Sanders delegates outnumber Clinton delegates at Missouri Democratic Party convention

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton narrowly defeated Bernie Sanders in Missouri’s primary election in March, but more Sanders delegates turned out to the Missouri Democratic Party’s state convention over the weekend. There were 321 delegates for Clinton and 453 for Sanders.

There was bickering among the campaigns at the convention, but party chairman Roy Temple hopes Democrats will see the big picture.

“If there are people that show up to any event like this and they’re determined to cause conflict, they can probably succeed. I operate under the assumption that people are here to do the work and to express enthusiasm for their candidate and prepare for the fall election,” said Temple.

Some Sanders supporters say they don’t trust Clinton while some Clinton supporters say Sanders is not a true Democrat.

The fighting wasn’t like the drama that Nevada’s state Democratic Party convention experienced, where violence broke out. Chairs were reportedly thrown and verbal threats were made there by activists, including to that state party’s chairwoman.

Clinton will have 36 Missouri delegates and Sanders will have 35. Clinton has secured enough delegates to be the presumptive nominee.

The Democratic National Convention is in Philadelphia beginning July 25.

Temple is glad to see an increase in the number of young voters involved in this election cycle.

“These things are about math and if you get your people out, you win. I mean, they’re going to have a lot of say in what happens here,” said Temple.

Bill expanding Missouri municipal court reforms signed, critics call it ‘unnecessary’

Governor Jay Nixon (D) has signed a bill expanding the reform of Missouri’s municipal courts that began last year, but critics say it’s not needed and politically motivated.

The bill caps how much cities can collect from citizens for minor ordinance violations. First-time offenses are limited to $200 fines and citizens can no longer be jailed for nonpayment. It also lowers the cap on finds and costs for minor traffic violations.

Deputy Director Richard Sheets with the Missouri Municipal League says the bill is unnecessary.

“I believe it was filed for political reasons, to make certain individuals campaign soundbites,” Sheets told Missourinet.

Republican Senator Eric Schmitt (Glendale), who is running for treasurer, sponsored the bill. He noted it had bipartisan support, including being signed by Nixon, a Democrat.

“A testament to the issue and how deeply people felt about making sure we reformed a system that wasn’t working for the poor, it wasn’t working for citizens. It was treating people as ATMs,” said Schmitt.

Sheets said the bill will hurt cities, who he says use fines to get people to clean up properties.

“It really is going to be a problem with absentee slumlords and absentee owners that live out of the city, out of the state, that have properties they’re not maintaining, with such a low fine,” said Sheets.

The bill expands on legislation that last year limited municipal traffic fines and fees.

Four people were arrested during a sobriety checkpoint held over the weekend in DeKalb County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the checkpoint was held from 10 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.  In addition to the four arrests made for driving while intoxicated troopers also issued five tickets and eight warnings.

“Removing impaired drivers from Missouri roadways is one of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s top priorities,” said Capt. James McDonald, commanding officer for Troop H, St. Joseph. “If you choose to drink and drive, you will be arrested and you will go to jail. If your plans include alcohol, always have a sober designated driver.”

St. Joseph man charged after allegedly running from police

A man police said was wanted on warrants at the time of his arrest is facing a new charge after allegedly running from officers on foot.

Nicholas Dewayne Riley, 26 of St. Joseph was charged last week in Buchanan County with a felony for resisting arrest stemming from an incident that took place Thursday .

According to court documents, Officer Michelle Ritter with the St. Joseph Police Department said she made a traffic stop shortly before 4 p.m. in the area of 12th and Lincoln when Riley who was wanted on warrants for parole, traffic and child neglect got out of the vehicle and took off running.

“Nicholas ran into a fenced area and had to turn back toward me. Nicholas pushed me to the side as I tried to block him from running further,” Ritter said. “I tased Nicholas but there was a clothing disconnect making it ineffective.  Nicholas tripped twice as I attempted to restrain him.  He continued to push his way out of my grip, causing me to fall to the ground once.”

Ritter said she then ran about two blocks after him and saw him get into a another vehicle and drive north on 13th from Corby.

“Nicholas nearly struck a patrol vehicle traveling south on 13th by driving in the opposing lane,” she said. “Officers were able to close in on Nicholas in the area of 12th and Moss and detain him after a struggle.”

Court documents state that between 2008 and 2016 Riley failed to appear for court in Buchanan 10 times.  Ritter said Riley was driving with a suspended license when he fled from officers.

Riley is being held on $10,000 bond.  An arraignment is set for Tuesday.
