Barbara Kendall
1935-2016

3862741Barbara Kendall died peacefully August 18, 2016 at a Wathena, Kansas healthcare facility following a brief illness.
She was born to Joe and Zola (Moser) Scott August 29, 1935 in Troy, Kansas.
A farm girl all her childhood, it wasn’t until her family moved to Elwood, Kansas in the mid-1950’s that she would meet her future husband.
Odis Kendall was introduced to Barbara by his cousin, Jean Liechti. Barbara and Jean were friends and 1955 graduates of Elwood High School. After a year of courtship Odie and Barb were married May 4, 1956 at the First Baptist Church of Elwood.
Aside from a brief six years, Barbara lived her whole life in various parts of Doniphan County, Kansas. 30 years were spent in Elwood. During that time she was the local Avon Lady and faithfully served her customers for two decades.
Barbara enjoyed many arts and crafts but was most enthusiastic with her quilting. She participated for many years in a quilting circle at Evolution United Methodist Church.
She cherished the times spent with her beloved grandchildren, great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. During the holidays her home was always open to family and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Odis; two brothers Jerry and Alva.
She is survived by 3 sons: Thomas (Joan), St. Joseph, Missouri; Silas (Cynthia), Platte City, Missouri; Edward (Lisa), St. Joseph; 1 daughter: Sharon, Lecompton, Kansas.; 5 grandchildren: Sara (Joshua); Rachel; Selina; Derek; Bailey and 1 great-granddaughter: Eloise. 2 sisters: Katherine Givens, St. Joseph; Beverly Richardson, Elwood; 1 brother: Paul (Linda), Wathena

Ralph “Bub” Lance, Jr.
1928-2016

Lance, Ralph. obitphotoRalph “Bub” Lance, Jr., Fillmore, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Missouri.
He was born March 28, 1928 in Andrew County, Missouri and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Ralph was a former member of the Fox Hunters Association at Fillmore, Missouri and a past member of the Fillmore School Board. He enjoyed hunting, swap meets, playing pitch and square dancing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Sr. and Mabel (Atkins) Lance; and three sisters, Bonnie Sisk, Avis Shunk and Roberta “Bertie” Elifrits.
Survivors include four daughters, Debbie Kammerer, Derri Wandfluh, both of St. Joseph, Missouri, Donna Streeby and Dana Lance, both of Fillmore, Missouri; three sons, Randy Lance, Ted Lance and his wife Sylvia, and Bob Lance and his wife Bonnie, all of Fillmore, Missouri; twenty grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence J. “Larry” Creevan
1950-2016

Lawrence J. “Larry” Creevan, 65, of Wamego, died Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Crestview Nursing Home in Seneca.
He was born September 14, 1950 at Fairbury, Nebraska, the son of Lawrence W. and Jo Ann Nider Creevan. He graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Providence during the Vietnam War.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, a son, Lawrence Joseph Lavern Creevan, and a brother, James Patrick Creevan.
Survivors include his mother, Jo Ann Creevan, Onaga; three sons, Anthony Moore, Pawnee City, NE, Brian Creevan and Matthew Creevan; two sisters, Barbara Perez and husband Richard, Onaga and Jacqueline “Jaci” Morris and husband Robert, Circleville; and eight grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Graveside services with military honors will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 25th at St. Columkille Catholic Cemetery at Blaine. Herbert Wallingford
1931-2016

unnamed (81)Herbert Wallingford, 85, Detroit, Michigan, formerly of Atchison County Kansas died Friday, August 19, 2016.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 826 Riley Street with visitation and viewing at 10:00 A.M. and service to begin at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Pardee Cemetery. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
Herbert was born July 20, 1931 to Herbert and America Sloan Wallingford in Atchison. He grew up on farms near Effingham, Kansas and attended Clinghan and Pardee Schools, and graduated from Atchison County Community High School.
He married, worked various jobs in the area and joined the Army in 1954. He returned from service, eventually moved to Detroit, MI, and worked for Chrysler Corporation until retirement in 1993.
He leaves to cherish his memory son, Dale, step-children Darold and Karen Whitehead; brothers, Maurice (Pat), Warren (Martha), Larry (Rhonda), and sisters, Kitty (Malcolm) and Dorothy, plus a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.

