa. He took pride in his workmanship and was known for getting the job done and the soulful music he played while doing it. Jason loved family gatherings and traditions. He made (and shared) the best jerky in town and spent hours twisting tiny tortellini pasta each Christmas season.
Jason will be lovingly remembered by parents, Doug and Joanie; son, Preston; fiancé Lacey Rose, and her son Jackson; brother, Sean Tassi (Elizabeth); grandfather, Roland Bimbi; He will also be dearly missed by his niece, Greta Tassi, and nephew, August Tassi.
Jason was preceded in death by his grandparents, Betty Bimbi and Ernest and Ethel Tassi.

Terry “Mario” Lee Harless
1951-2017

He was born May 14, 1951 in St. Joseph, Missouri son of Geraldine & Raymond Harless. He married Alice Chaney on December 29, 1990, and she survives of the home. He graduated from Central High School, and retired from Central High School after 25 years of service as the Custodian and Maintenance Engineer. He enjoyed NASCAR, KC Chiefs & KC Royals, Old Cars, he also enjoyed going to his daughters volleyball and basketball games. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church RLDS. Mario was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Harless. He is survived by wife, Alice Harless of the home, mother, Geraldine L Harless of St. Joseph, MO, daughters, Holly Kress (Bryce Dixon ) of St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Jamie Harless, and son, Cody Harless, grandchildren, Chelsey, Shane, Danica, Kaelyn, Carter, Hayden, and Hudson, and his brother, Bob (Mary) Harless of St. Joseph, MO. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Tuesday with a Celebration of Life to start at 7:00 PM at the Rupp Funeral Home. He will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home following the services.

Virginia L Spillman
1922-2017

unnamedVirginia L Spillman, 94, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017 in a Saint Joseph, MO health care center. She was born August 12, 1922 in Troy, KS, daughter of the late Malinda and Louis Martin. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1940. She was a Homemaker, who was always a good dresser, who loved to dance and spend time with her family. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harley Spillman, two brothers, Louis and Howard Martin, and a grandson, Wes Nigh. Survivors include, four daughters, Diane L. Wright, Harlene (James) Pankau, Connie (Dick) Smothers, and Shirley Melton (Larry Herring) all of St. Joseph, MO, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Rupp Funeral Home with Elder Sam Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery . Memorials are requested to the Compasive Care Hospice.

(Update) – Authorities identify man shot and killed in officer-involved incident

(10:30 a.m.) – Authorities have identified the St. Joseph man killed in an officer-involved shooting early Monday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jason Fanning, 27 was fatally wounded in the shooting incident that took place around 2:37 at the intersection of 20th and Charles St.

As we previously reported, Captain Jeff Wilson said an officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at 20th and Charles Street and in the process of investigating, the officer fired shots. Fanning, allegedly the driver of the vehicle was hit during the incident and transported to the hospital where he later died.



Sgt. Jake Angle with the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the St. Joseph Police Department has requested the patrol investigate the incident.  Capt. Wilson said the officer has been placed on administrative leave. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday afternoon.  The patrol is continuing to investigate.

(UPDATE 7:50 a.m.) – A fatal officer involved shooting early Monday morning is under investigation.

(5 a.m.) – The St. Joseph Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol are investigating a shooting incident involving an officer that occurred early Monday morning.

According to Sgt. Brett Kelley with the police department, the incident began at 2:39 a.m. at 20th Street and Charles Street. Sgt. Kelley confirmed someone was injured. He said more details will be available later in the day as the investigation continues.

Trenton man injured in crash involving possible DWI

wpid-mshp-logo111.jpgA man is in the hospital after a crash Sunday in Grundy County possibly involving a DWI.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kenton Whitt, 40 of Trenton was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra shortly before 8 p.m. on US 65 about 7 miles north of Trenton.  The patrol said Whitt lost control of the vehicle and began skidding on the roadway then went off the west side of the road, down an embankment and into a ravine where the vehicle hit some large rocks.  The vehicle then went airborne and hit some trees before coming to rest in the ravine facing east on its tailgate. Whitt was transported with what was described as moderate injuries to Wright Memorial Hospital. According to the patrol’s arrest reports, Whitt is being investigated for allegedly driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving, and no seat belt.

8-year-old seriously hurt riding dirt bike

emergency featureA Stanberry child was transported with serious injuries after a dirt bike crash Sunday in Gentry County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the child was driving a Honda dirt bike (50 CC) in the front yard of a home on 440th Rd. just two miles north of Stanberry around 5:10 p.m.  The patrol said the kid ran into a fence and was thrown from the bike.  He was transported by ambulance to the ambulance barn and then life-flighted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.   His injuries were listed as serious on the patrol’s crash report.

Amazonia woman killed in rollover crash

An Amazonia woman was killed Saturday morning in a rollover crash north of Savannah.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Haylee Smither, 21, was a passenger in a BMW that careened off of U.S. Highway 71 at Andrew County Road 152 shortly after 9:30 a.m. Satuday.

According to the crash report the car overturned several times ejecting Smither and then landing on top of her. She was transported to Mosaic Life Care where she later died.

The driver, 19-year-old Keith Ellis, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Mosaic Life Care for treatment.

Parks and Rec announces registration for spring programs

parks deptThe City of St. Joseph Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities department announced registration dates for spring activities.

The Rec Center will host an adult pickleball league on Thursday nights for eight weeks. The first match will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16th. The league will only consist of doubles matches played on a badminton-sized court using a wooden or composite pickleball paddle, pickleball net, and a small plastic wiffle ball. Cost is $70.00 per team or $35.00 per person. Registration is open now through Thursday, March 2nd.  Contact the REC Center at (816) 271-5512 for more information.

Registration is underway for WelcomeMat Youth Judo classes. This a six week class session beginning March 14th with classes to be held at the REC Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Little Ballers summer basketball league registration begins on March 1st and runs thru April 12th. Little Ballers is specifically for Kindergarten through third grade with games played on Wednesday evenings. Register for Little Ballers at the REC Center.
