Breastfeeding moms to take part in latch event at mall

East Hills MallBreastfeeding moms are taking part in a latch-in in St. Joseph as part of World Breastfeeding Week.

St. Joe Latch MO is being held at 10 a.m. today, (Saturday) in the East Hills Shopping Center in the Sunporch Cafe.

The event is part of a grand finale of week-long events the City of St. Joseph Health Department WIC program has hosted as part of World Breastfeeding Week.

Following the “St. Joe Latch MO,” the health department said it plans to present East Hills Shopping Center a Gold Level Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite Award for the addition of a breastfeeding lounge which will be available to employees and shoppers.

“We are proud to be able to support nursing mothers in our community, and what better timing to open the lounge than during World Breastfeeding Week,” said Regan Lyons, Marketing Manager at East Hills Shopping Center. “The new breastfeeding lounge will offer convenience and privacy to mothers while they are shopping.”

East Hills Shopping Center was recently named a Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite at the Gold level by the Department of Health and Senior Services. To become a Gold Level Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite, East Hills created an employee breastfeeding policy, provides a nursing room for employees and a breast pump for employees, among other qualifications.

Atchison County Park Lake remains under blue-green algae warning

bg algaeKansas health officials continue to warn the public not to make contact with the water in a public lake near Atchison, Kansas. Public waters currently under Warning status are the Atchison County Park Lake in Atchison County, Lake Afton in Sedgwick County, Overbrook City Lake in Osage County, and Milford Reservoir in Clay, Dickinson and Geary counties.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment samples publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms. Based on sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

In a news release, the KDHE says lakes under a Warning are not closed. Marinas, lakeside businesses and park camping facilities are open for business. Drinking water and showers at parks are safe and not affected by algae blooms. Boating and fishing are safe on lakes under a Warning, but contact with the water should be avoided.

It is safe to eat fish caught during a harmful blue-green algae outbreak, as long as the fish is rinsed with clean water; only the fillet portion is consumed and all other parts are discarded.

Hands should also be washed with clean water after handling fish taken from an affected lake. Zoned lakes may have portions fully open for all recreation even if other portions are under a Warning.

You should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

When a Warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:
· Lake water is not good to drink for pets or livestock
· Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans
· Water contact should be avoided
· Fish can be eaten as long as they are rinsed with clean water, consume only the fillet portion, and discard all other parts
· Do not allow pets to eat dried algae
· If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible
· Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation

High-speed chase leads to multiple convictions

Leavenworth Police badgeSentencing is scheduled next month for a 29-year-old Overland Park man on charges stemming from a high-speed police pursuit in Tonganoxie last month.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson says Michael George pleaded no contest to all the charges against him.

Thompson says that during the early-morning hours of July 20, Tonganoxie police were notified by a KBI officer who believed a driver to be impaired. Police made a traffic stop and asked for identification, but they say George took off, and led police in a high-speed chase through the city of Tonganoxie. Thompson says the vehicle eventually stopped, but the suspect fled on foot.

He was apprehended during a search by officers and the department’s canine unit. The vehicle was found to be stolen.

George pleaded guilty in Leavenworth County District Court to charges of attempting to elude law enforcement, interference with law enforcement, possession of a stolen vehicle, and driving while found to be a habitual violator. Sentencing is scheduled September 16 at 10 a.m.

Tarkio school superintendent arrested for DWI

Patrick N Martin
Patrick N Martin
An embattled educator in Northwest Missouri is in trouble with the law again.

Tarkio Police Chief Tyson Gibbons says in a news release that Tarkio School Superintendent Dr. Patrick Martin was pulled over in a traffic stop August 4 shortly after 3pm. Gibbons says Martin was driving on the wrong side of the roadway in the 1100 block and 1200 block of Pine Street in Tarkio.

Gibbons says they were on the lookout after receiving information about a careless driver in Fairfax, Missouri, which is about eight miles south of Tarkio. The vehicle license plate information given by the reporting party matched that of Martin’s vehicle.

Chief Gibbons says Martin was booked into jail on three counts, DWI, driving with an open container, and failing to drive on the right half of the roadway.

He’s scheduled to make an traffic appearance in Tarkio Municipal Court August 29th.

Martin is the former principal at Platte County High School who resigned after he was charged with soliciting a prostitute back in 2012. Prosecutors later dropped the charges but Martin resigned from his job in Platte County.

East Hills modifies plans for breastfeeding lounge

After public input on the design for a breastfeeding lounge set to debut Saturday at the East Hills Shopping Center, plans have been changed.

East Hills Shopping Center released a mock-up photo to the St. Joseph Post Thursday afternoon depicting an example of what the lounge may look like. The photo included both a child and regular size toilet in the room which could be locked for privacy.

As previously reported, East Hills Marketing Manager Regan Lyons said they’ve been working with La’Sherrie Tyes at the Department of Health to become a Gold Level Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite. Lyons said the lounge, located near the restrooms by the food court, includes a comfortable bench, an end table, plugs for breast pumps, a diaper changing station and a sink and a toilet.

However, after input from the public, East Hills has decided to change its original plans.

In a statement, East Hills said after several complaints it has decided to remove both the adult and children’s size toilets from the new breastfeeding lounge.

“This space will solely be used for the purpose of breastfeeding and not a restroom facility. The photo shown was a preview of the space, which has yet to be finalized. The room will also feature an activity table for children, a diaper changing station and breastfeeding pamphlets. As stated in the article, the final project will be unveiled on Saturday. East Hills Shopping Center would like to specify that we support all breastfeeding mothers.  Due to requests from our customers and employees, we decided to offer a private space for mothers who might be more comfortable in a lockable space away from the public instead of in their cars or in a restroom stall. It is still a mother’s right to breastfeed in public anytime, anywhere. That is why we have hosted the Big Latch in our shopping center for several years. We are hoping this new space is a step in the right direction of normalizing breastfeeding and supporting our local breastfeeding mothers.”

Buchanan County earns Certified Work Ready Community designation

Gov. Jay Nixon
Gov. Jay Nixon

Governor Jay Nixon visited St Joseph on Thursday to congratulate local leaders in Buchanan County for being designated a Certified Work Ready Community. Buchanan County is the 35th county in the state to receive the designation.

The initiative is an effort to align workforce training with the economic development needs of communities. It also matches applicants to jobs based on skill level.

“You’ve got employers working regularly with education to tell them what they need,” Nixon says, “and you have the Work Keys program, which is a verifiable test that students are now taking that shows what their skill sets are.”

“This is especially important, not only in getting PhD’s, it’s important in some of the technical jobs that you can varifiably prove core competency in areas for technical jobs that exist out there that pay more.”

Nixon told a gathering of government, business, education and community leaders that Missouri leads the nation in job-creation per-capita. There were 16% more new businesses created in the state in 2013 than the year before, according to the latest data available.

In a news release, the governor said that by taking part in the Certified Work Ready Communities initiative, Buchanan County is:
* Helping workers understand what skills are required by employers, and how to prepare themselves for success.
* Helping businesses effectively communicate their workforce needs to area education and training programs.
* Providing educators with the tools needed to close the skills gap by establishing career pathways for students with recognized credentials.
* Equipping economic development organizations with an on-demand reporting tool to promote the quality of the workforce.

The event was held at Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica. The company’s vice president of operations, Dr. Bernd Eichenmueller such qualified employees with the skill sets in scientific and technical fields are paramount to the success of manufacturing and supplying the company’s line of animal vaccines.

About 80 people attended the event, including officials from the City of St Joseph and Buchanan County, as well as the St. Joseph School District, Missouri Western State University, the Chamber of Commerce, and several local businesses.