Margaret E Osborn
1920-2016

Margaret E. Osborn 95, of DeKalb, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at a St. Joseph Health Care Center. She was born September 28, 1920 in Faucett, MO, daughter of the late Irene (Stanton) and John Warren. She graduated from Central High School and Northwest Missouri State University with a BS in Education. She retired from DeKalb High School as a School Teacher after 30 years of service. She was a member of the DeKalb Christian Church. Margaret was preceded in death by husband, Kenneth H Osborn, and her parents. Survivors include, son, Harlan (Donna) Osborn of Faucett, MO, granddaughter, Lisa (Robert) Holthus of The Woodlands, TX, grandson, Kenneth (Kim) Osborn of Lincoln, NE, and a great grandson, Tyrus Holthus.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Rev. Barbara “Joyce” Harshman
1936-2016

She was born August 1, 1936 in Pittsfield, Illinois.
Joyce graduated from Pittsfield Community High School Class of 1954. She married Harold M. Harshman on November 13, 1955.
She was a homemaker and family was most important to her. Joyce was of the Methodist faith and she loved to decorate for the holidays bringing lasting memories to her children. She enjoyed crafting, creating flower arrangements, antiquing and collecting dolls with her daughter Kim.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mary (Poppele) Faris; brother, Gary Faris; niece, Terri Lynn Long; and nephew, Craig Howell.
Survivors include husband Harold of 60 years and the love of her life; children, Cindy Cooley (Philip), Caledonia, Michigan, Mark Harshman (Kassie) and Kim Thiel (Steve), both of St. Joseph, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Jenna Gray-Shomler (John), Nick Gray, Aaron Gray (Harmony), step-granddaughter, Christina West (Ben), Matthew Harshman (Libby), Brynn Hudson (Jeff), Holly Pitts (James) and Brent Thiel; ten great-grandchildren, Eilam Gray-Shomler, Logan Gray, Lane and Daisy Harshman, Maryn, Hayes and Faith Hudson, Harper, Poppy and Hadley Pitts, and two more on the way; sister, Arlene Howell Turner, Springfield, Missouri; one nephew, Tim Howell (Cheryl); and two nieces, Susan Bueno and Sandy Shaffer (Steve).

John K. Ballance, 40, Atchison, Kansas died unexpectedly Saturday, August 20, 2016.

Eileen (Butler) Neff
1940-2016

Neff, Eileen obit photoEileen (Butler) Neff was born November 3rd, 1940 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England. She followed her four sisters and immigrated to the United States in 1964. On August 18, 1967 she married Joseph Neff, and in 1976 she became a naturalized US citizen. This year, Eileen and Joe made it to their 49th wedding anniversary.
Before she married Joe, she worked at several companies in various capacities. One of her first jobs in St. Joseph was in the typing pool at the American Angus Association. In later years, she worked at the Municipal Court of St. Joseph, The Cathedral of St. Joseph, The Bone and Joint Clinic, and the former American National Bank. She was an active member of the Catholic Church for many years, and in later years, she became a caregiver for two elderly ladies in the local community.
Eileen was a wonderful cook, specializing in roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, and she loved making her fabulous homemade brownies, pecan tarts, and carrot cookies. Her green thumb with flowers and transplanting small trees and shrubs was another one of her talents, and she loved all types of animals, especially the family pets. As many neighborhood dog owners and walkers know, she always left a bowl of fresh water on the sidewalk of her home for those passing by with a thirsty pet. Eileen was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, neighbors, friends and those in need.
She was preceded in death by her father, George Butler; mother, Winifred Ann (O’Brien) Butler; and sisters, Margaret (Butler) Varenhorst and Winifred (Butler) Addyman.
Surviving are her husband, Joe; son, Michael and son-in-law Michael Bach, Toronto, Canada; sisters, Patricia (Butler) Hodgson, Le Mars, Iowa and Sheila (Butler) Thompson, St. Joseph, Missouri; brothers, Colin Butler (Valerie) and Farrell Butler (Molly), Yorkshire, England; and numerous nieces and nephews.

(UPDATE) Victim arrested after shooting; police investigate possible mistaken identity

wpid-wpid-sjpd-patch1.jpgSt Joseph police now say the victim in a shooting Sunday night has been taken into custody. Captain Jeff Wilson says the 25-year-old Amazonia man was treated for gunshot wounds to the legs and then arrested in reference to a stolen vehicle case. No charges have been filed in either case.

Meanwhile police are hoping you can help them locate the assailants in the shooting incident Sunday night, which is being investigated as a possible case of mistaken identity.

