Victim identified, two charged with murder in Clinton County

Two men face murder and other charges in connection with the discovery of a body in Clinton County last weekend. Sheriff Larry Fish identified the skeletal remains as those of Donald “DC” Hadden of Liberty, who had been reported missing in July of 2015. Last Sunday, a resident called authorities to report finding the remains near Cannonball Road and Missouri Highway 33.

Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Gagnon said charges were filed against two suspects this week. Joseph “Chaos” Seward and Micha Wynes are each charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. A judge set bail in each case at $500,000.

Court documents filed in the cases tell a story of heroin, theft and murder. According to court affidavits, the victim was a heroin user who was believed by his accused killers of being a confidential informant, a “snitch.” They believed Hadden stole identification, cash and drugs from fourth man, while that man was suffering from a heroin overdose.

Out for revenge, the man threatened Wynes if he didn’t help locate Hadden, according to the affidavit.

The probable cause statement describes how the killing allegedly unfolded in July, 2015. The defendants allegedly offered to “get DC to a bus station to get him out of town,” but “DC responded that he wasn’t going anywhere” and that “he wasn’t going to run.” Then, according to the affidavit, they drove around “in the middle of nowhere” until they ran out of gas.

In an interview with investigators, Seward allegedly told authorities he saw Wynes shoot Hadden.

According to the affidavit, Wynes was then able to flag down a female motorist, who left and later returned with gasoline so they could leave the scene.

The new investigation began, and was linked to the missing persons case, after a resident called authorities on Sunday to report spotting the skull and other bones. The victim was originally reported missing by his mother on July 9, 2015. According to the affidavit, the mother called his cell phone and spoke with a restaurant manager who says the phone was found in the parking lot. It was returned to the victim’s girlfriend, who says she discovered through his text messages that the victim was a confidential informant and the girlfriend believed he was killed by one of the defendants.

Police say they recovered a wallet near the remains of the victim, which turned out to belong to the man who suffered the OD. Police say they also found spent shotgun shell casings at the scene.

Online court records do not reflect any scheduled hearings in the case or legal representation for the two defendants.

Stolen mower falls out in police pursuit

silver sjpd patrol carThe St. Joseph Police Department recovered stolen lawn equipment Tuesday morning when it allegedly fell out of a moving van.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said officers responded shortly before 3:30 a.m. to an alarm at Tractor Supply Company located at 3027 S. Belt Highway. He said when the officer was responding she noticed a gold mini-van parked in the lot of Red Racks, just north of TSC with the rear hatch open.

“Officer Copeland observed the van pulling out of Red Racks and turning South on the Belt, without its headlights on,” Wilson said. “Copeland turned around and attempted to catch up to the van as it continued South on the Belt, then West on Pear Street.”

Wilson said the officer was unable to get close enough to get a license plate before a push mower and a garden tiller fell out of the back of the van onto the road.

“She discontinued attempting to catch up to the van and went out with the garden/lawn equipment items,” Wilson said. “It was later determined both items came from TSC. They were photographed and returned to the business.”

As of Wednesday afternoon police did not have anyone in custody in connection with the investigation. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 238-TIPS.

Forums to be held on immigration in St. Joseph

The Interfaith Alliance for Immigrants is hosting upcoming forums to talk about immigration in the St. Joseph community.

IAI is an interfaith group advocating for justice, hospitality, human rights and respect for immigrants and their families.  Dave Howery, the Ex. Dir of InterServ said IAI has been in existence for around six years.

“We know the interest is there in how do we provide that support and involvement.  At the community level knowing that there has to be some sort of a dialogue,”Howery said. “Without that discussion then fear and anxiety takes on a roles of its own.  We start to demonize, we start to ostracize by saying, ‘well let’s disregard that.’ So how do we counter that?… It’s that discussing between one another. What are those issues that we see that maybe divide us but also bring us closer together.”

Three forums to talk about health, education, business and resources immigrants utilize in the community are slated over the next several months. Howery said the forums are to get people thinking about how immigrants fit in.

“How do we begin to look at how do we benefit from that, past and present.  St. Joseph has a good background at that,” Howery said. “My grandparents on my maternal side came from Mexico.  They weren’t citizens, they didn’t speak English, they had nine children.  It’s always that second or third generation who begins that move from integration into the community to assimilation and we’ve all experienced that.”

The first forum will take place Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church located at 301 N. 7th St.  The forum will touch on Education and Health with speakers Nancy Clisbee (Webster), Dr. Robert Stuber (SWB), and Fumi Cheever (MWSU).

“We talk about assimilation, coming into American and assimilating. We find that one of the barriers is language,” said Ramadhan Washington with the St. Joseph Islamic Center. “We have Ms. Clisbee who will be there from Webster, where they teach the bilingual, second language.”

The second forum will tackle social services and resources on March 21 at 7 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church located at 3524 St. Joseph Ave. Speakers at that forum will include Kim Kempf and Carrie Turner (YWCA), and Donna Salcido (Inter-Serv).

The final forum will take place April 18th at 7 p.m. at St. James Church located at 5814 King Hill Ave.  Employment and business will be the topic with speakers Chief Chris Connally (SJPD), and Pat Lilly (Chamber of Commerce).

Then in May, IAI will host a prayerful gathering on the 24th the St. Joseph Islamic Center.

“Having somebody talk about that relationship and understanding about the various religions in Islam,” Howrey said. “We’ve been doing the prayerful gatherings on an annual basis, maybe twice a year to bring the community together as part of that sort of celebration, recognition of the gifts that people bring from different cultures.”

Missouri man charged with bank robbery in NE Kansas

USDOJ coinA Missouri man has been arrested and charged with robbing a bank in Osage City, Kan.

Hunter Lee Prewitt, 28, Mountain Grove, was charged Monday with one count of bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said. It is alleged that on Jan. 25, 2017, Prewitt robbed the Landmark National Bank at 106 South 6th Street in Osage City.

According to court records, Prewitt gave a teller a note saying: “This a robbery. Give me all one hundreds, fifties and twenties.” He left the bank with cash and drove away in a white pickup truck.

Starting with a description of the truck, investigators obtained video surveillance photos and followed Prewitt’s movements including a stop at a gas station in Osage City before the robbery and a pawn shop in Lyndon, Kan.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol used that information to identify a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup registered to Prewitt. A crime intelligence analyst with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation conducted a search of law enforcement tag readers and he found more information on Prewitt and the truck. Prewitt was arrested outside Springfield, Mo.

If convicted, Prewitt faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

20170214_070555(Update) – Two emergency responders were injured Tuesday morning in a crash on Frederick Avenue.

Officer Patrick Zeamer with the St. Joseph Police Department said crews responded to the crash on Frederick at I-29 around 6:12 a.m.

“An ambulance was traveling eastbound on Frederick approaching I-29 on the west side of the interstate.  A midsize car had a flashing yellow arrow and made a left turn in front of the ambulance striking it on the driver’s corner,” he said. “The ambulance continued up into the concrete barrier which kept it from going down onto I-29.  It finally came to rest on its passenger side wedged between the two concrete barriers.”

Both the driver of the ambulance, a 45-year-old St. Joseph man and the paramedic, a 22-year-old Kansas City woman were transported by other ambulances for treatment of minor injuries.  They have since been treated and released.

Zeamer said the paramedics were on their way back to the office for the day and did not have any patients on board and lights were not running.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 54-year-old Nebraska woman was issued a ticket for failing to yield.
