(Update) Space Heater blamed for St. Joe Ave. fire

st-joe-ave-house-fireA faulty space heater is blamed for an apartment fire on St. Joseph Ave. Thursday that caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage and left five people without a home.

As we reported earlier, the St. Joseph Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a house with four apartments at 4104 St. Joseph Avenue.

Fire Inspector Steve Henrichson says fire burned from one end to the other of an apartment on the first floor. The apartment above that had some smoke and plumbing damage. He says the smoke traveled up the wall and into the attic. Henrichson says the other two apartments were “pretty much untouched.”

The fire complicated traffic on the Avenue right as the nearby Robidoux Middle School was letting out students for the day. St. Joseph police directed traffic, as just one lane of roadway had to serve both directions of travel.

The American Red Cross was called in to help five people living in the burned-out apartment, which Henrichson says will need a major rehab. He estimated fire damage at about $40,000. There were no injuries reported.

As a result of the fire last week at the Pioneer Building at 505-514 Francis Street, an emergency demolition has been ordered by the city of St. Joseph. City officials say that only then can the investigation begin into the cause of the fire.

The property owner will have ten business days to take down the building and get a structural engineer to render the area safe for entry.

A City of St. Joseph news release says that during this period “…the roadways will remain closed and necessary measures taken to safely access the adjacent businesses.”

“At the conclusion of the ten-day period, which will be 1pm, December 15, 2016, one lane each of Francis Street and 5th Street will reopen to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and the adjacent businesses fully accessible to the general public,” according to the news release.

“Once the area is safe for entry on December 15, the investigation into the cause of the fire will commence.”

Former Wyandotte County engineer charged with taking bribes, laundering funds through church

unified govt WYCO KCK loglA minister and former engineer for the Wyandotte County Unified Government has been accused of taking more than $17,000 in bribes in return for street-repair contracts.

U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said a federal indictment was unsealed Thursday charging Willie D. Jones, 58, Kansas City, Kan., with three counts of accepting bribes and five counts of money laundering. He’s accused of routing some of the bribes through the bank account his church.

The indictment alleged Jones accepted three bribes — $6,740, $5,530 and $5,100 – from an individual who owned a company that obtained contracts to do street repairs for the Unified Government. It is alleged Jones routed the bribe money through his bank account and an account belonging to Paradise Missionary Baptist Church of Kansas City, where Jones was a minister.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 on each bribery count, and up to 20 years and a fine up to$250,000 on each money laundering count. The FBI investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tris Hunt is prosecuting.

Fire damages home on St. Joe Ave.

A fire was reported Thursday afternoon in a large house in the 4100 block of St. Joseph Ave.

Firefighters entered the home and removed at least one large, smoldering ember, but the blaze appeared to have spread into the upper reaches of the home. By about 2:30 p.m. smoke was rising from the roof of the home.

Initial reports indicated everyone made it out okay, although there was a reported language barrier with the person reporting the fire.

St. Joseph police were directing traffic, taking turns letting northbound and southbound traffic through. Robidoux Middle School is about a block north, and a lot of departing school buses added to the traffic congestion. The bulk of the fire units cleared the scene by about 4 p.m. and police were able to open traffic lanes in both directions.

Mumps case reported in northwest Missouri

Mumps virus
Mumps virus

The Grundy County Health Department said Wednesday it’s investigating several suspected cases of Mumps with one confirmed case in Grundy County.

On its blog the department said at this time there has been one lab-confirmed case of the illness and several suspected cases in area residents.

“Mumps is a viral illness. The symptoms of mumps are: body aches, loss of appetite, fatigue, headache, low grade fever and parotitis. Parotitis is an inflammation of one or both of the major salivary (parotid) glands located on either side of the face,” the health department said.

A Mumps outbreak recently took place at the University of Missouri with 73 cases confirmed.  As we previously reported, the outbreak began in early November.

The Grundy County Health Department said Missouri law requires children to have two MMR vaccinations before attending school.  However, officials have said the vaccine does not prevent 100 percent of infections.

Physician’s Assistant pleads guilty to dispensing misbranded and adulterated cosmetic injection products

USDOJ colorA physician’s assistant who provided aesthetic services including Botox injections to clients in Garden City and Scott City pleaded guilty Thursday to violating the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

Joel Erskin, 53, Garden City, Kan. pleaded guilty to one count of receiving and dispensing misbranded drugs. In his plea, he admitted the crimes occurred while he owned and operated Renovo Medical, LLC, also known as University Medical.

Erskin purchased cheaper versions of Botox® and Juvederm® from Canadian pharmacies. The Botox he purchased was misbranded and failed to meet labeling requirements. The Juvederm was adulterated and not approved for distribution in the United States.

Erskin did not inform his clients that the drugs were purchased from Canada and did not meet federal standards.

U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said sentencing is set for Dec. 20. Erskin faces a penalty of up to a year imprisonment and a fine up to $100,000.
