Woman pleads guilty to bank robbery and getaway with child in the car

USDOJ coinA Kansas City woman pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges that she took part in an armed robbery at a Stillwell bank before the robbers led police on a high speed chase with a child in the car.

Danille Morris, 26, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm during a robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm following a felony conviction.

She admitted she cased the bank, provided the getaway car and was in the car when the robbers fled the bank.

Acting U.S. Attorney for the Kansas District Tom Beall says two co-defendants already have entered pleas. Gary Jordan, 39, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm during a robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm following a felony conviction. Co-defendant Jacob L. Smith, 18, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during a robbery.

In their pleas, Jordan and Smith admitted they were armed with handguns when they entered the First National Bank at 7460 W. 199th Street in Stilwell, Kan. They held tellers at gunpoint before fleeing with cash stuffed in a backpack. Jordan took the wheel of the getaway car.

During the next 25 minutes, the robbers were pursued by the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Leawood Police Department and other law enforcement agencies as they fled across the Kansas/Missouri state line. During the chase, Smith fired at officers six times from the car. After the car overturned on a sharp turn, the defendants were arrested. Throughout the chase, co-defendant Morris and her 19-month-old child were in the car. She was seated in the front passenger seat at the time the vehicle crashed. The child was fastened in a car seat in the back seat.

Morris is set for sentencing Dec. 20. The crimes carry the following penalties: Up to 25 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 for robbery, not less than 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 for discharging firearms in a robbery, and up to 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 for unlawful possession a firearm by a felon.

An Amish minister will serve 25 years in prison in connection with his wife’s death nine years ago in northwest Missouri.

39-year-old Samuel Borntreger of Kentucky pleaded guilty to a felony for second-degree murder in Harrison County in June for the death of his wife 26-year-old Anna Borntreger.  Borntreger received his sentence to serve 25 years in the Department of Correction Monday.

As we previously reported, court records allege Borntreger went to Kentucky authorities in January and told them he put antifreeze in his wife’s drinks and battery acid in her rectum before her death in late 2006. No foul play was suspected when she died.  At that point in time the couple lived in an Amish community in Harrison County.

Police investigate second stolen vehicle crash involving teens

SJPD, ST JOSEPH POLICE,, POLICEPolice are looking into a second stolen vehicle that crashed in St. Joseph Monday morning.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said officers responded to 13th and Duncan around 10:30 a.m. after concerned citizens reported following a truck they knew to be stolen.

The vehicle ended up crashing and two individuals believed to be juveniles ran from the scene. Police allegedly caught one of the teens and are currently investigating a second person of interest believed to also be a juvenile.

The crash comes just hours after officers responded to the area of 22nd St. and Pear where police said two teens were also involved in a car crash with a stolen vehicle. One of the teens in that crash was taken to the hospital with injuries. Wilson said that teen sustained two broken legs. A second teen was at large after the initial crash.

As we previously reported, Wilson said the course of the investigation will have to determine if the two crashes are connected but that there is a possibility that the subject arrested at the second crash may have been involved in the earlier incident.

(UPDATE) Police say cement truck driver may have fallen asleep

St. Joseph police say a cement-truck driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel Monday morning, sending the vehicle careening off 36-highway, down an embankment and into some trees near the S.W. Parkway.

Captain Jeff Wilson says the driver was ejected and was seriously hurt. The victim was transported to Mosaic Life Care for treatment. Capt. Wilson says it appears that inattention led to the crash, and that the driver may have fallen asleep. Wilson did not release the man’s name.

Witnesses at the scene said the man was moving quite a bit when he was loaded into an ambulance.

The vehicle was empty, which witnesses said was a good thing. A full load of cement would have greatly complicated the accident, and the cleanup.

Multiple wreckers were deployed for the painstakingly slow process of pulling the vehicle along its original path and up the embankment without tipping it over. That required officials to close one westbound lane of U.S. Highway 36 near the 28th Street exit. The crash happened near a bridge over S.W. Parkway. The Parkway was closed near Duncan Street.

The accident happened shortly shortly after 11:15 am, according to a Trail Patrol volunteer in the area who heard the crash from about a block away. By 2:45pm the cleanup was still underway and the roads were still closed.

OSHA investigating forklift injury

osha logoThe Occupational Safety & Health Administration is investigating after a man was injured by a forklift in St. Joseph.

According to OSHA on July 29th around 6 p.m. a 69-year-old man was reported to have sustained injuries including a broken hip after being struck by a forklift at I & M Machine & Fabrication located at 401 S. 3rd St.

OSHA Spokeswoman, Rhonda Burke said OSHA opened up an investigation into the incident Aug. 4th.

She said the injured employee was reported to be a janitor working for a temp service but has been working at I & M since July of 2005.

According to the report, the man was picking up trash and had exited his cart when he was then hit by the forklift operator who did not see him.  OSHA said it has six months to complete the investigation.

“If there was a violation the company could be issued a citation and a proposed penalty,” Burke said.

REBECCA SUE ROBERTS

A St. Joseph woman is facing two misdemeanor charges after a three vehicle crash on King Hill Ave.

Rebecca Roberts, 48 is charged in Buchanan County with misdemeanors for driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to court documents on Thursday shortly before 3 p.m. Roberts allegedly drove into the rear of moving traffic in the 4100 block of King Hill Ave. pushing one vehicle forward into another.  The driver of the first vehicle was transported with an injury.

“Roberts had her four year old grandson in the front passenger seat of her car with no child safety or booster seat and no seat belt on the child during the crash,” said Officer Brian McClintick with the St. Joseph Police Department. “The child was thrown forward during the crash into the airbag that deployed on impact saving the child from being thrown out of the front windshield.”

McClintick said Roberts was operating the vehicle while impaired on prescription drugs.

“Roberts was unable to stand/walk without falling over,” McClintick said. “Roberts showed impairment on sobriety testing with poor balance, unable to follow instructions.”

Bail was set at $5,000 cash only, an arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.
