Northwest Missouri State pitches partnership, hotel tax, for events center

City of Maryville logoCity officials in Maryville on Monday heard a proposal to help Northwest Missouri State University fund a facility that could draw large events to the city. The proposed $20 million Northwest Multipurpose Center would also provide space on campus for off-season athletic training.

Voters in Maryville could be asked in November to approve a 5% guest tax at local hotels and motels. TheMaryville City Council will vote on placing the tax on the ballot August 22.

City officials estimate the tax would generate about $215,000 per year. Tax funds would pay off about 17% of the $20 million facility and would also fund tourism and marketing efforts in the city. The university hopes to get private donations and other sources to pay for the remaining $16.5 million.

Northwest Missouri State President Dr. John Jasinski told the council the Northwest Multipurpose Center represents the largest public/private partnership in the 111-year history of the university.

Monday, Aug. 15, at approximately 6 a.m., crews will again close two lanes of the Belt Highway and move traffic head-to-head through Thursday, Aug. 18, at approximately 7 p.m. At that time, access to Mitchell Avenue will also be restored.

During the closures, all business entrances on Mitchell Avenue will be accessible. The signals for all traffic at the intersection will also be turned off during the work. As part of the project, the contractor is installing flashing yellow arrow signals at the intersection.

Suit filed against retail stores for selling CBD oil

Missouri attorney general seal(News Release) Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster announced today that his office has filed suit against four retail shops: River City Nutrition in Kirkwood, Planet Health Market in Ellisville, Vapur West in Kansas City, and Main Smoke & Gift Shop in Kansas City, for violating the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act by advertising, offering for sale, and selling hemp extract, including cannabidiol oil (commonly known as “CBD oil”), without a license, in violation of Missouri law. The Attorney General seeks to enjoin their sale of CBD oil.

In 2014, the Missouri Legislature approved the possession and use of CBD oil for Missourians with intractable epilepsy. Purchasers must obtain a signed statement from a neurologist confirming intractable epilepsy that may benefit from treatment with hemp extract, as well as a registration card from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The Missouri Department of Agriculture administers the issuance of licenses to nonprofit entities to legally grow and process hemp extract, including CBD oil, and distribute the product at licensed care centers to those consumers with valid registration cards.

Beginning in January 2016, the Attorney General’s office sent approximately two dozen letters to shops throughout the state where unlicensed sales had been reported, notifying them of the current legal status of CBD oil under Missouri law. Most of the shops voluntarily stopped selling the product. Upon subsequent investigation, however, four stores were found to still be selling the product in violation of state law.

“The legislature created a process to allow epilepsy patients to purchase CBD oil from licensed nonprofit entities,” Koster said. “My office will ensure consumers have access to this treatment without being misled into buying illegal or fraudulent substances.”
