Warm today with thunderstorms moving in over the weekend

Weather 9-23After a warm Friday, a round of thunderstorms will move in Saturday evening. These storms could bring some gusty winds, and heavy rain which could cause some isolated flooding. Storms should move out of the area by Sunday afternoon. Here’s the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service.

Today: Sunny, with a high near 87. Light south southeast wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 68. South southeast wind 6 to 8 mph.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. Increasing clouds, with a high near 85. South wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 8 p.m. Low around 65. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 a.m. High near 72. North northwest wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers before 8 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 50. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 69.

Tulsa police officer charged in man’s death released on bond

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The Tulsa, Oklahoma police officer charged with killing an unarmed black motorist has turned herself in to authorities. Officer Betty Shelby was then released on $50,000 bond.

Shelby has been charged with first-degree manslaughter for shooting and killing 40-year-old Terence Crutcher. Prosecutors say Shelby “reacted unreasonably” when she shot Crutcher, who wasn’t listening to police commands and was walking away from her with his hands held up.

Semi crash blocks traffic at south junction

accident, crashSt. Joseph police are warning you to avoid the south junction of I-29 and I-229 because of an injury accident.

A semi jackknifed into a car at the 42.4 mile marker of southbound I-29 shortly after 4:30 am.

Police say traffic will be impacted “for an undetermined amount of time” according to a Nixle alert.

Witnesses say one lane of traffic is getting through, but officers on the scene worry that morning rush-hour traffic will be slowed down by the crash.

At least one person was transported to the hospital.

Law officers in 6 states join in speed enforcement campaign this weekend

Missouri joins five other states in a regional speed-enforcement campaign starting Friday. They’re hoping to catch speeding drivers in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

The campaign will run Friday through Sunday.

Officers will be concentrating on high traffic roadways in the effort to reduce speeding-related auto crashes.

Authorities say 27 percent of crash fatalities nationwide in 2015 were related to speeding of driving too fast for conditions and that 86 percent of all speeding-related traffic fatalities were on roads where the posted speed limits were 55 miles per hour or lower.

Woman, 87, injured in Harrison County crash

A crash in Harrison County early Friday morning sent an 87-year-old Wisconsin woman to the hospital.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a semi crashed into the rear of a car along I-35 near Bethany at about 12:15 a.m. Two people in the car were hurt.

According to the crash report, the passenger, Mary Ann Johnson, 87, of Heartland, Wisconsin suffered moderate injuries, and was transported to the Harrison County Community Hospital.

The driver of the car, 56-year-old Paula Knuth of Grafton, Wisconsin, complained of neck and back pain, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

Man killed in crash of truck fleeing from police

KHP-Patch2.jpgOne of four occupants of a pickup truck fleeing from police in northeastern Kansas early Thursday was killed when the vehicle crashed and rolled. The Kansas Highway Patrol says it was not immediately clear who was driving.

The crash happened on K-68 highway in Franklin County shortly after 1am Thursday.

According to the crash report, 29-year-old Mario Calderon-Orozco of Roeland Park, Kansas was killed. One occupant, Rigoberto Valdovinos-Orozco suffered what were described as disabling injuries.

The other two occupants were not hurt, including one who presented an ID from Mexico to officers.

Suspect, 15, arrested after stolen vehicle crash

St. Joseph Police say a 15-year-old suspect is in custody in connection with the crash of a stolen vehicle early Wednesday morning.

Capt. Jeff Wilson says a juvenile was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

On Wednesday, officials said the suspect spotted a police officer and sped off, later crashing the stolen vehicle in the 3100 block of Woodbine Road, and fleeing on foot.

The case has been turned over to the Buchanan County Juvenile Office.

Shooting suspect pleads guilty

A St. Joseph man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a fatal shooting in his garage.

Lonald Ueligger Sr. pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter, admitting he shot Perry Smith in the head on June 24. The shooting happened at Ueligger’s home in the 2900 block of Dover.

Judge Daniel Kellogg scheduled sentencing November 1 at 2pm. The charge carries a five-to-fifteen year prison term upon conviction.

An unusual photographic exhibition is coming to Missouri Western beginning Friday.

The exhibit features work from national and international artists working with the cyanotype photographic process.

“Shades of Blue: Contemporary Cyanotypes” will be exhibited at Missouri Western State University’s Potter Art Gallery from Sept. 23 to Oct. 24.

There will be an opening reception at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 that is free and open to the public.

“Shades of Blue” features national and international artists who work with the cyanotype photographic process. Featured artists include Isobel Davis, Nina Earley, Adam Finkelston, Hannah Skoonberg, Andy Julo, Tasha Lewis, Rochelle Martin, Anna Mavromatis, Heather Oelklas, Danielle Owensby, Veronica Siehl, Emmeline Solomon, Nicole White and Vanessa Wiggins.

The Potter Art Gallery is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

(Update) Trial setting scheduled for Safari Drive murder suspect

A St. Joseph man appeared in court Thursday for arraignment on one count of second degree murder in connection with the fatal shootings of Kevilee Villegas and Raymond Gonzalez on Safari Drive in July. Through an interpreter and his attorney, Omar Martinez-Velez entered a plea of not guilty. Judge Daniel Kellogg scheduled the case for trial setting November 17.

The defendant is one of five people charged with the killings. All five are being held without bail.

He is the third of the five suspects to be bound over to Circuit Court after waiving their preliminary hearings. Luz Figueroa-Castillo is scheduled for a trial setting September 26, while Luis Omar Robles-Vargas is scheduled for circuit court arraignment September 29.

Preliminary hearings scheduled for Alexi Martinez-Andino and Raymond Jimenez Bencebi Jr. have been continued.

According to court documents all five of the defendants were in the area of Lion Rd. and Safari Dr. on the morning of July 17. Multiple rounds were fired from several weapons striking and causing the death of the two victims. Each defendant is accused of firing numerous rounds at the victims striking both of them.
