Shooting scare appears to be unfounded

wpid-wpid-sjpd-patch1.jpgOfficials notified several businesses to lock their doors Tuesday afternoon after what appears to have been an unfounded report of an active shooter.

We have no reports of any shots fired, and police officials tell us they believe the report to be unfounded. Officers responded to the Family Guidance Center 724 N. 22nd Street this afternoon.

Gary Hammond of the Center says an employee received a call from her husband saying there might be a shooter on a roof near his house.  The report led officers to the Family Guidance Center.  Hammond says as far as he knows it was a false report.

Captain Jeff Wilson confirms it was a false report.  “Absolutely unfounded,” Wilson said.

Hammond wants to compliment the police.  “They were very thorough, extremely professional, and should be commended for their work,” he said.

Woman Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy In Interstate Sex Trafficking Case

USDOJ color
A Kansas woman pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to operate an interstate sex trafficking business.

Acting U.S. Attorney for Kansas Tom Beall says Shannon Nelson, 23, Topeka, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy. In her plea, she admitted conspiring with co-defendants to operate a Topeka-based prostitution business.

At times, as many as 20 females were working as prostitutes for the organization. The leader of the organization rented houses where some of the prostitutes were allowed to live. The organization used Web sites, social media and cell phones to advertise sexual services and to keep track of prostitutes.

Nelson admitted she worked for co-defendant Frank Boswell as a commercial sex worker. She became a trusted member of Boswell’s organization and lived in one of Boswell’s houses. She posted advertisements for herself and other women on a Web site offering sexual services. She used cell phones to communicate with Boswell and others in the course of operating the prostitution business.

Federal agents encountered her July 15, 2015, at a Motel 6 in Omaha where she and other women had gone to engage in prostitution.

Sentencing is set for Oct. 24. She faces a penalty of up to five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on each count.

Co-defendant Frank Boswell, 42, Topeka, Kan., is awaiting trial. Co-defendant Rachel Flenniken, 34, Topeka, Kan., is set for sentencing Oct. 17. Co-defendant Sean P. Hall, 46, Topeka, Kan., is set for sentencing Oct. 3.

Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph will host a ribbon cutting/open house ceremony on Friday, July 22, at 11am, to celebrate completion of the replacement of a runway serving both general aviation and the 139th Airlift Wing.

The Air National Guard Wing requires a minimum of 458 passes annually to remain short field qualified. The assault strip supports over 2,500 short landings/touch and go’s per year, which includes visitors who utilize the Advanced Airlift Tactical Training Center.

The runway replacement also gives Rosecrans Memorial Airport a standard day/nighttime instrument capable runway. This new construction will allow all users to utilize the facility in a more efficient manner.

The Assault Strip-Runway 13/31 construction was financed through a Military Cooperative Construction Agreement (MCCA) and the city of St. Joseph. The cost of the structure was $5,847,939, and was completed in approximately four months.
