Refunds coming to racers of canceled KC Neon Dash Event

shoesJefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster announced a settlement Friday with Shoelace Events, LLC, and its organizer, Austin Cash McKnight, who failed to make refunds after canceling a race in August 2014.

Shoelace Events advertised a Neon Dash Event at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, which was to be held on August 23, 2014. The company took upfront money from more than 130 consumers and then subsequently canceled the event. Missouri consumers were promised refunds, but never received them. Consumers paid $24.95 for a single entry, and as much as $249.50 for group entries.

As a result of this settlement, at least 134 consumers will receive full refunds by Shoelace.

“We are pleased that Shoelace Events has finally agreed to give consumers the refunds they deserve,” Koster said.

Any consumer who was not refunded for this event, and has not been contacted by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, should file a complaint with the office at 800-392-8222 or at ago.mo.gov. Under the terms of the settlement, consumers have until August 1, 2016, to file complaints.

Economist: overtime pay rule could cause some Missouri businesses to close

Dr. Ernie Goss
Dr. Ernie Goss

(Missourinet) – A federal rule taking effect in December will have a negative impact on Missouri’s economy, according to Creighton University economist Ernie Goss. It will extend overtime pay to those making up to $47,000 and working more than 40 hours a week. Currently that cutoff is $24,000.

“That’s likely to have some unintended consequences and not all of those unintended consequences are going to be good,” says Goss. “I think Washington is regulating a lot of businesses out of business.”

Goss says the federal government must be careful with its approach when requiring significant labor changes.

“You’re likely to see a cut in benefits, for example. You’re likely to see hours worked cut back so that you’ll have two workers doing what was done previously,” said Goss. “So you could have more jobs added but each worker then will be making less. Of course, that’s not helpful for the overall economy in my judgement.”

Supporters, though, say the rule will help workers receive a fair wage and help them provide more for their families.

Public input sought on Nodaway County Lake

Maryville, Mo. (Press Release) – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to know what Missourians think about its nearly 1,000 conservation areas around the state. MDC is in the multi-year process of updating management plans for the Nodaway County Community Lake north of Maryville. Plans for the area will be available for public comment through June 30.

To preview draft management plans and share comments online, visit www.mdc.mo.gov/areaplans.

MDC provides fishing opportunities at the Nodaway County Community Lake, an area with 320 acres. In the middle of the area is a 73-acre lake with a boat ramp, a fishing jetty accessible for wheelchairs, and a restroom. Some food plots and native warm-season grasses are established in old fields surrounding the lake.

Statewide, MDC conservation areas cover almost one million public acres for the purpose of restoring and conserving forest, fish and wildlife resources, and for providing opportunities for all citizens to use, enjoy and learn about these resources. Most Missourians are within a 30-minute drive of an MDC conservation area.

Conservation Area Management Plans focus on natural resource management and public use on conservation areas. The plans do not address regulations on hunting, fishing and other area uses, which are set by the Conservation Commission and enforced under the Wildlife Code of Missouri. MDC will consider all ideas received and will work to balance the issues and interests identified with the responsibility of managing areas for the present and future benefits to forest, fish, wildlife, and people. Decisions on which ideas to incorporate into area plans and on how to best incorporate them will be based on the property’s purpose, its physical and biological conditions and capabilities, the best roles of the property in its local, regional and state-wide context, and on the professional expertise of MDC staff.

The two-day event will benefit both organizations and takes place on Saturday, June 4th and Monday, June 6th.

The second half of the two-part charity event starts on Monday, June 6th on the grounds of the St. Joseph Country Club (50 Ridgeland Road, St. Joseph, Mo). Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start to the golf tournament at 10 a.m. Play is set up for four-person scramble teams. Players will find something to win at every hole including five hole-in-one prizes. Cost for the golf event is $250/individual or $1,000/team.

“We really appreciate the support of Griffon Athletics toward ending violence toward women and children in the home,” says Jean Brown, YWCA St. Joseph Executive Director.

“Our shelter is the only resource of its kind in the area for women and children experiencing violence and trying to put their lives back together. We hope the community will join us at this event to raise support and awareness.”
