Suspect in Kaytlin Root stabbing waives preliminary hearing

Sebastian Dowell
Sebastian Dowell

An 18-year-old St. Joseph man was bound over for trial Monday on a murder charge in connection with the fatal stabbing of Kaytlin Root at Krug Park last month.

As we reported earlier, Sebastian Dowell was charged with second-degree murder nearly a week after Root’s body was found by a runner off the bike trail at the park October 16.

Judge Keith Marquart scheduled the case for Circuit Court arraignment December 8 before Judge Daniel Kellogg.

Defense lawyer Christopher Belts withdrew a motion to set bond in the case, and said he will refile that motion in Circuit Court.  In the meantime, Dowell is being held without bail.

A 17-year-old has also been charged with a class A felony of murder in the second degree.  Due to the girl’s age at the time of the offense the charge was filed in juvenile court.

Hundreds line up for turkey distribution

2nd-harvest-lineup

Hundreds of people were lined up along Grand Ave. Monday for the annual Thanksgiving turkey distribution at 2nd Harvest Community Food Bank. An hour before the distribution started, the line of cars extended all the way up Grand to Lover’s Lane.

They needn’t have bothered.

“If they have a voucher, they’re guaranteed to get a turkey along with a box of food,” says Michelle Fagerstone, the Director of Marketing for 2nd Harvest.

Fagerstone says they line up as much to see old friends as to get their Thanksgiving meal.

“On Super Turkey Day we are scheduled to distribute right at 1500 full family turkey meals. So they will get a frozen turkey and they will get a box of food that has basic Thanksgiving Day menu items in it,” Fagerstone said.

“There will be some stuffing, some canned yams, some pie mixes, there will be some vegetables in there,” Fagerstone said. And this year she says they’ll be handing out some watermelon as well.

Fagerstone said the effort is a way to make sure even those who may not be able to afford it can have a Thanskgiving meal.

Volunteers began handing out the meals at Second Harvest at one p.m. Fagerstone expected them to be on hand until the last bird was donated.

Yehia Hassen, 36, formerly of Richmond, Va., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana, and one count of attempted money laundering.

In his plea, he admitted he was part of a large drug trafficking organization that operated in Kansas City, Kan. Drugs smuggled from Mexico were transported to Kansas City and then to Hassen in Richmond.

In all, Hassen received more than 100 kilograms of cocaine shipped to him from Kansas City. The organization used commercial and personal vehicles to ship drugs to Kansas City and transport cash to Mexico to pay for drugs.

While Hassen was on release pending sentencing, he absconded. He used false identities to remain free until he was arrested in the Republic of Cyprus on April 28, 2016.
