Missouri governor says he doesn’t want to be UM president

mu University of Missouri MU
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says he doesn’t want to be president of the University of Missouri System.

Nixon told reporters Tuesday that he’s not seeking the position and won’t accept it if it’s offered to him.

The University of Missouri governing board is searching for a new president. The former president resigned in November amid student protests on the Columbia campus over what some saw as administrators’ indifference to racial issues.

Mike Middleton is leading the university system on an interim basis.

Nixon, a Democrat, is barred by term limits from seeking re-election. His final term ends in January.

2016 St. Joseph Community Survey. Photo by Nadia Thacker

The results of a community survey will be released today by the Community Alliance of St. Joseph.

The results will be shared at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, at the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, 3003 Frederick Ave.

The survey was administered by ETC Institute, an Olathe, Kan., company that has performed similar surveys in more than 500 cities throughout the United States.

“This is the fourth survey where the Alliance has partnered with ETC Institute,” said Steve Johnston, Executive Director of the Community Alliance. “The first survey was completed in June of 2010 with the others in 2012 and 2014.The results were used to help establish priorities for St. Joseph and Buchanan County. As an example, the City CIP Committee has used the results to help them determine priorities based on resident input.”

The survey results will continue to be a valuable benchmarking tool for St. Joseph. Many of the questions posed to St. Joseph residents are asked of other cities’ residents by the ETC Institute.

“The survey allows us not only to see how we compare with other communities, but most importantly, to see what our residents feel is most important,” Johnston said.

After the 2016 results are reviewed, the Community Alliance will spend the next few months looking at the data and jointly determining both short- and long-term goals to develop appropriate strategies.

Signal work planned for the Belt Highway on Wednesday

wpid-modot-logo-200x150.jpgST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Evening signal work will affect motorists traveling on U.S. Hwy 169 (Belt Highway) through St. Joseph on Wednesday.

Crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday, weather permitting, to replace the signal cabinet at the intersection of the Belt Highway and Gene Field Road. As part of this routine signal maintenance, left turn signals for east and westbound traffic on Gene Field Road will be upgraded to flashing yellow arrows.

During different portions of the project, the signals will be inoperable and stop signs will be in place. Drivers are reminded that whenever a signal is dark or in flash mode, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop. Crews hope to have the work completed by 7 a.m. Even after the signals are operational, workers will be present at the intersection performing maintenance work. Motorists should use extra caution and may encounter delays throughout the night.

Flashing yellow arrow traffic signals, while new to this intersection, are not new to St. Joseph. This type of signal has already been installed at intersections along a portion of Route 6 (Frederick Boulevard), so many St. Joseph drivers are accustomed to the yellow flashing arrow in place of a solid, green ball indicator to guide them through a left-turn. These new signals have been shown to increase safety, reduce crashes, and address congestion and delay. Due to visual restrictions, the signals for north and southbound Belt Highway traffic will not be changed to flashing yellow arrows.
