When she came to Guthrie, Okla., in 1940, to attend the first vows of Sister Cabrini, her sister, the prioress suggested that Benedicta finish high school with the Benedictines in Guthrie. She did, entering the monastery in 1942, several months before graduation. She was soon asked to accompany community prayers on the organ. She taught in parish and community schools and also served as liturgical minister. After receiving her graduate degree in liturgical studies at The Catholic University of America, she was director of the Tulsa Office of Liturgy from 1978-83. As part of Red Plains Monastery in Oklahoma, she served on its monastic council, and in its formation and oblate programs. In 1983, her focus became spiritual direction, retreats and training others in ministry. When the Red Plains Monastery closed in 2010, the sisters there joined the Benedictines in Atchison. She continued to direct the Retreat in Daily Life in Atchison for several years. Fugitive sex offender may have removed GPS tracking device

Steven L Burns

Livingston County deputies continue their efforts to locate an unregistered sex offender who may have removed his GPS bracelet.

Sheriff Steve Cox says Steven L. Burns, 30, of Utica is wanted on a “no bond” warrant dated September 29. He’s wanted for an alleged probation violation after violating sex-offender registration requirements.

On September 30, deputies and Missouri Probation/Parole Officers tracked Mr. Burns to a remote location north west of Utica in a heavily wooded area using the GPS signal. Officers conducted a lengthy search and did not find Mr. Burns. Cox says they believe that Mr. Burns somehow removed the GPS bracelet after learning of the arrest warrant.

Cox says Mr. Burns parked his vehicle at home yesterday and left on foot or with another person.

“Evidence also suggests that Mr. Burns has or is now receiving assistance from at least one person outside the immediate family,” Cox says in a news release. “Anyone who provides assistance to a fugitive may also be arrested for a felony violation.”

Burns was convicted in a 2008 forcible rape and forcible sodomy case.

Cox says they hope to take Burns into custody without incident.

“The best solution for Mr. Burns before additional charges are sought is to immediately surrender to law enforcement.”

Kansas woman convicted in killing of man who was burned

Cherokee County Kansas Sheriff badget logoCOLUMBUS, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman has been convicted of killing a man whose burned body was found after he reported that the woman was threatening to kidnap her children from foster care.

The Joplin Globe reports that 37-year-old Crystal Galloway, of Scammon, was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in the May 2015 death of 59-year-old Robin Fought, of Dennis.

During the trial, prosecutors played a voicemail message that Fought left for a caseworker talking about Galloway planning to flee the state with her children. Five of Galloway’s six children had been taken into state custody in 2014, and she was only allowed supervised visits.

She and co-defendant Dakota Cunningham were arrested two days after the killing in Oklahoma. The 19-year-old Cunningham has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial.