According to the victim, a gray Pontiac Grand Am pulled up to him near 12th and Messanie shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday.

Sergeant Roy Hoskins say the victim told police there were two white males and one white female in the car. All three were wearing hoodies. The victim told investigators the assailants asked if he was someone else. When the victim said “no,” he was shot in the legs.

The victim’s name was not released. He was taken by private vehicle to Mosaic Life Care for treatment of gunshot wounds to legs. Hoskins says the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Wrong-way driver killed in highway crash

KHP logoThe Kansas Highway Patrol says a motorist was killed after driving the wrong way on an interstate highway and crashing into a semi head-on.

According to the crash report, 33-year-old Christopher Frank of McFarland, Kansas, was driving east in the westbound lanes of I-70 in Wabaunsee County near the town of Paxico at about 2:16 a.m. Sunday. The patrol says construction had reduced traffic to just one lane along the interstate.

Frank’s pickup was hit head on by a semi in oncoming traffic. The driver, Delphia Baynes of Statesville, North Carolina, was treated for possible injuries at Topeka’s Stormont Vail Healthcare. A passenger in the sleeper compartment was not injured.

Kidder man injured in crash Sunday morning

Train With MSHPA single-vehicle crash in Dekalb County early Sunday morning injured a 29-year-old man from Kidder, Missouri.

Traffic investigators say Patrick Cox lost control of his Ford Explorer along SE Grindstone Road near Route C, about eight miles northwest of Cameron, at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report says the vehicle left the roadway and overturned into the ditch.

Cox was transported to Mosaic Life Care for treatment of moderate injuries.

Crash Saturday night near Cameron injures two

MSHP purpleA rollover crash near Cameron Saturday night sent two people to the hospital.

The crash Missouri State Highway Patrol says 35-year-old Crystal Hart lost control of her SUV along Route-EE at U.S. Highway 69 at 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle hit an embankment and overturned, then rolled down the embankment and into a fence.

Hart and her passenger, 15-year-old Taylor Barker, each suffered moderate injuries. They were transported by ambulance to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

Three hurt in crash west of Cameron

MSHP patchThree people including two children were injured in a single-vehicle crash along U.S. 36 highway west of Cameron Saturday morning.

According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Davelle Gilbert lost control of her SUV at about 8:35 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle went into the median where it overturned onto the driver’s side. The 48-year-old Cameron woman suffered what were described as moderate injuries.

Two kids were also in the car. 11-year-old Sidney and nine-year-old Sophia Gilbert suffered minor injuries.

All three were transported to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

Motorcyclist seriously injured in head-on crash

A motorcyclist from Blockton, Iowa suffered serious injuries in a crash in Nodaway County Saturday night.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 49-year-old Troy Farrens was driving along Route-C west of Elmo when his Harley Davidson crossed the center line and hit a Chevy Malibu head-on.

According to the crash report, Mr Farrens was transported to Creighton University hospital by helicopter ambulance. The other driver was not injured. The crash report identifies her as 21-year-old Breann Hunt of Burlington Junction.

Water main break near Central High School

Missouri American WaterA water main break early Monday morning could cause some problems as students head to school at Central High School.

At about 4:30 a.m. crews from Missouri American Water, along with police and Streets Department crews, were sent to the 2700 block of Edmond.

The water main break prompted a Nixle alert to avoid the area along Edmond between 27th and 28th Street (Noyes Boulevard).

By 7:15 a.m. utility crews were shutting down the water main in hopes of repairing it with minimal disruption to school activities.

  • Routes J, P, T and MM – Pothole patching, Aug. 22 – 26
  • U.S. Route 71 – Northbound single-lane closure at the White Cloud Creek Bridge, just north of the Andrew County line, for a bridge deck replacement project, Aug. 22 – 28. This includes a 12-foot width restriction.

Mercer County

  • Route P – CLOSED from U.S. Route 136 to Elvis Place Road for a culvert replacement, Aug. 22 – 26, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily

Putnam County

  • Routes N, O, Y, AA and YY – Pothole patching, Aug. 22 – 26

Worth County

  • U.S. Route 169 – At the Middle Fork Grand River Bridge for maintenance, Aug. 22 – 25. A temporary traffic signal has been installed during the project.
  • Route 46 – From U.S. Route 169 to the Harrison County line for pothole patching, Aug. 22 – 26
